Prompt #18: Spirit - Sometimes it took all he had to not knock that scythe's head off.
Words: 768
"That little turd."
Dr. Franken Stein glanced over to see exactly Spirit was spazzing out about this time. All he saw was Maka and Soul sitting on a park bench, heads bent over a book spread across their laps. All their hands were visible, there was no footsie or inappropriate behavior going on, not even a glance spared between them. In fact, it looked just like two friends reading over the same page of notes right before they go take a test.
Which, given who these two friends are, was probably an accurate guess.
Spirit, however, had an overdeveloped sense of idiocy and a jealous streak that rivaled most men. "How dare he sit so close to my darling angel! He's contaminating her with his disgusting germs!"
"They're probably studying for the test Marie is giving later today," Stein stated.
"Then why doesn't that little worm use his own notes?!"
Already bored, Stein returned to his anatomy book. "Soul doesn't take notes, and even if he did, he doesn't take very good ones. Maka has to share hers if they are to keep their combined grade up."
An indignant sputter broke free of Spirit's lips. "So he's just using my beloved Maka for her brain!"
"Better than for her body." Stein knew it was a bad thing to say in an already irritating situation, but he'd just come off a long shift in the clinic and didn't feel like tiptoeing around the issue. Sure enough, Spirit's face turned a mottled purple color in record time.
"That little pervert. How dare he harbor such impure thoughts! I'll chop off his hands and knock his head off if he should even touch my Maka!"
The sharp, aggravated sigh from Stein should have been his last warning. So should have been the quick tap-tap-tap of his fingernail against the tabletop, a tic that showed Stein's patience was running out. But blinded by his fatherly temper, Spirit only jumped to his feet and screamed, "MAAAAAAAAH-KAAAAAAAAAH! DADDY IS HEEEEEEEEEEERE FOR YOUUUUUUUU!"
Stein rolled his eyes again and facepalmed. "Does he ever listen to anything I say?" He turned his head to peer through his fingers and watch the debacle across the park. Just because I find his stupidity annoying doesn't mean I can't enjoy the show, he justified to himself.
From that distance, Stein could only imagine what their raised voices were saying as Spirit gestured wildly with both arms at Maka and Soul. The white-haired boy's frame went stiller and stiller as Maka argued with her father, her face beet-red with anger and embarrassment. The red-haired detective continued to rant and rave at Soul while spouting his love to Maka.
Finally Stein, taking pity on Maka and already bored out of his skull, gathered up his books and strode over to the bench. Soul saw him approach and let his eyes flick to Spirit, one eyebrow arching as if to say, "I can't knock this asshole's head off, could you please do the honors?" With a sigh the doctor reached over and grabbed Spirit's tie. "I'm sorry that this mad idiot is bothering you," he apologized with a patiently tolerant smile to Maka. "Allow me to escort him away."
"Th-Thank you, Doctor Stein," Maka said, her voice polite despite the fact that her cheeks were still flushed.
With a hand around his senpai's tie and another grasping his jacket and shirt collars, Stein forcibly hauled Spirit away from the young couple. A glance back provided the sight of Soul draping an arm around Maka's trembling shoulders, his lips moving to whisper soft words that Stein didn't bother to decipher. When Maka's lips curved into a smile brimming with warmth at whatever her scythe had said, Stein shook his head and turned away.
Careful, Maka. You're falling in love with your weapon partner and don't even realize it, he thought wryly. Didn't you learn anything from your mother?
Then he heard Soul's arrogant voice challenging, "HEY, OLD MAN! MAKE A SCENE LIKE THAT AGAIN AND I'LL LOP OFF THAT PART OF YOU THAT GETS THE GIRLS ALL FLUTTERY!"
Spirit revived enough to whirl around and screech, "YOUR ASS IS MINE, OCTOPUS-HEAD!"
"I DON'T SWING THAT WAY, PERVERT!"
Stein chuckled as his senpai's face blanched in disgust. Okay, I take it back Maka. Your scythe is so much better than your mother's ever will be.
Yeah, very little actual SoMa, but Stein is a bamf and he needed some ink, so XP.
