Chapter Twenty-Eight : Two Blue, Two Pink, or One of Each
Over the next two weeks, Freddie spent every free moment helping Sam study for her GED exam. Sam went to take the test and felt confident that this time she had passed. She really hoped she had done well, as it was her last chance to take the exam before college courses began.
A week later the results were back, and Sam found out that she had gotten a passing score. The next step was to register for college classes and meet with her advisor. After she had all that set up, she felt better considering classes would be starting in less than a month. Carly and Melanie were so excited because they had some of the same classes as Sam.
Sam hadn't actually spoke to Melanie directly, but she wasn't upset or angry with her sister. Melanie just didn't understand. On the other hand, Melanie felt bad for upsetting Sam considering Sam was pregnant and experiencing troubles such as fainting. Sam knew that in the long run, she and Melanie would make up and everything would be fine. They always did.
Thankfully Mrs. Mendenhall would be able to look after Little Fredward and Guppy when Sam, Freddie, and Gibby were in classes. Life would be busy, because the three of them also had jobs as well as college. Once the courses started, Sam and Freddie would be so occupied with classes, work, etc. Sam wondered if they would ever find time for each other.
Sam had a couple of morning classes with Carly and Melanie, but would not see Freddie until lunch-time. Plus she had a class with Freddie in the early afternoon. Always by late afternoon, Sam was exhausted. She was doing everything she could to avoid falling asleep while in class.
After a particularly long day of classes, Sam, Freddie, Carly, Gibby, and Melanie had gone to the Groovy Smoothie to celebrate making it through their first week of classes. Sam ordered a Banana Blast when T-Bo came to take their orders. She propped herself up against Freddie trying to stay awake as Carly was going on and on about her psych class and the hot guy who was now her study partner.
"Really, what's he look like?" Melanie asked.
Hearing all about the hot guy, Gibby actually looked jealous. Carly was too busy gushing all over her new study partner to notice Gibby's discomfort.
"He has dark hair, sexy brown eyes, and a gorgeous smile," Carly told Melanie.
"So, what's his name?" was Melanie's next question.
"His name is Adam. And he's coming over tonight to study with me," Carly replied. "I want you guys to meet him."
"Kewl. We'll have a pizza party," Melanie said with excitement.
"Yayyyy!" Carly said happily.
"Yeah... yay," said Gibby, but Sam could tell his heart wasn't into it. He didn't want Carly to be attracted to this other guy.
Their smoothies had arrived and Sam took a long sip of hers. The pizza party sounded fun, and she was curious about this guy Adam that Carly kept going on and on about.
Freddie had listened to the girls and tried not to roll his eyes while he was sipping on his smoothie. He had noticed Gibby's less than enthusiastic reply about the party idea. He wondered if there was something going on with Gibby- like maybe he liked Carly; he knew they had started to spend time together for a bit, but then neither had said much about it after that, and now she was talking about some new dude.
"After we finish these smoothies, we should all head home then," Sam spoke up. "Guppy should be home from school, and we need to relieve Mrs. Mendenhall."
"Alright," Carly agreed. "Adam is coming over at 5 PM. Just wait till you meet him, guys! He's sooo sweet. And he's soooo hot."
Sam looked at Carly. Dang! When DIDN'T her best friend think some dude was hot? Was Adam really all that hot? Or was this just another of Carly's little crushes? And what about poor Gibby? He'd already been hurt by Tasha. It just didn't seem fair.
Melanie was on her cell phone, calling Spencer and inviting him over to the pizza/study party. Ever since she and Sam's 18th birthday, she and Carly's older brother had been dating. The two seemed very happy together.
"Freddie, Sam, I'm heading home now. Wanna catch a ride?" Gibby asked his housemates.
"Sure," Sam replied, standing up and grabbing her smoothie. She hadn't seen baby Freddie since before classes that morning. She needed to get home and feed him.
Freddie nodded. "Sounds good," he said. He headed out with Sam and Gibby. He was eager to get home to his little son.
XoooXooo
When they got back at the house, Mrs. Mendenhall was in the living room with the children. Guppy was eating a snack at the coffee table and watching Girly Cow while Mrs. Mendallhall was cuddling baby Fredward. While Freddie paid the sitter, Sam went to take the baby. "Hey Sweetie," she said, kissing his little face. "Momma missed you sooo much!"
Fredward II smiled and cooed at his mommy. "I'm gonna feed him and then put him down for his nap," Sam told Freddie, before heading upstairs with the baby.
Freddie watched Sam leave with their son and he couldn't help but smile. He couldn't wait for the twins to arrive now. Even though they would have a lot to do before their arrival, it was exciting to think about having twins with Sam.
After Mrs. Mendenhall had went home, Guppy was talking to Freddie and Gibby. "Where's Carly?" Guppy asked.
"She'll be here soon," Gibby grumbled, still upset about Carly gushing about Adam.
A few minutes later, Melanie and Carly arrived. "You guys hungry for some pizza?" Carly asked Gibby, Freddie, and Guppy.
"Pizza?! My favorite!" Guppy replied with happiness.
"What kind of pizza did you get?" asked Freddie.
"We got a little bit of everything," Carly told Freddie.
"Yep, and we even got Sam's favorite; ham and pineapple," Melanie spoke up.
Just then the doorbell rang and Gibby went to answer it. It was Spencer. He went to Melanie and took her in a huge hug.
Minutes later, the doorbell rang again, just as Sam had emerged from upstairs. This time it was Carly's psychology study partner, Adam. Carly began introducing Adam to everyone. "Hey," Adam said with a charming smile. Adam was amazed by all the gorgeous ladies, but one in particular had caught his eye.
"We hope you like pizza, Adam, cuz we are having a pizza party tonight," Carly stated.
"Sure, I love pizza," Adam responded.
"Great," Carly said with a happy smile.
"Mama's starved," Sam spoke up. She sunk down on the couch next to Guppy.
Freddie nodded hello to Adam, then when Sam appeared, he sat down beside Sam, putting his arm around her. "Well, as soon as the pizza gets here, then we won't hold you back," he promised his wife. It was wild to him that she was eating for three now, because she ate A LOT normally to begin with.
Sam cuddled up to Freddie when he sat down next to her on the couch. She inhaled his scent as she pressed her cheek to his chest and listened to his steady heartbeat. "If the food doesn't arrive soon, I'm gonna eat Freddie," she said teasingly. But just then, the pizza delivery boy arrived at the door, saving Freddie's life.
Carly and Melanie went to answer the door as everyone was laughing at Sam's comment. Carly paid for the pizzas and went to carry them into the kitchen. Everyone started heading into the kitchen to grab some pizza. "I want pepperoni!" Guppy cried out.
"And I want ham and pineapple!" Sam exclaimed. That was her favorite. She had to use Freddie for leverage as she got up off the couch. She was nearly in her second trimester in the pregnancy and already she had grown quite a "baby bump."
Freddie had pretended to look scared, but luckily the pizza arrived so he was relieved. He chuckled when Sam and Guppy called out what they wanted to eat. He got up to grab some plates and napkins for everyone, bringing them over.
Everyone started filling up on pizza. It was hot and delicious. Sam was starving. With this pregnancy, she was always hungry and often tired. Thankfully, it was a Friday night, so she didn't have to worry about any studying or homework tonight. Adam chatted with everyone as Melanie and Spencer were snuggling up to one another. After her seventh slice of pizza, Sam was finally full. Then she started yawning. Even though she was getting tired, it was much too early for bed.
Freddie had finished eating. He cleared the table of his and Sam's plates. "Do you need anything else. baby?" he asked Sam.
"Sleep," Sam told Freddie with a smile as she took his hand and pulled him down close to her. "But it's too early for that." Lately, that's all the alone-time she and Freddie had, when they were sleeping and in bed cuddling together, otherwise their friends and family were always around.
XoooXooo
On Monday Sam went to class and discovered a new student had transferred into her biology class. To her surprise, it was Adam, the guy who was Carly's psychology study partner. "Hi, Sam," said Adam, giving her a handsome grin.
"Hey," Sam said as Adam took a seat beside her.
The biology professor said he was pairing up the students as lab partners, and sure enough, Sam got partnered with Adam. "I know we are gonna be great friends," Adam said, winking at her. Sam didn't know what to think of that. He was cute and seemed nice enough, but she didn't feel like being all that "friendly" with him.
XoooXooo
After another full day of classes, Sam met Freddie at the Seattle Women's Clinic where his dad worked. She was eager for her ultrasound. Today they were going to find out the sexes of the babies. Sam was very excited, anxious to find out if they were having two boys, two girls, or one of each.
"Are you ready for this?" Sam asked her husband as they sat in the waiting room, holding hands.
Freddie held Sam's hand in his. "Yeah," he said. "I am ready. I want to know what our twins are going to be.". It would help them to prepare for the arrival of the twins. He hoped Baby Freddie would love his new siblings.
Sam gave Freddie a smile as the nurse called her name. It was time for the ultrasound they had been anxiously awaiting. A few minutes later, Sam was on the exam table and Jonathon came in. "Hey, how's things going for my son and his beautiful wife?" Jonathon asked with a huge smile.
"Things are going great, but I am getting huge fast. And I'm always tired... and hungry; ravenously hungry," Sam replied as the nurse applied a warmed gel to Sam's growing tummy.
"Well, that's because you have two growing babies in there," chuckled Jonathon.
"Let's take a look and see how those babies are doing," Jonathan said, getting everything set up for the ultrasound. Sam held Freddie's hand, anxious to see their new babies.
Freddie smiled back as he lightly squeezed Sam's hand. He was so glad that his dad was Sam's doctor. His dad had come through for them so much with the birth of Baby Freddie. He knew that Sam was in good hands when she had the twins. He wouldn't trust any other doctor near his wife and unborn children.
"The babies are both doing great," Jonathon informed them as he pointed out the two strong heartbeats, plus the tiny arms and legs of each tiny baby.
"And it looks like Baby A is a little girl," Jonathon told them happily. Sam looked at Freddie and smiled.
"Told ya; you're gonna get your little girl this time," said Sam to Freddie.
"What about Baby B? Boy or girl?" Sam asked Dr. Benson.
Freddie couldn't help but grin. "Meatball Mobile," he joked. Then he waited for his dad to comment on the sex of the second baby. He was glad that both of the twins were healthy and that Sam was as well.
Sam laughed when Freddie mentioned the "Meatball Mobile." She did have a feeling that one or both of the babies would have a personality like hers. That would be an interesting mix, since baby Freddie was so laid back like his daddy. "They sure are active. What have you been eating?" Jonathon teased his daughter-in-law.
"I've been having some strange cravings," Sam admitted. "I had cornflakes and rootbeer for breakfast."
"What a combination," Dr. Benson laughed.
"The suspense is killing me..." Sam said as she waited to find out the gender of Baby B.
"Two girls," Jonathon spoke. "Little Fredward is having TWO baby sisters."
Freddie's eyes went wide. "Ohhh no. Does this mean I need to make TWO Meatball Mobiles?" This family was certainly going to be interesting. He loved them so much though. He kissed the back of Sam's hand gently.
Sam was all smiles when she heard that both babies were extremely healthy and little girls. She felt Freddie's soft kiss on the back of her hand and knew that he was happy, too. Soon they would have two little girls to care for, along with their adorable son. "Wait till Melanie hears the news," Sam said with excitement, as she knew her twin would be excited about having two darling baby neices.
Freddie grinned. "She will like that," he agreed. He knew that Melanie would be excited. She'd probably go out and buy matching baby stuff as gifts.
"Are the babies identical like Melanie and me?" Sam asked Freddie's dad.
"It's difficult to tell at this point actually as the babies are very small. We'd have to do a level 2 or possibly a 3D ultrasound to determine if they are identical or fraternal. And sometimes that isn't even conclusive. We might have to wait until the birth to be sure ... and sometimes it takes a DNA test to be absolutely certain," replied Jonathon.
"Since they are twins, will they be arriving early?" was Sam's next question. "Mom said Melanie and I came almost four weeks early. She wasn't expecting us so soon, so we were born on a bus..."
"It's possible the babies could arrive earlier than your due date. You will need to take some extra precautions to avoid preterm labor. Toward the end, you will have to rest and stay off your feet," Dr. Benson predicted. Sam knew that would be difficult with her job, baby Freddie, as well as her college classes. All of it would certainly be a challenge.
"I feel like a huge cow already," Sam grumbled.
"You're beautiful, baby, and you know it," Freddie said. "I'll rearrange my schedule towards the end of your pregnancy so that I can be around to help you as needed." He didn't want Sam dealing with everything alone.
Sam gave Freddie a half-smile when he claimed she was beautiful. She wondered if he would still be feeling that way when she was 8-9 months pregnant with twins. The nurse helped Sam up from the exam table so she could get ready to leave. She hugged Freddie as soon as they were left alone in the exam room. "We are gonna have two babies," she said happily.
"Well, three, including baby Freddie," she added with a little laugh.
Freddie chuckled. "We have our own three little bears now. But I am really excited. We are gonna have two new beautiful additions to our little family. I love that and I wonder what they'll be like."
"You heard your dad. They are wild and active," Sam teased Freddie as she got dressed and they left the doctor's office together. She too was excited about the babies, but also concerned about how they'd manage everything. Three babies were going to be a lot of work, plus they had jobs and college, too. Sometimes it was mind-boggling.
After they got home, Sam and Freddie announced to their friends and family that both the twins were going to be little girls. Melanie jumped up and down happily and honorary Aunt Carly was ecstatic as well. "Congrats," Gibby told Sam and Freddie with sincerity.
Gibby suggested that they convert the guestroom into a nursery for the three little ones and that Sam and Freddie could take the master bedroom which had once been his mother's room. "My mom would want that," Gibby told his friends.
"Wow, Freddifer, we need to get two more cribs... AND two more carseats," Sam pointed out.
Freddie was glad their friends were happy for them. He nodded when Sam mentioned the need for two of this and two of that. "Tomorrow after class, if you're free, we can go shopping," he suggested. He realized that they'd need a LOT of things for the twins.
"Sure, we definitely will do some baby shopping," Sam agreed, giving Freddie a soft kiss on the lips.
"I want to buy the baby girls identical pink outfits!" Melanie said with excitement.
"Woah there!" Sam said, shaking her head. "You are NOT turning my daughters into pansy little flowers. Nothing identical ... and nothing PINK." Sam shuddered at the revolting and unpleasant thought.
"So, what are you going to name the babies? Have you gotten any ideas yet?" Carly asked.
"I dunno. Any ideas, Frednub?" Sam asked her sexy dork.
"You could name em after me, Gabby and Libby," suggested Gibby with a huge grin.
"Uhhhh ... no..." Sam disagreed.
Freddie tried not to laugh and he pondered for a moment. "Well, I think one should be named after her mother. After all, our son is named after me. So it's only fair, right?" he asked Sam with a smile.
"Alright, we can name Baby A Samantha and call her Sami for short," spoke Sam, giving Freddie a smile. "Now we just have to come up with a great name for Baby B. And middle names for both as well."
"I'll help you come up with some names, Sis," Melanie promised her twin.
"Great, but nothing too girly or prissy," Sam said as she rubbed her swollen stomach. "I'm not naming her Penelope Primrose or anything jank like that."
Freddie chuckled as he looked at Sam. "Pescetarian Princess," he said, trying to keep a straight face as he said it, but he was failing miserably. He wanted to laugh so badly. He knew Carly, Gibby, and Sam would get the joke behind the name, but Melanie might not unless Sam told her.
"Ohhh no, Fredward. Our baby girls are definitely gonna love meat. Remember those meatball mobiles you gotta make," Sam reminded him teasingly.
