Duel 3: Spirit Bonds

Jaden Yuki flung his arm up to block the recoil from Elemental HERO Stratos being destroyed by the large and powerful Dragonic Knight.

"Listen up Jaden!" declared Chazz, his opponent. "You don't have what it takes!" He then pointed to himself. "I Chazz Princeton will be the next Duel King!"

The crowd cheered for Chazz, as the extra curricular duel went on. It was a match between the Slifer Red that had defeated Dr. Crowler, and the Junior Champion who had never lost since he came to the academy.

Chazz had the powerful Dragonic Knight on his field, while Jaden had Ocean and a single face down card. The two rivals stared at each other.

Jaden: 3000

Chazz: 4000

Dragonic Knight: Attack 2800

Elemental HERO Ocean: Attack 1500

Jaden smirked at his opponent. "You're good Chazz," he complimented as he taped a button on his disk. "True to your reputation. But by destroying my monster you activated my trap card! Go, Hero Signal! Now I get to special summon a monster level four or below from my deck!" A card slipped out of his deck and he plucked it out and slapped it onto his disk. "I call on the Elemental HERO Woodsman!"

The ground began to shake and a man composed of wood, like his name, burst from the ground and took a fighting stance.

Elemental HERO Woodsman: Attack 1000

Chazz narrowed his eyes at the new monsters. "What are those lame monsters going to do?" he mocked as he slid a card into his disk. "I'll lay a card face down and finish up!"

He wasn't fazed by Jaden's trap, but he knew exactly what Woodsman and Ocean added up to. 'If I'm correct,' he thought. 'I'm about to face a Planet Card.'

Turn 3: Jaden

"Here I go!" cried Jaden as he drew. He smirked at his card and slid it into his disk immediately. "Get ready to meet my HERO combo! I fuse Woodsman with Ocean and summon the Elemental HERO Terra Firma!"

Jaden's two HERO monsters began to fuse together, creating a crimson energy ball. And from it burst a white armored knight with blue gems on his shoulders and head and a red one on his chest.

Elemental HERO Terra Firma: Attack 2500

Chazz scowled at the sight. 'I knew it,' he thought.

"And now I'll activate another spell card!" continued Jaden. "Go, Premature Burial! With this, I resurrect Stratos from the graveyard at the cost of eight hundred life points!"

Elemental HERO Stratos: Attack 1800

The armored winged HERO remerged onto the field and took stand next to Terra Firma.

Jaden: 3000-2200

Chazz spat, "So what? Neither of your pathetic monsters are a match for Dragonic Knight even though Terra Firma is a Planet Card!"

Jaden grinned in reply. "You think so huh?" he answered. "Let's just see what my pathetic monsters can do!" Jaden threw his arm out to the side as he declared, "I activate Terra Firma's special ability!"

Chazz's eyes widened in shock. "What!" he gasped.

"By sacrificing Stratos!" explained Jaden. "I can increase Terra Firma's attack and defense by my sacrificed hero's attack points!"

Stratos then flew into Terra Firma and vanished while the Planet Card's white armor turned into a light red colour. He then pulled two handles from his belt and red magma energy burst from them and created blades.

Elemental HERO Terra Firma: Attack 2500-4300 Defense 2000-2300

Jaden fist pumped the air as he shouted in triumph, "This is Terra Firma Magma Mode!"

'Magma Mode!' panicked Chazz in his mind.

"Now go Terra Firma!" Jaden ordered. "Destroy Dragonic Knight with Magma Slash!"

The mighty Planet Card charged forward and used its magma swords to slash apart the opposing monsters.

Chazz threw his arm up to his face to block the recoil from the attack.

Chazz: 4000-2500

The crowd began to cheer for Jaden.

"Awesome!"

"Jaden's unstoppable!"

"Chazz just got whipped!"

"Now it's all on you Chazz," mused Jaden. "Turn en-"

"Not yet Jaden!" interrupted Chazz as he taped a button on his disk. "You see, because this is your end phase I get to play the trap Reverse-Time!"

Jaden gasped as a time vortex appeared on the field and swept up and destroyed his Planet Card.

"No!" shouted Jaden. "My Terra Firma!"

"My trap's effect!" explained Chazz. "Reverts the field's monsters to how they were at the start of the turn! Since Terra Firma didn't exist at the time, it goes back to your extra deck while our destroyed monsters rise once again!"

As the time vortex ended, it left Dragonic Knight and the Elemental HERO monsters Woodsman and Ocean.

Dragonic Knight: Attack 2800

Elemental HERO Woodsman: Attack 1000

Elemental HERO Ocean: Attack 1500

"Crud!" was the only thing Jaden could say as he starred down Dragonic Knight.

Turn 4: Chazz

"Now it's my turn!" roared Chazz as he ripped a card from his deck and subsequently slapped in onto his disk. "I call upon the Blackland Fire Dragon in attack mode!"

Blackland Fire Dragon: Attack 1500

A green ferocious dragon emerged on he field and roared.

Jaden gulped when he realized what was happening.

"Blackland Fire Dragon burn up Woodsman!" commanded Chazz. "And Dragonic Knight, annihilate Ocean!"

Blackland roared and unleashed a stream of flames that incinerated Woodsman while Dragonic Knight used its sword to hack Ocean to pieces.

Jaden groaned as his monsters were destroyed and his life points dropped. He looked at Chazz and thought, 'He's strong.'

Jaden: 2200-0400

"It's all back on Jaden," a boy from the crowd stated.

"Only 400 life points left," noted a girl next to him. "Jaden's toast."

"Don't you get it Jaden," commented Chazz to his opponent. "You, someone of your kind, can never beat me."

Jaden raised an eyebrow. 'My kind?' he thought in confusion.

Chazz looked down at his deck while continuing. "For a duelist, cards are only tools to do battle! Duelist fight with their own strength!"

'Yes,' the dragon duelist thought. 'That's why I can't battle with him.'

Chazz looked up at Jaden with a fierce stare. "And now I'm fighting a loser who treats cards like some kind of soul mate! You will not win!"

Jaden replied calmly, "You forget Chazz. If a duelist stops feeling something for their cards then it's all over."

Chazz laughed and retorted, "Cards are merely weapons. Who gets all sentimental over battle gear? You're such a baby."

Chazz's expression then became serious again. 'You don't know Jaden,' he thought. 'You have no understanding of the suffering of the chosen duelist. Whether to continue on the path with a spirit, or to stand alone with my own strength.'

The Junior Champion then proceeded to point at Jaden. "Because you think cards are somewhat special, let's see what your 'spirit partner' can do! Things will be decided on my turn!" he challenged.

Turn 5: Jaden

"My turn," said Jaden calmly as he slowly drew his card, Pot of Greed and looked at it. That was when he heard a small cry from his deck and Jaden smiled.

'There you are buddy,' he thought before sliding a card into his disk.

"I play Pot of Greed!" he declared as he drew two cards. "Now I get to pick up twice!"

He grinned at one of his new cards as he held the backing up for his opponent to see.

"Chazz!" cried Jaden. "I about time I show you what you were waiting for!"

Chazz simply laughed in response. "Bring on your pointless resistance loser!" he loafed.

"First I set a card face down!" shouted Jaden, sliding a card into his disk. "Now I summon Winged Kuriboh in attack mode!"

A brown puffball with white wings emerged onto the field and gave a battle cry.

Winged Kuriboh: Attack 300

Chazz gasped and thought, 'Winged Kuriboh in attack mode?'

"It's all about connecting with your card," stated Jaden. "Have faith in your cards and you never battle alone."

"You total losers!" Chazz snapped. "Cards are just tools! Weapons to make duelists stronger! I'm going to wipe out you and your pathetic monster!"

Turn 6: Chazz

Jaden went to protest, but Chazz cut him off as he drew his card. "Draw! Dragonic Knight, time to take out the trash!"

The large armored dragon lunged forward with its sword raised, ready to attack Kuriboh.

"My partner is not trash!" exclaimed Jaden. "We fight together and that makes us invincible!" he tapped a card on his disk and roared, "I activate a facedown spell Transcendent Wings! Now by sending two cards from my hand to the graveyard, I can evolve Winged Kuriboh to level 10!"

Chazz gasped as Kuriboh let out a blinding light and evolved into a much more powerful form. This Kuriboh had much larger wings, a tail and wore a golden dragon crown.

Winged Kuriboh LV10: Attack 300

'Level 10!' panicked Chazz in thought.

"Now show them your enhanced power buddy!" cheered Jaden. "During my opponent's battle phase, LV10 can sacrifice itself to destroy all enemy monsters in attack mode! In addition, those destroyed opposing monsters have their attacks deflected back onto my opponent as damage!"

Chazz let out a scream of horror as Winged Kuriboh LV10 let out a shining blast that obliterated his Dragonic Knight and ended the duel.

Chazz: 2500-0000

Winner: Jaden

Jaden fist pumped the air in triumph. "You know what Chazz?" he declared. "I think this duel just brought my duelist level up a notch!"

Chazz simply fell to his knees in defeat and lowered his head. 'I lost…' was the only thing going through his mind.

That was when a blinding light came from behind him in the direction of the dorms.

He turned his head to see a shining dragon up in the sky. Jaden was the only other person who could see it too.

'What's going on?' questioned Jaden in thought.

'You were watching me,' thought Chazz in reference to what he had just saw. And just like that, the Dragon then vanished.

"Way to go Bro," encouraged Syrus as he approached Jaden. "You broke Chazz's winning streak."

Jaden smiled and nodded. "Yeah, guess I did." He then watched as Chazz walked away.

'What was that I saw for a moment?' the Slifer Red thought. 'A dragon?'

Meanwhile, Chazz had walked back to the place where he had buried his spirit card and looked at the stick rising from the ground.

The Obelisk Blue then kneeled down and punched the dirt around it.

'What was it he said back there?' thought Chazz. 'About connecting with your card?'

"It's all about connecting with your card," stated Jaden. "Have faith in your cards and you never battle alone."

Chazz grabbed the stick signaling where his card lay buried and began to use it dig up the dirt in front of him.

'I never stopped trusting you,' he thought. 'But my pride came between us. It was all a fear of failure. I was afraid of getting to the academy and actually losing.'

Finally, when enough dirt had been removed, he was able to pick up the wooden box from the hole and open it. He pulled out the card and held it up.

"Will you battle with me again Light and Darkness?" asked Chazz as a large dragon, half white an angelic wing and half black with a demonic wing appeared behind him.

To Be Continued: Next Time – Bastion the Analyst!

Bastion Misawa is annoyed that Jaden of all people has Alexis' phone number. And worse, he beat Chazz before he could. Now, Bastion challenges Jaden to a duel to win Alexis' phone number from him. If Jaden wins, he gets Bastion's ultra rare Duelist Kingdom DVD. It's flaming monsters versus Heroes! Can Bastion prove himself better, or will he fall victim to Jaden's uncanny draw?
