Chapter Thirty : A wild Roller Coaster Ride
A few weeks had passed, and Sam was feeling much better ... or so she thought. She had no clue that something really big was about to happen. Something life-changing.
Sam was with Adam in the student lounge working on their Biology project. Sam was bored, chewing on her pencil. She didn't even notice that Adam was gazing at her with a dreamy expression on his face. She was totally clueless that he was crushing on her. Sam was way too preocuppied to notice. She was too involved with her studies, her job, her husband, her baby boy, and her pregnancy to think of much else.
"Sam, you really love Freddie, don't you?" Adam asked all out of the blue.
Sam looked up from her biology text book, settling her gaze onto Adam. "Yes," she replied. "But why are you asking me this?"
"I dunno. I just wondered what it would be like, loving someone... that much," Adam responded softly.
"You've never been in love before?"
"Yeah... but- well, she doesn't love me back. She loves someone else."
"Ohhh," Sam replied, thinking of Freddie's long-time crush he had on Carly. "I know what that's like ... it sucks."
Sam stood up then as she was very hungry as usual and wanted a snack from the nearby vending machine. The minute she stood upon her feet, she nearly fainted. The room began to spin wildly, and Sam went totally white.
"Sam? What is it? Are you okay?" Adam asked frantically, standing up and going to her side.
Sam stared at Adam, but she looked right through him. "It's okay... I'm fine..." she said in denial as she pitched forward and fell right into Adam's arms.

Freddie was at the library. Hehad been wrapped up in some tech project. He had finished most of his school stuff already. He was trying to hurry and get everything done so he could spend time with Sam and their baby son once they were both home.
He stopped what he was doing though when he got this strange, nagging feeling as if something was seriously wrong. "Sam!" he said, dropping what he was doing. He grabbed his phone as he rushed out the door, dialing her number.
Freddie tried calling Sam again and again, but he got no answer. Desperately, he called Carly, while he was rushing around in an attempt to find Sam's whereabouts. He had this awful sinking feeling that something was wrong with his wife.
XoooXooo
Adam pushed the stray tendrils of long blond hair from Sam's face. "Sam, what is it?" he coaxed. "Are you okay?" Sam wasn't responding; she was out cold. Adam lifted her carefully into his muscular arms. Her cheek rested against his broad chest.
"Sam?" he spoke to her, his voice urgent with worry. She was so pale. Perhaps something was wrong with the babies. He heard Sam's cellphone ringing persistantly and with his free arm, he reached for it. He looked, seeing the caller was Freddie.
"I don't think so..." he said, tossing the phone aside. He had to get Sam to the hospital ... NOW. To hell with Freddie.
Adam carried Sam outside to the parking lot and carefully placed her into the backseat of his car. He rushed her to the hospital as quickly as he could. When he got there, he drove right up to the ER entrance. "Hey, I got a pregnant lady here... She needs some help!" Adam yelled urgently. It only took a moment and some hospital personel came running toward his car.
They got Sam onto a gurney and prepared to take her into the hospital. "Are you the husband?" a nurse asked Adam seeing how concerned and loving he was to Sam, holding her hand and promising her that everything would be okay.
"Yes, I am," Adam lied.
"We will take good care of your wife," promised the nurse as they got ready to take Sam inside to examine her.

Carly got worried when she received Freddie's call because she could hear the urgency and panic in his tone. "Sam stayed on campus after classes today to work on her Biology project with Adam," Carly explained.
"I'm sure everything is alright, Freddie," said Carly as she attemped to calm him.
Meanwhile, Adam was waiting in the hallway as the hospital staff took care of Sam. After about 20 minutes, a nurse came out to speak to him. "Is Sam okay?" Adam asked the nurse worriedly.
"We have her hooked up to a fetal monitor. Did you know she is carrying twins?" the nurse asked Adam.
Adam nodded, his worry for Sam prominant in his features. "Are the babies alright?" he questioned.
"So far both babies seem to be doing well and they have strong heartbeats. But our main concern right now is your wife. She is waking up... and asking for you."
Adam nodded, following the young nurse into Sam's hospital room. Little did she know that Sam indeed wanted her husband, but it wasn't him.
As soon as Adam got to Sam's bedside, she began asking questions. "Adam! What happened?" Sam demanded. "Did I pass out? And where the hell is Freddie? Why haven't you called him yet?" Adam looked helpless as Sam bombarded him with questions.

After talking to Carly, Freddie rushed to the university and searched the campus, but couldn't find Sam anywhere. He was worried now when he wasn't able to find her. He checked all the other places she frequented; her favorite restaurant hangouts, but there was still no sign of Sam. "Carly, she's not here," he said sadly into the phone. "I can't find her anywhere."
In the meantime, when Freddie had gone to the campus searching for Sam, Carly had tried calling Sam's cell phone with no result. When Freddie called back, saying he had seen no sign of Sam, Carly said, "Alright then, I'll call Adam. We're going to find them, Freddie. Don't worry. Adam wouldn't let anything happen to Sam."
XoooXooo
Sam got pissed when Adam seemed to be ignoring her quesions. When some doctor she did not know came into the room to examine her, she screamed at him. "Don't touch me, you old geiser! I want Dr. Benson, my father-in-law. Someone find MY doctor and MY husband!" she hollered.
From her hospital bed, she grabbed Adam by his shirt collar and shook him. "Get Freddie now or I am going to get up out of this hospital bed and LEAVE!" Sam demanded.
The nurse looked at Adam and Sam in confusion. "I thought you said YOU were the father," the nurse said to Adam.
"Uhhh.. well, I..." Adam stammered, seeing the furious gleam in Sam's eyes.
"HE is not the father of my babies!" Sam cried out. "He's just some dude I have for my biology partner!"
Adam's expression became downcast, hearing Sam's harsh words. Yeah... she'd never want him! Sam only wanted Freddie. How in the world would he ever change that?!
XoooXooo
Freddie hoped that Carly was right about this Adam guy, but he trusted Carly, his dearest friend. "Okay," he agreed. "I'll keep looking and you call Adam."
As he continued with his search, he really hoped nothing was wrong with Sam or their unborn babies. He then dialed his father's number, in hopes that maybe Sam had gone in for a last minute check-up or something along those lines.
Jonathon was doing rounds in the hospital when he got a call from his son. Freddie sounded quite frantic as he didn't know Sam's whereabouts. "No, I haven't heard anything from her... and she doesn't have an appointment today," Jonathon explained.
Carly was placing a call to Adam. But Adam wasn't answering. He was too busy being manhandled by Sam. "Get Freddie and get him now!" Sam insisted.
Seeing how irrate Sam had become, the nurse got on the phone to page Sam's doctor. While on the phone with Freddie, Jonathon got the page. "Sorry, Freddie... I gotta go," he apologized. "There is some sort of medical emergency here at the hospital. I promise, I'll call you if I hear anything at all from Sam."
Jonathon ended the call with his son, then headed down the hallway to the nurse's station to find out the status of his page. Adam practically slid to the floor after Sam had finished with him. For someone 6 months pregnant with twins who had recently passed out, Sam was incredibly strong. Adam's brains were scrambled by the rough shaking she had given him.
"Okay, I'll call Freddie, Sam. Just calm down," Adam finally gave in. With Sam giving him a vicious glare, Adam proceeded to get Freddie on the phone.
"Freddie, it's Adam. I'm with Sam at the hospital. She collapsed... and she wants you," Adam explained. Adam knew that once Freddie got to the hospital, Sam wouldn't give him a second glance. Damn Freddie. Adam totally despised him!
Freddie quickly said he would be there. He rushed to the hospital. He really hoped that Sam and their babies were okay. When he arrived at the hospital, he raced through the doors. He made a sudden stop at the front desk to ask for Sam's location.
A nurse had directed Freddie to Sam's hospital room. At that point, Jonathon was also in the room, looking Sam over. She let him check her out, actually relaxing a fraction when in her father-in-law's care. "Are the babies okay?" Sam asked Jonathon. Before Dr. Benson could answer, Freddie had came in. Adam stood in the corner, his brains still scrambled from Sam's rough treatment of him earlier.
"Freddie!" Sam gasped when she saw her husband come in with the nurse.
"Baby, what happened? Are you okay? Are the babies okay?" Freddie questioned as he went to Sam's side and took her hand into his.
"I fainted again," Sam replied, giving Freddie's hand a little squeeze when he had come to her side. "Our little girls are causing trouble already, and they aren't even here yet." Sam smirked a little when she said those words.
"It was scary though..." she spoke with a shudder, just longing for Freddie's comforting arms around her. She was feeling tons better, just knowing that he was by her side.
As Sam and Freddie were speaking, Jonathon was monitoring both babies vitals via the device wrapped around Sam's bulging stomach. "I think we need to do a sonogram," he said with a sigh.
"Are the babies okay?" Sam asked him urgently. She needed reassurance that both of the twins were alive and well.
"Sam, try to stay calm," Jonathon spoke. "According to the baby monitor, they are doing fine... but we need to do an ultrasound just to be safe..."
Freddie looked at his father, his face stamped with worry. "Safe from what? What are you thinking might be wrong?" he asked in concern as he held Sam's hand.
"Probably nothing..." Jonathon answered his son. "But we have to double-check their growth, heart rates, and make sure everything is as it should be."
"Sam, what happened when you fainted? Have you been resting and taking it easy as I advised? And have you been getting enough to eat?" Jonathon asked Sam.
"I was actually standing up to get a snack when I passed out," Sam replied, remembering the incident. "And yeah... I eat all the time..."
The nurse went to get an ultrasound machine as Jonathon was talking with Sam. He was worried that Sam might be overdoing things and not getting proper nutrition. A twin pregnancy was far more taxing on the body than a pregnancy with a single baby. Sam was young, but quite small of stature and already she looked almost due, even though she was just a little over 6 months along.
Hearing his dad's words, Freddie hoped that Sam took it easy when he wasn't around. He knew that when he was with his wife, he made sure she took it easy. He waited to see what his father would say about Sam's latest fainting spell.
"I'm going to go wait in the hallway," Adam spoke up when the nurse entered the room with the ultrasound machine and they got ready to lift Sam's nightgown so they could perform the sonogram.
In the hallway, Adam called his employer, Marissa Benson. "I'm sorry, Mrs. Benson," he said with a big sigh. "Things aren't going as planned."
XoooXooo
According to the ultrasound both twins were active with strong heartbeats. "Everything is fine. And their growth is good. But there is something I have to tell you, Sam... and you aren't going to like it," Jonathon spoke.
"What is it?" Sam asked with worry in her voice.
Freddie was worried as well as he squeezed Sam's hand gently in his. He hoped nothing was seriously wrong with Sam.
"Sam, when you came into the hospital, the staff did some tests in the ER and discovered your blood sugar was very low. You are hypoglycemic. That means you aren't getting enough nutrition for yourself and the babies, so when you stood up go get the snack, it lead to you passing out. When you are carrying twins, you need to eat a great deal more than you did when carrying one baby. You need a total of approximately 3000 calories per day to keep both yourself and the babies healthy. I know you've been busy with baby Freddie, your job at the Groovy Smoothie, plus college, but I think for your health and the health of the twins, something has to give. Sam, I don't want to have to do this, but I am going to have to put you on partial bedrest," explained Jonathon. "You can get up to use the bathroom, take a shower, and have meals, but other than that, I want you lying down on your left-side, getting plenty and rest, and proper nutrition. If necessary, I will hire a private nurse to come over to care for you..."
Sam didn't say anything at first, just stared at Jonathon in shock. She had to give up her job? And school?
She then looked over at Freddie as if somehow begging him with her eyes to talk his dad out of this crazy idea.
"Could she maybe do her classes online or something, even though she'll be on bedrest?" he asked his dad. They'd make the one job thing work at least for awhile. But school was important- well, even though Sam wasn't exactly excited about school, it was still important.
"Sure, I think that could be arranged. You could talk to the college, too, and I'm certain they'd make special arrangements on her labs and projects of that nature. Sam, the twins will be here in less than three months. Remember how we talked about how twins tend to come three to four weeks early? It won't be long at all. And the goal is that you will have two healthy babies when it's all over," Jonathon said to her gently.
Sam didn't say anything, just hugged Freddie tight as she tried not to cry. She did hope their little twins would be okay and born healthy, but this pregnancy had been a wild roller coaster ride. Finally Sam spoke. "Okay, I promise I will rest in bed and do whatever it takes to get the twins here, healthy and safe... but I really don't like it much."
Freddie kissed the top of Sam's head. "It'll be alright," he told her gently. He would do his best to help Sam out; no matter what.
Sam hoped Freddie was right. It sure looked like they had a long road ahead of them.
XoooXooo
Over the months that followed, Sam spent a great deal of time in bed resting on her left side, as per doctor's orders. The twins were quickly growing, and Sam was huge and miserable. She was now 3 weeks from her due date and anxious for the babies to arrive.
Little Freddie too had grown a lot over the past few months. He was 10 months old now and quite an active boy. He was nearly walking already and could pull himself up to furniture on his tiny legs. Carly and Melanie helped out with his care whenever they could. Spencer and Gibby were a great help as well.
Sam was keeping up with her studies, although she wasn't allowed to go to campus. She did all her work online, and Adam came over once a week to help her with her Biology projects.
She had no idea that Adam was working for Freddie's mom, nor that he had romantic designs upon her. She was totally clueless...
