Chapter 10
"Haku!" Katara fell to her knees and held out her arms as he son ran into them.
"Mommy!" Haku ran awkwardly up to her and hugged her tightly.
Because of them impending war that was going to happen soon, they all decided the best thing was to have their family with them.
"Hey buddy!" Zuko walked up behind them. He was practically beaming when he saw Haku.
"Daddy!" Haku let go of Katara and ran up to Zuko who lifted him off the ground and into his arms capturing him in a hug.
"Mommy and I have missed you so much", Zuko smiled at him," Did you have fun with Aunt Suki?"
"Yeah, but I have more fun with you", Haku pointed his finger to Zuko's nose.
"Again!" Zuko barked at Aang and Aang rolled his eyes.
"Zuko, we've been at this for hours!" Aang whined and rolled his eyes.
"I said again!" Zuko yelled at him.
Aang sighed and did the moves that would allow him to shoot fire from his closed fist. Unfortunately when the moment came for the fire to come shooting out, all that came out was a little puff of smoke.
"Again!" Zuko ordered.
Aang's face turned red and he shouted back," No! I don't want to do this anymore! I'm tired!"
"The FireLord doesn't care that you are tired Aang! You have to keep trying!" Zuko scolded him.
"Zuko, I'm not going to be able to firebend anyways!" Aang yelled back," There is no way I will be able to learn everything I need to learn by the battle day!"
"You must try!" Zuko shot fire at him.
"Mommy, I miss you so much!" Haku smiled at Katara.
"I missed you too baby", she smiled at him.
"Why did you and daddy go away?" Haku inquired.
"Because there is a lot going on right now Haku", Katara frowned slightly.
"Like what?" he asked innocently.
"Come here", Katara gestured to a bench that was to the side of them as they walked through the palace's gardens.
They sat down and Katara held onto Haku's hands tightly," Haku, this might be kind of hard to understand, but a war is about to happen."
"A war?" Haku frowned," What kind of war mommy?"
"A war between the nations", she told him," We are fighting the fire nation."
"The firebenders?" Haku stood up," Mommy, I'm a firebender! Don't fight me!"
"No, come here baby!" Katara couldn't help but laugh a little," We aren't fighting firebenders like you Haku."
"Then who?"
"The FireLord", Katara told him," He wants to hurt people like us and we have to stop him."
"Why does he want to hurt us mommy?" Haku's eyes brimmed with tears," I don't want someone hurting us."
"Haku..." Katara pulled him into her lap and hugged him tightly," No one is ever going to hurt us Haku. Daddy and I are going to protect you no matter what. Nothing is ever going to happen to us because we love you."
"I love you too!" Haku hugged her tightly.
Azula was looking out the library window with pure hatred oozing out of every pore of her. She hated being here. She hated her life. She hated doing what these people made her do. She hated her father. She hated her nation. She hated this nation. She hated being here. Everything in her life she hated. Despised everything. She inhaled deeply and exhaled through her nose producing a cloud of smoke.
"Wow!" she heard a little voice yell. She leaned forward and looked behind her. She was presented with a miniature... Zuko?
"Zuko?" she asked with confusion and tilted her head.
"That daddy's name", the boy laughed.
"Daddy's name...? Oh!" she yelled when it finally clicked. This was her brother's son!
"Your Haku", she pointed at him.
"Yeah", he walked over to her and Azula couldn't help but smirk at how little he was. She didn't realize he was this young! To be honest, she kind of forgot he even existed.
"Who are you?" he stopped in front of her and leaned against the windowsill.
"I'm..." she was about to say, but she didn't know what his parents might have told them. Who cares... It's not like you even matter she scolded herself," I'm your Aunt Azula."
"Oh! I've heard about you", he told her.
"I'm sure all good things", she muttered and leaned back.
"Sometimes..." he shrugged," Mostly sad things. Whenever mommy would talk about you, she gets real sad."
"Why?" Azula scoffed.
"I don't remember", he shook his head.
"Figures", she huffed," So why are you in here? Where are your parents?"
"Not sure", he walked over to her and leaned on the arm of her chair," So if you're my aunt, what am I?"
"You would be my nephew", she rolled her eyes.
"Oh", he nodded," Is that a good thing?"
"Define good", she sneered.
"A happy thing that happens to you or something you like!" he smiled at her.
"I didn't mean literally define it", she laughed dryly.
"I don't know what literably means", he frowned.
"Literally means in a literal sense", she told him.
"I don't know what liberal means", he told her.
"It's literal with a t", she corrected him," and it means... I don't know... It means exact."
"I'm not sure I get it, but okay", he accepted her answer," I'll get it more when I'm older."
Azula nodded and looked back out the window. She had never been near little kids and for this length of time.
"So have you heard about the war?" Haku asked her quietly.
"The war?" she raised her eyebrows and looked at him from the corner of her eye.
"Yeah", he replied sadly," Mommy was telling me about it this morning."
"What do you think about it?" she asked curiously.
"I think that guys mean", he told her and looked into her eyes seriously.
"What guy?"
"The big mean fire guy!" he told her and she watched as his eyes brimmed with tears," I don't want mommy, daddy, you to get hurt!"
Azula backed away a little in surprise. She just met this kid and he is already concerned about her?
"Why are you worried about me?" she laughed a little.
"Cause your my aunt and I don't want you to get hurt!" he told her," We don't want people we love to get hurt, right?"
He loves me? she smiled to herself. I have a nephew, a family member by blood who loves me!
"You're right!" she told him and nodded, hate leaving her and her heart filling with a type of happiness that she hasn't felt in what felt like an eternity.
"Haku", she risked placing her hand over his on the armchair. Her heart swelled when he didn't pull away from her touch," I can promise you nothing is ever going to happen to mommy, daddy, me, or any of their friends. Okay?"
"You promise?" Haku looked up at her.
"Cross my heart", she gave a small smile," We're going to beat those idiots!"
"Mommy says it's not nice to call people names", Haku scolded her.
"Well if they weren't idiots I wouldn't have to call them that", she told him.
"I agree", he smiled at her," I like you."
"I like you too, Haku", she smiled at him.
From the entrance of the library Zuko looked at his sister and his son bond and couldn't help but smile from the shadows.
So there it was!
