Authors Note: This is my first attempt at adding an original character who'll be around for the duration to the series. Yes, if you hadn't guessed Jess is my attempt at adding a younger character to the series as Luke is off at Uni. For any Sky fans out there, sorry she'll not be joining the cast of this series. I am understandably nervous about it, because I'm not just dropping her in – she won't be joining the family Smith right at the outset and she has a fairly detailed back story that I need to reveal slowly without just dropping it all on you at once.

Rani plucked the Bluetooth headset off of Clyde's head. "Do you really have to wear these things all the time? It's rude."

"Just because I'm much more hip to new trends in music that not everyone gets." Clyde smirked and made a playful grab at the headset that Rani held just out of his reach as they approached the lab where the Robotics Club was meeting.

Rani rolled her eyes. "You mean that god awful caterwauling that Sarah Jane made you shut off last weekend?"

"And she got me the headphones right after…" Clyde grinned then sighed and frowned. "I think she misses Luke."

"We all miss Luke." Rani handed the earphones back to him. "Just don't let her go overboard. I know she's paying you for doing the chores that he did before he went to Uni."

Clyde nodded as he set the headphones on the table full of flyers they were leaning against. "And Oliver teaching me to drive. Right…" He noticed the young dark haired girl standing outside the lab door and smiled wide. "Hey… You're one of the new kids. You should go on in – Professor makes everyone welcome."

"Not my thing…" The younger girl pushed off the wall and adjusted the uniform skirt that didn't quite fit properly.

"I'm Rani…"

"… Chandra. I know. Headmaster's daughter." The girl responded. "And he's Clyde Langer." She made her way past them, without another word, and disappeared round the corner.

"Well, she's pleasant." Clyde remarked. "Wonder what that's all about."

"She's one of the new kids from the group home." Rani filled in. "I heard my dad talking about them."

The door opened and a milling crowd of kids moved out of the lab in front of Oliver, waving and grinning, the air filling with excited chatter about the preparations for the competition they were entering. "So what's this then?" His gaze moved from the crowd of students in front of him to the pair waiting.

"You said…" Clyde started then slumped slightly as he took in Oliver's questioning expression.

"That I'd let you drive Bessie back to Bannerman Road." Oliver's expression changed and a teasing grin crossed his face. "Quite right."

Rani snorted in amusement as Clyde's expression changed to excitement. "Honestly, I'd rather you didn't, but I promised Sarah Jane I'd keep you both out of trouble."

"You know one of the group home kids were out here. Maybe she wants to join up with your science nerds." Clyde turned to the table and frowned. "Okay, Rani, where'd you put my headphones?"

"I gave them back to you. You set them on the…" Rani's gaze scanned the table as well. "… table." Then she looked under it. "They've disappeared."

"Oh come on…" Clyde groaned. "They were here when she left."

Oliver frowned. "Not sure I approve of that, Clyde." He paused. "And she wouldn't either. She's investigating you know."

"Who Sarah Jane?" Clyde and Rani both turned to Oliver.

"No," Oliver grinned. "Jessica Davies. The girl you saw out here. She's been wrongly accused and is out to prove someone else is behind the disappearances."

"You mean thefts." Clyde corrected.

"Not necessarily." He stuffed his hands in his pockets and started to walk down the hallway. "She's already got a suspect in mind." He chuckled.

"Really? Who?" Rani fell into step along side him.

"Me."

Her dad had always told her she had great instincts. Being a DI, he'd known about instincts. Not that he'd approve of what she was doing right now if he was still here, but she'd learned since he was gone that sometimes the ends justified the means. Sneaking back into the school hadn't been hard, but now as she sat under one of the computer desks and connected RJ-45 cable into the socket on her beat up laptop, now came the harder part.

Her fingers flew over the keyboard of her machine as she connected to various networks and slid through the backdoors into places she'd no business being. He'd always said she was too clever with a computer especially when she'd guessed his password and gotten onto his work computer so she'd been able to play silly Facebook games on his account. She'd only been nine at the time; which seemed a lifetime ago to the twelve year old especially with what had happened; and his solution had been to get her her own laptop. She glanced down at the trusty little device. It was so far out of date, but she could still do what she needed to with it.

"Got it." Jessica grinned and gave the computer a little pat as though it was a living thing. A video popped up on the screen. It was grainy, but being a CCTV image, she couldn't complain. When she'd started investigating Oliver Smith, she'd run a google image search and it had led her back to an image of John Smith – a teacher that had disappeared after the destruction of another school Deffrey Vale – who looked uncannily like Oliver. She could have just gone to Chandra with this, but given how chummy the Headmaster's daughter was with the teacher in question, she needed more proof.

Her attention fixed to the video and the events that were recorded there, children standing outside the school. A couple running like the devil was on their heels right before the school blew up. The man sure looked like the 'Professor' but the image quality was so horrible. She brought up the image enhancement software that one of her dad's workmates had installed for her on a lark. It wasn't anywhere near what they had on the professional systems, but it might give her a better idea.

She grabbed a screen capture and fiddled with it in the enhancer for a few minutes. It looked like him to her, but she knew the quality wasn't good enough to prove anything. Her nose wrinkled as she looked at the woman he had tucked under his arm. Who was she?

Jessica chewed her lip for another moment or two then entered a search into Google, looking for information on the Deffrey Vale incident. Several news articles came up and she clicked on each in turn until the photo beside the byline of the third article down caught her attention. It looked like the woman in the capture and her eyes widened as she saw the name beside the picture.

Another flurry of typing had her in the computer network of the school. She was certain she'd seen that name before. Nothing in this year's records. Maybe she'd been wrong. Her instincts told her she wasn't. Changing the search parameters' just slightly, she gave a little whoop as the results she wanted came up on the screen. Mother of a student who'd just finished his A levels last term.

"Sarah Jane Smith – now I don't think that's a coincidence."

"She what?" Sarah gaped at Oliver.

"Thinks that I'm responsible for the disappearance of the electronics at the school." Oliver answered as though that was a completely normal thing for one to suspect.

"And you think its fine for her to think that because…" He was such a clever man, sometimes she wondered how he couldn't see the permutations that these scenarios could work themselves into.

"Well, she's investigating isn't she? She'll sort out that it isn't me soon enough." Oliver nodded towards the kitchen. "Anyone else want a cuppa?"

A frustrated sigh escaped Sarah Jane, "Oliver, have you considered who you look like?"

"The Doctor, probably at least one face back."

Sarah nodded. "And when I met the Doctor again, wearing that face – what happened?"

"School full of big bat people pretending to be teachers."

"But what do you think the general public knows." Sarah carried on with false patience.

"That the school blew up and …" He fell silent as the pieces fell into place. "Oh… Right."

"John Smith disappeared… Not suspicious behavior at all."

Clyde let the silence continue for a moment as both the adults considered the consequences of Oliver's inaction then spoke up. "Aside from clearing Oliver's name, you know it is a little dodgy how my headphones disappeared into thin air. Maybe, we should you know investigate ourselves."
