(Hiccup P.O.V)
Monday – nine till ten thirty I have Charms, then break, then at ten forty five till twelve fifteen I've got Defence Against the Dark Arts then lunch, which is until one o'clock, followed by Potions which is until two thirty and break number two. Then last class is Transfiguration and that's two forty five till four forty five and that's it. Dinner is at five forty five.
I munched on another slice of toast as I read over my timetable again. It's going to take me forever to memorise all of this. I folded up the timetable and stuck it back in one of my robes pockets and carried on eating my toast.
This dining hall is huge. It seemed so much smaller with everybody piled into it. At least it's quieter. It was far too loud and stuffy yesterday. I came down for breakfast early and sat down at the end of the Ravenclaw table nearest the door. There was near to no one in the dining hall. A couple of Gryffindor students were sitting near the top of their table and several Hufflepuffs were at their table eating and chatting. I guess the Hufflepuff house is the house full of early risers. Maybe I should have been in Hufflepuff. There is only one other Ravenclaw at the table, a platinum blonde, pale girl who looked a couple of years older than us first years. She sat neatly at the other end of the table with her hair tied up in a neat pleated bun. As more students piled in she got up from her seat, grabbed her bag and headed for the door. As I watched her leave Rapunzel came giggling from around the corner with another girl dressed in the same uniform. As she caught my eye her face lit up and she came running over dragging the poor girl behind her.
"Good morning Hiccup! You're early! This is Anna!" She smiled sitting down next to me. Anna smiled and gave a wave and sat down in front of me on the Hufflepuff table.
This is weird.
"Morning" I replied a little confused.
"Oh! I don't suppose you guys got your timetables did you?" Rapunzel asked pulling out her timetable from her pocket.
"Uh yeah, I've got charms first." Before I could say another word Rapunzel squealed, startling both me and Anna and her face lit up.
"We're in the same class for charms! You'll be with me and Anna! This is great!" She chimed leaving me and Anna looking at each other awkwardly. This is really weird. I'm not exactly number one on the "who shall we sit beside?" list let alone having the "hurray you're in my class!" reaction but apparently there is a first for everything in this school.
"I wonder what we'll be learning! What do we even do in charms? What are charms? Hiccup you're smart you'll help we with classes until I get the hang of them? I still don't know much about Hogwarts." Rapunzel asked all hyped up with excitement. Was that a compliment? That was a compliment! She actually thinks I'm smart?!
"I uh I can do my best?" I replied a little flushed. I'm sure that was supposed to be an answer but I think it was more of a question.
Rapunzel cheered "Oh this is going it be great!" by the end of her sentence it turn into more of a squeak than a cheer.
"Sooooooooooooo how did you guys know each other?" Anna piped up after another awkward laugh.
"On the train ride here" Rapunzel replied before I had a chance to say anything. "We shared a stall along with two others. I'll introduce you to them when they come down for breakfast." She smiled.
"What about yourself Anna? Who did you come here with?" I asked. She looked at me and then her eyes changed. They looked sad.
"Um, with my sister, she is three years older than me and in the same house as you Hiccup. Maybe you've seen her. Her name is Elsa. Once we got here she showed me where to go and what to do and then she wondered off." She replied. Rapunzel and I both kind of sat there silently unsure of how to reply. When Anna realised this she instantly spoke up. "Oh don't worry! She does that!" She laughed awkwardly. "She has a people thing. Doesn't exactly like crowds and is a bit of a loner. Haha! Wait. No! Loner is the wrong word. Just anxious around people! Yeah that's it..." She rambled eventually trailing her sentence off.
I can see why her sister is a Ravenclaw. It seems like they just threw the loners into that house. As well as put all the optimistic early risers into Hufflepuff. Each house does have a theme. The students must have similarities in characteristics in each house. Which probably makes making friends in the Ravenclaw house that much more difficult. If it wasn't already as difficult as it was. Saying that, it was easy enough making friends with Jack, Rapunzel and Merida although technically that was all there doing. I didn't do anything.
I looked back at the doors to the great hall and say Merida wonder through them chatting happily to a blonde Gryffindor.
Astrid.
Oh no! She isn't friends with Astrid is she!? Great just great! I'm doomed. This can only go horribly wrong from here.
(Merida P.O.V)
"I didnae realise ye could lob that thing so far! It's bloody heavy!" I awed as we walked down the corridor towards the great hall. We got up early and snuck outside with our smuggled equipment and we showed off our talents as well as laugh and mock each other when we tried out each other's equipment. Admittedly it was easier to sneak out than it was to sneak back in. The amount of students wondering around the halls as it approached breakfast had increased dramatically and we had to dip and dodge just to get back to our dorm to hide them again.
"It's really not that heavy, it just takes some getting used. Besides if you just a newbie it really wares on your muscles. Archery isn't exactly a piece of cake either! My arm is really sore and swollen." Astrid said gently rubbing her arm. The thing with archery, especially if you are a girl, if you aren't careful the string will whack off your arm when you fire. It can be pretty painful and Astrid successfully managed to that on numerous occasions leaving a big red mark on her arm.
"Ye'r gonnae need to put some ice on that or it's gonna be pretty painful in the morn." I replied as we walked into the great hall. I spotted Hiccup and Rapunzel sitting together at the end of the Ravenclaw table facing a strawberry blonde girl. Hiccup was eating toast when he turned and saw us, at which point he began choking on it. Rapunzel quickly went to his aid with a glass of water.
"Ah there's Hiccup and Rapunzel, ye coming over too?" I asked looking at Astrid. She had stopped and looked at Hiccup with a frown and then turned back to me.
"I... it's alright. I'll meet you at the table. Are you friends with them?" She asked confused as she turned to walk to the Gryffindor table.
"Huh? Aye! I guess I am!" I laughed. I made a promise to Rapunzel that I would stay her friend no matter what. I suppose if I'm friends with her that means I'm friends with Hiccup and Jackass; however he doesn't seem to be around.
"Why?" She asked.
"Why no, they havenae done anything to prove that they shouldnae be ma friends." I replied. This whole questioning my friend's thing was a little odd but I dismissed it. It was nothing to worry about. With that she nodded and headed over to the Gryffindor table as I wondered over to Rapunzel and Hiccup picking up an apple as I went.
"Ye lot look pretty settled in!" I commented biting into my apple.
"Good morning!" She chimed her face glowing.
"Morning Merida" Hiccup followed. "This is Anna, Rapunzels classmate." He pointed to the girl sitting in front them. She had a white streak down one of her pigtails and big teal coloured eyes. She was about to say something back when she was interrupted by a growl coming from her stomach.
"I'm in some need of some pancakes" She laughed awkwardly before turning round on the table to and grabbing a plate.
"Oh I should get some breakfast too while I'm at it. I could teach you how to make pancakes! They aren't hard. Oh! Try this for a topping!" Rapunzel chirped as she joined Anna at picking breakfast. She continually picked up different bits of fruit and allspices and added them to not only her plate but Anna's too. It looks like she knows her way around a good meal. I wonder if I can get her to cook for me sometime. I was happy with my apple for now and I took another bite from it.
"You've not got charms first do you?" Hiccup asked drinking his toast down with some orange juice.
"Hmm, oh no I've got History of Magic first." I answered.
Hiccup nodded. "I figured. It was unlikely that'd you'd also be in our class. They probably split the houses so it's two houses in a class which means you're in History of Magic with Slytherin. Could mean you're with Jack." He tried to hide his slight smirk by drinking his orange juice. Nice try, scrawny.
I grumbled. The thought of being in a class with him makes me want to smash my face off the table. There is always a chance I won't be. Arg if I am in a class with him he will do all he possibly can to drive me mad and history isn't exactly exciting. Och damn it!
"Don't get yourself all riled up, it's fifty-fifty, you might not be in the same class as him." Hiccup added trying to reassure me. He put the orange juice back on the table and pulled out his timetable again and began scanning it again.
"I certainly hope yer right." I huffed as I leaned against the Ravenclaw table and finished off eating the rest of my apple.
We nearly had peace for ten minutes. As more students piled in and filled up their house tables us four remained gathered at the ends of the Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff tables. We sat and ate the different foods that were displayed finely on the two tables and discussed the Hogwarts classes, or explained them to Rapunzel who had little to no idea about magic or Hogwarts. I wonder if her parents were Muggles, how else would she have so little knowledge of magic or Hogwarts. It was not long during this educational conversation that Jack eventually showed up.
"Arg I'm so tired..." Jack yawned as he groggily approached the Ravenclaw table. "How do you guys do it?" He complained.
"We're just early risers. Don't worry you'll get used to it." Hiccup reassured him as he stuffed his timetable back in his pocket.
"Jack!" A voice called over from the Slytherin table. It was a tall medium build man, definitely a senior, with dark chocolate coloured hair and goatee. "Breakfast is coming and going!" He called again flagging Jack over.
"Alright" Jack shouted back waving a hand in acknowledgment. The senior just shrugged and sat down at the table, greeting a few classmates as he did. "I suppose this is a quick good morning and I'll either see you guys at break or lunch or class or at some point during the day." He grinned tiredly at us and began to head towards the Slytherin table where he joined the senior that previously called for him. He just got here and he has already befriended a senior!? How has he managed to get friends in high places!? That boy confuses me.
"Oh! I never got to say good morning to Jack. Do you know what class he's in first?" Rapunzel sighed as she appeared holding a plate full of golden coloured scrambled eggs.
"Nope" I replied slightly annoyed.

Looks like this is it, class 72, the History of Magic classroom and I'm not late. I had to been running around the first floor trying to find this room. I was lucky enough to bump into an older student from the Hufflepuff house, a tall broad shouldered guy with mousy blonde hair, who pointed me in the right direction. Trust the Hufflepuffs to help me out. If they are anything like Rapunzel they probably go around asking everyone if they are okay.
Flynn was supposed to show me but quickly had to dash. He did warn me that this class could not get anymore dull and the temptation to smash ones head off a wall repeatedly was pretty overwhelming. I'll keep those pointers in mind. This class is going to suck.
I followed the rest of the stragglers into the class and looked about for a seat. The room was filled was literally empty, minus the millions of history books a globe and a black board. The desks were all singular desks which means it's going to be harder to talk to anyone. At the front next to the black board was a short man with golden spiky hair and golden skin. He was standing on a stool and scribbling words on the board.
The room was filled with green and red cloaks. I didn't realise the classes were split between two houses and looks like I'm with the Gryffindor house. That means! Alright where is she? She has to be here. It wasn't hard to spot her. Second row from the back very end of the row was the wild puff of red curly hair and luckily an empty desk next to her. I shuffled past everyone and slide into the chair next to her.
"Well surprise meeting you here!" I smirked. She flinched and turned her head sharply to look at me.
"Och bloody hell" She groaned sticking her head in her hands. "I wis hopin ye wouldnae be in the same class!" She growled.
"Oh come on, I'm charming!" I whined. She glared at me and flicked her head back to her books. I laughed. Poor Merida, she'll learn to love it. Or I'll end up dead in a ditch. I am messing with a Scot with a red headed temper. She might just drop me.
I was about to add another remark when there was a clunk from the front of the room. The teacher had stopped scribbling on the board and jumped off the stool he was using to stand on and placed it back beside the black board before returning to his desk and sitting down. He definitely wasn't a human or at least not entirely, probably part goblin. Written on the board in neat writing with small doodles around the edges, this is a teacher right not a student in disguise, was several instructions.
All students must answer a pop quiz at the end of the lesson. The questions are listed below. In total there are 10 questions. There must be no referring to other classmates or any of your textbooks. Once completed, check over twice and then please hand to me at the font. This is just so I can get a rough idea on who actually pays attention in this class.
Thanks
Professor Sand
P.s These surprise quizzes will be turning up throughout your school year. You will not be given notice of when and what subject they will be on. You have been warned!
Without realising Merida and I both moaned in annoyance of this surprise quiz. However our annoyed outbursts varied as she flopped her head onto her desk while I flung my arms up in disgust. I pulled out my jotter from my bag and opened it to the first blank page with a sigh.
"This is going to suck!" I cried out.
"Yer tellin me" Merida commented her chin resting on the desk.
It was an ongoing struggle for both Merida and I to keep awake in that class. If I did start to dose off Merida would quickly punch me hard on the arm or stab me with her sharpened pencil when the teacher wasn't looking. I figured she would let me sleep just to get me into trouble but she was probably having the time of her life inflicting some sort of pain on me whenever she felt like it. In return whenever she began to nod off I would slyly rip a page out of my jotter, scrunch it up and with an elastic band that I had found at the bottom of my bag, along with a paperclip and a couple of mints and fruity chews, would ping it at her head. By the end of it I started doodling in them waiting for her to dose off again. Occasionally she would open them up and either laugh of scorn at the amazing art work in them before shoving them in her pocket.
When the time came for the quiz I actually did okay, despite actually falling asleep in class twice. I managed to answer most of the questions and the ones I had no idea on I bluffed my way through. I handed it in at the front and then was excused from the room. The test had run over into first break by a couple of minutes and Merida was still sitting in their pondering over the questions. She couldn't be that far behind and so I waited outside the class. I wasn't too sure what people did in break. I suppose it is just a free period where students can do what they wanted. I leaned against the wall in front of the classroom door and watched as a couple of students came and went before Merida eventually emerged from the class rubbing forehead. She looked up and saw me waiting leaning against the wall and sighed.
"How'd you find it?" I asked pushing myself off the wall and walked towards her.
"I don't know. Aright I guess." She shrugged.
"Yeah it wasn't bad. It was so boring though. I probably would have known more if I wasn't focusing on trying not to fall asleep. Thanks for keeping me awake by the way!" I laughed.
"Aye, I know. Och it was fun. Ye deserved it!" She smiled.
"I deserved it!? I told you I'm charming!" I replied shocked.
"Aye right, yer annoying and yer short!" We both laughed. It was true though out of the four of us I was the shortest. She is probably is going to tease me relentlessly about that. It went quiet for a moment before Merida piped up.
"Thanks fer waiting, that wis unexpected." There was a faint smile as she awkwardly looked away. It's funny how she can't look at me when I do something nice for her. I'm not all horrible I can be nice even for funny speaking aggressive curly red heads.
She began walking down the corridor slightly frustrated with herself for having to thank me. "Ye comin along or what!" She shouted back.
"Now was thanking me really that hard?" I teased running to catch her up.
"Wheesht!" She growled back and we continued to walk down the corridor together.
