~*~Steele at His Worst : Chapter Six~*~
With his attorney's help, Remington prepared the legal documents that showed that he and Laura had legally adopted Cristofer. After the adoption was final, he and Laura had a good time decorating the baby's little bedroom. The nursery wasn't all that big, but it had everything that Cristofer could possibly want or need.
"I guess now, the only thing I have left of my sister is Cristofer," Remington sighed as he and Laura stood over the crib watching their newly adopted son as he slept.
"Ohhh Rem, I know how you feel," Laura remarked, giving him a tender hug. "But you'll always have Cristofer and me. And before long... we'll be having our own little family."
"Laura, are you?" Remington asked, looking at her quickly.
Laura seemed embarrassed. In fact, she even blushed a lovely shade of pink. "Well... no, not yet," Laura stated. "But we haven't been trying to prevent it.'
Just then, the doorbell rang, interrupting their conversation. "I'll get that, love," Remington offered.
He entered the living room as Laura followed behind him. Remington opened the door to a young delivery boy who held a giant bouquet of sweet-smelling red roses.
"These are for Laura Steele. Could you sign, sir?" asked the boy.
"Of course," Remington agreed as he signed the delivery form attached to the clipboard the boy carried. Remington handed the boy a ten dollar tip.
"Gee! Thanks, Mister!" the boy exclaimed.
Laura took the roses as Remington closed the door. "They're beautiful! I wonder who sent them!" Laura said with excitement, the curiosity getting to her.
"A secret admirer, no doubt," Remington chuckled. "Should I break out the bubbly?"
"Ahhhh, there's a card," Laura said as she opened the envelope and withdrew a small slip of paper. It said:
To my beautiful wife,
With you, I need no alias, for only with you do I truly know my name.
R.S.
"Ohhh, Rem, that's so beautiful," Laura said in a whisper as her brown eyes became misty with unshed tears.
Suddenly Remington switched out all the lights, but one really dim one. The soft melody of "Feelings" poured forth as Remington flipped on a recording of their wedding tune.
"Care to dance, Mrs. Steele?" he asked, setting the flowers aside on the sofa as he drew Laura close in his arms.
"I'd love to," she agreed as she placed her head upon his chest.
