Author's Notes: Yup. I'm a terrible person. I was so tempted to stop writing this story altogether because of the crazy things going on in my life right now, but I hafta do it, even if only 3 people read it. I am so sorry of the huge gap. Please forgive me… And please review for better or for worse. It keeps me going.
Woody spent every moment he could sitting in that Hospital room. He fell asleep on the uncomfortable couch next to Bo's bed every night, even though Star Command had graciously provided quarters for them. And although the first few nights were grim, Bo seemed to be improving, and eating at the very least.
In the meantime, Buzz was planning a trip to Capitol Planet to see Commander Nebula. He hadn't run into XR again since his first encounter with him a few days before, and he felt a little guilty. But the robot had been way out of line with his accusations about Earthlings.
Jessie had been missing that day, and the Space Ranger set out to find her, worried about possible fights that she could pick. He asked everyone he passed in the hallways, finding it difficult to believe that no one had seen her. She was wearing her normal cowgirl attire that morning, as far as he could remember.
The men's and women's quarters were separate from each other, and they had been placed in rooms with other rangers that were waiting to be deported. Every morning for the past few days Jessie had a foul mood, probably from the other women she was staying with.
Buzz wandered the station for a bit and then noticed some commotion coming from the shooting range training arena. Many were crowded around the entrance, trying to see inside. His heart skipped a beat. It couldn't be Jessie, could it?
He pushed past everyone and at last stole a glance at the range, where indeed the redhead stood blaster in hand with a smirk on her face. She looked at the crowd.
"Anyone else think that Earth is inferior to the rest of the galactic alliance?" she asked smugly.
Buzz shoved his way in, seeing the targets she had decimated. Every single one had been hit right between the eyes. Even the ones that moved.
When Jessie spotted Buzz, she set down the blaster and giddily ran up to him and grabbed his hand. "Didja see them Buzz? I sure showed the rest of these doughheads a thing or two about Earth. I got the highest ranking for training today!"
The Space Ranger was wide eyed. "Maybe for a year..."
"Any updates about Bo today?" She asked him as they walked past the crowd together, whose mouths were wide open.
"Woody slept over there again last night. He told me this morning they were doing some tests. She's looking better though."
Jessie clasped her hand in his. He squeezed it slightly. Together they walked down the long curved halls where spectacular views of Capital planet were illuminated by giant windows lining the outside walls. The cowgirl was suddenly peculiarly quiet, keeping her eyes glued to her boots.
Buzz tried to initiate a conversation a few times, but she was deep in thought. He finally brought up something he regretted immediately.
"It's funny, with you beating all the cadets today. I bet if my old Commander had been there, he would've recruited you on the spot."
Jessie's eyes suddenly darted straight. "You think?" she mumbled absently.
"Uh well…" She couldn't have taken him seriously, could she? Was she actually interested in being a space ranger? "Heh, well, it's a lot more complicated than that. You've got to get years of academy training, learn the ropes, pass the modules…"
But Jessie wasn't listening. Her mind was already concocting a plan.
Late that night the cowgirl tiptoed past her rude roommates made her way to the medical ward. Some of the lights had been dimmed or turned off in the hallways to signify it was late, but there was still the occasional ranger running errands or just roaming the hallways with a friend. She ignored the looks she received while eagerly entering the lobby. After talking to the receptionist and taking the familiar winding pathway to Bo's room, she slipped in the room.
Immediately she saw Woody, on the couch again dead asleep. Deep circles outlined his eyes, and he hadn't shaved for awhile either. His hair was a scruffy mess, and he looked like he hadn't had a good nights rest for weeks.
Bo on the other hand was seen reading Pride and Prejudice. Where she even got the book was a mystery…
The woman set down her book as soon as she heard Jessie's boots click on the smooth unnaturally white panelled floor. She smiled, and patted a place next to her on the bed. Jessie tried not to let the amount of tubes running through the delicate white arm distress her, and plopped down on the bed remembering too well what it was like staying in a Star command hospital room, and the ridiculously uncomfortable beds.
She was about to say something, and then she remembered Woody, and turned to see if he was still asleep.
"He's a heavy sleeper, believe me," Bo said in response to her thoughts.
"Good, because I have a feeling he wouldn't really understand this either," Jessie stated, tugging on her braid. It comforted Bo to see her friend with her old nervous habits.
"What can I help you with?"
"Today I thought about Buzz, and how much he loves this job. I see him interact with everyone and visit with old friends, and I feel guilty pulling him away from all of it. But I was thinking… what if we worked together? What if I could become a Space Ranger so that he wouldn't have to leave, and I wouldn't have to wait long periods without seeing him again?" Jessie said, finding it to feel good to release something she wouldn't dare share with anyone else.
Bo's eyebrows furrowed. She extended a hand and rested on top of Jessie's. "That's noble of you. But just remember, you'd be leaving us too."
Jessie's head dropped. "I know that. And I feel bad about that too…"
"But I suppose… If I were half as brave as you, I'd probably consider doing anything your brother does too to be closer to him."
Jessie scoffed. "Oh yeah, half as brave as me. Are you sure you remember everything? Because I recall you being the one who encountered people who tried to kill you countless times, and you managed to save us all from an incinerator."
Bo looked away. "I don't even know who that woman is anymore. And, in all honesty, I'm not sure I want to. I know that I did those things, but it doesn't feel like it. But I guess I can forget all about that. As soon as I get better, I don't want to get involved with anything dangerous or life threatening again."
The cowgirl tried to hide her expression as she immediately thought of the wanted posters.
"Anyway, if you feel like you need to become a Space Ranger, do what you need to do. I'll back you up 100%" Bo said, yawning.
"You probably ought to get some rest. Thanks for the advice Bo."
