Birthdays- Part 1

-In which we celebrate 2 birthdays! And get to catch up with everyone!

It was a crisp autumn day, the days were still slightly warm but there was the knowledge that winter would soon be upon them. It was Kasami's 1st birthday today and Aang and Katara had invited their close friends to come and celebrate this event. They would also be celebrating Azayla's 1st birthday which was about a month ago. It was rare for everyone to be gathered at the same place at the same time so they agreed it would be easier to hold one event then for everyone to have to travel that far for two.

Zuko, Mai and Azayla had arrived yesterday. Zuko had not allowed Mai to help set up for the party because she was pregnant, Zuko and Mai were really excited to have another child- even if Mai didn't show it in front of everyone. She sat down and watched Azayla and Kasami so Katara could help, or she entertained Tenzin, Gyatso and Kya by telling them exciting stories she had heard or lived.

Sokka, Suki, Sen and Rei were due to arrive today- as were Hakoda, Kana, Pakku, Iroh, Toph and The Duke.

Katara had a suspicion that Sokka and Suki wanted to have another child- but she kept her thoughts to herself, well…to herself and Aang at least, but she knew Aang would never mention it in front of anyone but her.

Katara was especially excited to see her Gran-Gran. Unfortunately she had not been able to visit her grandmother since her last expedition to the South Pole so she had not yet seen Tenzin, Gyatso or Kasami in person. She had seen paintings of them though when Sokka had visited her though. Pakku was sure that Kasami was going to be a Waterbender but Aang and Katara knew it was too soon to tell if she was a bender at all! Let alone what element she would be able to manipulate.

Their first indication that Sokka and Suki's family had arrived was a scream from the back of Appa. It was almost impossible to reach the Air Temple without aid of a bison so they would get as close as they could then Appa would carry them the rest of the way

"Kya!" screamed Rei as she spied her friend carrying a chair to the garden

"Rei!" screamed Kya back. The chair lay forgotten as she ran to where she knew Appa would land

Aang, Katara, Tenzin and Gyatso all walked to where Appa was landing whilst Zuko walked to help his wife. She got a bit annoyed at Zuko insisting that she was "fine" but Zuko helped her up anyway. They walked hand in hand slowly because Azayla couldn't walk very quickly yet but she didn't want to be carried

"She reminds me so much of you" said Zuko after Azayla had refused his offer to pick her up

Mai smiled faintly in response and they continued making their way over to greet Suki and Sokka's family only stopping to help Azayla up when she lost her balance and fell down to the fortunately soft grass.

"Hello everyone!" said Suki when Appa had landed.

Sokka jumped off first then proceeded to help his daughter, wife and son off the giant flying bison.

Just as Rei's feet had made contact with the grass she ran and hugged her best friend. Aang chuckled as he watched them walk off talking about things that had happened since they had last seen each other.

"You couldn't tear them apart even if you wanted too" he said to the group at large as Mai, Zuko and Azayla joined them

"Hi Mai! How are you?" asked Suki enthusiastically

"I'm fine, and you?" she replied politely

"I'm great! I hear your going to have another baby soon!" she gushed

"Yes, in about 4 months" she said

"Aww! Congratulations!" she said as she went over to greet Zuko and Azayla

Suddenly Appa flew off again- probably to pick up more guests

"Hi Sen!" Tenzin and Gyatso cried in unison as they saw the boy they idolised

"Hey, How are you?" he asked and they fell into a conversation about warrior moves

"Hey sis" said Sokka hugging his sister

"Hey big brother, I think Dad, Gran-gran and Pakku will arriving soon" she said referring to when she had seen Appa fly off to pick up some guests

"That's great!" he replied enthusiastically as he thumped Aang on the back

"Who else is coming?" asked Suki coming back from greeting Zuko and Azayla

"Apart from Dad, Gran-gran and Pakku- Iroh, Toph and The Duke" she replied counting on her fingers as she spoke

….

Appa arrived back a few minutes later with more guests in his saddle, when he landed it became clear that it was Hakoda, Kana and Pakku.

"Dad!" Katara and Sokka shouted as he climbed off Appa and received hugs from his children

Pakku helped Kana off the Bison where she was greeted with a large hug from Sokka and Katara as well. They greeted Master Pakku in much the same way.

"How have you been Gran-gran? It's been such an awfully long time since I've seen you" said Katara as she gave her Grandmother another hug

"I've been well, but I want to see my great-grandchildren!" she replied with a smile

Aang went to go find Rei and Kya while Sokka went to get Sen, Tenzin and Gyatso

"Hello Kya, do you remember me?" Kana asked, lowering herself so she was eye-level with her great-grand daughter

"Yes! Hello Great Gran-Gran!" She said as she embraced her

"You're not the shy one I remember" she said as she turned to Rei

"Hello Rei, How are you?"

"Good" she said, her voice muffled from the hug she was receiving

"My Sen, you've grown a lot since I last saw you!" she said

"Of course! I'm 7" he said proudly before getting drawn into a hug like his sister

Kana then turned to Tenzin and Gyatso

"Hello, what are your names?" she asked, she knew what the twins names were but she enjoyed playing along with the idea that they had never met

"I'm Tenzin" said Tenzin quietly

"I'm Gyatso" said Gyatso shyly

Kana laughed as she remembered all the first times she had met her great-grand children them were all shy around them

"Hello, it's nice to meet both of you, I'm your Great Gran-gran" she used the name that Kya had referred to her as when they had first met

She gave them both a large hug and turned to Katara while they were being greeted by Pakku and Hakoda

"Where is the little one?" Kana asked referring to Kasami

"She is having her nap right n-" her sentence was cut off by a cry coming from the temple

Katara rolled her eyes

"She's awake" she said laughing as she led Kana inside to meet her.

….

She picked up her crying daughter and spoke to her to sooth her. Once Kasami realised she was no longer alone she stopped crying.

"She has your eyes" spoke Kana softly

"This is your Great Gran-gran" said Katara to Kasami

"Gan gan!"Squealed Kasami happily as Kana and Katara laughed.

…

When Katara, Kana and Kasami returned to the garden they saw that Iroh had arrived

"Hello Iroh" said Katara politely and introduced him to Kana

Iroh seemed very happy at the prospect of having another great niece or nephew. He adored Azayla and often offered to baby-sit when Zuko and Mai had important meeting to attend. Zuko and Mai much preferred having Iroh take care of their daughter instead of leaving her with the royal babysitter- a complete stranger as they had never met them and never intended too.

"Hello! And how is little Kasami?" he asked softly tickling her stomach

"She is very well Thank you"

"Happy birthday little one! I hope you are blessed with many, many more"

Aang smiled at this exchange then lifted his head to see Appa soar in one last time
