Author's note: Okay. Well. I realize only now, I really didn't think the beginning through. I had forgotten about the whole 'Hey, Leon's guarding the president!' thing, so... This will practically be as if it were before all that, which I'm sure isn't the case.
I digress. I'll come back to this eventually to try and fix it up, but for now... I've been sitting here, trying to think of other beginnings, but none would come. So, rather than wasting all my time thinking and praying for something to come up, I'll just... Well, put this up, and change it later if something good comes to me. I'll let you all know if I do in fact end up doing that, though.
Well... Disclaimation, ACTIVATE. I don't own Resident Evil, or anything affiliated with it. All I'll own is my original character, and any creatures I may end up making up. I already know there'll be one new one, but... I won't reveal anything on that just yet. Without any further ado, I shall begin the chapter!
A tall, dirty-blond man stood behind a large oak desk, leaning slightly against the wall behind him. His arms were crossed slightly, giving off a small hint of impatience. However, his calm demeanor gave nothing else away. His gray-blue eyes surveyed the door, waiting for someone, or something, to make their way inside.
Finally, a soft clicking noise could be heard as the doorknob began to turn. The man straightened his posture as the door opened. "About time, huh?"
No response came until a reddish-brown haired woman became fully visible, a questioning look on her face. "What exactly do you mean by that, Leon? Were you expecting me?" The blond man arched an eyebrow, seemingly curious himself now. She wasn't who he had expected at all, actually.
"Nothing, Claire. I thought you were the rookie." He explained with a somewhat casual shrug of the shoulders. Claire smiled a little, nodding at his answer. "The one you were asked to take on that investigation, right? Well, lucky you, I've been asked to help out. You won't be the only one who has to keep an eye on her." She said with a teasing tone to her voice.
"Yeah, lucky me. Two girls I'll have to watch out for. ...I was making a joke." He gave the smallest hint of a chuckle, but Claire couldn't help but note that with his normal monotone of a voice, it didn't seem like he was joking at all. Before she could come up with a worthy retort, however, there was a crash against the door.
Leon and Claire didn't even look at the door, instead looking at each other in silence for a short moment. Finally, Claire spoke up. "The rookie?"
"The rookie."
There was a soft laugh from behind the wooden door, before the knob turned and a young female entered the room. It was quite obvious by just her laugh how awkward she felt at the moment. Of course... She had just crashed into a door, on top of being quite late.
However, when she laid eyes on the two in front of her, she stood at perfect attention and tried to muster as much dignity as she possibly could. Though, it was obvious by her bright eyes just how excited she was to be going on her first assignment, especially with these two. She had heard rumors about them, about something that had gone on a while before this day, though it currently slipped her mind.
Her attempt at dignity, however, did not go unnoticed, and Leon glanced down at a paper on the desk in front of him. "Heather Lauren Hall... Right?"
"Yes, sir." Her voice was strong, but definitely did have that slight, shaky quality to it. Despite her attempt at showing bravery, her nerves were getting to her. She was just a rookie, after all; hopefully she'd be able to contain herself during the course of the actual mission.
"Has anyone already given you details, Heather?" This time, it was Claire who spoke. Her lighter voice was definitely more gentle than the monotone of Leon, Heather had realized. Though, she considered herself lucky to even remember their names right now, with how she felt. She shook her head after her brief thoughts, in response to Claire's question.
"Then, it would be only fair to give you the information you'll need." Claire spoke, but Leon was the one to hand a few sheets of paper to the rookie. Heather carefully took the papers, her grip on the thin sheets light, and soon began to scan over the scattered information. However, considering how random some of the information seemed, she wondered just how much of this she'd be able to remember. Suddenly, her eyes stopped moving with the words - it became obvious something caught her attention.
"'Possible biohazardous activity'...?" Her mouth barely moved with the words, and her quiet voice hinted at traces of fear and awe. Of course, she'd never faced such the possibility of what may come, if the gathered information and testimonies accounted for even the slightest slab of truth.
Naturally, however, lying to her may just end up getting her killed if it all did become reality. So, Leon nodded. "Yes. From what I've gathered, it's not serious. It's more of a precaution than anything - we need to be safe and not sorry. The only reason I have to think such a thing could happen, is due to previous experiences in the past. Past similarities and patterns. However, it may be nothing. It's just best you have a warning before we get going." The man explained. No use in trying to sugarcoat the fact it could be dangerous, after all.
Especially if it was the very same as what they had faced before.
Surprisingly, the young woman seemed to take the information in a type of cautious stride - she nodded, understand the information she was given, but wasn't giving the appearance of being too cocky. Good, that would make things easier. Leon knew being cocky in any biohazardous situation was one of the worst things you could do.
"When will we be heading out?" Heather asked - though, both Claire and Leon had a hard time catching any hint of her previous excitement. Either she had covered it up, or it was all replaced with other emotions they didn't bother to place at the moment.
"As soon as possible. The sooner we go, the better. If we wait too long, we may be unable to gather the information we need quickly, and could end up stuck there longer than we want to be." At Leon's explanation, both of the girls in front of him nodded once again.
"Then it's settled. We'll leave tonight. That gives us the time necessary to gain any last minute information, as well as collect the needed gear. We'll report here, in this office, in two hours time." With Leon's final words, Claire and Heather gave a few parting words toward him as well as each other, before heading out on their last minute business.
When his partners had gone, Leon slowly moved over, towards the small window to his left. He liked the view from there; it gave him a good place to look out and just think. Already, the sun was ready to set, making its way towards the horizon in its slow, unnoticable pace. He knew the general idea of just what was to come once they entered the town. He had heard reports, but the barricades had been set. Hopefully they were enough to contain the threat until they arrived.
With a final, low sigh, Leon turned away. As usual, Hell was invading Earth... And Leon was bound and determined to eradicate the virus in which it caused.
...Alright. So, not my best chapter. Definitely won't be my best later, either. I apologize if this all came off as a disappointment - I won't lie, it is to me a bit as well. However, I want to continue on, and I've been on writer's block for this long enough. One day I'll probably come back to this and fix it up. If I do, I'll let everyone know at the beginning of a future chapter. I just hope this hasn't discouraged anyone from continuing - I do hope to make things better, I promise! (Also, they hopefully won't be so damn short...)
