"What's happened?" asks Sophia in a panic
"Your—Your awake. It's a miracle. Everyone had about given up. The surgeon was going to operate on your brain as a last resort."
"What are you talking about? Why?"
"Sophia you fell down the stairs. You've been in a coma this is the third day now. I was going to try to feed you."
"By shoving a tube down my throat! You could have killed me."
"I didn't know what else to do Sophia I really didn't want to see you die."
Finnian looks so saddened.
"Where is everyone?"
"At the party downstairs."
"Their having a party!"
"Sophia no one thought you would make it, and its Sebastian's birthday today."
"Sebastian is back?"
"Well yes."
Sophia is so happy that she could cry.
"I need to see him."
She hops out of bed.
"Hold on the doctor should examine you first."
"I don't care about the doctor I need to see Sebastian right now!"
Finnian looks down at his shoes.
"I don't know if that's a good idea."
"Why not?"
"Like I said no one thought you would make it."
"So! I'm alive now."
Sophia goes to pass Finnian to get to the door.
"He's with someone...else."
"What?"
Sophia freezes in mid step.
"Yeah. He's with Mey-Rin now."
Finnian doesn't seem to want to make eye contact.
"Your lying."
"I'm not Sophia."
"No...no. I don't believe you!"
The pain in Sophia's right arm circulates now that she's on her feet. It's so painful that she can't even lift it to twist the doorknob.
"What the hell's wrong with my arm? It hurts so bad."
"That's why you should see the doctor. You did fall down the stairs. It could be broken."
Sophia keeps the arm by her side but it still continues have an almost unbearable pain. She uses her left hand to turn the knob and open the door. She goes down the hall leaving Finnian standing in her room holding the tray. She still remembers the layout of the house. She makes it downstairs but a bit slower than usual due to her stiff muscles and the constant pain in her right arm. The dining room table has already been cleared. The music is coming from another room. Sophia follows the tune into the ballroom. She stops short in the doorway. Ciel is dancing with a girl with golden blonde hair that is hanging at her waist while Sebastian is dancing with Mey-Rin. Sophia can't believe her eyes, her heart feels as if it's in her throat. How could this be real? No one has noticed her yet so both couples continue dancing. Baldroy is near the far end of the ballroom setting up a buffet style meal on a long table. Sophia stands in the doorway with both eyes wide until the song ends. She is first noticed by Mey-Rin. Mey-Rin looks at Sophia with equal shock.
"You're alive?"
Sophia just stares back without responding. Ciel sees her as well.
"Good evening Sophia." he says
He doesn't part from his female dance partner, appear surprised, or joyful. Sophia looks into Sebastian's eyes. He seems like his normal self.
"How could you?" she whispers
"Today is Sebastian's birthday. We have an announcement to make." says Mey-Rin eying Sophia.
"Yes. We are engaged." says Sebastian
Sophia's life came crashing down at that moment.
"It's only been three days!" she screams
"Correct but Mey-Rin and I have worked side by side for quite some time." says Sebastian calmly.
"You're crazy! You're insane!" yells Sophia
Tears begin to form in her eyes.
"You're all insane! This—is...you should change the name of this estate to the Phantomhive Asylum!"
"I suggest you lower your voice." says Ciel as he glares at Sophia.
Baldroy rushes up to Sophia and puts his hands on both her shoulders in an effort to calm her. She winces in pain after he touches her right shoulder.
"Are you hurt?" he asks
"My arm hurts a lot."
"We'll call the doctor."
Sophia feels the urge to yell at Baldroy too but the look of genuine concern on his face stops her. She tries to peer past him at Sebastian. Mey-Rin smiles at Sophia when she looks.
"I hope your happy Mey-Rin. He'll just toss you away then you'll see how it feels."
Mey-Rin's expression doesn't change.
"He's mine right now and forever." she says
She holds out her hand to show Sophia her emerald engagement ring.
Sophia has to hold back to keep from screaming. She was going to have a total meltdown. Baldroy quickly ushers her out of the room.
"I'll take you back upstairs to wait for the doctor." he says
"Oh Baldroy. I'm so sorry."
Sophia holds her head down so that Baldroy can't see her face as they walk side by side. She can't hold back all of her tears but she tries like hell. A few tears manage to escape and slide down her face before she quickly wipes them away.
"Why are you sorry Sophia? You haven't done anything wrong."
"You were such a nice guy all along and I didn't pay any attention to you. I'm sorry."
"Sophia your fine."
He smiles at her, and gives a reassuring nod.
Sophia can't help but feel a little afraid. Did Sebastian know about what happened between her and Claude? Maybe he did and was angry at her. It still was too much to think he would try to marry Mey-Rin because of it or maybe it wasn't.
Sophia makes it back to her room with Baldroy, Finnan is no longer there. Even he had tried to spare her some pain a few minutes earlier by telling her. He and Baldroy had always been kind. Sophia feels guilt for looking down on them after she first arrived. Sebastian obviously got all that he wanted from her and now he was done. Either that or Mey-Rin could have given him her soul while Sophia was in a coma.
Sophia drops down on her bed. She can't find a comfortable position for her arm while sitting on the edge of the bed.
"Try to relax. I will go call for the doctor."
"I thought you didn't have a phone."
"No we do."
"Oh."
"I'll be right back okay."
"Yeah."
Sophia sits quietly for a few minutes after Baldroy leaves. She stands up and goes over to the window and parts the curtains. There's a crescent moon in the sky. Sophia opens the window careful with her good arm, climbs up, and stands on the window sill. She looks down at the ground below then up to the sky again.
"Where's the push now?" she says aloud.
"Go right ahead. Jump to your death I'll wait."
Sophia turns around startled by the voice, gripping the corners of the window tightly so as not to fall.
