If you're looking at me like 'what?' then that is a reasonable response because you have yet to read this chapter. May the reading of chapter seven begin! :P enjoy!
After hauling thick sheets of red wood back to Lyon's place, the girls relaxed in the kitchen sipping lemonade, Cora relaying all that Fila had told her. Lyon stepped in to hear most of it as well as he wiped sweat from his brow.
"Orbetrum?" April made a face, "Why am I not surprised by the strange name."
"If only we had some more clues," Cora sighed and leaned on the kitchen counter, "I'm getting really frustrated with what little we have now, all this over a necklace of all things!"
Lyon poured himself a glass of juice and sat down at the kitchen table, "Well, maybe my people can give you more information that you can use. I will do all I can to help you, it is for the sake of the world after all, and you have helped me. It is only right I return the favor."
April grinned at him, "Yeah, you are definitely a nice find. We finally have another traveling buddy."
Cora smiled, "Just like in the games, we are adding to our party."
Lyon raised an eye ridge, "Games?"
April met Cora's eyes. Cora shrugged lightly and looked at Lyon, "We get inspiration from games we used to play that's all." Save!
"I used to play coconut ball with my brothers," Lyon said with a musing smile on his face, "I never could earn one goal, my brother Tao was the best player, but Goss was just better than me. In the end, I was lucky to make it half across the field."
"I'm not sporty really," Cora said, "I prefer a walk occasionally, but I love relaxing with a good book best of all."
April made a face remembering the long journey to Forest town. That was a pain. Hiking through a forest full of monsters was definitely not a favorite past time of hers.
"So now that we have everything we need to rebuild your homes," Cora began, "Lets prepare for our trip, we should pack items that will last as long as possible."
"Hey Lyon." April said suddenly, "How are we going to move all this wood to your island?" Cora looked her way quickly in surprise. How were they going to get all this stuff to the island? How did he even haul all those fruits to began with?"
"I pull a wagon." He said casually.
"Isn't it heavy?" Cora asked him.
Lyon shrugged, "We are pretty strong lifters, and my legs can move fast. I guess I'm used to hauling fruits across the island to the elders."
"Great," Cora said happily, "Now we just have to get our packs packed and head out."
"Adventure here we come," April sighed with wry smile on her face but a bit of excitement in her voice. Soon they would be on the road again and in the face of certain danger once more, but hey, it would be all right in the end. This game always has happy endings right? April watched Cora laugh with Lyon about something and felt her self detach from the real world to the hidden place of her mind. There she asked herself one question, and it hovered there for a very long time. Would she ever want this adventure to come to an end? If it meant returning to the world she had left behind... With a grim smile she pushed these thoughts out of her head. She was going to try and enjoy these good moments while she still had them. After all…you never know when everything could drop without a warning, and disappear all together.
They left the next day at the first light of the day. All the materials needed to build stable new homes for Lyon's elders were stacked in the wagon. He strapped himself in and gripped the sidebars. He stared down the street his nostrils flaring, taking in the air of a new day. He was ready for the journey.
Cora left the building a bulging pack full of all sorts of travel necessities on her back with April close behind toting her own satchel, "We're ready." Cora told him brightly her eyes sparkling softly under the sun; her hair bound up and out of her face. April had a sunny look as well but more subdued than her friend's shining visage. The red head gazed up at the rising sun her eyes wincing slightly. She hoped it would not be as hot today as it was yesterday.
"Ok we're ready if you are." Cora stood over by Lyon. She frowned at the large load in the wagon, "Umm…are you sure you can handle all this Lyon?"
Lyon dipped his head down in a nod, "Of course, I have lifted far heavier."
"Well, if you're sure." Cora turned to April, "Are you ready? There is no turning back after this."
"Yup. I'm good."
"Ok! Then lets get going!" Cora said cheerfully and Lyon began heading down the street to the other gate out of town that would lead to the lake. The two girls followed both wondering what adventure today would bring.
"Psst. Hey!"
"Nar-snork…. not now ma I'm sleeping."
"Get up you idiot!"
Henry the hammer bro was shot out of his slumber by a heavy book hitting him on the nose. He sat up quickly with a cry of pain, a hand over that part of his face, "Yow! What the heck? WHY DO YOU ALWAYS HIT THE NOSE?"
A very annoyed looking magikoopa peered down at him what looked like a large encyclopedia under his arm, "Hurry up! Get on your feet! Now!"
Henry got up quickly in a flash of anger, "You hit me! What is wrong with you?"
"They. Are. Leaving!" Marvin hissed, "Our quarry is leaving us! Get out of your stupor and lets hurry before we lose them."
Henry rubbed his already sore nose and glared over his hand at the magikoopa, "Yeesh, then why didn't you just say something."
"YOU WOULDN'T GET UP! I YELLED AT YOU FOR TWENTY MINUTES!"
"Oh."
Marvin called for his broom and waited for Henry to get situated, and then they were off, an unhappy hammer bro muttering under his breath and holding on tight to the koopa in front of him feeling both rage and nausea from the sudden take off.
Henry stared at the back of the magikoopa's head, imagining himself hitting him with one of his trusty hammers. After the last couple days, he was really beginning to hate his job.
They started down the path and through a windy prairie. Tall golden grasses waved gently in the breeze and little bees buzzed lazily around gorgeous gatherings of red wild flowers. Cora was admiring the view as she walked while April munched hungrily on what appeared to be a purple pear.
Lyon, as he said he would, carried his weight and more just fine. He had perspiration on his face but his eyes were bright with energy and his steps were light. The wagon he toted creaked lightly under the weight of its load. A crate of fruit sat at the front behind Lyon's shoulder that April had been snacking on.
Cora glanced back at her friend, "Um, April? Shouldn't we try saving that? We have only been walking for ten minutes."
April finished the pear with a contented sigh, "Ugh…its just so good! I could eat this stuff forever." She wiped her sticky mouth on her hand and reached for another. Cora just rolled her eyes and smiled to herself. There was no changing April's mind when it came to some things. April was many things; stubborn was only one of them.
Cora returned to gazing about at the beauty that surrounded them and noticed something on the path up ahead, "Hey, what's that?"
Lyon stopped, April bumping into the wagon with her elbow with a slight yelp of surprise, "Hey! Why did we stop?" She noticed her two companion's looking at something ahead and she glanced that way.
"It's a-" Cora started
"Bob-omb?" Lyon finished.
The group started cautiously towards the small bob-omb that was twitching on its back its feet kicking at the air. Its fuse was not yet lit, but a red glare seemed to be cast on its ebony body. The eyes stared unseeing up at the sky, it acted like it didn't notice they were there at all.
"What's wrong with it?" Cora was in front of the group and moved to get a closer look at the creature. Was it hurt? She could see no visible damage to its body. Maybe it had just fallen over and couldn't get up? There was still so much she didn't know about the creature's here. This could be a natural occurrence for all she knew…
"Wait!" Lyon's voice was sharp and Cora froze in surprise.
The Bob-omb was still and they all gazed at it, April in curiosity, Cora in nervousness and Lyon with suspicion. Without warning there was a snap and a small red spark was cast into the air, making Cora cry out in surprise and step back. She watched in shock as a tiny flame started at the top of the wick. The fuse was now lit.
"RUN!" April screamed before Lyon could open his mouth. April grabbed a stunned Cora by her arm and began running like crazy, Lyon close behind. They heard a loud thud and Cora glanced back to see a sheet of wood from the wagon hit the ground.
"Lyon!" Cora yelled.
"Leave it!" The Yoshi yelled, "We need to put some distance between ourselves and that bob-omb."
April almost tripped over a stump when she heard the explosion. She squeaked in fear and hit the ground, dragging Cora down with her. The two girls huddled on the ground until Lyon spoke, "It's over, we're safe now."
Cora looked up from the ground and past Lyon at the still bob-omb that lay several feet away surrounded by blackened earth.
"That was strange." Lyon murmured.
April stood up, helping a shaken Cora to her feet, "What the heck just happened?"
"I'm not sure," Lyon frowned, "I have never seen a bob-omb act like that before."
"Umm…guys!" Cora's voice was fearful, April looked at her friend and her eyes widened. Cora was pointing at something in the distance, what looked like black shapes appearing from the thicket a yard away. It didn't take long for April to realize what they were.
"I think we should start running now." April said loudly, staring dumb struck at the hundreds of bob-ombs that were heading their way.
"Get on the wagon!" Lyon yelled, "I can run faster than you! Hurry!"
The two girls jumped on, Cora glancing behind them her heart beating fast in her chest, "Lyon! Can you carry us both? We could run-"
"No!" Lyon's yelled as he began running, "Hold on! I'll get us out of here!"
Cora held on tight to the edge of the wagon with April. The wagon bounced dangerously as Lyon raced across the prairie grass like a rocket, the two girls staring back in terror at their pursuers.
"Why can't it ever be easy!" April wailed her voice quivering with each vibration of the wagon.
Cora gasped as they hit a bump in the earth under the wagon's wheels causing her elbow to ram hard against a wood board. She gripped her 'funny bone' with a hand her eyes winced in pain. This day was definitely not starting off well.
Lyon covered the distance well, his feet thumping powerfully against the earth he treaded, his eyes staring straight ahead in determination. He knew this territory well, and if he was right, a river was up ahead. They would be able to lose or defuse the bob-ombs there if they were lit.
The creatures rushing after the friends in a mob were slowly gaining on their targets…Lyon was tiring out. He desperately tried to force himself to speed up but felt his knees cramp sharply in protest. Where was the river? It was only a matter of time before the bombs were upon them.
"I see a river, up ahead!" April yelled. Lyon felt a wave of hope hit him and peered ahead. Yes! He could see the sparkle of water and a faint sound of rushing water.
"Hurry!" Cora cried, "They're getting closer! A few are lit!"
Lyon felt sweat drip into his eyes, burning them, but he ignored it and focused ahead. Almost there! Almost…come on!
"Lyon! We'll sink!" April yelled.
"This part is shallow!" He was almost to the edge but he would have to gain speed before hitting water. They would begin slowing down immediately when they entered. Lyon grunted in pain as he forced his legs into over time. With a burst of willpower he felt himself speed up, his mouth open in gasps of pain while taking in what air he could. Almost…
They hit the water and the two girls were drowned in a spray of it. The wagon began bumping again, most likely the wheels hitting off of the river stones below the water. With Lyon's strength and determination they were steadily making their way to the other side of the river. Cora stared behind them. The bob ombs did not hit the water; they made not one attempt to stick one foot in. Instead they lined the shore, staring out across the river blankly at their escaping prey…each one a perfect line. Cora felt chills run down her spine, the creatures that had been lit stood calmly by their comrades as they began to catch fire and explode.
Cora closed her eyes as a scene that was like one found in a horror movie commenced. The bob-ombs were blowing up willingly. They made no moves to extinguish their fuses, and were blowing up their unlit counter parts as well. Cora placed her hands over her face, just in case her eyes flashed open on their own. April did not close her eyes; she stared at the sight behind them, her face grim.
Lyon finally reached the shore and his knees buckled, sending him flat on his face. Both girls quickly leaped off the wagon and kneeled by the Yoshi's side.
"Lyon?" Cora said softly.
April placed a hand on Lyon's shoulder, "Let him rest Core. He did a great job, he was fantastic."
"Yes," Cora said sadly, "He saved us…and now he is a wreck."
"Nah," April shook her head lightly, "He's resting now, and he'll be ok. Lyon is strong, and this won't knock him out of the game."
Cora gently undid the straps connecting the Yoshi to the wagon. They both grabbed an arm and dragged Lyon further up on land onto the grass near a thicket where he would be comfortable lying in the shade. Wiping perspiration from their faces they dropped down next to him, April leaning with a groan into a tree. They could only hope that whatever greeted them next on their path was easier dealt with, but of course, it was never that easy.
They stayed there for a while, April wandering back to the wagon occasionally to grab a fruit for them to eat. Fortunately, the crate of fruit had been knocked into the wagon rather than outside it, so their food supplies were intact, though some of the softer fruits were bruised. Cora nibbled on a pink plum staring worriedly at Lyon's unconscious form. Poor Lyon…
Soon it was nightfall and the two girls were lying on the ground staring up at the moon that shown brightly through the tree's awning. It didn't take long for them to fall into a deep sleep, the events of that day stressing the two out. They both passed out with Lyon between their sleeping forms, keeping him warm with their body heat as the night went on…
"Now that was suspenseful," the hammer bro remarked as he stared through the trees at the sleeping trio.
"That was quite peculiar," Marvin, murmured, "I have never seen such behavior from a bob-omb before."
"Yeah…definitely freaky," Henry said with a nod, "I wonder what was up with those guys."
The magikoopa ignored his companion and began leafing through a book, "Let's see here…"
Henry noticed Marvin's attention was elsewhere and snorted, "You and that book again."
Once more, the magikoopa ignored the hammer bro and began flipping pages at a fast rate, his eyes scanning text for something. Soon he came to the back page of the book and tucked it away into his cloaks, with a sigh.
"What were you looking for?" Henry asked curiously.
"I was checking to see if there were any spells for warping a bob-ombs behavior, but I found nothing but a mind control spell which doesn't feel right in this situation. Besides that, the spell is almost impossible to master, only the old seers can use them, and even then they are considered forbidden."
"Why?"
Marvin gave him a crooked smile; "Because magikoopas in the past would use this power to benefit themselves in a rise of power over others, there was a splitting of brotherhood, which most did not believe was the way things were supposed to be. We are one group, and we must stay that way…a force to be reckoned with."
Hammer bro looked thoughtful, "Huh…I wonder if us bros have a history."
"Tch…don't count on it, if you do it must be a pretty dull book."
Henry glared, "What makes you magikoopas so special? My uncle was a captain when he was my age! I bet you have no one in your family with such an honorable ranking."
"He was captain," Marvin replied dryly, "And my sister is top in her class and my father is friends with one of the elite magikoopas. Oh, and my cousin was tutored by the great Kamek himself."
"Who is that?" Henry said blankly.
Marvin rolled his eyes, "Oh never mind, lets just sleep here until dawn, I'm tired of talking to you."
Henry grinned, "Ya know, you like me. Who else could you talk to?"
"That tree."
"What? You prefer a tree's company more than mine?"
"Well a tree provides oxygen, you just give me a migraine."
"Where's the love?"
"Touch me, and die."
It was certainly going to be a long night…
