After the Christmas feast and we'd gathered up all our presents, it was time for Tony, Jenny and I to hit the road. We were now on the way to Stillwater to spend Christmas with Jackson and Tony was continually asking how much longer it was until we got there, that is until he fell asleep with about two hours left on the trip. Jenny and I were talking, telling each other about our favourite moments from the day when we finally arrived in Stillwater. Shaking myself as to not think of past memories we made our way down the familiar streets of my childhood town to the shop where I knew my father would be. Grabbing our bags out of the car as Jenny grabbed a sleeping Tony we made our way into the shop. I heard the familiar ring from the bell above the door and saw my father look up.
"Oh Leroy, its so good to see you. I didn't think you would make it" he said and I looked over to Jenny and Tony and he nodded in understanding. His eyes looking at Jenny and Tony for the first time.
"You truly are as beautiful as Jethro described you. It's a pleasure to finally meet you" dad said holding out his hand for Jenny to shake. She shuffled Tony a little, to free a hand so that she could shake my fathers hand but that jolt caused Tony to wake up.
"What? Where are we?" Tony asked and I smiled
"We're at my fathers place. Tony meet my dad Jackson Gibbs" I said and he beamed. Reaching out for a hug with my father who eagerly took him in his arms Jenny and I smiled, watching the scene before us unravel.
When both Tony and Jenny were yawning they took themselves off up to bed and I promised Tony that the carrots would be left out for the reindeer and the cookies and milk for Santa, which had pleased him to no end. Jenny who had had a long couple of weeks was tired and I'd told her earlier on that I would stay up late to put the presents under the tree for Tony when he got up, something that had taken a little bit of persuasion but had meant that she could rest. So as I sat up waiting to make sure that Tony was asleep and Jenny had headed off to bed my father and I sat there talking.
"How have you been?" he asked and I smiled
"For the first time in eight years I fell the happiest I have felt in a long time. I love Jenny and Tony both so much that I would be lost without them" I confessed and my father nodded
"I'm glad that you've moved on Leroy, glad that you haven't completely forgotten your girls but you found a way to make the two of them happy by finding two people just as sweet as them and a partner who understands you and why you are the way you are. For the most part anyway" he said and I nodded. It was true, even though it had been less than a year since this started I was happy and relieved that I had found someone who loved me for me, baggage and all, of course it helped that she had her own baggage as well but that wasn't what mattered. What mattered was the fact that I loved her and I loved Tony and I couldn't see my life without either of them in it. I could picture a future where the two of us would grow old and grey together, where we would watch Tony and any other child that we may or may not have; grow and find love.
"I plan on asking her to marry me Jack" I blurted out and he looked at me and smiled
"I'm pleased son, I have come to treasure my conversations over the phone with young Tony and the pleasant conversations with Jenny. I would be blessed to welcome them into the family. If there is anything I can do Leroy please let me know" he said and I nodded.
After that father headed off to bed as well and I was left to put the presents out under the tree, being left alone it gave me a chance to marvel at how my relationship with my father had changed over the last ten years. We'd gone from barely speaking unless it was to fight to ignoring each other, then hating each other and then coming together again over the last couple of years. And for the first time since the death of Shannon and Kelly I was going to celebrate Christmas with my father and the two new loves of my life.
The following morning I was woken not to the pleasant kisses that had almost become routine but to a rather loud and excited little boy who was jumping up and down on the bed, squealing
"Santa came! Santa came! Mummy, Jet you have to get up! Santa came!" and as I opened my eyes and looked up at Tony, I felt Jenny snuggle closer into my chest trying to catch as much sleep as she could.
"Mummy!" Tony whined and I smiled at him before reaching my hand to her sides and began tickling her. Which inevitably ended up with me clutching my side due to the punch she threw my way and Tony giggling with laughter as Jenny got up. With that we made our way downstairs and found that father was already up and waiting by the Christmas tree waiting for the three of us to join him. Tony ran over to him and gave him a cuddle wishing him a Merry Christmas before he sat himself down in the middle of the floor and Jenny and I curled up together on the couch. Father started handing out presents and as we sat there opening our presents, Tony sat there literally ripping the paper off and chucking it to the side, squealing in delight with each present before he'd place it to the side and start again. With all our presents put to the side we watched as Tony opened the last couple that he had to unwrap as Jenny took pictures using the new camera that my father had gotten her. She had been ecstatic with the present that I had gotten her and had said that we could do it soon as long as we could get someone to babysit Tony. I felt proud for getting her the trip to LA. Though she had grown up in America she had never travelled across the country to LA, she'd been outside the country and around the area for work but had never once been to LA.
After we'd finished opening presents Jenny made her way into the kitchen to make us breakfast something that both father and I had protested but she had told us that it was a special treat that she was making and with that we left her to it. I took Tony out to the back yard where I showed him around the workshop that I had grown up working in with my father and then I let him play on the playground that father had made for Kelly when she was the same age as Tony. That was where he found me as I was talking to Tony saying that he had to be careful as I didn't want him to hurt himself.
"Leroy, I wanted you to have this" dad said and I turned to him looking at him confused before he held out his hand and showed me the small black jewellery box. I opened the lid and gasped at the ring inside, it had been my mothers and I had marvelled at how beautiful it was and how delicate it had been, but looking up at my father and seeing the look in his eyes I knew that he had wanted me to pass this on to her. Pass it on to the love of my life. Feeling myself start to get a little emotional I threw my arms around my father and thanked him, pocketing the small box before pulling back and seeing the happy smile on my father's face.
"Thank you dad" I said and he smiled
"Your welcome Leroy" and he nodded before making his way back inside. Touching my pocket I smiled. Not only because he was letting me use my mothers' ring to propose to the women who had wormed her way into my broken heart and fixed it with her beautiful and loving nature as well as her charming little boy but I had also shared a special moment with my father that hadn't happened in years. We were called back inside a couple minutes later to a champagne breakfast and as I sat at the other end of the table with Jenny and Tony beside me and my father opposite me I smiled at him and he smiled back before we both dug in to our meals. For the first time in years this was the best Christmas I had ever had.
