QUESTION 26: Correction Carter

As they sat around the table drinking wine and digesting the really rather fantastic meal that Jack O'Neill had 'cooked' (via take-out delivery and plate to plate transfer, shh don't tell!) and chatting the new doctor that Jack had invited along just to even up the number of women in the room piped up. "So Sam, tell me about the first time you stepped through the gate. It all sounds so fascinating, I can't wait to get my turn!"

Before Sam had the chance to speak Daniel was, of course, interrupting. "Your training will be finished in a few weeks right? I'm sure General Hammond will let you go through then, right Jack?"

Jack cocked a slight eyebrow and making a show of finishing his mouthful of wine nodded in slow agreement. "Sure. I'm am totally sure he will." No way, no how, he thought. Hammond was not inclined to send anyone who absolutely did not have to through that gate and O'Neill knew it, but now was not the time to stamp on the tiny doctor's dreams.

Teal'c, opposite O'Neill tipped his head sideways and watched the interaction. To him it was obvious that O'Neill was conveying a falsehood beneath his statement, to which he said nothing.

"Yeah, you'll get to come with us Janet. Why wouldn't you? I mean it makes sense that you get some off-world experience in case you get called into a hot situation." Sam glanced down at her finished meal before indelicately scraping up some of the last remnants of sauce from her plate with her index finger and shoved it in her mouth.

Jack smirked to himself at how much his 2IC had relaxed in the last few weeks. She really was an Air Force brat.

"So anyway." Janet voiced smirking slightly as she watched the Colonel watch his 2IC, oh something more going on there, that was for sure. "Your first time, Sam? I've heard Jack's, I mean Colonel O'Neill's." Cautiously she looked towards the team leader as she made her mistake but he simply waved her down. Janet nodded, off-duty, no rank, got it. "And Daniel's...long, long version which balanced up Mr Teal'c's short version, which basically amounted to 'It was cold.'." She still couldn't relax around the big alien just yet. He was so large he could crush her like a bug and well, he was an alien! "So, how about you?"

"The first time I stepped through the gate?" Carter grinned, leaning back as staring at the ceiling. "It was incredible Janet. I mean there really is no feeling like it. Taking that conscious step forward. Choosing to venture to another planet! I mean come on, how does anyone really describe that?"

Jack shook his head and leaned across the table, gathering up all of their attention. It might well be a technicality but he was sure going to pull her up on it. Take her and her big brain down a peg or two. "Ahem, correction Carter. Your first time through the gate you didn't consciously choose to do anything. If I remember correctly you were to busy being astronomical that I had to shove you through so that we would be inside the ten count."

Sam, slightly surprised by her CO's interruption kicked her brain up a gear. "Uh-huh, that's right Colonel, you did. You ungraciously stole away my first chance to make that decision." There was a slight but very deliberate air of irk to her words as she paused to watch him drop his gaze and redden slightly. "That's why I was about to tell Janet about our trip to Chulak." she glanced at Teal'c "I was the one who made that choice."

Jack pouted slightly as Sam literally glared at him. "Yes well. Carry on."

O'Neill leaned back, huffing slightly as she returned to recanting her story. Too smart, he thought ruefully, too damned smart for her own good.
