Silent Hill: Forgotten Sister

Chapter 10: Cemetery

I remembered I had to call Lisa. I don't really feel like talking to her at the moment so I'll just leave a quick message.

I'm home, made it safe and sound. :)

After typing up that message and pressing send, I grabbed my backpack and went inside. I have this bad feeling that the hospital will call the house sometime today or this week and tell them what had happened yesterday. Well I don't care. I am prepared for the punishment my parents will give me. I am also prepared for my death so I have nothing to worry about and I don't care.

I entered the house quietly. As I stepped on one of the steps, the light from the lounge area turned on. Shit! Fuck! I thought.

I slowly turned around and I saw my dad there, sitting on the couch with an angry look on his face.

"Hey dad," I greeted nicely as I walked towards him. "What are you doing up this late?"

"I could ask you the same thing," Adam snapped angrily. "Where the hell have you been?!"

Enough with the snapping! I thought. It's bad enough that I had to deal with Erika and now dad! Damn it!

"What the hell happened to your face?!" barked the retired colonel. " Why do your clothes look wrinkled?! I need answers now!"

"Well you see," I said. "I went on a date with this girl that I met the other day at work. Her name is Lisa. I took Lisa out to this fancy restaurant in Brahms and after dinner, we got mugged by this guy. Eventually, I kicked his ass, got Lisa's stuff back and from there, I took her to Toluca Lake so we can try to relax and not stress about the situation."

I lied once again and I hope my dad buys this. If not, goodbye world!

"So you called off work to go on a date in another town?!" Adam questioned angrily.

"No, no, no," I quickly. "I wasn't feeling well and I couldn't turn down my date. Lisa was very sweet and she gave me some meds! And how do you know I didn't go to work?"

"Jeffery called," the retired colonel said strictly.

"Ahh," I said.

Whenever I don't answer my cellphone, Jeff immediately calls the house phone. I told him not too so many times before but that fuck does not listen.

Adam sighed.

"Look," he said. "Just go upstairs and go to bed. I do not want to stress about you anymore before work. I am tired."

"Yes sir," I said.

"Next time when you pull this shit again, you better tell us," said Adam strictly. "Your mother and I were worried sick."

"Yes sir," I said.

I quickly walked upstairs. Whew! I thought. That went better than expected.

As I entered my bedroom, my phone vibrated. I looked at it and it was from Lisa.

Thank you for letting me know. I appreciate it.

. . .

Thursday; September 18, 2011.

12: 01 p.m.

I woke up and stared at the ceiling. I still stunk like chlorine, my face, head and ankle still hurt and I actually feel like shit. I am not looking forward for work today, I thought.

I climbed down the bunk bed and grabbed my phone. It was fully charged and I decided to call Jeff for once.

I sat on Josh's bed, dialed the crazy fuck's number and waited as it rung.

"HOW DARE YOU DON'T COME TO WORK!" yelled Jeff.

I took the phone away from ear for a few seconds because that weirdo left me dazed and deaf. Fucking Jeff! I thought.

"Hey buddy," I said. "I'm doing fine, thank you for asking."

"Thank you for finally getting a hold of me," answered Jeff sarcastically.

"Thank you for leaving a hundred messages," I said sarcastically back.

"Thanks for telling me that you're not coming to work ya ass," informed my best friend.

I rolled my eyes.

"I was busy doing shit," I said.

"Oh so you pretended to be sick just so you can do your own personal shit?" Jeff said annoyed.

"Everything is not about you when it comes to me," I said annoyed. "I had very important shit to take care of."

"Like what?!" yelled Jeff.

"Finding out what was in that room for one," I yelled back.

"Yea? What was in there?" questioned Jeff.

"Like I said, junk," I replied.

"Come on," said Jeff. "There had to be something worth your time in there."

I sighed.

"I'll tell you if ya keep your big mouth shut," I said.

"Don't worry," said Jeff. "If it's serious, then it's kept quiet."

"I have a sister who is locked up in Brookhaven Mental Asylum," I said softly.

Suddenly it went quiet. I could hear Jeff breathing on the other line.

"Jeff?" I questioned. "Are you all right?"

"That is a lie," said Jeff. "Your sister is dead. I remembered she died in the hospital because she drowned."

"No it's not a lie and you knew about her?!" I said. "Then why didn't you tell me?"

"Why would I want to bring up a dead family member?!" asked Jeff. "That is hella rude right there man. I know I can be dumb sometimes but I would never go that low."

"It doesn't matter because she is locked up in the asylum," I said.

"For what?" asked Jeff.

"Let's see," I said. "She has schizophrenia, she is scared of drowning, and she is scared of people forgetting her and let's not forget, everyone's favorite fear, the Boogeyman."

"Whoa dude," said Jeff. "That is not funny right there. That's sad and…crazy."

I sighed.

"I know it's not funny but I can't stand Erika," I said. "She is rude. She is depressing to be around with. Remember the blonde nurse we met the other day?"

"What about Lisa?" asked Jeff.

"She was Erika's nurse," I replied.

It went quiet for about five seconds.

"So you went to go visit your sister in the loony place?" asked my best friend.

"Yes," I said.

"I'm going over to your house to pick you up," said Jeff.

"What? Why?" I asked.

"I am going to take you to the cemetery to show you something," replied Jeff.

I sighed.

"Fine," I said. "It better not be anything stupid."

I hung up.

Even Jeff claims that Erika is dead, I thought. It's not true, she's alive. My parents are just liars and people will believe the most simplest lie.

. . .

I was sitting on the passenger side of Jeff's truck. He was making his way to the cemetery.

"I remembered Erika 'died' the same year when Mayor Bartlett's kid, Jay, ran away from home," informed Jeff. "Elle's sister, Diane, went missing that same year to. I also remembered Dr. Fitch saying that his son went to Florida for school."

"I remember that too," I said. "But I do not remember Erika at all. I was surprised when I found out that I had a sister."

"No one would bring it up because it would piss off your dad," informed my green eyed friend.

"Well whatever you do, don't tell my parents or Joshua or anyone for that matter," I said seriously.

"Don't they know that you know?" asked Jeff.

"No and I am not planning on telling them because from the beginning, mom and dad never wanted Joshua and I to know about Erika," I replied. "I am not going to mention Erika to Joshua. He doesn't need to suffer like I did yesterday."

"That's harsh," commented Jeff. "Even your face says suffering. Did Erika really do that to you?"

"Yupp," I replied. "She is very violent."

"Wow," commented the green eyed man. "I remembered when she was little. She was very sweet."

"I guess," I said.

Jeff pulled into the cemetery parking lot and the both of us got out.

"What did you want to show me?" I asked changing the subject.

"Just follow me," replied Jeff.

I nodded and followed him into the cemetery.

"You know what's funny," I said. "Erika threatened to kill me. She chucked a rusted kitchen knife and me and almost stabbed me with a pocket knife."

"No way!" commented Jeff. "How crazy!"

"Yea," I said.

My green eyed friend chuckled.

"What's so funny?" I asked.

"Just the fact that Erika wants to kill you," replied Jeff. "I have a feeling that when you two get together again, you guys are going to end up killing each other."

"I'm never going back to the hospital," I said. "Not for anything."

"Why don't you guys just makeup and put this whole thing behind you two?" suggested Jeff.

"It's going to be hard," I informed. "She hates me a lot. I hate her a lot. What are we even doing here in the first place?"

"I want to show you Erika's grave," said my green eyed friend. "I'm not crazy. You're the crazy one."

"Says the man who has been agreeing and commenting on my story," I replied.

"Yea, so you don't get mad dude," informed Jeff.

I sighed.

"Do you even believe me that she is alive?" I asked. "Even though we have been best friends forever?"

"To be honest, I am not sure," replied Jeff. "I remembered coming to her funeral. There was a lot of people here. Friends, family. It was crazy packed."

"Was I there?" I asked. "I don't remember."

"No," replied my green eyed friend. "I asked where you were but your parents didn't tell me anything. Hell, Joshua wasn't even there."

We entered the founders garden and we went to Shepherd family burial.

"Surprising," I said. "Joshua is the family favorite and mom and dad take him everywhere. I can't believe they didn't take their own children to their daughter's 'funeral.'"

"Yeah well your parents were very strange at that time," informed Jeff. "Look!"

Jeff pointed out a black rectangular granite headstone that was surrounded by real, fake and dead flowers along with candles and old toys.

There was an inscription that read:

Erika M. Shepherd

Loving sister and friend.

April 5, 1995 – June 16, 2001.

May the angels be with you my little darling.

On the grave stone are angel wings.

"I don't get it," I said. "My parents spent a shit ton of money for a waste of time funeral when they could have used that money to send Erika to a private school or a Catholic school like they did with me."

"Alex," Jeff said softly. "I'm not gonna tell you again. I witnessed your sister's funeral. I hate to break it to ya but Erika is dead. She's been dead."

The fact that Jeff keeps reminding me how Erika is 'dead' upsets me.

"Oh yeah? Well I witnessed an address that belongs to Brookhaven and I witnessed Erika's recent medical records and I witnessed Erika in person. I even witnessed a fucking fight with her!" I informed. "Yea cause dead people like to fight, right?"

"The fuck? Alex, you need to calm down," stated Jeff.

"How the hell can I calm down?" I asked. "Tell me Jeff, was the coffin open during the funeral?"

"I-I don't –

"Was it?!" I questioned impatiently.

"I don't even remember what I had for fucking breakfast, what makes you think I will remember Erika's funeral," informed Jeff. "That was like ten, eleven years ago."

It went quiet for a moment and I squatted down to look at Erika's grave. I am so lost. I don't get this. Whoever is doing this, they know how to fuck with me real good.

"Look," I said. "I'm sorry I snapped at you but please believe me."

"I don't know," said Jeff. "You'll have to take me to her or show me those records. Right now, I believe you're insane."

"Jeff," I said. "I don't want you to think I am insane. You're my friend; you're supposed to believe me."

"You're supposed to believe me when I said I was at Erika's funeral," informed Jeff. "You were not there."

"Neither were you at Brookhaven," I commented.

My green eyed friend sighed.

"Fine," said Jeff. "If Erika is alive, what do you think your parents put in the coffin?"

"I don't know," I replied. "Fake bones? Maybe some memories of Erika?"

"Why don't we come back tonight and dig up the grave?" suggested Jeff.

"That is a smart idea," I replied. "Though I am not going to take the chance to come here at midnight and get caught by the police. Also, I told you Erika is alive. Why won't you just believe me?!"

"Because I went to her fucking funeral!" replied Jeff.

"I went to the fucking hospital yesterday!" I yelled.

"Fine!" Jeff said irritated. "How about we come back at midnight and dig up the grave to see who is right? If we find bones, I am right. But if we find nothing, you're right. Deal?"

Of course we'll find nothing, I thought. Honestly, I would rather take Jeff to Brookhaven than waste my time trying to dig up Erika's grave.

"That is smart and all but I am not going to take the chance to come here at midnight and get caught by the police," I informed. "They're always roaming the streets at night."

Jeff said nothing but stared at me with a disappointing look. He looked like he was ready to blow up but he didn't. Well damn, I thought. Sorry to piss you off.

"I-I eh- W-what did I tell you about living more?" questioned my green eyed friend.

"I don't know," I sighed. "Be a man or some shit."

Jeff sighed.

"Look," he said. "Now that I think about it, you're right."

"Huh?" I questioned.

Jeff never backs out of his crazy plan. But why is he doing it now. Something is up.

"We will get in trouble because since this cemetery has the famous founders of Shepherd's Glen, police will be patrolling around this area looking out for burglars," informed my green eyed friend.

"Why are you backing out?" I asked.

"I don't wanna face jail time Alexander," replied Jeff. "Or maybe you're just a big pussy ass who doesn't want to look up information about his own sister."

Well that escalated quickly, I thought.

"But you just said-

"I was mocking you Alex," Jeff interrupted. "Why is it that Mayor Bartlett get to dig holes in his mausoleum and we can't? You're a Shepherd for Christ's sake! Like the other three families, you're a part of this town!"

I looked at Jeff and at the grave. I am curious to look in there but I don't want to get in trouble at the same time.

"If we dig up this grave, there is a fifty fifty chance that we'll be caught," informed Jeff. "What if destroy a little bit of property to make it look like the others got robbed, not just Erika?"

I don't want to do this but I want to see what my parents made a big deal with this grave.

"Fine," I said giving in. "We stick together like Siamese twins. Meet me at my house and we'll take the alley way to the cemetery."

"Atta boy," said Jeff. "I'll get some shovels and gloves at the hardware store."

"I'll bring flashlights," I said. "Dress up warm because it's going to be fucking cold tonight."

Jeff nodded.
