Chapter 2: Two Powers Fade!
Silence reigned over the small Island of Kame House.
Those gathered could only stare in shock at the stranger before them who smirked at Goku. They could hardly believe what he had just said, this was Goku's brother? That couldn't be true, if so where had this guy been all Goku's life?
Many thoughts rand through each of their heads, but only one seemed calm among them, only confused internally as he took in the situation.
Has it already been that long? Goten thought as he stared at Raditz. Had the Saiyan already encountered Piccolo? They had only arrived at the island roughly ten minutes ago, was that enough time to land on earth, encounter Piccolo, and then fly all the way out into the middle of the ocean to arrive here? The young half-Saiyan narrowed his eyes, no, Raditz wasn't that fast, none of them were at this point in time.
So how did he...
Goten's eyes slowly widened as he thought back to a few minutes ago, him powering up flashed through his mind.
"W-What? Brother?" Goku stuttered. "I don't have any brothers, the only person I ever had was my Grandpa and now my own family!"
"Did you hit your head or something?" The man questioned. "I'm Raditz, your older brother." The now named to the others Radtiz stated confidently, scowling at his younger brother. "Didn't your pod teach you anything? You should also at least remember Mother and Father, we Saiyans have extraordinary memory!"
"I'm sorry, but I don't know who you are, I think I'd remember having a brother." Goku frowned at the man who had been calling himself his brother. "If you want..."
Goten tuned out the conversation, trying to keep his calm. He didn't things would already start changing this much. From people who weren't supposed to be here at this time, being here, on top of Raditz potentially bypassing his confrontation with Piccolo. Just how much was going to change? He'd done his best to keep things on track, for what it was worth being trapped at Mount Paozu.
He frowned as he recalled something Raditz said.
"You're nearly as strong as I am!"
Though he could sense powers, he could not properly detect the levels of people with his limited experience, but hearing Raditz says that with his accurate scouter he knew things were way more off than he thought. Had their training actually made Goku that much stronger? He couldn't really remember the power level of Goku around this time, but he knew he wasn't strong enough to take Raditz on his own, not like he could potentially now.
Did this mean Goku wasn't going to die and go to King Kai's planet? That'd throw a massive wrench in my plans. He'd intended to get Goku to teach him the Kaio-ken after he'd gotten back and they had won, not to mention the power-up it gives would-be massively needed for the coming battles unless one of them managed to unlock Super Saiyan by some miracle.
Being so deep in thought, Goten didn't notice that Raditz and Goku had suddenly thrown punches at each other, only snapping back to reality when the minor shockwave hit him and the others, nearly knocking them over.
"Gah!"
"Goku!"
"That's enough out of you!"
Tien and Yamcha charged Raditz as Goku kept the other Saiyan locked in place, Krillin stayed back with Gohan to protect the kid, and Roshi even took a stance in front of Goten and Chi-Chi as Launch moved next to the two.
Raditz backed off, flying up into the air, and avoided the double team attack by the two human fighters. To his surprise the two recovered quickly and gave chase, flying up into the sky alongside Goku.
Well look at that, Kakarot and his friends can fly! Let's see... His interest peaked, and he activated his scouter, raising an eyebrow as he got a reading for their power levels. 850 and 770? Not bad for such a rubbish planet, and Kakarot is sitting at 1,200, not bad at all, but I'm still stronger!
"Watch out!" Goku shouted, unable to land a punch on Raditz as the Saiyan rushed past him with surprising speed. Tien and Yamcha were caught off guard by the suddenness and both attempted to block the incoming attack, only for time to slow as both their faces were grabbed and bodies violently jerked as they were slammed into the sandy ground of Kame house. The two let out gasps of pain as they were implanted deep into the ground with enough force to knock the wind out of them.
Such speed...! Tien thought as his whole body ignited in pain that far surpassed anything he felt before.
What kind of monster is this guy?! Yamcha could only manage to hold himself together as he struggled to stay conscious.
"Get off them!" Raditz looked up and smirked as he saw Goku rushing down at him, swinging a fist that the eldest brother dodged again, shifting his body to the right with his flight ability. Goku just managed to stop from hitting Tien and could only let out a pained cry as he raised his arm in time to block a kick from the other Saiyan, having spun around in his dodge to build up momentum for the attack.
"Honestly Kakarot, I expected more from you." Raditz scowled. "All this apparent potential and you've squandered it doing nothing but what, making friends and starting a Family?"
Goku didn't like the grin that grew on Raditz's face. He watched as energy crackled in the long-haired man's hand, soon enveloped in an aura that gave off a threatening feeling. "If you survive this, then maybe I'll consider forgiving you! Double Sunday!"
Without thinking, Goku moved to dodge as Raditz shot an intense beam of Ki at him. Had it hit him, he knew it would have severely injured if not killed him. The beam flew off into the distance, parting the water of the ocean before exploding in the distance.
It wasn't until he was in the air that he noticed his mistake.
"No!"
Time seemed too slow for Goten.
He had managed to keep up with the fight a bit, watching the very brief but incredibly fast tussle the others got involved in. So he had seen the sneak attack Raditz had prepared before anyone else did. While he had shot a beam of energy at Goku, his other hand had aimed right for Launch. Roshi had reacted too slowly, getting his arm scorched as he attempted to intercept the attack.
Chi-Chi had reached out for her son as he moved, throwing himself in front of Launch. The at-the-time blue-haired woman couldn't keep up with anything that was happening, finding herself falling to the ground as Goten's body slammed into hers, propelled by the energy attack he had jumped in front of.
She could only stare wide-eyed as she regained her senses, finding Goten sprawled on her lap, the back of his clothing burned off and his back heavily bloodied and burnt.
"Goten...!"
Goku could only watch in stunned silence as his wife raced over to their son alongside Gohan, both attempting to get a response from the boy who was deathly still. His hand twitched as a flashback of a dead Krillin from long ago raced into his mind.
It had happened again, someone he cherished and was close with had died again when he was so close by that he could have stopped it. Slowly his fists clenched as the two images of Krillin and now his Son raced through his mind, he could tell his son wasn't getting up, he could sense it.
"Hah! I expected more from your kids, Kakarot!" Raditz laughed, not looking at Goku as he admired his own handy-work below. "With a power level of 1,000, I thought he'd have survived that! I guess my scouter is broken, he was just a pathetic weakling like you. I think I'll kill the brat with a level of 900 next! Hah ha!"
Raditz laughed before his scouter flared to life, only doing that when there was a sudden surge in power nearby. What the? 2,000 no wait- now its 5,500? It's going higher! He quickly turned around, the device identifying Goku as the source. He could only stare in shock and terror as the power around his brother kept on rising, his scouter struggling to keep up. it's now 36,000?! What the hell is this!?
"Don't you dare talk about my sons you bastaa-aard!" Goku's eyes had turned pure with white-hot rage as his body was coated in a dark orange aura. Raditz never got the chance to dodge, block, or even twitch his fingers as Goku vanished from sight. The last time he saw his brother was right in front of him before his balled-up fist filled his vision. The crushing pain of his skull is caved in, the last thing he felt as his lifeless body was sent crashing into the ground, leaving a sizable crater in the tiny island. His scouter cracked and shattered from the intense force, letting out a dying beep as it sent the last bit of info it recorded deep into space.
Piccolo didn't know what to expect when he started flying toward the growing powers in the middle of the ocean. He had been meditating when he felt a sudden power rivaling, if not surpassing his, and Goku's power landed on Earth and made a be-line for his rival. Curious, he had begun flying towards it, his interest beyond peaked when he felt a sudden surge in power not coming from Goku, but another on the Island that surpassed all of them combined.
He started flying faster when he felt Goku's power skyrocket to heights he didn't think were possible before.
Soon enough, he was hovering above the island, staring on in shock as he felt the raw, raging power fluctuating off Goku as the Saiyan seemed to struggle to control his pure hate. Growling wildly as the power seemed to overwhelm him. Looking below the son of the former Demon King of Earth saw both Yamcha and Tien getting to their feet, along with the body of someone he didn't recognize. Further away, the other humans had gathered around a smaller body and that's when it dawned on Piccolo.
So one of his brats was killed, and it brought this out huh? Piccolo weighed his options, In his current state, Goku might just attack him blindly, and with his current boost in power Piccolo did not fancy his chances against the enraged man, so trying to talk down his rival might not end well for him.
But on the other hand, if this rage continues to consume Goku, he might just go on a blind rampage of the world, and Piccolo couldn't have that. Taking a leap Piccolo moved closer and called out to Goku.
"Calm down, or you'll end up hurting your family with your power." He stated bluntly. This got a twitch out of Goku, making the man jerk a little back to his senses.
"F-Family?"
"That's right, now stop your tantrum before you do something you'll regret," Piccolo gestured to the ground below, pointing to Raditz, "You already took care of the threat."
Slowly Goku's hair fell into its natural spiky state and the orange aura dissipated. His eyes came back as his vision cleared from the pure rage he felt. In a flash Goku's power dropped drastically, leaving him gasping from the sudden strain placed on his body from having such a sudden increase of power leave him so swiftly. Clutching his chest the lone Saiyan of Earth looked over to Piccolo, surprised to see him.
"P-Piccolo? What are you doing here?"
"I came here because of all the power that was being thrown around, you thought I wouldn't notice?" The green demon crossed his arms, face settling back into its usual stony expression. "What happened here? And what was that wild power you just used? It was unlike anything I've felt you use before."
Goku scrunched his face up in thought before looking back to where his still motionless son lay, clutched in the arms of Chi-Chi who seemed to be in a state of shock, while Gohan cried over the body of his brother.
"Well..."
"So that's what happened."
Piccolo could only ponder the developments he had just finished hearing from Goku and his friends.
As he was caught up in the situation, Yamcha and Tien had recovered, the latter flying away with Raditz's body to bury him somewhere on the mainland. Though wary of their former enemy, after what they had gone through and what had happened, they had little fear of the supposed demon man.
Chi-Chi was being comforted by Launch as Tien left with Bulma, the woman quickly leaving with the martial artist to find all the Dragon Balls to wish Goten back to life. Gohan continued to cling to his brother's body, refusing to let it go as Krillin tried his best to help the young boy through his grief.
Roshi stood next to Goku, his arm bandaged up. "This is quite worrying, as much as I hate to admit it Goku." He looked at his student, able to clearly see the conflict in his eyes. "If what he said was true, then there are more than likely others like him out there in the universe. I wish we could have gotten more information out of him, but that can't be helped."
"We'll need to get stronger as well." He continued, casting a glance towards Goten's body. "If you were barely on his level, then that does not bode well for our future."
"I'm going to get stronger, so nothing like this ever happens again." Goku stared at his clenched fist. "I made a mistake and it cost my son his life, that's not going to happen again."
"That's the spirit," Roshi nodded as he saw that familiar fire in his student's eye. "We can start by trying to figure out that strange power you unleashed earlier."
Piccolo narrowed his eyes. ready to say something before his and the attentions of the other's eyes were drawn away to Gohan who let out a startled shout.
In Gohan's arms, Goten began to fade away, with him (Gohan) attempting to grasp at the vanishing body before it disappeared completely.
"Goten!" Chi-Chi cried out as she rushed over.
"It is alright, your son's body is safe."
Goku perked up as he heard a voice in his head, as did everyone else on the island. "Kami?"
"Get out of my head old man," Piccolo grunted.
Kami ignored his other half as he spoke. "It is alright Goku and Chi-Chi, I'm currently in the afterlife with your son. I took his body so he could have a physical form here, otherwise, he'd be a mere spirit unable to do anything."
"Oh thank goodness, my baby is safe." Chi-Chi left her shoulders relaxed as she clutched at her chest, her eyes red from having cried over her son's death. Though it hurt deeply that her baby had been killed, she rested easy knowing her child was with the god of their planet, and they could bring him back to life with the Dragon Balls.
"Not that I'm ungrateful or anything, but why'd you do that Kami?" Goku questioned as he scratched the back of his head. "We're going to wish him back with the Dragon Balls in a little so he wouldn't have been there long."
"That is why I have contacted you, I'd like you to hold off on reviving your son."
"You want us to WHAT?!"
That wasn't the best timing Kami. Krillin couldn't help but think as Chi-Chi instantly exploded in anger, so great was it that even the god of Earth shivered from his place in the afterlife.
"What's the reason behind this, if I may ask." Roshi's sunglasses shimmered as he stared up into the sky, questioning the deity.
"To keep things brief, right now Earth is in more danger than we could have ever imagined." The elderly being said. "I had been monitoring the situation since Raditz arrived, and talking with a friend I have here in the Afterlife, right now two more Saiyans far more powerful than Raditz are racing towards Earth in a frenzy. They are estimated to arrive within a year or so at their current pace."
"Wait, you're joking right?" Yamcha couldn't help but stammer out. He could still feel the pain in his body from Raditz's assault on him and Tien. "You mean people stronger than that jerk are coming here, in a year?!"
"Indeed, and none of you are ready to take them on unless Goku manages to access one of those two powers we've witnessed today." Kami continued. "Even then it might not be enough, so with that said, I'd like to take young Goten and have him trained by my friend who is immensely powerful, and could help him control his power and prepare him for the fights to come, while you all prepare yourselves."
"You don't really expect my boys to fight do you?" Chi-Chi growled out, tears welling up at the corners of her eyes. "I just had to witness my son die right in front of me! Like hell, I'm letting them onto a battlefield! I'd sooner start training again than let that happen!"
"I'd rather this not have to happen at all Ms. Son." Kam's tone was low but firm. "But currently, Goku, Piccolo, and Gohan are the strongest beings on Earth, and while the others are not too far behind, I as the Guardian of Earth, am not risking the entire planet's safety if we can train up those that could defend it. If you don't want them to fight, then become strong enough to fight for them. Besides, your son has already agreed."
Chi-Chi was about to muster up another response when she felt something tug on her pants. Looking down she saw her little Gohan clinging to her leg, looking up at her with tears still in his eyes.
"Mom, please don't fight with Mr. Kami." He said, sniffling. "I-I don't want this to happen again, I still want to be a scholar, b-but if evil people k-kill us all, there's no point."
"Gohan..." Chi-Chi wasn't stunned by her child's maturity. Both her children were well above their mental age group and capable of keeping level heads. She was more saddened that her son had to say this at all, and as much as she hated it, she knew he was right.
What was the point in studying when there were people on their way to try and kill them?
"... fine, we'll train, but we'll still make time to study, okay? We can't become bone-headed like your father." She reached down and rubbed the top of Gohan's head, making the boy giggle as she wiped a tear from his eye. Goku could only chuckle with his arms behind his head, not the least bit insulted by his wife's comment. "Kami, is Goten there for us to talk to?"
Kami couldn't help but sweat a bit.
"About that..."
"Man, these things really are tasty!"
Goten sat on Snake Way, having taken a break from his run along the long road. The second he had been taken to the afterlife and regained his body, he bolted. Running towards the start of Snake Way before King Yenma could even give his approval to let Goten go to King Kai's place.
Kami and Yenma were too busy arguing with each other to notice the little one dash off without a word.
Not like he could have stopped me anyway. Goten thought as he munched on a cloud he snagged. His power level was barely above Raditz, using my Ape Boost? Anger Charge? Ehh I'll come up with a better name later! He'd have not been able to stop me.
Goten laid back on the road, sprawled out as he stared into the pure nothingness above him. He let out a soft sigh before his whole body tensed up, and his ki flared to life around him as he let out an angered shout.
"I got careless!"
The recent events played through his mind like a repeating record. From Raditz's arrival to his death at his uncle's hands. How had everything gone so wrong? How had this happened?
Did I powering up really change things that much? Butterfly effects suck! Or is it affects? Goten blew some of his long hair, watching it sway as he contemplated the changes. I'd tried so hard to make sure things wouldn't change much, while also getting stronger... maybe that was a mistake, maybe this version of this universe isn't like the one I know.
He should have figured something was up the moment he saw Yamcha, Tien, and the others at Kame's house who weren't supposed to be there. No, I should have taken the hint the moment I was born.
Pushing himself up and dusting off his knees, the young half-Saiyan sighed. As much as it irked him, he had no issue letting it all go.
There was no point fretting over what he couldn't control, what didn't go as expected. He'd focus on what he could control; himself.
"Right then, I best be off!" Stretching his legs and arms, the boy soon took off on his journey again, racing along Snake Way towards his future mentor, determined to get stronger than he was now.
Elsewhere in the Galaxy, four sets of space pods raced towards Earth, each with their own goals in mind, but both ready to terrorize the planet.
On earth, a lone insectoid robot landed on a mound of dirt freshly made. It scurried about, making noises and flashing unnoticeable lights as in the distance, Yamcha flew away, not noticing the machine begin digging into the dirt he used as Raditz's tomb.
