Chapter 18
House entered his little patient's room, who looked up at him frightened. House looked around the room and said "Where's your little friend?".
"...She...isn't here".
"I see. You're not very smart, right?" House sat on a chair, pulling out his PSP and leaving his cane on the floor, pulling out a lollipop from his pocket soon after.
Edward stared at him, his eyes focused on the lollipop. House grinned without taking his eyes off the console.
"Can I have one too?" Edward asked.
"No, I need the vitamins, you should eat...Let's see, some brain or some liver".
"Fortunately, there are other ways to take some B1 vitamin".
House looked up and saw Cameron next to Edward, checking his IV. He rose from his chair as the kid leaned forward to stare at his shoes.
"I have them too!".
"So that's why she likes both of us. Come out when you're done" House stepped outside, leaning against the wall facing the room, turning the lollipop in his mouth. Another kid, a little girl in the next room, was watching him, smiling. He rolled his eyes, annoyed, moving away and sitting on a chair nearby, next to a man looking very tired.
"It's inconceivable the idea that our children are on those beds..." the man said.
House thought for a moment "Yeah...".
The man nodded "I have two daughters, one has been here for a week".
"I've got two boys and a girl, you don't know how many problems they give me...Especially the girl".
The man smiled.
"House?" Cameron said, looking at him in surprise. He rolled his eyes and turned to the man "Ah! Here is the girl" House walked away, followed by her, leaving the man there, confused.
"So, what did you see?".
Cameron took a breath, knowing that the 'I told you so' was inevitable "An enlargement of the heart's walls".
House paused, turning to her in faked shock, his hand over his mouth "But, but, it can't be! I mean, maybe it's because I'm a hypersensitive man, but I thought that cuddling the kid all day could prevent the swelling of the heart! Why these things happen? Why? !" House shook his head in despair as she sighed in exasperation "Good! Now, I won't repeat myself and say that I'm a genius and you are not, it wouldn't make sense, therefore, let's do that biopsy" House said and walked away after having spotted Wilson laughing with a nurse.
She followed him "They will never give you the consent".
"You don't have any bit of faith in me, aren't you?".
"A biopsy is risky as today as yesterday".
"I dind't tell you to give him a heart attack and then to perform a biopsy. That's insane! Wilson, wait for me!".
Wilson stopped the elevator's doors, waiting for the diagnostician to get in.
"What do you think I should tell his parents?" Cameron asked.
"I don't know, why do you think I leave it up to you to answer my emails?".
The doors closed while Cameron looked annoyed at House, who was grinning.
Wilson stared at House, who was watching the elevator's buttons panel "You won't never get the papaya this way".
"I've never said I wanted to get it" he murmured.
Before Wilson could answer, Cuddy got in the elevator. House stared at her neckling and Wilson elbowed him.
"Guys" Cuddy greeted them.
"Isn't there a policy about the length of the necklines here?" House asked.
"We are not in a barracks" Cuddy answered, sighing.
"Then why I'm not free to take my pills?".
"Because you're an employee here and you're an addicted, and because this is the only way to keep Tritter away from my archives".
"You want to eat the chocolate pudding forever, right?" Wilson murmured.
"I must tell you, I'm a creature of habit" House answered.
Cuddy turned to Wilson, who looked away while House whispered in her ear "Keep an eye on him lately, he says strange things" then he moved away and declared "Well, my dears, that's me" and he stepped out of the elevator, but Wilson and Cuddy followed him too.
"Not tasting that pudding may be one thing you will regret someday" Wilson said loudly.
Cuddy turned back to Wilson, puzzled, while House stared at him with a smirk.
"I mean, take the lollipops for instance" he continued.
"I love the strawberry ones" House said.
"Yes but, every now and then, trying new things can be good too".
Cuddy approached Wilson, arms crossed. Wilson smiled at her and then turned back to House.
"I mean, you won't eat only strawberry lollipops for the rest of your life, right?" Wilson asked.
"Hmm, yes".
"Wilson, are you really trying to have a conversation about lollipops and puddings with House?" Cuddy asked.
"I mean, I'm not the only one who finds this conversation strange, am I?" House asked.
"I still have to figure out If you're really speaking of food or something else but, to be honest, I don't care right now" and so Cuddy walked away.
House smirked at his friend, munching on his lollipop. Wilson smiled back.
"Do whatever you want...I just gave you my advice" Wilson said, sighing, and walked toward his office.
"I'll think about it" House said while his friend had his hand on the doorknob, and then limped away.
Before he could go too far, Wilson said "Sometimes, only sometimes, it's better to act and not think too much" and then he went inside his office.
House stayed on the spot for a few seconds, smirking soon after.
