Chapter 9: Urges
:-:
Beerus purred in content as Noreen ran her fingertips through the tuff of fur on his head.
The two young fairs were currently at their favorite spot on Barron's world – the garden. It'd been a ruthless few hours of circuits and drills, so Noreen decided it'd be best to give it a rest for the day's remainder.
"Are you sure I'm not moving to fast for you?" Noreen said, breaking the peaceful silence.
Beerus' left ear twitched. "Hm? No, not at all. I could go at a quicker pace if you're ready, though."
Noreen laughed. "Is that so? Exactly what are you implying, Beerus?" She said, and tickled a particular spot behind Beerus' left ear. The fair reacted, laughing out loud, trying to swat away the torturous digits that were poking behind his ear.
"Ah! Noreen, stop! Stop this instant! Haha!"
"What if I don't?" She challenged him, while she still relentlessly tickled the other.
Beerus managed to grab a hold of her clawed hand and then caught his breath. "I'll destroy you!"
"Oh, yeah?"
"Yeah!"
"Prove it." Noreen flew up in the air above them. "Go on, shoot." A smirk lay shameless on her lips.
"I will!" Beerus shouted, rather ticked at this point. He took a stance Noreen taught him for summoning any type of energy blast. An orange and purple light began to form in both hands. Noreen was having a great time until she noticed that he lacked the playful smile he usually possessed when they'd joke around like this. She then realized that he was serious about firing those blasts.
"Beerus, wait!" She shouted at the top of her lungs. Luckily, the blast was still small enough for her voice to get past the energy field it was creating. Almost instantly, the blasts dissipated, and Beerus had a look of slight bewilderment, along with an annoyed scowl.
"What?!"
There was a pause, and then…
"Beerus… what was that?"
The feline fair halted in thought to ponder what exactly did just happen. He looked up at her. Noreen had an expression that displayed a mixture of disappointment and… fear? Noreen afraid? Never in all the time he's spent here did she ever seem afraid of anything. Now that he's seen her afraid… he wasn't sure he liked that look on her.
"I… don't know." He said slowly, looking down at his hands. They were still warm from the energy he'd previously summoned.
Noreen's fearful expression turned to one of pure confusion. She flew back down to him, landing gracefully. She approached him with caution, as if he was radioactive or poison. Once she was sure he was calm, she placed a clawed hand on his shoulder, rubbing it to comfort him.
Beerus was in utter shock. One moment, he was resting his head comfortably in her lap, then the next; he was overcome with a great urge to destroy. And the weirdest part was, he actually felt like he meant to destroy her. The thought alone scared him. Although he may act stubborn around her at times, he'd never have the intention to inflict any kind of harm upon Noreen.
Noreen must have sensed his conflicting moods, because she was quick to embrace him, shushing quietly.
"If something's wrong, you can always count on me to make it right for you." She spoke softly. "What happened just now? Why did you loose control? It almost seemed like you… wanted to destroy me, or some other-"
"NO!" Beerus yelled, pushing away from her warm embrace. "No, no, no! NO!" He swished his head back and fourth at a rapid pace, denying that he'd ever destroy…
"Beerus?" Noreen whispered, afraid she'd say something else to set him off. What she didn't know was that Beerus was already set off.
"NO! I'd never, ever, ever destroy you, Noreen! I don't know what happened, and that's what scares me. It's like I had a sudden urge to destroy everything around me and beyond and I don't know where that urge came from. Even if you annoy me from time to time, I care for you. I was a fool in the beginning of our training. I was dodging all of your advances to try and make my time here better. I was a fool for not "letting loose" as you say, and just sitting back to relax every now and then. I was a fool for insulting you, for treating you poorly when I first met you. But know this right now. I will never. Ever. EVER. Destroy you, Noreen! I'd never do that! I-"
Noreen, while listening to all this, decided she'd heard enough. She closed the distance between them, embracing him once more. Beerus felt wetness on his shoulder. He pulled her back, and noticed she was crying. Why was she crying? It didn't matter. Though, seeing her face like that made a feeling well up inside him as well, and before they knew it, both embraced the other.
"I'm sorry." Beerus choked out. "I'm so, so sorry. I didn't want to scare you. I don't like seeing you scared. It makes me scared if you're scared, and I've never really felt so scared before."
Noreen was smiling. Everything Beerus had confess, all that he said – it triggered a sense of warmth inside her where fear previously laid.
"Beerus." She spoke in that soft voice that Beerus found so delightful to listen to. "Thank you. From now on, I'll make sure I don't do anything I may think will set you off. I'm so happy you feel that way." She pulled back, wiping his remaining tears away with her robe sleeve. "Everything will be ok, alright?" She took his hands in hers.
Beerus looked at their intertwined digits, then back to Noreens' golden gaze. "Promise?"
Her smile grew brighter. She leaned closer to place a chaste kiss on his nose. "Promise."
:-:
"That's when I was having my first destruction urges. After my training with her, Whis explained that it was normal for a future God of Destruction to have these urges as a fair." Beerus explained.
He and Goku were now sitting at one of Beerus' favorite spots out on the lake. Beerus hung upside down by his tail from a tree branch, while Goku sat comfortably against the trunk.
"So out of nowhere you just… had the need to destroy? Wow. Must have been tough."
Beerus laughed at the bittersweet memories. "Indeed they were. Just as much for me as it was for her."
Goku sighed. "I could imagine. It sounds like they came at random."
"Not exactly." Beerus cut in. "They began happening slowly at first – once about every two years. Then, I was experiencing them much more frequently. Sometimes they'd come at random if something set me off to the point of it coming, and other times we knew when to expect it."
Goku paused a moment, then laughed.
"And what might be so amusing?" Beerus quirked a brow.
The sayin's hands shot up in defense. "No, no. It's just… there's a lot more to being a destroyer god than I thought. It sounds like so much! I wouldn't wish that kind of power on my worst enemy."
"You wouldn't?"
"If what you're saying is anything to go by, than no way."
Beerus smirked. "I suppose your right. However, being a god has it's flaws and musings. There is a bright side to it."
Goku hummed in thought. "Really? What would that be like?"
"Well, for starters, you are helping to keep the universe in balance."
"Oh, yeah. King Kai said something like that to me when I was training with him before you came to his planet."
"Indeed."
"I don't really see how that would be considered a highlight so much as a neutral understanding of your title."
Beerus nodded. "It does feel like that from time to time. Noreen would always reassure me that before any creation must come destruction. However, she'd phrase it in a way that made me view my duty as something less monstrous."
"Yeah? What's that?"
Beerus closed his eyes, remembering a phrase that was lost to years and years of time. "She said – "You're not destroying, you're renewing. New elements depend on space to flourish, and that's the job of a destroyer god, to provide that space."
Goku thought about that. The way Noreen had phrased it seemed more sensible than to just destroy things for the sake of destroying them. He nodded to himself. "That does sound better than to just accept destruction for what it is."
"Agreed. She always had a way of making my duties to the universe seem less harsh."
"Yup. So… where is Noreen now?" Goku asked, eager to know.
Beerus' eyes snapped open, then squinted slightly. "I… don't know."
Goku realized what he may be implying, and immediately apologized. "Oh, I'm sorry. Did she… you know…"
"Pass on? No. Disappear is more like it. I haven't seen her since we were much younger, and still had much to learn."
"Ah. I see."
"Hopefully she returns. We have some… unfinished business to talk about."
"Unfinished business?"
"Yes." Beerus said, standing and stretching. "Lets just say that things weren't going smoothly when she vanished."
"So, it's more like closure?"
"Yes."
Goku stood, joining Beerus along the path that surrounded the lake. They walked at a leisurely pace.
"Aside from the bitter ending, Noreen sounds like she'd be a Kai rather than a god of destruction." He mused.
Beerus chuckled. "I couldn't agree more. She's such a bright minded being, always finding solutions to the most seemingly unsolvable problems."
"I'll bet. Were you still close friends when you left Barrons' world?"
"That…" Beerus stopped in his tracks. "…I shall save for next time." He yawned loudly. "I grow tired from all this recollection."
Goku nodded. "I'm feeling a bit drowsy myself." He laughed once more. "You weren't kidding. This is a long story."
"And you still wish for me to continue?"
"Of course! I hate cliffhangers."
"That makes two of us. Whis!" He called. The deity appeared instantaneously at the others call.
"Yes, Beerus. What is it?"
Yawning, Beerus asked his favor. "Would you be so kind as to fix up living quarters for our guest?"
Whis nodded. "Certainly. Right this way."
:-:
The room Goku was assigned to was almost identical to Beerus'. The only difference was that there was more furniture.
"I hope it's to your liking." Whis nodded, then left Beerus and Goku.
"You know, this isn't necessary." Goku laughed nervously, rubbing the back of his head.
Beerus held a hand up. "Nonsense. I'd feel like a terrible host. Besides, wouldn't you rather be comfortable during your stay?"
"Well, yeah. But this room is kind of…" Goku paused, giving the room a second glance. "…over done. Mine back home is pretty simple." He said, chuckling.
Beerus grinned. "Yes. Whis does tend to over do decorations. It's almost like a hobby to him of sorts."
"Seems like it." Goku yawned. "Who knew story telling could be so tiring."
Beerus caught the yawn, stretching his arms up. "Certainly not I until now." He lowered his arms, then took a step back so he was standing outside the room and in the hall. "I bid you good evening, Goku."
"Right back at ya." Goku said, moving forward to close the door.
Once shut, Goku turned to the large bed towards the back of the room. He pushed on it once to test its texture. It was very soft and plush. Goku dropped on the plush material, sighing. This was nothing like any other experience Goku had previously with the destroyer god, but he wasn't complaining. In fact, he was now more curious than ever to hear the gods story. Maybe after they were finished, Beerus would ask Goku if he wished to share his life adventures. If that happened, Goku would happily comply, knowing Beerus could get a good laugh out of some of his stories, especially ones including Bulma hitting him upside the head.
He was eager to hear more about Noreen. Hopefully Beerus would tell how strong she was as they grew up. If they crossed paths some how, Goku would definitely make it a priority to ask her for a battle, even if it was just for a minute. She sounded like Beerus' opposite in away, if the story was anything to go by. She was sweet, outgoing, and expressive. Beerus made it sound like, as a fair, he kept to himself and showed little to no emotion. Goku laughed to himself.
"Sounds like that's one thing Beerus and Vegeta had in common."
Sleep overtook him, despite all his burning questions that were hopefully going to get answered the next day.
A/N: Sry if this chapter seemed a bit rushed. I want to put something up to satisfy u guys before I do the bulky upload I have planned. I want to get all my ideas planned out, ya know.
