New Hope Rewritten

Chapter VIII: Dolphin Boards

Kairi

When we arrive, the boys were oddly protective. I know I'm a beginner at this whole survival thing but I don't think there's a need for them to act like they're my bodyguards. I wonder what Chiron told them... maybe that's why they're like this.

We sit at a bench and talk about the quest. "I hope we all make it out of this alive." I say.

Nico shifts uncomfortably, "Yeah... of course we will."

"HEY!" a voice shouts. The three of us look to see three teens walking towards us; two girls and a boy. One girl had brown hair and was wearing the same purple shirt as the blonde boy. The other girl had black short hair and was wearing silver clothes and was equipped with a bow. When they got closer, only then did I notice the boy and the silver girl had the same striking blue eyes.

"Hey guys." Blonde says. Percy smiles while fist bumping him.

The brown haired girl says nothing and just walks up to Nico and engulfs him in a hug. "Hazel..." Nico says softly and hugs her back.

I look at the silver girl and give a small smile, "H-hi." I say.

"Who are you?" she demands. Oh damn...

"Kairi Wright." I say immediately and sit up straight.

Percy slaps my shoulder, "She's my lil' sis." I rub my sore shoulder as he says that. "This is Jason, Thalia, and Hazel." Pointing respectively to blonde, silver girl, and the girl who bear-hugged Nico.

"Hey." Hazel says with a friendly wave and a smile to match.

"Hey Kai," Percy starts, "Could you give us some time to talk?"

I sigh, "Fine. Be quick—I'm getting tired of all this secret stuff." I walk away from the group and sat under a tree with no intention to listen in to their conversation since I probably have no right. Or maybe they're talking about battle strategies or something like that since I'm practically useless. I look down at the pendant I always wore and gave a silent prayer to my dad, Poseidon.

"Hestia said you gave me a weapon already... is that true? I'm going on a mission dad and I'll need all the help I can get so I won't be useless to the group."

As if the god himself was waiting for me to pray to him, he immediately replies, "Yes, it is true. And you aren't useless; you are the most important member of the team. Your pendant is a sword. Just think of it turning into a sword and it will. It can also change into a trident if you wish so you have better control of the water."

"Thank you."

I look back at the gang and notice they were coming towards me. Standing up, I walk towards them as well. They observed me as if they were expecting me to do something. "What?" I ask, the ADHD part of me getting the best of myself.

"Nothing." They say in unison then looked at each other accusingly.

"It's obvious that you guys are hiding something." I say while crossing my arms, "And you know what? Fine. Don't tell me. I don't care anyway." I say nonchalantly. I really do want to know though... "So where should we go?" I ask.

"What's the deepest part of the Earth that we could go?" Hazel asks.

We're left in silence until I spoke, "Mariana's Trench is pretty deep."

"Could they be there?" Thalia asks.

"It's worth a shot." Nico says.

"The problem is getting there." Jason says.

"Air is a big no no." I say while the rest of us agree except for Jason.

"I don't think I can shadow travel just yet." Nico says.

"Even with my help?" Hazel asks. Nico just smiles at her sympathetically,

"It's underwater after all." He explains.

"Guess that just leaves water." Percy says with a smug look. "Our dad isn't as uptight as Zeus in terms of territory." He says while leaning on my shoulder. We all hold hands and disappear in a big splash of water.

Important note to self: Make sure landings are accurate. We all landed by a port on a deck. However, two were rather unlucky—the two being Percy and Thalia. Percy came out of the water dry while Thalia was dripping wet and clearly annoyed. I willed Thalia dry as an apology.

"The water isn't rather calm." Nico points out. We all look out of the bay and notice the harsh waves along with the dark clouds.

"Poseidon and Zeus are probably salty to each other." I say.

"Could you two calm the water?" Hazel asks Percy and I.

We both look at each other and shrug, "We could try," he says.

With hands clutched, we both stood on water without sinking. I thought of my pendant transforming into a trident and it worked. There was a strange pull on my stomach as I thought of the bay waters' being serene. Unintentionally, I began to sing. The trident within my grasp seemed to react to my singing as I sang in Greek. It was radiating power and Percy amplified it even more, willing the waters to be calm after a few minutes. Then, voices started to speak in my head,

"That was beautiful! Lady Kairi, sing again!"

"You should sing here more often!"

"Lady Kairi you were amazing!"

Then, Percy's voice echoed through the passing currents, "Those are the fishes."

"Thanks Captain Obvious." I reply.

Percy and I went back onto the dock. Everyone was looking at us shocked. I got scared and hid behind Percy by instinct who just laughed at me, "The m-mortals! Wh-what did they see?"

"Relax," he says, "the mist would cover up for us. Besides, Hazel's pretty good with controlling it."

"That was... pretty cool." Jason says.

"Wicked trident." Thalia says. Only then did Percy notice the weapon in my hand,

"Why do you get a trident?" he asks.

I shrug in response, "Beats me." I will it to turn back into its pendant form, "Now, let's go surfing."

Maybe surfing on dolphins isn't a bad idea. I mean we all got along well with our surfboards since they were dolphins. We all tried our hand in doing tricks and it was fun. It was like we weren't on a death mission. Eventually, we were above Mariana's Trench and we're left clueless.

"What now?" Hazel asks.

"Do we go underwater?" Nico asks, clutching onto his dolphin for dear life.

"I guess." I say. "Let's go!" I go under water with Percy following until we both realized nobody else followed us.

"They do realize that we would help them breathe underwater, right?" Percy asks me through the currents.

I shrug and break through the surface to see the four of them staring at me, "Are you guys gonna go underwater or what?"

"We don't have gills unlike you and Kelp Head." Thalia says.

I roll my eyes, "Yeah right—did you all think we would let you drown? Go underwater and we'll give you air bubbles." The others looked at each other like oh yeah and hesitantly go underwater. As soon as they do, Percy gives all four of them air bubbles to be able to breathe. We both used the currents to push all six of us deeper into the trench, all of us secretly wondering if we would all get out of this alive.
