Chapter 4
Jacob's P.o.V.
"I can't believe it…This is just…Man, Seth is gonna' murder me!" I thought. I was in my wolf form, pacing around by the cliffs.
"Oh, you bet I am," Seth growled from behind me. "Dude! That's my sister! You can't just go around imprinting on every girl you see! I thought you imprinted on Bella!" I cringed. Yeah, I thought I had imprinted on her, but thinking and knowing are two different things. Plus, I had grown out of my little crush. She's too pale.
"Yeah…Sure! She's too pale. Let's go with that," Seth thought. He was sitting beside me now.
"Look, man. I'm sorry. You know I can't control it," I explained. "And if I could, you know I would never do that to you." Seth side loudly nodded his big wolfy head.
"I heard that," he laughed. My tongue rolled out the side of my mouth and I barked a laugh, too. "I don't know if you've noticed, but you're head is kind of big, too, Dude."
"So, what do you think she's going to do about Sam and Emily?" I asked.
"I don't know," Seth answered. Then his ears perked up and he looked to his left.
"I'll tell you what I'm gonna' do: I'm just going to talk to them. Talking makes everything better, right?" It was Leah!
"Hey, Lee!" Seth exclaimed, all of a sudden happy.
"Leah…" I breathed. She was so beautiful. Her silvery coat shone, even in the cloudy sky.
"Why, thank you, Jacob," she said in a British accent. Then she looked at Seth. "Baby Bro? Could you give me and Jake a moment, please?" Seth mentally sighed.
"Sure. Anything for you sister dearest," he started to run off. "Note my sarcasm," he added. And phased back.
Leah sat down next to me and looked ahead at absolutely nothing.
"Uhh, yeah. I'm actually looking at that crow over there. You see it?" I huffed and stared ahead. I took the few moments of silence to admire Leah out of the corner of my eye. As I said earlier, her silver fur shone in the dull light. It made her emerald green eyes..."You know, complimenting me won't change anything," Leah growled at me. I growled back.
"Who ever said it was?"
"No one. But it sure does seem like that's what you're trying to do!"
"Then how, Leah, do you say we can change things around and forget it never happened? Enlighten me." Her thoughts were quieted after that.
"We don't. You promised, Jacob. You promised that you would never leave me! But you did."
Whoa. Major déjà vu. Where had I heard that one before? I looked at Leah.
"Yeah. Uh, huh. But what about Sam?"
Her voice got softer. "What about him?"
"Can he be forgiven? And what about Emily? She's that chick he left you for. What about them?"
"Sam...Sam can be forgiven. And so can Emily. I've had the time to think that over," her head shot towards me. And her voice grew a few octaves again. "But that's not the point! The point is that you promised. And you didn't keep it."
"Oh, please! We were, like, ten years old and stupid!" I instantly regretted ever thinking that.
"So. I was the stupid one? Me? Who was there to comfort you when Belly-"
"Bella!"
"-yeah, whatever! Rejected you? How many times did that happen?" I turned away. "Answer me, Black! Too many times to count, that's how many! And what about when Sarah died?" I turned and snapped my teeth at her.
"Don't you dare bring that up. You promised..." My eyes widened and I looked down.
"Yeah. I promised. I'm not the only one breaking promises here, now am I?" I couldn't argue with that. She gave me one last look and started to walked away. "And you know what? Here I am, arguing with you, when I came here to just 'kiss and make up.'" I gave her a wolfy smirk in spite of myself.
"Dang. Aren't we a little bipolar, today. I mean, I'm not complaining. But still, Leah. If you wanted to kiss me, you should of just said so in the first place," I know I was being cocky, but, hey, she's the one that brought it up.
She stopped and turned back to me. "Cut the crap, Jake. And I'm not the one that brought it up. The conversation was getting heated anyway."
"Yeah, you kinda did."
"No, I kinda didn't." Leah copied the way I talked. Which, by the way, was very annoying. "Humph. I take that as a compliment." She shimmied her fur-covered shoulders towards me then sat up again. "Anyway, back to the subject. I didn't start it."
"Yes, you did."
"No I..." Leah turned around. "You know what? I have better things to do than argue with you." She started to walk.
"Yeah, that's right. Go and disappear for another year. It's the only thing you're good at, anyway," Leah paused. Then she phased and ran away. I watched her naked body until I couldn't see it anymore. Then I flopped down on my stomach. Ugh. Someone should just stamp 'douche' on my forehead. I totally screwed things up between us. It's not that I meant to act the way I did...It's just that...I felt someone phase and quickly sat up.
"Hey, man, how did things go with Leah?" It was Jared. I huffed, and replayed the whole conversation over again in my head. Jared snorted a humorless laugh. "That bad, huh?" I nodded.
"I totally screwed things over between us."
"Jake, it was already screwed up to begin with." I looked at him. I was trying so hard not to believe it...But he was right. "Yeah, you know it...Wait! I am?"
"You're what?" It was Quil.
"Jake says I'm right!"
"Whoa. Jare's actually right about something! And that something is...?"
"Leah." Jared and I answered at the same time. Quil finally met up with us in our spot in the forest and sat down. He looked at me.
"I'm going to have to do the whole thing over again, aren't I?" I asked. Quil's tongue rolled out of his mouth, and he wagged his tail playfully. "You guys pain me." I replayed the conversation again.
"You're in reeeaaal deep, Jacob," Quil said.
"Don't remind me."
"And you imprinted on her and everything..." Jared shook his head. "SMH, man. SMH."
"I can't talk to you guys anymore. Have fun on patrol," I phased and slipped my shorts back on. I walked slowly back to my house. What can I say? The guys were right. I really was in deep.
And the worse part about it was I didn't know how to get myself out.
And...There it is! The next chapter is Leah's visit with her dad. It's going to be so emotional, you might cry...I guess you're going to have to wait to figure it out!
