Chapter 4
Harry stood in front of the Headmaster, who stared at him, nodding and humming as Professor McGonagall explained what had happened. When she finished, the Headmaster looked thoughtful, "This is indeed interesting."
"What do you mean, Professor?" Harry asked, unsure of what the man was implying.
"You are indeed special, Mr. Potter," Dumbledore mused, "This is indeed peculiar."
Professor McGonagall raised an eyebrow, exasperated with the Headmaster's ambiguity, "Headmaster, what does this mean?"
The Headmaster looked up, a small smile on his lips, "Mr. Potter is a rare type of wizard. More like a mage, really."
Mage. Harry had to use all of his self control to keep himself from stiffening. Did Earthland mages often end up in this dimension like Edolas? "Mage?" he repeated, blinking in faux confusion.
"Yes, indeed. A mage is a wizard that does not need a wand to practice magic. They usually specialize in one particular type of magic. What is most peculiar, is the fact that the last known mages were the four founders of Hogwarts," Dumbledore explained.
McGonagall's eyebrows shot up in disbelief, "Since the four founders?"
"Yes," Dumbledore said, eyes twinkling. "Gryffindor's magic was based on battle. He was rumored to be able to switch armor in middle of a fight without a wand, and he was known for his control of weapons."
Harry's eyes went wide. That sounded awfully similar to Earthland's Requip.
"Slytherin was similar to Animagi magic, but he was able to turn into different types of animals."
Take Over magic.
"Ravenclaw's magic was rumored to imitate other magics. Whatever magic she saw she could replicate."
Memory Make magic.
"Hufflepuff was able to control plants. She could make plants grow out of the earth with just one word," Dumbledore said, shaking his head in amazement. "Mr. Potter, this is amazing."
So Hufflepuff had Earth magic.
"So what does that mean?" McGonagall urged, still not sure with where Dumbledore was going.
"We have portraits of the four in a very special room. For subjects that require a wand, Mr. Potter, you will be going to that room to train your magic," Dumbledore said, smiling cheerily. "The four will help you find your specialty magic first though."
"I'm not too sure what this means, but when I tried to cast the spell, I let off icicles. Would that mean my prefered magic is ice?" Harry asked, purposefully leading the Headmaster on, hoping they could go into training as soon as possible.
"Ah, yes, that should be it," said man mused, nodding. "Interesting. Well, since you now have Herbology, you should go. Don't want you to be late, right?"
Harry nodded, "Thanks, sir."
"It's my pleasure. Come see me when you have Defense Against the Dark Arts for your first lesson, Mr. Potter," Dumbledore said. "The password is Skittles."
The Slytherins had Herbology with the Ravenclaws, so Harry paired with a Ravenclaw of the name Terry Boot. The Ravenclaw had first stared at him, slightly cold and distant. But then his curiosity had gotten the better of him, and the boy asked, "Hey, Potter, I heard that you blew up your wand in Transfiguration."
Harry turned to him, "Yeah. So what?"
"So what?!" Boot repeated, wide eyed. "You blew up your wand! I mean, there have been explosions, but blowing up your own wand? What are you going to do for the rest of the school year?"
Harry smirked, "That is a secret." They now had the attention of several people in the greenhouse.
"Oh, come on, Potter, tell us!" a Ravenclaw urged, eyes alight with curiosity.
Harry turned his gaze onto him, "Why should I tell?"
"This is the first time someone's wand actually exploded! Are you going to get a new wand?"
Harry debated internally on whether or not he should tell. If he did, it would generate resentment and jealousy, but then they were still going to find out. "Well, apparently, my magic can not function with a wand."
"Wait, what? So, what are you going to do?"
"Does that mean you're a squib?"
Silence.
"Squib?" Harry laughed coldly, "No, definitely not a squib."
"Then what?" Boot demanded, eyes glinting.
Harry clipped off another piece of the plant, and said casually, "Professor Dumbledore is going to help me find my preferred type of wandless magic."
Another moment of silence. Harry sincerely did not know how his peers were going to react. He hoped this would not limit his possibilities of gaining alliances, but they were going to know in the end anyway.
The class erupted into chaos, each person voicing their disbelief. "Wandless magic, Potter? That's really unbelievable."
Harry only smirked.
"Hey, Harry, come on, let's get to Defense," Draco said, beckoning at Harry.
Said boy smiled, "Didn't I tell you I'm going to have lessons with Dumbledore?"
Draco's jaw dropped, "Wait, you weren't joking?"
Harry's eyes hardened, and Draco involuntarily took a fearful step back. "Did you think I was?" Harry challenged.
"A-ah, no," Draco forced out. Regaining his composure, he said calmly, "Well, then, have fun."
"I will, thanks," Harry said smoothly. He smirked as he turned to head towards the Headmaster's office.
"Skittles," Harry said, and watched as the gargoyles leapt aside for him. Ascending the stairs to the Headmaster's office, he wondered where the room could possibly be. A room that no one had ever stumbled upon?
"Professor Dumbledore?" he called out.
"Ah, yes, Mr. Potter," Dumbledore said pleasantly, "Just in time. Now, let us go introduce you to the four founders."
"Where could they be hidden, Professor? If it was any room in the castle, surely a student would have stumbled upon it?" Harry inquired politely, genuinely curious, as they walked along the hallways.
Dumbledore smiled genially, "Indeed, someone would have stumbled upon it, but the founders were clever when building this castle. They built a room that was named the Sanctuary of Hogwarts. It was for the protection of the students of Hogwarts."
"Where is it?"
"It is on the seventh floor, near Barnabas the Barmy," Dumbledore said.
"Uh, Professor? Are you sure this is the right place?" Harry said, staring around the empty corridor. He was beginning to think the man was barmy.
Dumbledore chuckled, "Yes, now, in order to get into the Sanctuary, you need to walk in front of that wall three times, thinking of what you need. And then a door will appear in front of you." He started to pace, "Now, I am thinking of seeing the four founders' portraits." He walked in front of a specific spot three times, and then to Harry's disbelief, a door miraculously appeared. Dumbledore chuckled again, and swung open the door, "Come along, Mr. Potter."
Harry hesitantly followed him into the room, eyes darting around, curious. His eyebrows rose, impressed by the magnificence of the room. "Wow, this is a great place for lessons!"
"Albus? Who is this?" a new voice asked.
Harry spun around, eyes wide as he saw the four portraits. The man on the right was blond haired and blue eyed and dressed in armor. Harry assumed he was Godric Gryffindor. The other man had hair so pale it was like white; Salazar Slytherin. Rowena Ravenclaw was the woman with midnight black hair and grey calculating eyes. Next to her was Hufflepuff, a sturdy looking woman with short blond hair and warm brown eyes.
Dumbledore smiled pleasantly, "This is Harry Potter, and his magic cannot function with a wand. I made the assumption that he could maybe use the magic that you used."
Slytherin scrutinized Harry, making him feel uneasy. "Yes, of course, we will see, Albus. You may go do whatever you need to do now," he said, still staring at Harry.
Dumbledore nodded, and headed towards the door. He looked back at Harry, "We'll see you at dinner, Mr. Potter."
Harry nodded respectfully, and Dumbledore exited. Turning to face the founders, he said, "So, are you from Earthland?"
Gryffindor leaned forward in his portrait, eyes gleaming and eager, "How is Earthland? Before we were transported to Earth, Zeref was still creating his Books. He was so obsessed with raising his dead brother from the dead…" He shook his head, "No one could talk sense into him. I guess that's what happens when you're immortal."
Harry narrowed his eyes, "Lord Zeref? You were from a time period where Lord Zeref was still alive?"
"Lord Zeref?" Slytherin said skeptically, raising an eyebrow. "When was he a lord?"
"Lord Zeref, the Black Wizard that created demons from hell. I'm part of a guild that wants to resurrect him. Grimoire Heart," Harry explained.
"Zeref can't be dead," Ravenclaw said, grey eyes cold and full of contempt at the name. "He was cursed to live forever."
Harry's eyebrows furrowed together, "But the last anyone's seen of him was four hundred years ago."
"Then he must be hiding or something," Ravenclaw concluded. "He was always great at hiding."
Harry nodded, "Then my guild and I will find him."
"Why?" Hufflepuff asked, slightly concerned.
"So he can help us create a World of Magic!" Harry said, preaching what Master Hades had taught him.
"Harry," Hufflepuff said softly, "Zeref does not want to live anymore."
Harry turned to look at her so rapidly that he nearly sprained his neck, "What?"
"You know his demon END?" Gryffindor asked.
"That is enough," Slytherin interrupted, declaring the conversation finished. "So, Harry, what magic do you use?"Harry smiled, "I practice Ice Make magic. And the Lost magic of the mind."
"Ah, yes, I remember Mind Magic. You must be very talented to be able to learn that. It came across as very difficult," Gryffindor said cheerfully.
Slytherin snorted, "You were just too thick headed to learn it. It was fairly straightforward for me to learn."
Harry turned to look at Slytherin with an expression of awe, "You learned Mind Magic as well? Could you teach me more of it, Mr. Slytherin? I only know the basics of it."
Ignoring Gryffindor's snicker, Slytherin addressed Harry, "Address me by Professor, Mr. Potter. And yes, as it was Albus's purpose for us to teach you, of course I'll help you with Mind Magic."
"You're so uptight, Salazar," Gryffindor said, grimacing. Turning to Harry, he said, "You can call me Godric. No need for formalities. Makes me feel old."
"Yes, because you have the mindset of a five year old," Slytherin drawled.
With a flash, Gryffindor was holding two swords, glowering, "You want to fight me?"
Slytherin glanced over lazily, "What fun would that be?"
"Boys! Enough!" Hufflepuff sighed exasperatedly.
Ravenclaw leaned forward, pointedly ignoring the two male founders, "Ice Make? We never had a magic called that. Is it a new Castor type magic?"
"Um, I guess it's more new?" he mused, "I'll just show you then." Right hand fisted and over his left hand, Harry directed his magic into a sword, "Ice Make Sword!" With a frozen breeze, a sword made of ice materialized in his hand.
"So, it's similar to Rowena's Memory Make, correct?" Gryffindor said excitedly, sword gone from his hand. Suddenly, he looked over to said woman, "Do you have any information you could share with him on your Archive?
Harry frowned, "Wait, so all of you have two Magics?" Memory Make and Archive, Harry mused silently, would be a formidable pair.
Slytherin shrugged, "Well, yes, they certainly were great advantages in fights, when our opponent does not know we have that type of magic."
"So, Professor Slytherin, you have Mind and Take Over?" Harry asked, mostly to himself, "And then Professor Ravenclaw has Memory Make and Archive. "What about Godric and Professor Hufflepuff?"
"You may call me Helga as well, Mr. Potter," Hufflepuff smiled warmly. "I have Plant Magic and Poison Magic."
Gryffindor grinned, "I have Requip and Metal Make. Makes it easier to form my armor."
"Wow…" Harry said softly, in awe of the Hogwarts Four. "All of your magics complement each other. That's awesome!"
"Yes, and you'll need another magic to complement either your Ice Make or your Mind Magic," Slytherin said sternly.
Harry nodded eagerly, "Water Magic would really go well with my Ice Make! I'm not too sure about what would help Mind…" He then looked to Ravenclaw, "But I really do want to find a way to get home… Professor Ravenclaw, do you know any magic to help me get back to Earthland?"
The four exchanged glances. Ravenclaw drew herself up, "Indeed, child, I do."
"May you teach me it?" Harry asked, leaning forward in anticipation.
Another exchanged glance. "Having too many magics will burden your mind and abilities," Ravenclaw warned. "It will not allow you to reach the fullest you would be able to with one or two magics. You will have to choose between a magic that will complement your current magics, or one that will bring you home and back. Four magics would be too much for a regular Earthland mage."
Harry deflated, but then he frowned, "But I originate from Earth. Would that affect how many magics I can learn?"
Ravenclaw's elegant eyebrows furrowed together as well. "I'm not too sure on how Earthland magic differs from Earthien magic, but you should still be careful of learning too many magics."
Harry deflated once more, debating over a magic that would either help him get home or strengthen one of his magics. Looking up, Harry said firmly, shoving away his desire to be even more powerful, "I want to learn how to get home."
