After the massive success of the girl on fire and her now-fiancée Peeta Mellark in last summer's Hunger Games, very few people seem to remember that Katniss Everdeen was not the first victor to have won after volunteering to save a younger sibling.
Wind back the clocks forty-four years and it's a cold, blustery reaping in District 6, where sixteen-year-old Blake Carlton rushes forward to the stage to volunteer in the place of his thirteen-year-old brother. But unlike Katniss Everdeen, Blake was no physical wonder. No previously unseen skill with a weapon, no amazing ability like Katniss' knack for climbing trees or her ability to hunt food. Just an ordinary boy who threw his name in to save those he loved.
There was no hype about Blake before the start of his Games; he was just one of the crowd, someone everybody thought was going to be killed off early before the real competitors - those from One, Two and Four - got down to the serious business. Even when he scored a highly respectable seven in training, the people here in the Capitol barely batted an eyelid.
Two weeks later, and everyone knew Blake's name. Somehow he had managed to get himself though the arena against the odds, hoarding weapons and keeping well-fed until, with two kills already under his belt, he had survived to be involved with the final fight of the Games. Fighting an uphill battle against the boy from District 2 who had been heavily backed by sponsors from the beginning, Blake pulled off one of the biggest shocks in Hunger Games history, catapulting him into the hearts of the whole Capitol in an instant.
The protagonist of the latest underdog story where the good guy won, Blake became, for a few years, a fan favourite, until much like his fellow victor Molly the fame caught up with him, leaving Blake a wreck of the man he once was. For a few years he became the tragic hero, and then just the reclusive addict as he fell further from recovery in a drug-induced haze in District 6. Lost to the world, the years have passed with little meaning for Blake for decades until the announcement of the Third Quarter Quell invigorated the victors of District 6 once more.
With a new purpose having been reaped for the 75th Annual Hunger Games, we can only wonder whether the never-give-up fighter of the 31st Hunger Games will make an appearance once more. We can only hope he will as, on a good day, Blake Carlton could take on the world.
A/N: OK, so you might have noticed that not all the victors in this fic are being portrayed as their own personal narratives have described them in related stories, but remember this - the Capitol are going to twist their image to whatever makes them popular. So there are some pretty cool differences in this, I think.
Still, let me know what you make of it all, as ever. Constructive criticism is still very much welcomed :)
