Elon immediately grasped onto her other hand and shrieked as he stepped onto it, his legs shaking uncontrollably. "This is not safe this is not safe this is not—"
"Oi bambi, Shut it. You're disrupting my tanning session," Scarlet was laid out on a lawn chair with her face turned towards the sun.
"So where to?" Connor asked, looking out at the ocean. He threw Andrew a skeptical look. "Do you even know how to drive this thing?"
"Yeah," He started heading to the flying bridge and Connor followed. "All those summer's at the country club didn't teach me nothing."
Connor grinned. "So you were –"
"Shut it and help me set up this boat." Andrew gestured to the anchor chain, and both boys helped heave it onboard.
Eirene was still on the main deck with Elon and both girls. She stared warily at Scarlet and gave Carrie a nervous glance. They were such polar opposites; Eirene wondered how they came to be a team. Scarlet was spunky and loud, she was blunt and overtly sexual. It showed in the way she dressed and carried herself. Carrie, on the other hand, was a ball of awkwardness. She stood like she wasn't sure what to do with herself, and fidgeted every minute. Her glasses were slightly too big for her face so she kept pushing them back, and her hair had been cut at a weird length so her bangs were always falling in her face, so matter how she tied it.
"I can give you something to watch." Scarlet brandished, sitting up for a moment; she cocked her head to the side when looking at Eirene, and then started to lift her shirt up. "Or do you just like to stare?"
Eirene gaped at her, and then averted her eyes. "What are you doing?"
"Didn't you hear me earlier? I'm tanning." Surprisingly she was wearing a black swim top under her shit, but that just made it even stranger. "I don't get opportunities like this often."
Elon was staring too, wide eyed and red faced. Eirene snapped her fingers to break him out of it. "Focus, Elon." She glared at Scarlet. "Put your shirt back on."
"Or what?" She smirked. "Are you gonna make me?"
"Scarlet," Carrie pleaded. "Don't start fights with actual demigods."
"Oh please," She scoffed, lying back down to tan. "What is little Miss Princess going to do to me?"
Listen to your friend, Scarlet. Eirene thought. She wasn't going to actually fight her; if the girl proved to be annoyance she would just ignore her. They were only taking these girls along so they wouldn't have to worry about them destroying the city while they were gone, and so Dennis would be easier to approach and stop when they found him. Eirene would gain nothing from bickering with Scarlet, so she left to go find the boys.
"Come on, Elon. The guys need you at top," She pulled away the satyr with the wandering eyes and led him upstairs to where she saw the boys head. Once they arrived upstairs they saw Andrew messing with the controls while Connor lounged on the chairs with his eyes closed; tanning.
"At least your shirt is on." She murmured.
Connor's eyes cracked open. "Pardon?"
"I am here if you need help navigating!" Elon suddenly exclaimed, his face red. He seemed eager to stay upstairs and distract himself from being downstairs.
"Uh, yeah actually…" Andrew's brows were furrowed in concentration as he tried to figure out how to navigate the controls. He pressed a few more buttons and gripped the steering. "What general direction are we headed in?"
Elon stood there for a moment and closed his eyes, letting Matthew's location wash over him. He opened his eyes and pointed. "East,"
"Alright," Andrew started spinning the helm. "You might want to hold onto something," The ship suddenly shifted and Eirene almost toppled over. Connor stood quickly and steadied her; his hand grasping her waist firmly.
"Easy there," He smiled at her. Eirene tried to hide her heated cheeks by looking away, and instead laughed when she saw Elon tangled up with Andrew. He had latched onto him when the ship had moved, with his hoofs around Andrew's waist.
"Let go of me!"
"If I do I'll die!" Elon sobbed.
"We'll all die if I can't steer the ship!"
Eirene started laughing, and so did Connor. She turned to him and found herself embarrassed again by his closeness, and stepped away. "Thank you." She smiled. Connor returned it, but they were soon distracted as a voice called to them from downstairs.
"Hey! A little heads up would've been nice!" Scarlet yelled. "Carrie nearly fell over the railing!"
Andrew rolled his eyes, not even bothering to respond. He tried to pry Elon off him once more, but the satyr wouldn't budge. "Can someone give me a hand here?"
Connor pried Elon off Andrew. "No need to fret, you'll be fine." He nodded at Eirene. "Keep him from puking, will you? I'll go downstairs and try to find out what else our 'honoured' guests may know."
"Approach with caution," Eirene warned. Connor gave her a questioning look, but she didn't elaborate. He'll see for himself. She ushered Elon to a row of chairs and sat with him, rubbing the satyr's back. Sweat was already starting to appear on his forehead, and Eirene padded it away with his shirt.
"It's just a little sea sickness," She told him. "You'll be fine."
"Just focus on Matthew's direction and tell me if it changes," Andrew said.
Eirene looked at him and noticed how comfortable he looked at the helm, his face was relaxed and his hands were firmly holding the wheel. A slight wind blew over; ruffling his hair. This is the most relaxed I've seen him. She thought. He must love the ocean.
"You must love the ocean," She said. Elon threw her a look, and she shook her head. "No I mean…Andrew,"
He turned to her. "Hm?"
This could be my chance to get to know him better. "Do you…do you like the Ocean?"
He pondered. "It's alright."
He clammed up after that, but Eirene wasn't discouraged. "Did you come out here often with your family?"
She noticed his grip of the steering became tighter. "Not really."
"How did you get so good at navigating then?" She watched him slightly turn the wheel. "Someone must've taught you."
"I taught myself."
She sighed. There was no use to small talk with Andrew, not when all he gave were small, clipped answers.
"You have to be careful," Elon piped up, looking out at the waters warily. "I sense dangers on these waters."
"That's just your stomach talking. We'll be fine."
Meanwhile with Connor, found himself making some progressive with the girls. He'd finally convinced Scarlet to put her shirt back on, for starters.
"Everyone on this boat is such a bore." She complained, fishing out shades from her bag.
Who brings sunglasses on a monster hunting trip? "And what makes you so interesting?"
"Wouldn't you like to know?"
He grinned, deciding to play her little game; it would be the quickest way to get some answers. "I would, actually." He sank back into the chair, spreading his arms and legs. Scarlet's grin grew exponentially while leaning forward.
"Alright, shrinkydink, what exactly would you like to know?"
He inwardly sighed. I'm taller than you! Why do you keep calling me shrinkydink? Connor pushed the thought aside and prepped his first question. "How did you two lovely ladies get to know Dennis?"
Scarlet frowned, leaning back to her chair. "Oh. You just want to know about Dennis,"
"I already know him," Or at least I thought I did. "We met at Camp. How did you guys meet?"
"He found us." Carrie was sitting further from them, her lungs bunched together on a lounge chair. "Well, me at least."
Found you? "What do you mean?"
"I didn't know how at the time but…he'd been following me. He somehow knew that I could see monsters, and he approached me because of it."
Dennis has the list. Connor thought grudgingly. There was no other way to know which humans had the sight otherwise. Zeus, Connor cursed. I told them it was a bad idea to keep Dionysus in charge of it. He's drunk on cola half the time.
"He showed up my school as a new student and started befriending me. I didn't think much of it then because he said he had skipped a grade like me. But I should have guessed his ulterior motives. I never had friends before."
Connor reframed from cringing at the sadness of it. "So he pretended to be a student at your school?"
She nodded. "We got close, sort of. I noticed that sometimes he'd act weird; his bag would be filled with books and papers that we didn't need for school. But one day, during student orientation, that was when he revealed everything."
Scarlet hit Carrie's leg. "Hey, don't go yapping about your whole life story," She leaned in closer to whisper, "We don't even know this guy!"
"Dennis and Matthew do, and aren't we supposed to trust them?" Carried turned back to Connor and continued telling her story. "Dennis and I were part of the welcoming committee for the incoming freshmen. Everything was going fine until these two new students just walked out. I was going to follow them but Dennis stopped me. Instead, these two cheerleaders went after them. After Dennis saw the cheerleaders leave he insisted we followed them. So we did."
Familiarity at this story was nagging the back of Connor's mind. "What did you say was the name of your school?"
"Goode High School."
He remembered. That was the high school Percy and Rachel had went to when they were attacked by two empusas. Holy Hera, Carrie knows Percy?
"What we saw…I was horrified." Carrie memory of the moment was becoming clearer; she remembered it like it was yesterday.
Dennis has insisted they followed the two cheerleaders Tammi and Kelli. Carrie had resisted at first but then followed along because she didn't want Dennis to get in trouble alone. They'd followed closely behind the cheerleaders and saw them enter a band room. Moments later, loud noise erupted from that room, as if equipment was being flung and thrown around.
"What the hell…" Dennis stepped forward and tried to enter the room, but Carrie grabbed his arm and pulled him back.
"What are you doing? Stay back!"
"Can't you hear the ruckus they're making?" He tried to yank his arm back but Carrie didn't budge.
"We should call the teachers; they'll sort it out."
Dennis let out a frustrated sigh. "Carrie–"
The door burst open and the two freshmen ran out – followed by two…What in the world is that?! Carrie couldn't make out what she was staring at. They looked like Tammi and Kelli, their pom poms still by their side and uniforms still on, but their bodies looked like demons, with their ashy white skin and legs that looked like shaggy donkey's hoofs.
Dennis immediately grabbed Carrie and ran as fast as he could out of the hallway, slamming open the doors to the student orientation and startling half the freshman class.
