Weddings
- in which we look over old memories and look forward to new ones.
I do not own Avatar: The Last Airbender or Legend of Korra, but I do own this new iPad that I'm typing this out on! (my new laptop from the previous chapter broke the day after I got it -.-)
This chapter is dedicated to heavenxxbaby for being my 50th reviewer! I asked if she would like a gift chapter but she wanted me to write whatever I had planned so, here we go!
...
Aang was not the first to wake up in the morning for a change. When he walked into Suki's kitchen he saw her standing over a pot of something that smelled amazing.
"Good morning" he said to the early riser, feeling embarrassed that she was going to the trouble to cook for his family as well as her own
"Morning!" she replied with a smile, seeming happier than usual.
Before Aang could even begin to ponder the reason for her happiness and energy his wife entered the kitchen.
"Hey sweetie" he said, walking over and hugging her after she finished a large yawn.
"Hey Aang, hey Suki"
The Kyoshi warrior replied with an even greater smile, causing to Katara to look at her with a questioning look. Katara looked deep in though for a few moments, then her eyes opened wider than usual. She silently asked her again, and Suki replied with a small nod.
"Eeek!" Squealed Katara, causing Aang to jump, he had just gotten use to the elongated silence.
"What happened?" he asked as the two women hugged each other.
"Nothing you need to worry about at the moment" said Katara slyly, shooting Suki a sideways glance.
Aang chalked it up to women being strange as he slowly excused himself from the kitchen, clutching an apple he had picked up for breakfast.
...
Aang sat outside with Sokka, enjoying the refreshing sea breeze and watching their children playing together happily. He enquired about their wives' behavior and Sokka confessed he and Suki were going to try for another baby.
In hindsight, their situation was funny. Suki wanted another child but thought Sokka didn't, and it turned out that Sokka also wanted another child but didn't know how his wife was going to take it if he asked.
After his confession, the two sat in silence, thinking. Sen, Gyatso and Tenzin had given up training for this morning and were now playing a game of chase. It would seem that Sen had the advantage, being older, stronger and having longer legs, but the twins were rather hard to catch once they started using their Airbending.
Once they strayed into the patch of flowers that Kya and Rei were making jewelry out of, but the girls made sure that didn't happen again.
The flowers absently reminded Aang of the Pandalilys he and Sokka had scaled a volcano for. He made a mental note that if he were ever near there again he would get Katara some Pandalilys to make up for not retrieving them last time.
As soon as he made this mental note, everyone outside was called to the house for lunch. He became painfully aware of his growling stomach, his apple felt like it was eaten an eternity ago.
It didn't take long to persuade the children to go inside; the smell that was now wafting from the open windows was hard for anyone to resist.
The lunch that Katara and Suki had prepared tasted even better than it smelled. Sokka piled his plate like usual and everyone ate more than they usually would.
"Were we expecting mail?" Asked Suki to her husband as he finished his fourth or fifth helping; it seemed even Sokka couldn't keep track of how much he ate.
"I don't know, maybe it's it's just a letter from a friend" suggested Sokka, speaking with a mouth full of food and gesturing with his fork to the messenger hawk that could be seen coming toward their house.
"You're probably right" shrugged Suki, returning to her meal.
"I can't believe you just said that" muttered Katara, but only Aang heard her. Katara would never admit that Sokka was right unless the circumstances were dire.
It didn't take long for the hawk to fly through an open window. Sokka sat whispering about something that sounded suspiciously like "Hawky" as Suki proceeded to open the fancy envelope.
"Oh my" Suki's eyes widened in shock as she took in the contents of the envelope. Sokka jumped up and started reading it over her shoulder. Aang and Katara knew something major had happened when they saw Sokka stop eating and staring at the letter, mouth agape.
"Umm" Started Katara, not wanting to invade their privacy "is anything the matter?"
"You guys should probably read this too. You'll have a similar one at your house anyway" Suki handed them the letter that was inside the envelope, Sokka still hadn't moved from his shocked position.
Katara curiously scanned the first few lines, her eyes opening in shock too. The children were impatient to know what could have surprised all the adults present, Kya spoke up first.
"What's the letter about Mummy?"
Her daughters words seemed to snap Katara out of her stupor, she turned to Kya and explained.
"Well dear, it seems as though your Aunty Toph is getting married"
"That's great news! Isn't it?" She asked uncertainly, peering at her and her friends parents.
"Of course it is honey, it was just...unexpected" she finished with a smile.
"Poor Duke" said Suki sympathetically which caused her husband to raise an eyebrow
"Hey, Duke would have known what he was getting himself into when he proposed" argued Sokka, The Dukes full title all but forgotten.
"I'm not talking about the marriage!" Exclaimed Suki, hitting her husband, I'm talking about the wedding!"
"Huh?"
"Duke is going to be so busy planning it all" Suki said, Katara nodding in agreement
"No way, it's like, a gene in women to want to plan their weddings" retorted Sokka, earning him another hit
"Do you really think Toph is going to be fussing about centre pieces and flowers?" Asked Katara, rendering Sokka speechless
"Knowing Toph she'll probably insist on a mud cake...made of real mud" laughed Aang
"I like mud cakes!" Interjected Tenzin
"Me too!" Added Gyatso, finishing his meal.
"I love weddings" smiled Katara, "remember ours sweetie?"
Aang nodded, memories of his wedding flooded his mind, causing a smile to appear on his face too.
It had been a modest ceremony, friends and family were invited and Katara had underestimated the amount of friends they had made on their journeys. Aang would never forget how beautiful Katara looked as she walked down the aisle, dressed in traditional Water Tribe wedding garb. Aang had never been to an Air Nomad wedding; the majority of them choosing not to get married, but he dressed in specially made Air Bender clothing.
Hakoda told his daughter that she looked beautiful, and that her mother would have been crying tears of happiness like crazy if she were here. This made Katara cry, but she had already been crying from happiness that day. Aang had been happy too, so happy he thought he might explode. He never thought he could have experienced anything better until his children were born.
His euphoria only continued to rise as he said "I do" and heard his wife do the same. They kissed as the crowd applauded and knew that their lives would be perfect because they had each other.
Sokka and Suki's wedding had been similar. Sokka proposed to Suki and they had their ceremony on Kyoshi island. Katara didn't have a clue as to why Suki agreed to marry her brother but she helped to prepare none the less. Aang gave Sokka a specially made boomerang to replace his old one as a wedding gift and promised they would make a space sword if another meteorite fell.
"I'm going to get married to a handsome prince and then I'll be a pretty princess!" Declared Kya, snapping Aang from his thoughts
"The only prince you know is Zayu" Her mother teased lightly, causing Rei to giggle
"Why didn't you marry a prince?" Asked Kya innocently, causing Aang to make an indignant sound
"Because your father is much more handsome than Zuko" she replied, sticking her tongue out and causing the adults to laugh.
Although Kya didn't fully understand the joke she giggle anyway.
"Maybe Kasami will marry Zayu!" She exclaimed, gesturing toward her younger sister
Katara laughed this comment off "Well I suppose you never know"
"Yuck. I am never gonna get married" declared Sen, which caused Tenzin and Gyatso to say "Yuck!" In agreement
"I'm sure you'll change your mind in many years to come, son" said Sokka, his hand on his shoulder.
Sen just continued to shake his head, wondering why anyone would want to kiss an icky girl.
