Hey guys! So I am finally back with an update after God knows how long and I hope this chapter is good. However, I must warn you all that this chapter is no fluff piece. It is all angst.
Trigger Warning: Miscarriage (yes I'm spoiling it, but I don't want you lovelies going in blindly)
Nevertheless, enjoy and hopefully I'll see you at the bottom!
As they got settled into Klaus's bedchambers, Caroline didn't look at him nor did she speak to him once.
She wanted to go back to her family, but she also wanted to protect her child and that protection would come under the prince's rule. However, the blonde couldn't help but feel betrayed. She knew that what they had was a short affair that wasn't going to go anywhere… Nevertheless, she was hurt. With a sigh, she looked over at the bed where they have made love for the first time and shook her head.
"Made love? She asked herself with a silent scoff. What they had done was the joining of bodies, plain and simple.
She was there and he had wanted her and she had wanted him. What they did together stemmed from lust, not love…
"Do you intend to ignore me then?" He asked as he watched her with a lazy look on his golden face.
"No," she said even though she desperately wanted to. "I don't see how that is possible considering that I have to live with you now."
"You're carrying my child, love. Of course you'll have to live with me."
"And if I don't want too?" She questioned, challenging him. "Will you force me?"
A dark look flashed over his eyes and he narrowed his eyes at her.
"I didn't force you into anything, Caroline. What we did was consensual and you know it."
"I do," she shrugged. "However, it doesn't mean that I do not regret it."
"It's too late for regret, isn't it? You are carrying my child which means that you shall be under my protection."
Caroline sighed and placed her hand on her still flat belly.
She silently told her baby that she would love him or her no matter what happened.
Before Klaus could say anything else, there was a knock on his door and he answered it. His younger brother Kol stood there with his arms crossed over his chest.
"Father is asking for you… Your betrothed has arrived as did her parents." Kol announced, not knowing that Caroline was in the room.
With a gasp, Caroline placed her hand over her mouth and stared at the prince. She had heard that he was promised to another, but she always thought that it was a rumor that was started out of boredom.
Klaus quickly nodded before he shut the door and turned to face her.
"You are getting married." Caroline said, her voice flat.
"Yes I am," he responded, not seeing the point in lying. After all, his wedding was set to be at the end of the month. Also, he highly doubted that his father would allow him to jilt his bride at the altar. "I thought you knew."
"I- I always assumed it wasn't true." She confessed.
"Well it is. I shall be a married man by the end of of the month."
She approached him and narrowed her eyes at him.
"Even when you knew you were to marry, you forced me to come with you? How is that supposed to work. Shall I share the bedchamber with you and your wife?"
"Don't be ridiculous," he scoffed. "My betrothed and I are marrying because it will benefit both of our families. I don't expect to keep her in my bed."
"You'll have to consummate your marriage." Caroline stated as she watched him with confusion in her bright blue eyes.
"And I will. Perhaps I'll even get an heir on her, but that'll be the end of it." He responded with a shrug.
"How can you speak like this? What you're telling me is that I am to be your other woman. How do you think that makes me feel?" She asked as she felt tears gathering in her eyes. She couldn't believe how much her life has spun out of her control. Whatever did she do to deserve such a fate? She was carrying an Egyptian's child and she felt it in her heart that she loved the prince no matter how horrible he was.
"Look, love. Our relationship was doomed from the start. You're an Israelite and I am apart of the Egyptian royal family. What we had was fun while it lasted and I'll take care of our child, but he'll be known as a bastard."
"A bastard?" She asked as a sharp pain gathered in her abdomen.
She moved back towards the bed and sat down because she was unable to hold herself upright.
Another sharp pain gathered in her abdomen and she cried out, unable to hold the scream in.
"What the bloody hell?" He asked, the confusion evident in his voice as he moved towards her and reached for her.
"Don't touch me." She said as she shook her head. "I cannot be- ahh- bear it." She cried out as another pain gathered in her belly.
Looking down at the skirt of her dress she saw blood and looked at the prince with confusion in her eyes.
"What's happening to me? What's going on? There's blood. Why is there blood?"
She asked as her voice began to tremble.
"Oh my," Klaus said as he ran out of the bedchamber and called for Rebekah.
Rebekah met him halfway and looked at him with confusion on her face. Her hair was unkempt and it looked as though she had just woken up.
"What's going on?" She asked as she rubbed her eyes.
"Ca- Caroline. Something's wrong. I don't know what."
"Caroline?" She asked as her eyes widened and she made a run for Klaus's bedchamber.
When she entered the bedchamber, she saw Caroline's skirt covered in blood and her face blanched.
"Caroline?" Rebekah asked as she approached her. "What's happening?"
"I- I don't know. The baby. Oh god, the baby!" Caroline cried out as tears began to fall from her eyes. She began hyperventilating and was unable to get herself under control.
"Baby? What baby?" Rebekah asked, but neither Klaus not Caroline answered.
"Bekah, call for the family physician. Caroline needs help. Something is happening and I don't know what to do." Klaus said as he watched the love of his life slipping away. Her face was pale and she was slowly beginning to lose consciousness.
"Of course." Rebekah said before she made a run for it.
Klaus approached Caroline and she shook her head.
"Stay away from me." She begged as she began to tremble.
"Caroline, I'm sorry. I love you. Please, I'm sorry!" Klaus shouted as she drifted into oblivion.
Caroline heard a voice and her eyes slowly drifted open. It felt as though there was sandpaper in her eyes and she couldn't understand why.
Surely there wasn't a dust storm? She wondered curiously.
"You are finally awake, Miss." A man's voice said and she forced herself to focus on him.
He was a man of small stature and he was spectacles.
"What happened?" She asked and then the memories began to rush back to her.
"My baby. Is my baby okay?" She asked in alarm putting her hand on her belly.
"Er, I do not know how to tell you this, but there is no baby anymore."
"What?" She asked, not understanding his words.
"You had a miscarriage, Miss. The baby is gone."
"Gone? Gone where?"
"Just gone." He said. "I am sorry for your loss, but many times this happens in the beginning. And you were only about three weeks along which is a very dangerous period of time."
"So there is no baby?" She asked as her heart began to break and a sob escaped her lips.
"I'm sorry," the physician said before he excused himself and left the blonde alone.
When the door closed behind the physician, a cry escaped her lips and the tears began to fall quickly.
She turned on her side and cradled her belly. Just an hour ago, she carried a life under her heart and now she felt absolutely empty for lack of a better word.
Caroline admitted to herself that she looked forward to having a child that she could call her own, but then she remembered how the prince had called their baby a bastard. A bastard… Her baby would have been a bastard and even if she had married one of her own, her child would have suffered the same fate as her. Him or her would have been a slave and treated as though they weren't worth anything. If she were to have a baby boy, he would have grown up to be whipped whenever he did something incorrectly. And if she would have had a baby girl, her little girl would have grown up to be a source of amusement and release for the guards and the royal family.
At that moment, Caroline hated to admit it, but in a way she was relieved and also finally understood that she would never bring a child into this awful world. God had placed her on this planet and she would suffer it herself.
Right now, however, she needed to grieve and that is what she was going to do…
Klaus stood outside his bedchamber and listened to Caroline's sobs. He could picture her lying in his bed with her knees gathered against her chest and her hands over her eyes and that broke his heart.
He had been the worst type of scoundrel towards her and now it was too late.
The child that they had made together was no more and he knew for certain that she hated him and would never forgive him for his part in it.
He had pushed her over the edge. He knew that though she hadn't wanted to live with him, she was happy about it on one hand. After all, the love he had for her had to have been returned, right?
With a shake of his head, he wondered how it is that his life he spun so out of control. How could this have happened? Just a little over a month ago he was going about his royal duties and then he had seen her. After that he was never the same and instead of reaching for what he shared with her with two hands, he pushed her away. He had pushed her away because he wasn't strong enough to go up against his father. He had pushed her away because he thought that there was no way for them to have a happy ending. And now where was he? He was standing outside of his bedchamber and listening to her cries of sorrow.
"How is she?" Rebekah asked, bringing him out of his reverie.
"Broken-hearted." Klaus simply replied. "I did that to her, Bekah. Me… It's all my fault."
"It is," she said bluntly. "You should have known better. You shouldn't have slept with her, Klaus. She is damaged goods now and I don't know if she'll ever be able to get back to the woman she was before she lost the baby- your baby."
"I know." Klaus sighed as he put his face in his hands.
"How could I ever look her in the eye now?"
"Don't," Rebekah said as she put her hand on his shoulder. "Let her go, Nik."
"B- but I love her." He confessed, realizing that it was true.
"Then let her go." She repeated. "Do not take her life away from her. It wouldn't be fair and you are getting married in a month's time, brother."
"I don't want too."
"It is a little too late for that now. You should have said something when you had the chance, but now you're stuck."
"I know," he sighed. "I don't think she wishes a to see me ever again. Will you speak to her? And have the guards escort her back to her family?"
"Of course." She nodded. "I'll take care of everything, but you need to go. Your bride awaits." She said sarcastically.
With a shake of his head, Klaus walked away from his younger sister and away from Caroline… Forever.
There you have it, my dears! So, Caroline lost the baby and trust me I wasn't going to go this way, but then I thought about it and thought it would be best. Now, I do not know whether to continue or whether to make this a tale through the centuries… Please let me know what you would like to see and if you want me to get out of this time period, I'd be more than happy to somehow move into about the 19th century. Maybe have Klaus and Caroline be reborn and then meet in Regency London. Perhaps this time, I'll have Caroline be the one from the aristocracy, but I don't know. Please let me know what you want to see! If you want me to continue in this time period then I will.
