"This award is presented to Corporal Diane Noble for risking her own life to save that of a young girl in a combat zone. Just after they had arrived to cover, the town was blown apart from enemy fire."

Diane read the little blurb on the box encasing the cross that she had been given by the army, so many years ago.

It had been given to someone who was a hero, well who the army thought was a hero. To Diane it was part of her duty. She had shirked the idea of being given an award for what she called 'her job description', yet give it to her they did. She remembered the day of the ceremony: blue skies, not a single cloud. She had not been the only one to get an award that day, but she was the only female. Her dad was there; so proud of her, he was.

It was an autumn day, not too warm. So when standing at attention whilst everyone else was called, she wasn't too hot. Finally, at the end of the ceremony, she had her name called. As she marched up the loudspeaker told everyone what she had done to be awarded this badge, she could feel herself blushing.

Afterwards there was the afternoon tea and her dad hadn't stopped smiling.

Diane looked up from the reminiscing as Nikki walked into the room.

"How's the packing going Diane? What's that?" Nikki asked.

"Oh, nothing." Diane tried to put the box away, but Nikki quickly made her way over and picked up the box.

"You have an award for bravery, but no one knows? You're a hero, Diane."

"I don't want to big note myself."

"More like you don't see yourself as a hero."

"There could be some truth in that statement."

"Hmph, don't I know it."
