Hiya guys!

First and foremost, Thanks a billion times for all reviews, PMs and follows! I've been in a real funk this last year.. Between moving, school, work and trying to have a life these kinds of hobbies had to take the shelf for some time. I've been trying to start it again, writing a line here and a line there, but I really haven't had the mindset for it until now.

So back to the task at hand! Here you have a brand new and smoking chapter! This is my so far longest chapter.
I hope you guys'll like it!

So R&R people and see ya later!

The only thing that could be heard in the baseroom was the gentle humming from the laptop on the table. Mai was nervously fidgeting with her fingers, not daring to look up just yet. The shocked silence was quite unnerving. 'Well understandable after hearing about my up-until-now unknown past.'. She carefully chanced a glance to her fellow friends and colleagues. Masako, John and Bou-san were making a perfect impression of a fish on dry land with their mouths wide open. Ayako had a tear slowly tracing down her cheek. Naru was shocked but tried to hide it with his usual stoic self. The only one who seemed unaffected of the sudden revelation was Lin. Mai was watching Lins face , getting lost in her thoughts as he was reading the newly-typed information. 'He.. He really is kinda cute when being deep in thought..' Mai felt herself blush at the thoughts and averted her eyes down to her hands again. Naru coughed slightly and shifted his weight "Well, this sheds some new light on this case at least." Mai just nodded, eyes still glued to her hands. "Mai... You said your mother used some kind of chanting to try and banish the entity... Do you remember the chant?" Mai looked up into the Chinese visible and then glanced of into space as she bit her lip in thought. "Hmm... Yes I think it went something like.. Xiang Mo Jue Qu Mo Jue Ju Mo..." Lins' eyes widened more and more as Mai continued and she noticed.. "I-is something wrong Lin-kun?" Lin opened and closed his mouth a couple of times, digesting the chant he just heard. "If you please.. What was your mothers name? Her maiden name?" The tension in the room was so thick in anticipation you could almost touch it. Mai shifted nervously under the scrutinizing looks from everyone. "U-uuuhmm.. M-Meiying... Jiang Meiying..." Lin gasped loudly, had he held anything he would have dropped it.. Naru looked worriedly between the young girl and his assistent. Lin stood up abruptly, pacing back and forth mumbling in chinese. Mai could only discern Jiang, her mothers' maiden name in his ramblings. 'What's so special about Jiang?' "Lin! What is all this about?" Narus' impatient and slightly annoyed voice called out. Lin stopped and looked at Naru and the looked down at the utterly confused Mai. "If what Mai says is true then she heirs from the formidable Jiang family. The most powerful, respected and in some cases feared priestesses in China." Everyone looked at Mai with shocked expressions making said girl cower. "The Jiang family or as most liked to call it, The Jiang Legacy, was the most sought after. Every high ranked family in china wanted to get married in to their legacy. They held great power and many sought their wisdom, their opinions, their help. They were that renowned." Mai felt her heart beating faster and harder, face growing hot and red. She saw all the stares from everyone and thoughts were running wild. She could feel their expectations. 'I'm not.. no.. I'm nothing special..' Mai panicked and did the only thing she could think of.. Run away.. She bolted through the door and ran, tears falling freely on her face. She heard voices far in the distance but she didn't dare to stop. She ran and ran and ran until she couldn't run anymore. When she finally stopped she found herself outside in a garden. She wanted to scream, she wanted to shout, she wanted to hit something. She never knew. All her life as she knew it, was a lie. Memories from younger times flashed before her eyes. Even though she now knew what her familys names were, what they looked like, how they sounded. Sure Gene had already told her a lot about her mother but she still had no idea who they were. She had no idea who she was. And it terrified her to the core.

[Base POV]
Lin watched Mai run out in panic, understanding her feelings. Everyone shouted at her to come back. "Let her go.." Ayako turned, her temper rising and an angry sneer on her face. "Let her go?! You want us to just let her run around in a mansion where there is an not only evil but also ancient antity that's after her?!" Her shrill voice made many of the rooms occupants wince. Lin took a deep breath and stared the miko straight in the eye. "She just found out that her whole life as she's known it up until today has been a lie.. She just found out that she descends from a legacy that stems from the Shang dynasty.. I think she is well entitled to some time alone.. Also she is not alone.. I sent two of my Shikis to protect her.." Ayako visibly bristled at the tone but backed off. Lin saved the document on his computer, turned it of and handed it to Naru. "I'll be back later.." Naru stood rooted to the floor. He hadn't seen Lin like this in all the years they had known eachother. He watched the the tall chinese walk out the door, leaving the room in total silence. He put the computer in its bag and turned to the rest of the team. "Takigawa-san, Matsuzaki-san go and check all the temperatures and cameras. Brown-san, Hara-san I want you to go and get a reading of this mansion again. Leave NO spaces unchecked. I want to find where most activity is and why." The two teams stood still rooted to the floor, staring at their obviously shocked young boss. Naru glared at them with his signature glare. "Now!" Both teams scuttled out the door, leaving their boss in deep thoughts.

[Mai POV]
She sat next to a tree, on a patch of grass in front of a pond, staring at the swimming koi. Her tears long sinces dried on her cheeks. Feeling something gently nudge her side she glanced down towards it and saw the most peculiar thing. A warm and mellow oblong orb was floating or bobbing to and from beside her, gently nudging her side.. The color was mostly a warm white but was tinted in almost blue color. It kind of reminded her of a cat in it's behavior. She carefully reached out her hand, stroking it where she thought the head would be. It seemed to like it, almost leaning in to her touch feeling warm and comforting. Another orb, slightly bigger, floated around her, almost jumping around.. It had the same white color but with a hint of red instead. It was wiggling almost kind of like a dog. Mai couldn't help but laugh at its behavior. "Well where did you come from?" She looked at them expectantly, hoping for some answers. She was pretty sure she knew where they came from, they both hade a familiar presence to them. They just floated back and forth, revelling in the attention they got from the young woman. "I see you've met two of my shiki.." Mai turned towards the voice and was greeted by Lin. He looked both surprised and sad.. 'Why does he look so sad?' She quickly lost her train of thoughts as she saw the two orbs float towards their master, joining three other orbs. Mai starred at the new orbs.. All of them had the same warm light but each where tinted with a different color. One orb was almost green in its tint floating around almost like leaves in the wind. The second was tinted with a rich brown tint giving of a strong earthy feel. The last one was by far the most prominent, a strong silvery gleam to it. It had by far the strongest presence. Mai was flabberghasted to say the least. 'How.. How have I not seen these before?' Lin was quietly observing the young female, seeing her eyes slowly scanning the rest of his Shiki. He slowly went over and sat down next to her. "I know they can be intimidating, I am a little surprised that you can see them, but then again not." Mai averted her eyes, looking at the koi pond again.. Lin noticed her discomfort and sat himself more comfortable gazing at the slowly setting sun. "I'm.. I.. uhh.. I'm sorry I just ran out.." Lin noticed new tears slowly falling down her cheeks.. He took a deep breath and gently put his hand on her cheek, gently brushing away the tear.. She carefully glanced at him and saw him gently smiling at her.. "You have nothing to apologize for.. I rather think I owe you a very big apology.. I shouldn't have put you there on the spot like that.." Mai felt him slowly retracting his hand but she leaned into it and put her hand on his. She felt him stiffen but slowly relax and gently caress her cheek with his thumb.. "There are so much I don't know. Sure I know more now than before. But I still feel like I know next to nothing... Gene told me a little about my mothers' powers but next to nothing about her lineage or anything like that.. I got scared that everyone expected me to just whip out those kinds of powers.." Lin chuckled warmly and gently hugged her. They sat so the were both leaning against the tree.. "I know how you feel.. My parents, especially my mother had exceptionally high expectations of me, being the oldest of five.." Mai glanced confused at Lin.. He took a deep breath and sighed. "You see I come from a long line of Onmyoji and my mother was very strict about my training. I praticed and trained every single day for fifteen years.. I never had a calm moment.. The day I turned 17 I told my mother I wanted to travel. I wanted to see the world.. "He smiled bitterly and shook his head staring of into the distance.. "Of course she wouldn't have any of that.. She went spouting on and on about me carrying on the legacy of our family.. I was so very tired of it all.. So I left.. I packed only some clothes and took the first flight out of Hong Kong, which happened to be to England.. There I met Naru's and Gene's parents whom hired me as teacher for their adopted twins.. And here I am.." Mai watched Lin with amazement.. She had no idea he'd had such a harsh upbringing.. "What about you parents now? Do they still talk to you?" Lin smiled gently at her and met her eyes.. "Yes they do. It took some convincing at first but they, in the end, listened to me and gave me their consent. Sure mother still goes on about wanting a grandchild.." He added with a exasperated sigh at the end. Mai giggled at the notion and cuddled into his chest, feeling warmth and security.. 'This is nice, I feel so relaxed' Lin sat completely relaxed, enjoying the warming presence of mai under the setting sun.. "Mai, would you like to get something to eat? Get some away time from this place?" Mai looked up into his warm gaze and smiled sincerely.. "I would love to." The both stood up and slowly walked around the mansion towards the cars, Lin texting Naru about their dinner plans so the rest wouldn't worry.

Lin opened the door to a small but very beautifully decorated restaurant. Mai looked around in awe. 'Kami.. I have never been to a place like this..' The waitress saw the pair and approached them.. "Good evening and welcome to the Jade Dragon. Dinner for two tonight?" Lin smiled and turned to the waitress chuckling. "That would be right, Yanyu." She beamed at Lin and hugged him. "Aaaah Xingxu! It's been such a long time! Sueh-Yén's been wondering when you'll be back! Just follow me and I'll get you seated." Mai looked on confused but followed after the waitress and Lin. When they were sat down Yanyu went towards the kitchen, leaving the two alone.. "Xingxu..?" Mai asked still confused.. Lin smiled and scratched his head.. "In chinese my name is pronounced as Lin Xingxu.. Even thought the kanji is the same it's pronounced differently. It's a little more inconspicous to use the japanese translation than my chinese while in Japan. Yanyu is my youngest sister, she married Sueh-Yén two years ago and moved here to open this restaurant." Mai nodded understanding and smiled at him. Soon Yanyu was back with a young man in chefs clothing.. Lin stood up and embraced the shorter man. "Aaah Sueh-Yén. Everything's been alright since last we talked?" The young man nodded. "Yes yes everything's been just alright. Have had a lot of costumers lately which is good." Lin sat down and started to look through the menu, Mai did the same and almost did a doubletake.. 'Th-these aren't prices I can afford.. Everything looks so high end!' "Ehh annoo.. Lin-kun.. I uuhh.. I don't think I can afford eating at such a high end restaurant.." Lin just looked at her a little shocked.. Then he chuckled and shook his head.. "Don't worry Mai, it's my treat.." Mai blushed deeply going red as a tomato.. "Y-you don't h-have to do t-that.." Lin smiled serenly at her and grabbed her hand gently.. "No, but I want to." She met his gaze, still blushing and felt her heart speed up as she was lost in his on grey eye.. 'During all the years we've been working together he's always covered one eye.. I wonder why..?' They both continued scanning the menus.. 'I have no idea what most of this is..' She carefully glanced over at the stoic man in front of her.. "Anoo.. Lin.. I uuhh.. Do you have any recommendations? I've never had chinese cuisine before.." Lin met her her gaze and then scanned the menu and smiled.. "Do you trust me to order for you?" He asked honestly.. Mai nodded and smiled.. When Yanyu came back he whispered their order and she went to the kitchen.. While waiting for their food to arrive Mais' curiosity got the best of her. "Lin.. Uhh.. Why do you always cover your right eye with your hair?" She quickly forced out almost so that Lin couldn't hear it.. 'I knew this was coming, thought it would come sooner though..' He slowly tucked his bang behind his hair and opened both eyes making Mai gasp.. "L-Lin you.. Your eye.. It's blue..!" He nodded a little warily about her reaction.. Not many he'd met so far took it well about his eyes, except his family and the Davis' family.. "It's.. So.. Pretty and beautiful.." Mai was completely mesmerized by the difference.. His left, normally visible eye was a dark and mysterious grey color while his right, normally covered eye was a vibrant blue color.. "I've never seen someone so beautiful.." Mai just realized what she'd said and bowed here head blushing. Not daring to meet his eyes..'Why did I say that.. Whyyy...?'She was screaming internally at her comment.. He probably thought she was just another snot-nosed kid.. 'Stupid, stupid stuuuupid!'She suddenly felt a gently touch under her chin, slowly tilting her head up. Mai opened her eyes and was met by Lin's warm gaze. "I could say the same about you Mai.."He moved his hand to hers on the table and gently grabbed it and moved it to his cheek.. "You've always been an enigma to me. Always stood up for what you believe in, no matter what anyone else thought. Even if everyone went against you, you'd still stand strong. You are brave, you are caring and still you don't quite see just how beautiful you are." Just as he was about to kiss her hand the door to the kitchen opened, Mai quickly retracted her hand blushing immensly at the words spoken. Both Yanyu and Sueh-Yén arrived with their food. Yanyu looked between her brother and the young woman, not much older than herself, but she felt an tremendous power flow from and around her. She turned to Lin. "Xingxu, Zhè shì nǐ de xīn nǚ péngyǒu ma?"(Xingxu, is this your new girlfriend?) Lin whom had just taken a sip from his soda coughed violently. "Shénme?! Nǐ wèishéme yào wèn?"(What?! Why do you ask?) Yanyu arched an eyebrow and glanced towards a very confused Mai. She looked Lin straight in the eye, eyebrow still arched. "Yī, nǐ dàile yīgè nǚrén yuēhuì dào wǒmen de cāntīng, zhè shì cónglái méiyǒu fāshēngguò. Érqiě, zìcóng líkāi zhōngguó zhīhòu, wǒ hái méiyǒu gǎnshòu dào rúcǐ jùdà de lìliàng."(One, You brought a woman on a date to our restaurant, which has never happened before. And two, I haven't felt such tremendous power since leaving china.) Lin just rolled his eyes and sighed deeply.. 'Why oh why did he have to have such a nosy little sister...' He glared momentarily at her but the shook his head and smirked.. "Tā shì SPR de tóngshì, shì de, wǒ xǐhuān tā, dàn wǒmen bùzài yīqǐ. Suǒyǐ bùyào qù dǎ diànhuà gěi wǒmen de mǔqīn. Wǒ nìngyuàn zài zhèngquè de shíjiān dǎ diànhuà jǐ zìjǐ."(She is a colleague of mine at SPR, and yes I do like her but we're not together. So don't go calling our mother about this. I'd rather do that phone call myself at the right time.) She just laughed and nodded.. She turned to Mai and bowed deeply. "I'm sorry for being disrespectful, I just needed to give my brother some sisterly advice." With that she turned and left for the kitchen.. Lin just sighed deeply and shook his head in resign.. 'I just know I'll get a phone call from mother soon.' "I'm so sorry about that.. My sister is.. To say the least, extremely nosy and curious about you.." Mai just blinked confusingly, blush still going strong. "Aaah.. I see.." She looked down at the food and was marvelled at the beautiful dish, as was her stomach as it gave off a loud growl. "Ehh-hehe-heee..." She nervously laughed while Lin chuckled.. "Hungry much Mai-chan?" Mai could hear his teasing in the honorifics and couldn't help but giggle at it.. "Maybe just a little.. Itadakimasu!" She took up her chopsticks and took a bite of her food and couldn't help but give of a small sigh of content. "It's soooo good Lin-kun. Wh-what is it?" He smiled as he took a bite himself. "It's called níngméng yā. More or less lemon duck. It was one of my favorite childhood foods. This specific dish is a family recipe that Yanyu brought with her.." They sat and ate while smalltalking. Mai couldn't help but steal sneaking glances off Lin still mezmerised by his eyes.. "Y-your eyes Lin-kun.. If you don't mind me asking.. W-why do you have one grey and one blue eye?" Lin smiled lightly and gazed at Mai with both eyes. "I was born with my different eyes. Exactly why I don't know, it's not hereditary so it's not from my parents or ancestors. When I turned 4 and my Onmyoji-training started in full I started to notice that my eyes or rather my one eye was different. I had trouble using both my eyes at the same time, got sharp pains in my head and was always tired in my one eye. We quickly noticed that my right eye could actually had electromagnetic vision. I can see lights humans normally can't see. Still to this day I can't use both eyes at the same time without getting headaches.." He let his hair cover his right eye again, still watching Mais' reaction which was pretty much the picture perfect replica of a fish on dry land. "I.. See.. That's very different.. Never heard of anything like that.." Her hand slowly encased his, stroking her thumb on his palm.. Lin just smiled and let out a light sigh. "Yeah, neither had we. But it has been helpful many times.." He gazed at the young woman in front of him and marvelled. 'I sure has found a gem here' His other hand slowly stroked her cheek while he slowly leaned forward. Mais' eyes flickered between Lins' eye and lips slowly following his move, blush ever so bright on her cheeks. Just as they were close enough that Lin could feel her breath on his lips his cellphone started ringing. "Tā mā de!(Fuck!)" Lin swore out and slowly put his forehead against Mais' and then slowly leaned back and pulled out his cellphone. "Yes?" He answered slightly annoyed. "What? When and where?" He slowly massaged the bridge of his nose.. 'Must be bad news' Mai thought as she saw the many emotions flicker over his stoic face. "We'll be there soon. Bye." He snapped his phone shut and sighed deeply and tiredly.. "That bad?" Mai asked unsure if she really wanted to know the answer.. Lin gave a small smile and waved over his sister. "They need us back there. Something's up. Our contractor has mysteriously disappeared.." Yanyu arrived at the table and smiled at the two.. "Time to go already Xingxu?" Lin smiled apologeticly. "Yeah. Work called so we need to go. How much do I owe you?" Yanyu laughed and sisterly punched his arm. "Xìngxu qǐng. Nǐ bù qiàn rènhé dōngxī, wǒ hěn gāoxìng kàn dào nǐ zhème fàngsōng. Huí dào zhèlǐ, hé nǐ nàgè piàoliang de nǚ péngyǒu yīqǐ qù kàn kàn ba. (Xingxu please. You don't owe anything, I'm just happy to see you this pleased. Just come back here and visit with that pretty girlfriend of yours.)" Lins' eye widened. "Nǐ quèdìng Yanyu?" Yanyu just smiled serenly and nodded. "Wǒ gǎn kěndìng dàgē. Xiànzài qù bǎohù tā. (I'm sure big brother. Now go and protect her.)" Lin just shook his head while laughing.. "Thank you Yanyu, I will." He stood and hugged his little sister tightly. Mai stood up and was about bow when Yanyu hugged her tightly too. "Be careful and take care of eachother" she whispered in Mais' ear. Mai reciprocated the hug and nodded, when the hug ended she grabbed Lins' hand. "Let's go Lin-kun!" She said cheerfully.

The ride back to the mansion was done in content silence. Both were contemplating their dinner together.. Mai sat gazing out the windows. 'I wonder if this was a date..' She sneakily tried to steal a glance of Lins' face but he caught her and met her gaze for a split second before Mai quickly turned her head to look out the window, face bright red.. 'Sure I know we've had tea and occasionally lunch before.. But this felt different..' She sat wondering and secretly hoping it was.. They arrived shortly after, got out of the car and started walking towards the front door hand-in-hand. Mai was in her own little world, not really paying attention to her surroundings. She didn't notice Lin stop until she felt him tug her back towards him lightly. Mai wasn't ready for it so her feet stumbled over themselves as she turned towards Lin. He caught her before she really fell and gazed deeply in to her eyes with both his eyes. Mai was mezmerised at his action and eyes, confusion and suspense written all over her face. "L-Lin-kun wha-" Lin stopped her midsentance with lightly molding his lips against hers, right hand snaking into her hand and neck deepening the kiss. Mais' eyes were wide with shock but instantly closed in happiness and pleasure letting him slowly deepen the kiss. He slowly ended the kiss putting his forehead against hers again smiling contently. Mais' blush had stretched far beyond her face and down her neck and chest, her breathing coming out a little elevated. "I've been wanting to do that for some time now... I.."He stopped instantly, face shot up, back rigid and stance very defensive.. Mai noticed instantly something was very wrong as she saw Lins' Shiki floating aggresively around them and heard them hiss threatening. "L-Lin-kun.. Wh-what is going on?" Just as se asked she felt it.. The hatred.. The envy.. The jealousy.. The darkness.. She looked up at Lins' face that was glaring angrily in front of him. She slowly turned around and saw the origin of hostility. By the front door was a big black entity with glowing hateful eyes.. "Get behind me Mai. Now." She did as told just as the entity started moving towards them. Lin whistled a hauntingly shrill, angry note and the Shiki instantly attacked the entity. Said entity stopped in it's tracks clearly not liking the shiki nor seemed to expect them.. The entity gave of a angry growly howl and turned back going full speed to the mansion making the doors slam open, unhinging one of them. A growly dark voice was heard "This is NOT over!"

I am not a native chinese speaker or writer, all the chinese are from google translate so if they are incorrect or mean something else, I am soo sorry.
For you who wonders what exactly I've based the shiki off. I have molded them in the essence of the Wu Xing or also known as the five elements.
I have given each a distinct animal personality.

Soo the plot thickens..
Everything is so much bigger than originally thought.
Mai can actually see Lin's Shiki now.
Mai and Lin's relationship deepens a little more. FINALLY THEIR FIRST KISS! 3
And who would've thought Mai would be the daughter of a infamous chinese priestess.

What will happen?

Please give a review and some love!
I'll try to have a new chapter soon-ish^^"
Until next time
