A/N: We've skipped past another district (11 this time) as District 11 also has just two living victors in my version of events - therefore this is the final mentor profile, for District 12's sole mentor, Haymitch Abernathy.
I had to fish out my old, well-worn copy of Catching Fire to check some of my facts for this one...
I hope you all enjoy the chapter :)
Mentor Profile
Haymitch Abernathy
Age: 41
District: 12
Hunger Games: 50th, aged 16
Mentored By: Michelle Patrick
Kills in the Arena: 4
Preferred Weapons: Knife
Tributes: Peeta Mellark and Katniss Everdeen
Mentoring Record: 24 Games/2 Victors - Katniss Everdeen (74th Games), Peeta Mellark (74th Games)
There are many victors who, aside from being the winner of a Hunger Games, look for some tenuous record to try and make themselves stand out among their peers. The tribute who killed the most with a bow. The tribute who won despite choosing to skip the feast. The tribute who won in the coldest arena. The tribute who went the longest without food and survived.
However, Haymitch can lay claim to not one, not two, but three genuinely impressive feats. He is the only living victor of a Quarter Quell, the only tribute to outlast more than twenty-three other tributes in the arena, and the only mentor to bring home two victors from the same Hunger Games.
Of course, that style of bragging is usually saved for the victors from Districts 1 and 2, and Haymitch is no exception to that rule, rarely taking the time to talk about his exploits and often preferring to pretend that his time in the arena never happened.
Even if the 74th Hunger Games hadn't panned out the way they had, Haymitch would have expected an increase in interest this years, as we approach the Third Quarter Quell. There are many among us who aren't old enough to remember the last Quell (almost everyone under thirty will have little memory of it), when twice as many tributes were reaped due to the Second Quell's unique stipulation.
The arena for that year's Games - a poisonous utopia - offered a different challenge to many others, something a young, wily Haymitch figured out earlier than many of his adversaries, who were punished for their unassuming behaviour. A volcanic eruption that wiped out most of the tributes from One, Two and Four left the way clear for outside threats. When Haymitch manages - with a little help from one of his district partners - to work his way past three of the surviving Careers, the arena was into the final ten tributes, and the boy from District 12 was by then among the favourites.
Armed with a knife and his own terrific speed, Haymitch managed to survive with his district partner, until the final five tributes, when his partner was killed by some of the Gamemakers' creations. In a scene with remarkable parallels with his protegee Katniss Everdeen's actions in last year's Games, Haymitch stayed with her while she died.
From there, Haymitch was firmly a fan favourite as the final battle of the Games approached, using the arena to his advantage to get past one of the girls from District 1 to win the 50th Hunger Games.
Like many fellow victors, especially for those who are forced to mentor every year for many of the outer districts, the constant grind of the Games have taken their toll on Haymitch, whose slide into alcoholism in his twenties was only accelerated by the premature death of his former mentor, Michelle Patrick, nearly fifteen years ago. Since then, Haymitch has been mentoring both tributes from District 12 each year as the sole living victor from the district, living alone in Victors' Village.
Eventually, however, the curse had to break, and last year District 12 finally tasted victory again, in the most incredible circumstances possible. Given a new source of life, Haymitch Abernathy managed to control the excitement around his pair of tributes, who took the hearts of everyone here in the Capitol. While a lot of the attention has rightly gone on the young lovers of District 12, Haymitch played his part in the victory to perfection, providing support to the pair at their times of need, particularly to Katniss during her most vulnerable stage near to the start of the 74th Games.
Finally, due to circumstances none of us could have predicted, Haymitch has managed to become the first mentor to bring home both tributes from his district in a single year. Certainly, the circumstances surrounding Katniss and Peeta's combined victory were out of his control, but it was under Haymitch's careful watch that both tributes survived through the arena, remaining alive through the most desperate of times. It was because of Haymitch's careful management that Katniss and Peeta had a chance to win the Hunger Games last summer.
Now, almost impossibly, we find ourselves in the same position, with Haymitch alone leading Katniss and Peeta into the arena once again. In a field full of favourites, the pain of seeing the star-crossed lovers of District 12 head back into the arena so soon after announcing their engagement has left all of us in shock.
More than ever, the pressure's on Haymitch to play his part and deliver the result that so many of us here in the Capitol want to see.
He's managed to achieve the possible once before. Who are we to say that he can't do it again?
A/N: Finally, all of the mentor profiles are complete! From here, there are only one or two more chapters to round up this fic, and then this rather short story will be complete :)
Anyway, if you enjoyed this chapter about one of the most well-known victors, please review! Constructive criticism is welcomed :)
