Chapter 31
Robin
I couldn't stop looking at her, couldn't believe she was sat next to me all wrapped up in a blanket and safe. And I was alive to see her and feel her hand in mine! Nothing short of a miracle.
"I'm very glad neither of us is dead." I said and she chuckled.
"I second that!" Lizzie moved closer to me and rested her head on my shoulders and I couldn't resist pulling her onto my lap and holding her tight.
"You know," She said with a yawn "all that combat training we did definitely paid off – I took down one guard and a hangman all on my own!"
"My favorite part was thinking that the hangman was caressing my neck when it was you all along! I was so confused." I laughed and she added her light laughter to mine.
"I didn't even think about how odd it would seem to you." She said.
"So all the bumps and bruises from training were worth it then? I seen to remember someone complaining an awful lot..." I teased and she punched my arm jokingly,
"Watch it – I could take you any day." She threatened, one eyebrow raised and her lips curved in a smile.
"Oh yeah?" I challenged and then pounced, tickling her mercilessly whilst she squealed and tried to get away.
"Robin! Stop, STOP! Remember all those slaps...remember the pain! Pleeaaassseee stop!" She shouted.
I took pity on her eventually and she scrambled away from me, laughing breathlessly.
"You're evil!" She accused, pouting. I rolled my eyes.
"How are you feeling?" I asked her quietly, she looked down and bit her lip. Suddenly she looked so vulnerable and fragile and so beautiful that it almost hurt, the firelight throwing dancing shadows onto her cheeks.
"Worried." She admitted in a small voice. I reached out a hand and she took it but still didn't look up.
"About Guy?" I asked. She nodded, a single tear trickled down her cheek.
I shuffled over to sit next to her and placed my hand under her chin, tilting her head up tenderly. I looked into her beautiful eyes,
"He'll be alright. And so will we. Everything will work itself out." I told her with as much calm and sincerity as I could muster, it seemed to work as her eyes softened and she leaned into me, resting her head on my shoulder.
"I love you."
I wasn't sure if I'd heard it, it was like a breath on the wind but when she lifted her eyes to mine I was sure.
"I love you too."
