Chapter 19
Meeting Evelyn
The old man turned around, slightly startled by our entrance. His thin dark grey hair was neatly combed to the side and he looked at us through a pair of round glasses.
"Ah Bernard," he said. "You scared me. I thought you'd already left."
"I'm Sorry, Mr Kingsley. I didn't mean to scare you… I'll be on my way as soon as I've escorted this young man out." Bernard gestured towards Jack.
Mr Kinsley gave the boy a curious glance.
"You must be Mr Brewer's son, I can see that," Mr Kinsley took a step forward to shake Jack's hand. "Nice to meet you. I heard you wanted to join."
"Yes sir," Jack said, having trouble to not look at the girl. Mr Kingsley smiled.
"You resemble your father a lot," he said, probably meaning for that to be a compliment, however Jack didn't seem to like to be compared to his father. "Is that a bird you've got there?" Mr Kingsley looked fascinated at me, making my heart beat fast.
"Yes. He's…" Jack trailed off, looking at Bernard, not knowing what to say.
"The boy found it on his way here. It's injured." Bernard stepped in, giving Jack a glance that told him to keep quiet and let him do the talking.
"I see." Mr Kinsley said, and turned to Jack again. "I'm sorry, I couldn't show you around myself. I'm a bit busy at the moment." He nodded towards the girl.
"Kim?" Jack said, looking questioningly at her.
"You two know each other?" Mr Kinsley wondered surprised.
The girl stood frozen, waiting for Jack to answer for her. I watched her with a mixture of fear, anger and curiosity. As far as I knew, I was the only one in the room who knew her secret. She wasn't Kimberly Crawford, but the evil witch the Brotherhood had spent ages to prepare to destroy.
Of course, being disguised as someone else had its risks and she clearly hadn't expected to run into someone that recognized her as me. She would have to be really careful not to blow her cover.
"Kind of," Jack answered after a moment. "She goes in my class and we train at the same dojo…" I couldn't help but notice the way Jack had changed his attitude. His face was like a rock –unreadable, and there was an edge to his voice that I'd been used to hear as a human. Shortly said; he suddenly became the Jack he was at the dojo and at school, or where ever else he would run into me. Not the real Jack who I had just started to see as real friend.
It hurt a little to know that he changed as soon as Kim Crawford was around. Had I really been affecting him that much?
Bernard and Mr Kingsley looked back and forth between the two teens. They seemed confused and almost a bit concerned. Mr Kingsley turned to Bernard.
"Can I talk to you for a second?"
"Of course, sir."
"Will you excuse us, Miss Crawford?" Mr Kinsley said towards the girl. She gave him a nod and the men left the room. As soon as they were gone an awkward silence filled the room and Evelyn eyed Jack with interest, looking him up and down. She wasn't exactly smooth and the way she checked him out made me feel embarrassed, knowing that Jack would think it was me. The boy shifted uncomfortably, looking away and trying to get her to stop watching him.
When it didn't work, he suddenly turned to her, clenching his teeth.
"What are you staring at?!" he spat, clearly annoyed. Now, if it had really been me staring at him, I would have backed off slightly, and to be completely honest I would probably have been a bit frightened. But still, I would've tried to come up with a comeback of some sort. Then I would wait for the right opportunity to be through something back at him. Evelyn on the other hand didn't react like that at all. She didn't flinch nor did she avert her gaze. If anything her stare got more intense and a smirk showed on her lips.
The fact that he didn't have any affect on her made Jack feel even more uncomfortable and I could see that he was unsure how to handle the situation.
"Will you stop looking at me!" he tried again.
"Sure," she said and turned her attention to the paintings on the wall. A disturbingly satisfied smile made it to her mouth as she studied them, and I wished that I could see what thoughts were going through her mind.
She seemed to find the pictures more interesting than Jack and I knew that now would be my only chance. Carefully, I pecked Jack's hand that I was still sitting in. He looked down at me and I quickly pointed at the curse, engraved on the wall.
"Is that it?" he mouthed, making sure that the girl wouldn't hear. I nodded. Thankfully, Jack's a smart guy and having the same thought as I, he didn't need any more instructions. He swiftly picked up his phone from the back pocket of his jeans, with his free hand and took a picture.
"What are you doing?"
I felt my heart almost stop, by the sound of my own voice. She'd seen it…
Jack who had no idea that he was face to face with Evelyn, the evil witch from the legend, said without the slightest concern;
"What does it look like…?" Having his phone up already, he turned quickly and took a picture of her, just like that. My eyes widened. What did he just do!?
Jack almost grinned as she blinked surprised.
"What are you doing?" she hissed, although nervousness could be heard in her voice. "You're not allowed to take pictures in here!"
"Well, you're not allowed to be here," he retorted and put his phone back down. "This is a men only organisation."
"Oh, and you consider yourself a man?" she folded her arms across her chest.
"I'm certainly not a girl, if that's what you mean."
"Hm…" she muttered under her breath, looking at him again as if to try and figure him out. I cringed, hoping that Bernard and Mr Kingsley would return before Jack would accidentally spill something that could reveal who I was. "Are you always like this?" she wondered.
"Like what?"
"You know what I mean," she said. Jack gave her a weird look, not really knowing what she meant. Realizing that she wouldn't get an answer, she sighed and unfolded her arms, taking a few steps closer. I could feel Jack tighten his grip around me, while tensing up. "Tell me honestly," she said. "What is a guy like you doing here?"
Jack frowned, weighing his answer.
"I'm gonna join," he said shortly.
"Really? That's interesting…" she said. "Brewer…wasn't it?"
"Ehm, yeah…" Jack answered and gave her another strange glance, wondering why she wouldn't know that already. She smiled slyly, locking eyes with him. Jack swallowed. He was nervous, I could tell. She didn't act the way he was used to, making him wonder what was going on.
"So…" he started, stiffly. "What are you doing here?" Her smile got bigger, showing almost all her teeth.
"Shouldn't you like to know…" she said just as the door opened and the two men re-entered the room.
Bernard gestured for Jack.
"Time to go Jackson," he said. The boy quickly made it over to him, happy to leave.
"See you in school," Evelyn said as he walked past her.
"See you…" Jack muttered in response.
"Oh and by the way," she said, causing him to stop right at the door and turn around. "That bird of yours… is a female." Jack frowned and looked down at me as I felt my blood drain from my face. Had she figured out who I was?
"Thought you'd like to know…" She smiled and turned to leave in the opposite direction with Mr Kinsley.
Bernard pulled slightly on Jack's arm, urging him to get going. Jack shook his head, as if trying to get rid of what she'd just said about me and followed the man to the exit.
~~~~Wings of Love~~~~
"That is officially the weirdest place I've ever been," Jack said as he walked down the street. I was back on his shoulder, listening to him rambling. "I can hardly believe that there are still people who believe in all that stuff. And dad is one of them… Why hasn't he told me about it?" he flung his arms out.
It had been a lot for him to take in and he was still unsure if he should believe everything that had been said in there.
"Can you believe they actually had a dungeon?" he said. I shook my head. I had definitely not expected that, but now, knowing what they were doing and what they believed in, it wasn't so strange. There were other things that I was more concerned about. Like for instance, Evelyn. What was she doing at the headquarters? How come she knew I was a female? Did she know who I was or had she only recognized me as a female thanks to the colours of my feathers? And why had she looked at Jack the way she'd done?
I hadn't liked it all. Frankly I hadn't liked how any of the people in that place had acted around Jack. Finnegan had been really strange and Bernard had gotten really worried as soon as he'd noticed me and practically dragged us out the door…
I glanced at my friend, worriedly. There was no doubt that I had brought him into something dangerous. If only I'd known how dangerous…
"I'm starving," Jack said as we reached his street. It was almost noon and we hadn't eaten since breakfast. Walking past his neighbour's house where Jack had kicked that mailbox, just a few days ago, a high and annoying voice rang through the air;
"Ain't it a little early to be home already?"
Jack shot the woman standing in her garden a glare. She wore an apron and gloves covered with dirt. All around her stood pots with plants, waiting to get into the soil.
"Why do you care?" Jack muttered, continuing to walk. She put her hands on her hips.
"Shouldn't you be in school at this hour?" She said matter-of-factly.
"That's none of your business," Jack retorted rudely and went past her. She shook her head, getting back to her pots while mumbling;
"I feel sorry for dear Mr Brewer, having such an arrogant and ungrateful son."
I don't know if she'd meant for Jack to hear that or not. But he did anyway and his mood shifted instantly. Clenching his teeth, he walked up to his house and practically swung the door open, making it inside, before slamming it shut behind him. I cringed where I sat on his shoulder, not daring to make a sound, afraid that I might accidentally provoke him.
"Just my luck for her to see me…" he muttered while kicking of his shoes.
~~~~Wings of Love~~~~
Jack sat with his guitar on the bed, strumming it. He'd been very low ever since we'd gotten home and he hadn't said anything as he'd fixed some lunch for us to eat. Even though he'd occasionally smiled a few times as I had whistled to try and cheer him up, I could still see that there was something bothering him. He didn't seem mad or angry, more frustrated I would say.
I really needed for him to bring the pictures on his phone to Claire, but I hadn't got the opportunity to let him know that. Sitting on his bedside table, I tried to bring the courage up to interrupt him. Luck seemed to be on my side though and he suddenly put his guitar away, leaning it against the bed. He sighed, and shot me a glance.
"Today's been crazy. There's been so much to take in, my head hurts," he said, rubbing his temple. "I hope we got what you needed though,"
"Tsip," I nodded. He smiled.
"Good." Reaching into his back pocket, he picked out his phone. His dark eyebrows were slightly wrinkled in concentration as he looked through his newly taken photos. He seemed to be reading the curse to himself, trying to understand it.
"This is all so confusing," he shook his head. "I still can't believe that my dad has been a part of a witch hunting organisation for a year without me knowing anything about it. I mean, what they're doing in there is pretty extreme. How has he managed to keep all of that a secret from me?" He looked up from the phone just to stare out at nothing. "The thing that's bothering me the most is; why he would want to keep it a secret from me? When I think about it now, the only times when dad gets really mad at me is either when I misbehave, which I can avoid, or whenever I'm close to finding out something about the legend or the order… Like every time he's caught me in his office for instance. I've never really seen it before. I've just thought that he'd gone mad at me because it was something wrong with me. That it was just the way it was supposed to be…" he trailed off, his eyes falling to the floor. I could see that a part of him still believed that and I quickly got over to his shoulder.
"Tsiptsi." Jack turned his head, looking at me.
"This isn't just a legend, right?" he said, holding up his phone with the image of the curse shown on the screen. "And you have something to do with it."
I nodded. He thought for a moment.
"And it's not a coincident that Kim looks exactly like Gabriella, is it? She has something to do with this too…"
I nodded while shrugging. Actually, I didn't know the reason why we looked the same or what Gabriella had to do with me, but according to Claire; I was destined to be the one opening that box, letting Evelyn's soul out. So I was a part of all of this, I just didn't know how exactly… And I had begun to realize that Jack was somehow connected to all of this too…
The teen suddenly stood up, walking over to his desk.
"Okay, Bucky. You came to me for a reason. There's something you want me to do," he said. I looked at him hopefully and flew after him. "So I've got the information from the Brotherhood. Now, what do I do with it?" He opened up a book to let me be able to communicate with him the way I'd done before.
I hopped down onto the pages, excitedly.
"Take…the...pictures…" Jack started to read out loud as I pointed at the words. As Friday was only two days away I had started to lose hope a little bit, but now I felt positive that we'd have a chance to stop Evelyn and I'd be able to get my body back.
Eagerly I pointed at the next word, just to notice that Jack wasn't reading along with me any longer. I glanced up at him, confused. He wasn't looking down at the book as something outside the window had caught his attention. Wondering what it could be, I flew to the window to take a peek down the street. Since Jack's room was on the side of the house you could only see the western part of the street and you had a perfect view over the entire garden of that lady we'd met earlier. It was there that Jack had found his dad talking to the woman. She was standing with one hand on her hip while widely gesturing with her other.
"Great…" Jack muttered. "I hate that scold… She always has to tell him everything."
We both watched them in silence as they separated and Mr Brewer walked with determination towards his house. I gave Jack a worried glance. Was this what he'd been afraid of would happen?
Jack had closed his eyes, listening to the front door opening and closing downstairs. I felt myself cringe into a small ball, hiding behind a stack of books on his desk as a pair of foot steps made it to the second floor. Jack stood frozen, waiting.
A knock on the door was heard and Jack opened his eyes.
"Yes?"
The door opened, revealing Mr Brewer as expected.
"Hi, Jackson," he said with a smile.
"Hi…"
"I'm home now. Thought you'd liked to know."
Jack nodded, not daring to look at his father.
"You know, I was just down, talking to Ms Turner." Mr Brewer began, receiving a quick worried glance from Jack. "She told me that you came home two hours ago. Is that true?"
"Yes, sir," Jack said quietly, looking down and taking a hold of his elbow like he used to do whenever he was worried or upset. Mr Brewer walked up to him.
"School didn't end until fifteen minutes ago," he said, glancing at his watch.
"I know…" Jack said. "I had a headache…" Mr Brewer folded his arms, giving Jack a disapproving glance.
"And that gives you the right to just walk home like that?"
Jack didn't answer, having learned long ago that it was far better to just keep quiet.
"How many times do I have to tell you that it's important for you to attend school?" Boring his eyes into the boy, he waited for some kind of response.
"I'm sorry," Jack said. "I won't do it again."
"You shouldn't really be apologizing to me. And we both know that you will do it again. You always do." Mr Brewer got more irritated as he spoke, as if he were reminded of how bad Jack could be. "I really wish that you could just be a nice well behaved boy for once, but that seem to be an impossibility. I don't know how or where you've gotten your stupidity."
Jack squeezed his elbow, hurt by his father's words as Mr Brewer went to grab Jack's bag that he always kept dropped on the floor, next to his bed.
"I seem to be the only one who cares about your future…" he muttered, fishing out Jack's school books from the bag. "We'll have to fix this as always." Walking over to Jack's desk he shoved the book we'd been using away, replacing it with the stack of school stuff. His movements were harsh and he practically threw the first book opened. Jack just watched him. His passiveness got Mr Brewer really annoyed though.
"Well, what are you waiting for?!" He grabbed Jack by the shirt, forcing him down onto the chair. Jack's eyes widened from surprise and fear for what might happened. "Study!"
The man let go of him and he quickly grabbed a pen, turning his attention to the book.
"Good. Now, I'll be downstairs and I expect you to stay here, working until supper."
Jack nodded, clenching his teeth in frustration. Mr Brewer seemed satisfied with that and turned to leave. Reaching the threshold, he said;
"And you're grounded for another two days,"
Jack looked up at him.
"But I need to be at the dojo. I promised Rudy…" Jack stopped talking when he saw the look on his father's face. There was no use in discussing with him. He'd made up his mind and once that was done, there was no chance for Jack in the world to change it.
Mr Brewer gave him a nod, knowing that he didn't need to say anything. Jack had already gotten the message.
As soon as he was gone, Jack took a pillow that had been lying on the floor and threw as it as hard as he could at the door, getting rid of the frustration he felt inside.
"I hate my life," he muttered and turned back to the history book in front of him...
That was all for now guys. Next chapter will be up on Tuesday the 15th, unless there'll be like 10 people telling me to update earlier. Then I will try to do that.
And another question for you: What was Evelyn disguised as Kim doing at the Headquarters of the Brotherhood of the Fireguard?
See you and thanks for reading.
