Sam POV
Breath in, breath out. Breath in, breath out. Human were passing by me, acting completely normal. None of them seemed to suspect anything, none of them seemed to be aware of who I was.
I took a tissue out of my pocketand slowly wiped my face. The forehead, slightly crooked nose, cheeks and chin. It was really hot, the temperature surely reached 30 degrees Celsius, if not higher. The sky was cloudless and there was barely no wind. I grimaced, thinking about how hard it would be to transfer Iggy to the Underworld. I needed at least a breeze if I wanted to pass the Styks river. If not I would have to go through the Prophecy and that would make my mission incredibly difficult. I looked up at the sky and cursed the Angels' king- the one who was responsible for the weather.
Then I slowly shuffled to the place Iggy worked at. "Splash me milkshake!" neon sign was visible within a mile. It was impossible to pass by not interested in the colorful cupcake shape of the building. And the sound of children laughter was loud enough to wake up the dead. I shook my head and slowly shuffled toward the place. Each step was making me more and more nervous. Once again I wiped my face and began to breath deeper and louder. I was blinking fast and using all my self-control not to turn around and run away. You may ask, why was I so nervous? What was I actually afraid of?
a) children?
no
b)giant cupcake?
no
c)dancing Marcella?
no
I was truly awe-stricken by the demons' King. His power, ruthlessness and cruelty. His ability to turn me into nonexistent in less than a second. He intimidated everyone in the world. Even the angels' King had always treated him with massive respect, regardless of his hatred toward evil and injustice. So yes, I had thousands of reasons to be shaking my legs at the moment. I was doing something the Eviliest gave me no permission on. I was about to bring a living soul into the Underground!
I knew that I was the one who premeditated this mission. I still agreed that it was indeed brilliant idea. But I wasn't the one to tell if everything would go just the way I planned. Because even one, small failure would provoke a big catastrophe. I had to make sure everything would go as perfect as possible. There was no space for mistakes.
I entered the "Splash me milkshake!" not enjoying the loud crowd surrounding me. Trudging through the people I tried to ignore their tasteful smell. To think that all I needed to satisfy my wild desire was to reach out and grab a nice, smooth neck to suck the soul out... I shook my head. I had to concentrate on the mission. I looked around, my eyes skipping through faces, not being able to spot the one interesting me. And then someone's familiar laughter caught my ear. My head snapped to the direction of the sound and my eyes finally saw the most ungirly girl ever-Max. She was wearing black checkered shirt, carelessly slipped into white, ripped skinny jeans. Her long dirty blond hair were tied into a high messy ponytail. She was talking with a mocha skin girl dressed in a red, gaudy dress. She seemed to be Maximum's contradistinction, looking feminine and illecebrous. In between them sat a guy with a strangely familiar face. I observed him for a while, trying to remember, but my memory didn't seem to cooperate. Trying to ignore my growing irritation I focused back on searching for my main target. And there he was. Chatting with no one else than the mysterious guy. He stood behind the counter, leaning against it casually. He didn't seem to care about the obvious queue, letting the other workers do all the job. I approached them and sat at the bar, couple of places away. I ordered myself a banana milkshake and cautiously kept on shooting short glances in Iggy's direction. I had to wait till he was alone. Somehow pursue him to accept my proposal... Being lost in thought, I took a sip of the cold drink and suddenly choked. A big banana piece stuck in my throat, making it impossible for me to breath. I panicked and I stood up with my eyes wide open. I started to wave my hands and point at my mouth. People around me moved away not sure how to act or in order to give me more space. That's when Iggy saw me and as the waiter offered me help. He took me to the staff room and helped me to expectorate the banana. I thanked him and just when he was about to leave I caught his arm. We were alone, with no witnesses. I had to use the opportunity. I couldn't let him leave.
Max POV
"Oh my Gawsh! Max, Max look!" Nudge screamed suddenly, her eyes widening with shock "This boy is choking! ZOMG! We have to help him! But I don't know what to do!" she continued on babbling as she threw her hands in the air and covered her mouth "Max, what am I suppose to do? He is about to die! I don't want to watch anyone dying! Please, someone, anyone. Help him!" Nudge panicked as the boy sitting at the table across us started to cough. I rolled my eyes at her overreaction, ready to stand up, when Dylan caught my arm. I shot him an angry look, but he didn't let go. I gritted my teeth and was just about to hit his arm, when Iggy stood up.
"Sit Max. I'll help him." he said. I shot him an angry look but he sighed " I'm an employer here after all. And I can use the staff room" he added and not waiting for my reply went away. I sat back down and watched him doing the hero job. I clenched my fist, angry at Dylan for being so... I don't know. Overprotective? Annoying?
In the morning when he came to me, I was really surprised. He introduced himself as the owner of my heart and my Guardian Angel. Ok. I must admit at first I didn't know how to react. I mean, it's not like you meet your savior everyday, right? He told me about the hunts on my soul, which were the reasons of my heart attacks. He explained how important it was for him to keep me safe. And not only for my sake. He told me that his father, the angel's Lord, sensed a big catastrophe. Something that would change the world. I wasn't really sure why and how they connected this fact with me, but Dylan was sure the coincidence of my birthday and that event happening on the same day was too big.
I shot Dylan a glance and saw that he was observing the choking guy carefully. He narrowed his eyebrows as if he suspected something.
" Everything OK?" I asked him, concerned and placed my hand on his shoulder. Being offended at him was completely forgotten.
"There's something weird about this guy. I- I can sense sulfur on him. " he muttered, not really concentrated on me. All of his senses were focused on the mysterious guy.
"What does that mean? " I asked, frowning. My heart started to race as bad thoughts crossed my mind. Dylan didn't answer me at first, but after a while his eyes widened.
"Sam" he whispered slowly. Suddenly he stood up and raced toward the staff room. Hassled, I stood up and quickly followed him. Nudge being the only one uninitiated in the situation watched us with amusement. She was probably thinking we were about to help Iggy. So as soon as we left, she stood up and mounted to some 'hot hunks'. I didn't focus on her, being truly ferdutzt by the whole situation.
"Fuck!" I heard Dylan's furious yell. Snapping out of my shock, I ran and found him sitting on the floor gripping his hair angrily. "He got him, Max. He took your brother!"
I frowned, my scariest expectation coming true. I really didn't want to understand what he meant. But I was afraid I knew exactly what he was talking about. Lying to myself, I repeated in my head that I had to ask him again about what he said. But then a short redhead girl entered the room. Seeing us, she got angry and immediately kicked us out from the milkshake bar, yelling about her getting in trouble because of us. Remembering that Nudge had been sitting with me and Dylan before, told her to leave as well. Nudge insisted that she didn't know us, but the red head didn't listen.
" I have no idea what you guys have done, but because of you I didn't get Eric's number! How will I contact him now? I mean seriously-"
"Fuck, Nudge! Will you shut up!" Dylan shouted, jerky cutting her off. Nudge's eyes widened at his sudden outburst and so did mine. I have to admit that I was pretty shocked. He always used to be calm and nice, never showing any negative emotions. Well, it's not that I knew him long enough. But since he was an Angel I never expected anything else from him.
"Dyl..." I started, wanting to soothe him but he cut me off
" Max, we have to get back home immediately." he claimed and not even looking at me turned around, ready to walk away.
"Wait! Will you at least tell me what's going on?" I asked, when I caught his arm. He looked straight into my eyes and with difficulty controlling his voice finally said the words I was so afraid to hear
"Demons have got Iggy. You'll have to go to hell and save him, Maximum"
