Dying a Hero's Death

Original Story by 1captain obvious

"Everyone is entitled to sadness, for it is a limitless resource that almost no one wants… yet everyone needs"

It was small at first.

A glance of pink their…

A bout of obnoxious laughter here…

She tried to ignore the signs, tried to move on, like he had told her too.

But she just couldn't!

It only got worse as time wore on, seeing the friends around her move forward with their lives made her miserable.

A year passed in a blur of pain, tears and awful nightmares.

Fairy Tail Guild Cemetery

The clouds seemed to share in her feelings, dark, gray and threatening to burst at the slightest touch.

To say Lucy Heartfillia was in pain was false.

She had moved beyond pain long ago, about a month after Natsu had died if she tried to remember.

Then came despair…

Then anger…

Then denial…

Then hysteria…

Then emptiness…

If you could scoop someone hollow and keep them alive, they might feel half as bad as she did currently.

Sitting on one of the dozens of chairs facing the tomb stone she simply stared, unblinking as Markarov delivered a speech about how proud he was of Natsu and things along that general line.

She was only vaguely aware of the people moving around her, she felt a tap on her shoulder and without even listening she got to her feet and walked over to the tombstone.

The members of Fairy Tail lay a flower or bouquet down at the base of tombstone, each one saying a few words before moving aside.

"I have to thank you Natsu, you are the reason I have become this much stronger. I've become a wizard saint alongside Master though I still think you could probably beat me. I have taken your words to heart. Thank you for all the wisdom you have given me" Erza kissed her flower and lay a single beautiful rose down upon the gravestone before she stepped aside.

Gray approached the grave, Juvia at his side.

"Hey man, if you're up there or whatever… I just wanna say that I miss you, I really do and I hope you're doing alright. I wished you could be here for when I marry Juvia…" Gray breathed deeply, unable to finish his sentence.

Juvia held him close before setting a flawless blue iris down next to the ruby rose.

Lucy's eyes were wide in shock…

"Hey there Lucy, it's been a while" chuckled Natsu as he sat atop the grave stone, casually looking around the graveyard.

Lucy couldn't breathe; it was like her world was folding in on itself.

She turned heel and ran, ran and ran and ran until she could run no longer.

Glancing around; she could she no sign of the salmon haired phantom and sighed in relief.

"I forgot how fast you were"

Natsu had appeared from behind the corner and was grinning at her happily.

Lucy choked in surprise before stumbling away as fast as she could, she was hardly aware of the fact that she was headed towards the chapel.

The grand bells clanged together, informing the town that it was six o'clock.

"Where ya going Luc?" asked Natsu as he plodded along behind the blonde mage as she tried to get away from him.

Lucy crashed through one of the wooden doors, a spiral staircase before her.

Seeing no other option she pulled herself up the granite stairs, higher and higher, the soft sound of Natsu's footsteps drowned out by the loud smacks of Lucy's against the cool stone.

Panic and fear filled the blondes mind as she burst out onto the rooftop, the evening air sending chills down her spine.

"Nice evening don't you think?" asked Natsu as he came up behind her, reaching out to touch her shoulder.

Lucy recoiled in fright; she took step after step away from the dead dragon slayer.

"Watch it Lucy, don't want you to fall" warned Natsu as she was getting dangerously close to the edge of the cathedral.

The celestial mage was soon pinned however, stuck between the approaching spirit and a life ending fall.

Screaming with all her might Lucy threw her pouch of keys at the ghost.

Said ghost simply tilted his head to the side and they sailed past him, hitting the wall behind him.

"What's wrong Lucy? I didn't mean to upset you" said Natsu softly as he took another step towards her.

The wind ripped across the cathedral top, Lucy could barely see anything.

"Stay away" she whispered, almost on the verge of hysteria.

Natsu stopped where he was, simply staring at the broken girl.

"I'll never forgive you…" he whispered darkly.

A chip appeared…

"W… what?" whispered Lucy in confusion.

"You were sloppy that day, why did I have to die for your mistake?" asked Natsu, his eyes cold and unforgiving.

That chip became a crack…

"B… but… yo… you forgave me" she stammered out, tears springing to her eyes.

"No… I gave you a way to live with yourself, and look where you are now, running from a ghost, that's some real good forgiveness" laughed Natsu darkly, "And you know the funniest thing?"

Lucy didn't want to know, but her head rocked forward ever so slightly in a nod.

"I always loved Lissana; I just couldn't bear to see you in pain so I played along with you, I never really loved you, sorry but the dumb big chested blonde just doesn't do it for me" said Natsu with a shrug.

That crack broke Lucy's heart…

Collapsing to her knees, Lucy could only watch as Natsu walked away from her, the stabbing pain in her chest heightened by the lack of feeling she had for the past year.

Gasping for breath she got to her feet, trying to calm herself.

Her eyes finally leveled with the edge of the building, something clicked inside of her broken mind.

"I'm coming Natsu…" she whispered as she shrugged off her coat and kicked off her shoes.

Standing on the edge of the cathedral, Lucy was aware of something glowing behind her but she paid it no mind.

Taking a step into the void, she let herself become weightless and plummeted into oblivion.

That was the day; Lucy Heartfillia took her life…
