They had already finished eating and were now just finishing watching the episode of SVU that they were watching. Gabriella wanted Troy to talk about what happened but she didn't want to force him to talk.
"I had no idea."
Gabriella looked over at Troy who was still looking at the TV like he hadn't said anything, "I'm sorry?"
"I had no idea she was cheating on me."
Gabriella just sat there waiting for him to continue.
"I had been staying at school late hours because I had finals that week. But I decided to surprise her by coming home early cause I knew how upset she was that I had been spending most of my time at the library. When I got home they were in the living room. On the couch. I just stopped, turned around and left. I went to my grandma's house and just sat there. She called me about a hundred times and when I answered all I said was that I wanted the ring back. That's all I wanted from her. I spent a lot of money on that ring and it helped me pay off some of my school loans. I didn't want the apartment or any of stuff in it. I only went back once and that was to get all my clothes."
He looked down at where Gabriella's hand was and grabbed it in his. "I have been very careful with my heart ever since. I thought she was the one I was going to spend the rest of my life with. Not because I wanted to but because that was what seemed like the right thing to do. I mean I didn't realize that until after we ended it. I think I knew all along that she wasn't really the one, because I wouldn't give her my grandma's engagement ring."
Gabriella started making little designs on his palm, but still didn't say anything.
Troy looked up and looked at her face, which was looking down at his hand. "When I saw you sitting on the ground talking to Lilly, I had a weird feeling about you."
Gabriella's head shot up, "Oh gee thanks!"
Troy just laughed, "It wasn't a bad weird feeling. It was just I could tell that something was different with you. And I was right when you didn't swoon over me like every other female that I have ever encountered."
Gabriella looked away for a second, "I have a little secret to tell."
Troy raised his eye brows, "Oh and what is that little secret?"
Gabriella hesitated for a second, "well one time you were changing in the locker room down in the ER and I had to get something from my locker, and… um… when I opened the… um door you were..."
Troy smirked a little, "I was what?"
"I might have seen…"
"Seen what?"
Gabriella looked at him, "You're enjoying this."
Troy laughed, "I mean yeah, your blushing about telling me that you saw either my ass or…"
"Your penis."
"Exactly, both of which," he said leaning over her causing her to lean back on the couch, "you have seen plenty," he gave her a kiss, "of times." He smiled even bigger and kissed her again.
Gabriella moaned into his mouth and ran her hands through his hair. Troy put all of his weight on her and ran his hands up her side before bringing his right hand back down between her and the back of the couch and ran it along her thigh. Gabriella brought her right arm down and gripped the back of his shirt has their tongues did a familiar dance between their mouths. Troy's right hand went around and squeezed her ass. Gabriella moaned again and raised her hips into his.
"Mmm baby," Troy moaned against her lips. He brought his hands up and under her shirt, taking it off. He placed his right hand back on her ass and brought his left hand up and squeezed her left breast. Gabriella pulled his shirt over his head and dragged her nails softly down his stomach.
"Gabriella you're killing me," just as he was about to unsnap her bra, his phone rang.
"You have got to be fucking me," Gabriella said throwing her head back.
Troy leaned down and kissed her quickly, "Give me one second."
Troy got up and went over to grab his phone, "Hey Derek wha… woah Jess slow down what's wrong?... what?... where are you?... okay, I'll be there as soon as I can." He hung up and went into the bedroom.
Gabriella got and followed him, "What's going on?"
Troy was running around trying to change, "That was Derek's wife, Jess, Derek was in a car accident."
Gabriella's jaw dropped, "Oh my god Troy, is he alright?"
Troy just shook his head, "I don't know. She said he was in surgery. I need to get there."
Gabriella went over and put her hands on his arms, "Troy slow down. Get dressed, I'll put my shirt back on and I'll drive you anywhere you need to go. Okay?"
Troy just nodded and took a deep breath. They got dressed and Gabriella drove them to Mass General. When they got there Gabriella was able to find a spot that was actually near the ER. When they walked Troy was basically running around looking for Jess, while Gabriella walked up to Nancy.
"Miss Gabriella, what are you doing here? I thought you were off." Nancy said while putting a file away.
"I am. Me and Troy are looking for a Derek Johnson," Gabriella said while looking to see if she could find Troy.
"The young man that was brought in from the car accident earlier?" Nancy asked with a face like she was hoping that Gabriella would say no.
Gabriella looked back at her, "Yeah. He is Troy's best friend."
"Oh good Lord. He is in surgery right now."
Gabriella nodded her head, "Thank you." She went to walk away when Nancy grabbed her arm.
"It doesn't look good."
Gabriella looked at her again and took a deep sigh before nodding her head again. "Thanks Nance."
She walked over to Troy who was sitting next to a dark haired woman who was crying. She sat down next to him and just rubbed his back so that he knew she was there.
"I am so sorry Jess. How long did they say he would be in surgery?" Troy asked after glancing at Gabriella so that she knew he wasn't ignoring her.
The woman just shook her head, "They didn't say."
Troy just nodded and looked at Gabriella, "What did Nance say?"
Gabriella just shook her head. Troy knew what that meant and just closed his eyes and leaned back in his seat. Gabriella put her hand on his leg and just rubbed his thigh.
They had been sitting there for a while. Gabriella didn't even know what time they arrived at the hospital. All of a sudden Troy got up and walked away. Gabriella looked at Jess who looked scarred.
"It's alright, I'll go after him." Gabriella said has she put her hand on Jess' arm for a second before going to find Troy. She knew where he went and decided to take her time so that Troy could have some time by himself. She walked around the ER for a little bit before she went to the on-call room. When she walked in she went straight to the back row of beds and found the man she was looking for. She laid down next to him, like he had done for her, and didn't say a word.
They stared at the bottom mattress without speaking for only a few minutes before Troy spoke, "Last time we were here the roles were reversed."
Gabriella smiled slightly remembering how Troy had helped her through losing Hannah. "I know."
They once again laid there with no words before Troy turned his head to look at her in the dark, "What if I lose him?"
Gabriella could hear his voice breaking and turned her head to look back at him, "You won't."
"You said Nancy said it was bad."
"I did but she didn't say that there wasn't a chance." She scooted closer to him and grabbed his hand, "Troy there is a reason why we are the best hospital in the world and people come from all over just to get surgeries, live saving surgeries, here."
Troy took a deep breath, "I know but this is my best friend. This isn't someone I don't know. This is Derek, he is like my brother."
Troy started to cry, and Gabriella was actually glad. It was making her nervous that he had yet to cry after hearing that his best friend was involved a serious car accident and was in surgery to save his life. Gabriella moved closer and tried to hug him but there wasn't much room for her to move.
"Will you just lay here with me?"
The same question she had asked him when she lost Hannah. She knew the only answer she would give was the same one he had given her, "Of course."
They continued to lay there until the door opened. The person didn't say anything they just sat down on the same bed that their heads were under. The person sat there for a few minutes before speaking.
"I have an update."
It was Nancy.
"I know that I am not suppose to do this. And that only family should know, and to answer your question his wife was just told, and she is looking for you Troy. But I told her that I would tell you guys and that she should just sit and focus on keeping him her thoughts."
Neither of them said anything, and neither of them had taken a breath since she started talking.
"First I am going to tell you what is wife knows and then I am going to tell you what I shouldn't tell you. He is going to be in surgery for at least four hours, maybe more. He is going to be in a coma when he is out of surgery as a precautionary measure. He broke his neck and back along with his legs and both arms. Now the part that she doesn't know; he broke his C4-6, T5-8, and L1-3. The chances of him walking ever again are almost zero."
Nancy sat there for a moment waiting to see if either one of them was going to respond, when she realized that they weren't she spoke again, "The doctor also said that there was a 60% that he does not wake up, 40% that he doesn't even make it through the surgery. I am so sorry Troy."
With that she got up and walked out the room, once again leaving the two of them alone. A few minutes later, Troy moved from under the bed quickly and Gabriella followed him, "Where are you going?"
Troy looked at her with tears running down his face and shook his head, "I don't know."
Gabriella's heart broke along with his. She walked up to him and he crumbled into her touch. They fell onto the bed and just held each other. Troy wept into Gabriella's shoulder until he fell asleep. Gabriella stayed awake and watched him sleep until the door opened again. Gabriella looked over to see Nancy looking at her.
"He is out of surgery."
With that she walked away and Gabriella shook Troy awake. "Troy, baby, Derek is out of surgery."
Troy shot up and looked at her, "Really?"
Gabriella nodded, "Nancy just came in."
Troy got up and grabbed Gabriella's hand and pulled her to the waiting room, where Derek's family, his family, and Jess' family stood.
The doctor let everyone know what Nancy had already told Troy and Gabriella. The families stood together and went in two at a time until it was Troy's turn. Gabriella, who had not left Troy's side the whole time, looked at him, "Are you ready?"
Troy nodded his head, "As long as you go with me?"
Gabriella just smiled at him, "I would be honored."
They went into Derek's room where they saw Jess sitting in a chair looking at her husband, crying. They didn't say anything has they sat down on the small couch that was in the room.
"What is his chance of living?"
Neither Gabriella nor Troy were expecting Jess to talk so it took them both a second to respond. Troy spoke first, "Honestly?" Jess nodded her head. "People in his condition usually have a 40% survival rate and this point."
Jess started crying harder, and Gabriella's heart broke even more. She couldn't imagine being in Jess' shoes. She got up and walked over to Jess and wrapped her in a hug. "I know how hard this is. But as long as you don't give up on him, he won't give up."
Jess looked at her, "How do you know how hard this is?" the question was asked in a bitter way but rather a way that was pleading for comfort.
"My sister was in a really bad car accident when she was only sixteen. She was in a coma for two weeks and the doctor's told her that she would never walk again."
"and now?"
Gabriella smiled at her, "and now, she is walking and running and driving me crazy. She is married with one daughter and another due in about two weeks."
Jess smiled at her and gave her another hug, "I know I don't know you but thank you."
Gabriella smiled back at her, "you are more than welcome."
They were in the room for about an hour before Troy's stomach growled. Jess looked at him, "Why don't you two go get some food. I got some when you guys were away so I am fine."
Gabriella nodded her head and grabbed Troy's arm, "Come on, we both need food in our stomachs."
He didn't really put up much of a fight. They sat in the café for a little bit until Troy started to speak, "you didn't tell me your sister got into a car accident."
Gabriella swallowed what was in her mouth, while nodding before speaking, "Yeah, Juliana was driving back from work and a drunk driver hit her. I was seventeen and I remember being so scared that I was going to lose my younger sister. My parents didn't let me drive for like six months, but then realized that it was best if they let me drive myself places."
Troy just looked at her, "That must have been hard. How did you get through it?"
"My best friend Julie was there for me. She helped me talk about it and helped me realize that it was okay to cry. She gave me the strength that I needed seeing my youngster sister laying in a hospital bed. I also remember the doctor telling me that I couldn't give up on her because the moment I gave up her was the moment that her chances of living cut in half."
"My best friend is the one laying in the bed."
Gabriella reached across the table and grabbed his hand, "Than use me. I have been through this and I know what emotions are going through you right now. I am not going to judge an anyway."
"Even if I cry?"
"Especially if you cry. I am never going to tell you to stop crying or judge you for crying, I don't know who said it but they say that crying is a sign that you are alive sense birth."
Troy just looked at her, "I love you."
"I love you too."
Once again so sorry for the long update. I am going through finals and it has been a long couple of weeks. I also wanted to say that I love how much you guys love this story and I love reading your reviews so keep them coming. If at any point you don't like something about the story let me know and I'll try to fix it. And if any of you are confused Derek's wife is NOT Troy's ex, they just have the same name. And it is for a reason lol.
