Hello there readers! Sorry about the wait for this chapter! I just got a new job and it's been leaving me pretty tired so I haven't had time to really sit down and write for a while. Since I knew this chapter was going to be a long one I wanted to make sure I had the time to spend to write it. Though I didn't originally intend for it to be a two parter it has ended up being one. I really wanted to combine the day and night storyline, but since I don't want to feel rushed I wanted to give myself a bit more time to write the second half, so it hopefully will be posted soon. I do hope you enjoy the Destiel overload in this chapter.
Also! As of this installment I have reached 250 pages in my story document! This is incredible and all I can do is say thank you all for reading and giving me the nudge I need to continue writing. :)
ENJOY!
"Come on in," said Cass, his nose looking a particularly faded plum and green bruised color.
Dean gave him a smile. He had made sure to arrive on time. Which had meant leaving the house early because his mother had tried to help fix his shirt collar and tame the edges of his hair that she declared needed to be cut off when she could do it, to which Dean had retorted that she should focus on Sam's moppy hair before she worried about his little out of place hairs. But now he was here at the Novak household. He smelled the overwhelming aroma of turkey and if he was correct, there was the faint smell of apple pie.
"Want me to take your coat?" asked Cass.
"Oh, thanks Cass. It smells real good in here. You guys must have been working all morning."
"Well, since this is the first time Mom has been out of the hospital Michael and I really wanted it to go well."
"How is she doing?" asked Dean
Cass, still with Dean's jacket in hand got this dazed look come across his face, and then he began to run his hand over the jacket fabric.
"She's not doing that great," he said quietly. He looked up at Dean, and Cass tried to smile toward him. "She's ready, she doesn't say it-"
"Doesn't say what, Dear?" came a feminine voice.
"Hello Mrs. Novak," said Dean.
The woman came up to them slowly, every step planned and cautious as if to prevent an accidental slip. She then took Dean by surprise by opening her arms and pulling him into an embrace.
"Please, Dear, call me Rebekah," she pulled back from him and smiled at him. Dean realized how much Cass looked like his mother. He wondered what she would have been like before she got sick. She seemed, even in her sickened state, to burn with an energy that impressed the boy. "I'm so happy that you were able to come and join us for Thanksgiving. It's been such a long time since we've had guests on the holidays. It's going to be wonderful this year. Family and friends."
Dean looked at Cass confused.
"My Aunt Hannah is coming and my cousin Gad will be here too."
"My sister has been such a help these last weeks. And Gad is Cass', Anna's, and Michael's only cousin on my side of the family, so I thought it would be good to invite him as well," Rebekah said with a smile.
"He is a lot older than the rest of us," said Cass.
By this point Cass had hung up Dean's jacket and was now helding his mother's shoulder, letting her lean a little bit on him.
"Cool, I'm excited to meet him."
"Can you bring me back to the kitchen sweetie?" asked Rebekah. Cass nodded so he and Dean both headed to the kitchen with Rebekah.
"How is your nose doing Cass?" asked Dean.
"Well it's been a kaleidoscope of colors but it's finally fading in the bruised area."
"My brother, the hero," came a deeper voice. Dean could not help but freeze a little when he saw the tall form of michael come into the kitchen. He looked completely menecing, even while wearing a white apron with "Kiss the Cook" written in black across the front of it and carrying a spatula. Perhaps this made him even more menacing, Dean considered.
Dean laughed strained, "Haha, yep...my hero."
Michael walked past him, as Cass helped Rebekah into a chair. After sitting her down he came over to stand by Dean.
"See, you're fine. Michael's just a big bluffer when it comes to protecting me."
Michael turned to his little brother and gave a smirk.
"Well, doesn't even look like I need to protect him from anyone anymore. Just hope he doesn't see fighting as a way to get cosmetic surgery."
"I really hope your nose is okay," said Dean.
"Personally, I think a new nose would make an improvement," came a loud voice from outside the room.
"Anna," said Rebekah, laughing slightly at her daughter's words.
"What? He should be happy! War wounds are the huge thing nowadays. All the girls I know love when the boy they like has some sort of scar story. You should blame Harry Potter for that"
"I don't think Cass has to worry about chicks digging him," snickered Michael.
"Hey, I think Cass is perfect just the way he is," said Dean, interjecting.
"Well I'm glad about that," said Cass.
"How's the turkey coming along Michael?" asked Chuck upon entering the room.
"Almost done. When will Aunt Hannah and Gad get here?"
"Should be here any moment. Boys, Anna, why don't you make sure the table is all set."
"Sounds good," said Cass.
While the two boys and the short redhead were setting up the table Dean overheard the front door open and Chuck talking with newcomers. He could hear the female's voice, but not the older boys until they both rounded the corner and entered the kitchen.
"Aunt Hannah, nice to see you again," said Cass.
"Gad!" called out Michael, and he went behind the auburn haired woman, and gave the man behind her a hug. The man looked friendly enough, but seemed as if he didn't get out much, by his awkwardness. In some ways Dean couldn't help but see the familial resemblance with him and Cass.
"Aunt Hannah, this is my boyfriend, Dean Winchester," said Cass, to which Dean stepped forward and shook the woman's hand.
"Dean Winchester. I've heard a lot about you from Cass here in our chats. It's very nice to finally meet you."
Her voice was not as sing songy as Rebekah's but still flowed with a warmth and light that Dean found so interesting about both women.
"It's nice to meet you as well."
"This is my son Gad," she said motioning to the tall man.
"Hello," Gad said in a very monotonal voice.
"Nice to meet you Gad," said Dean, extending his hand again, to which Gad shook it with a firm grip.
"It's nice to see you Gad," said Cass, and he hugged the man.
Gad looked like he was about to answer when a look of surprise flushed his face as Anna had ran and given him a hug.
"It's nice to see you Anna," he said to the small redhead who had wrapped herself around him.
"Anna has always taken a liking to Gad," whispered Cass into Dean's ear.
"I'm so glad you are here! You get to sit by me," said Anna, pulling at Gad's hand. Dean watched the older man be pulled away to the table. If Dean hadn't known any better he would have said that Anna had reverted back to being a little child, she was so happy.
The two boys followed Anna into the seating area where Gad and Anna were already sitting.
"Castiel, I must ask, what happened to your nose?" asked Gad.
"Well," Cass began.
"Cass got punched in the face by a bully," said Anna.
"More like kneed in the face," said Dean.
"You were beat up? What for?" asked Gad. Dean was amazed at how calm his voice flowed out of him.
"Cass is gay Gad, some people don't like that," said Anna.
"Actually, that wasn't what it was," said Dean quickly.
"You weren't beat up for being gay, Castiel?" came Rebekah's voice.
"Well, it was really confusing, but, I mean, no, technically no. Crowley just wanted to beat us up. He didn't really have any purpose."
"Besides making us miserable," asgreed Dean.
"When I get my hand's on the little scum, I swear-"
"You will do no such thing Michael. You can't risk getting in trouble before you ship out."
"Well, if I could ring his neck I would."
"Thank's Michael."
"But from what your mother told me, you ended up being the knight in shining armour in this fight," said Hannah.
"Cass was nuts!" cut in Dean. "Didn't even know he could fight like that."
"Well I had to do something," said Cass sheepishly.
"All those wrestling matches finally paid off isn't they, brother?" asked Michael.
"Yeah, still doesn't mean that I liked them," said Cass.
"I remember once when I was in the garden and Castiel ran to me with tears streaming down his face. Anna had just been born I think. Oh, you were just the most adorable thing, but him and Michael had been wrestling, and Castiel had woken Anna, and he knew I had worked so hard putting her down for her nap, and he was so apologetic. It took me just a moment to get Anna back to sleep and more than double that just to calm him down."
"He always was such a cry-baby," snickered Michael.
"I like to phrase it "emotionally-connected"," said Cass, defending himself.
"Gadreel was the same way when he was young. Only he was really sensative with the animals. Always knew I had an animal lover on my hands," said Hannah. Gad grimaced at his mother's words.
"Gadreel," asked Dean only to Cass. Cass shrugged in reply. "Gadreel, Castiel...your family likes to be unusual," said Dean.
"Biblical names runs in my mom's family. It's tradition," said Cass.
"Chuck, is the food ready?" asked Rebekah.
"You tired?" asked Hannah, a sudden concern to her voice.
"Oh, I'm fine Hannah, really. Just wanted to make sure it was ready," said the dark haired woman.
"It is - ready!" exclaimed Chuck, pulling the foil off of the turkey. Michael got up from the table and helped his father bring over the other dishes. Dean's eyes widdened over the impressive display.
"So, Dean, what is your family doing today?" asked Chuck.
"Oh, my family doesn't really celebrate Thanksgiving in the normal fashion. We just normally get a bucket of turkey and watch football. So I'm pretty sure they are just doing that. My brother's eating at his friends."
"He and Jess are so adorable together," pitched in Anna.
"Anna, you think everyone is adorable together."
"Not everyone! I totally called that Kevin and Becky were never going to last. She's a real nutterball," said Anna.
"Anna, that is not what you call someone," scolded Rebekah.
"What," exclaimed Anna, as a dish of food was passed to her. "She's the definition of nerd. Kevin's nerdy, but not fangirl nerdy...more like future ivy league nerdy."
Dean tried to imagine what the couple must be like, and then shook it out of his head.
"Before we eat, shall we say grace?" said Michael.
"Yes, please Dear, will you?" asked Rebekah.
Chuck looked at his wife and nodded.
"If you'll bow your heads with me," Chuck started. Dean followed Cass' example and lowered his head. Dean was by no means religious, but he knew this was no place to be a rebel. "Lord, please look down on us today and give us Your blessing as we celebrate all that we have. Father, I thank you for providing my family with all we need. Thank you for my wife's presence at this table. I pray for her peace and comfort, and Lord thank you for bringing Dean into our lives." Dean's eyes shot open and he looked over at Chuck. The older man still had his eyes closed and head bowed. "We have been blessed in this short time of Castiel knowing him, and I'm so happy that You have allowed him to be a part of our family. I pray that You will provide safe passage for Hannah and Gad when they return home tomorrow. Please bless this food to give us nourishment, and all be for you Lord, in Your son's name, Amen"
A chorus of hushed "Amens" went around the table and then were followed by the clinking of metal utensils. Dean was still looking up the table at Chuck. Chuck looked up and caught Dean's eye. He nodded his head towards Dean, and Dean with a small smile followed suit.
Dean took a bite of food, and happened to look over at Cass who seemed to be struggling.
"What's wrong?" asked Dean.
"Cass has to cut up all his food really small cause he can't chew too much."
"The turkey is giving me some difficulty," said Cass.
Dean laughed, and began helping Cass, so that both boys were cutting a section of the meat into little bits.
"What's so funny?" asked Michael.
"I just think it's interesting that Cass can beat a boy up, but he can't cut up a bit of turkey.
Cass gave Dean a little shove, and playful glare.
"I'd watch out there Dean, Cass looks vicious!" said Anna.
Cass then glared at his sister.
The meal went on like that . Hannah turned towards her sister and began chatting with her and Chuck. Anna babbled on to Gad, who looked niether unhappy or happy, but for the most part was silent. Michael would help balance that, arguing with his little sister, and helping bring some sign of enjoyment out of his cousin.
"How is the eating going?" asked Dean.
Cass gave a small disatisfied groan. "I love the food, but I wish I could eat faster. But at least it's a lot better then when it first was broken. I eat pudding. Pudding!"
"Have I said sorry recently?" asked Dean.
"Even though I don't think it was your fault, you can say sorry. It doesn't hurt to add in a little flair too. Perhaps declaring your sorrow at my pain through lamentations on the floor."
"Lamentations? Did you start reading another vocabulary book or something?" asked Dean. He saw the corner of Cass' mouth turn up.
It was at that moment that Dean felt something touch his leg. He looked down and saw a hand on his knee. He looked over at the dark-haired, blue-eyed owner, who was looking at Anna, apparently enthralled by her discussion of her cheer team drama to Gad and Michael while taking tiny bites of turkey.
"Cass?" whispered Dean, to which he got the reply of Cass squeezing a little above his knee.
Dean dropped his fork, which made a small clunk as it met his plate. The adults looked over at him, and even though he tried to will it away, he knew a blush had enveloped over his face. He grabbed his fork and brought a huge amount of food to his mouth, stuffing his face, trying to cover up his embarrassment. Cass was smirking. Dean didn't even need to look at the boy, and he knew he was smirking. Once Cass' parents and aunt returned to their conversation Dean leaned towards Cass and whispered,
"You are far more evilly playful than I ever believed you to be."
"I try my best," said Cass.
"Well, do think you could try when your family isn't all around us?" asked Dean. "Please? I'm pretty sure I'm as red as a tomato."
Cass patted Dean's knee.
"Okay," Cass said, taking his hand away. "But only because you said please." He took a thoughtful bite off of his fork. "And you look more like a rosy apple," he added.
"What are you two whispering about," asked Rebekah.
"Oh, nothing!" exclaimed Dean.
"You two are just too much," said Rebekah with a smile. "Dean, I hear that you are an avid fan of pie. Is that correct?"
"Yes, Ma'am!" said Dean, glad for the change in subject.
"Well, make sure you leave room for dessert, because I know Cass baked at least two pies, so we will definitely be having some later."
"You baked pie?" asked Dean.
"You said it was your favorite that your mom baked, so I thought I'd give it a go. I know it won't be as good as your mom's but I wanted to give it a try."
"I bet it will be great."
"Dear, are you done?" asked Chuck.
"Yes, I am."
"Here, let's go into the family room then," said Hannah, helping her sister up from her chair and leading her out of the kitchen. Gad got up from his chair and began clearing his place and then grabbed Anna's plate as well. Michael grabbed his own, and Dean and Cass were not far behind.
"That was delicious," said Dean to Cass.
"Michael and Dad did most of it. I did the pie."
"Well, it's a whole lot different than what my family does. But I deifinielty liked it."
"Next Thanksgiving we should go with your family. I'll experience the Winchester Thanksgiving dinner," said Cass.
"You know football?" asked Dean.
"No."
"Well, I'll let my dad explain it to you," said Dean, taking Cass' hand. "I still don't really get it, but perhaps you'll understand it better than me. That would make my dad's day."
"Sounds like a date," said Cass.
"You guys are so puke worthy cute," said Anna, brushing past them to get left over glasses from the table.
"How long have you been together now?" asked Gad from the sink.
Dean thought for a moment.
"Three months," he said.
"Dean's we've only been dating for two months."
"I count us dating from the moment I met you," said Dean.
"See!" exclaimed Anna. "Puke worthy."
This got a smile out of Gad.
"Don't worry Anna, you will understand love when you are older," said Gad.
"I understand love," said Anna.
"And what do you know about love?" asked Michael.
"I know that it is all about the heart. Following your heart and not the orders of those around you. Love finds you when you are least expecting it, and it can make you do things that you never would have done without it."
"Well," said Gad, "I stand corrected. You have many wise observations."
"So why are we puke worthy?" asked Cass of his little sister.
"Cause you're my brother," she replied, as if it was such an obvious question.
Michael laughed, and then Cass joined in. Anna beamed at the amusement that she had been able to bring to her brother's. Dean watched in amazement at this family. He remembered the first time he had been in the house, the gloom and awkwardness on Cass' birthday. That shadow was completely gone right now.
"Hey," said Cass, squeezing Dean's hand, "want to go upstairs?"
"Oh, okay," said Dean.
Cass led them to the stairs whereupon they released their hands and trudged up the stairs. They both entered Cass' room, and Dean noticed that the floor and furniture were bare of the clothes that had covered the room the last time he had been here. Cass sat on the bed and Dean sat next to him.
"Sorry about the knee thing at dinner," said Cass. "I was feeling a bit brave."
"Well it wasn't bad," said Dean with a blush and a laugh, "Just completely
unexpected."
"Well, I can't really kiss you so I had to do something," said Cass, making a relaxed gesture towards his nose.
"I wish I could kiss you," said Dean, intertwining their fingers. He was pleased with himself when that made Cass' cheeks turn red. Dean felt compelled closer to the boy and was about to press his lips to Cass' neck when he felt a buzz against his leg coming from Cass' pocket. Cass gave a sigh and pulled away from Dean, reaching into his pocket and pulling out his cell phone. He gave a chuckle.
"Oh course," he said.
"What is it?" asked Dean.
"It's Gabe," Cass said. "His family is huge. Every year his family has a reunion and they go to this hotel for the weekend. Gabe always texts me to ask me and Balthazar to come and save him."
"Is his family that bad?"
"From what he tells me, Gabe is tame in character compared to the rest of his family. I mean, there is like forty of them that go."
"That's nuts," said Dean.
"I know, I can't imagine how much manpower it takes to make a Thanksgiving dinner that large."
"No, I'm amazed that Gabe is tame compared to the rest of his family."
Cass smiled slightly.
"well, every year he sends the rescue wanted text, to which ever year Balthazar and I both ignore."
"Harsh."
"Well, normally it's just cause Gabe is really weird when it comes to family. He is much better with friends. He has a hard time with family, but U bet by the end of the weekend he'll be fine, as long as his cousin's don't kill him."
"What is Balthazar up to today?" asked Dean.
"He and his parents tend to go out to eat on Thanksgiving. His folks like to keep it classy."
"Sounds like it."
At this point both boys heard a soft knock on the door and turned from each other to look at the door as Gad's face appeared from the hallway.
"So sorry to intrude, but your mother was going to begin cutting the pie. She wanted some before she went to bed."
"Thanks Gad. We're coming," said Cass, getting up from the bed. Dean was right behind him.
"Gonna get me some pie," said Dean with a grin plastered on his face.
"It's just pie," said Cass.
"No, Cass, it's never just pie, it's heaven in your mouth."
Cass closed his bedroom door and all three men went down the stairs and back into the kitchen. Chuck had the pies out and was cutting them into slices and placing them onto small plates.
"Mom's still in the family room. She's very tired so I thought we'd eat in there."
Cass nodded in acknowledgement. Dean took a slice of pie and a fork from the counter. Anna was already munching on a piece while standing, and Michael must have been in the other room. Gad took two plates, one for himself and his mother, and Chuck followed him with two plates in his hands as well. Cass got himself one piece, and the boys and Anna followed the migration into the family room. Rebekah looked very exhausted, but was still sitting up in a chair that was heavily cushioned for her. She held the piece of pie and was taking small bites.
"Dean," she said.
"Yes," Dean answered, while sitting down on the couch next to Cass.
"Will you do me a favor please Dear?"
"Of course," said Dean.
"Will you invite your mother over for tea one of these days. I'd love to meet her," said Rebekah.
"I'm sure she would love to come over for some tea. I'll be sure to let her know."
"Thank you," said Rebekah with a smile.
"So," cut in Cass, he looked at Dean with a small smile. "Do you like it?" he asked.
Dean looked at him, and Cass motioned to the pie. "Oh! Right! I haven't had any." Dean cut off a bit from the edge and brought it up to his lips. The apple pie was definitely homemade and fresh, Dean could tell. "This is really good," he said with his mouth half full. Cass beamed at the praise.
"I concur Castiel," said Gad.
"Good job, Son," said Chuck.
"Thanks!" said Cass to everyone as they all sat and enjoyed the pie.
Rebekah began to nod off, so Chuck and Hannah helped her up the stairs and into her bedroom. When they returned they all sat and enjoyed more pie and quiet conversation. When Dean finally looked up at the clock and saw it hanging over a now dark window and noticed the time was eight he started.
"I should probably head back home," he said.
"Dean, why don't you call your parents and ask if you can just stay the night?" asked Chuck.
Dean looked at him in surprise. Cass looked from his dad to Dean, and then began to nod his head as well.
"You don't have any school tomorrow. You should!"
"But, I didn't bring anything," said Dean.
"You can just borrow something of mine," said Cass.
"It was just an idea. I'd hate for you to have to walk back in the dark and cold."
"Thank you sir, I'll go call them."
Dean got up from the couch and headed into the kitchen and dialed his home number.
"This is Mary speaking, how may I help you?"
"Mom?" asked Dean,
"Dean! I'm glad you called, I was just about to ring you. Are you having a good time?" his mother asked.
"Yes! And Mr. Novak just invited me to stay over tonight, it that was okay with you."
Mary was silent on the other end. Dean could hear his father ask her who was talking and then he heard his mother explain to his dad what was going on.
"Do you have anything with you?" asked Mary.
"No, but Cass said I can borrow something of his."
"Well, I don't really have any issue, but your father-"
"Dean?" cut in John.
"Hello, Dad," said Dean.
"Um. What your mother was trying to say, is that we are okay with you staying over there, but we just want to make sure that you are...respectful of the Novak's house rules. And don't stay up to late, and-"
"Dad, Dad!" exclaimed Dean in an embarrassed tone, "I promise nothing bad is going to happen. Anyway, Cass has a broken nose, so it's not like I can even kiss him or anything," said Dean, hoping that the information would be a bit of payback.
"Okay, okay, I don't need to know. Just be polite, and-"
"Have fun Dean," said Mary, apparently stealing the phone back from her husband.
"Thanks, Mom! Goodnight!"
"Goodnight Sweetie!" said his mother before hanging up the phone.
"Can't even kiss me?" came a voice from behind him. Dean turned suddenly and saw Cass leaning against the wall.
"My Dad thinks we'll be doing something," Dean swallowed nervously. Cass blushed. And Dean did too. "But that's totally not what's going to happen. Cause even if I wanted to do...anything...I'm still afraid of your brother."
Cass gave him a smile, and then grabbed his hand.
"Then just stay with me."
I knew I'd get Gadreel into the story somehow! I have to say that this chapter was very fun and very hard to write. I based the dynamic of the gathering on my own Thanksgiving experiences so please forgive me if it was not what you expected.
I was pretty pumped at this chapter for allowing me to put in some little Supernatural nods. (If you review I'd love for you to put in your favorite in your review).
Also! Some of you might be wondering what level of intimacy I will be taking this story, and even though the boys were a little bit more handsy in this chapter, I do not expect this story ever to get to a level where I would change the rating to M. I'm really not interested in writing that (one because, if it does become part of the plot I wouldn't write it, you all have imaginations and you can just imagine what you want, and two, because both of the characters are fifteen, and I really don't see them doing anything more than being awkwardly handsy with each other.) So I just wanted you all to know that before you think that something smutty will be happening in the next chapter, because it will not.
Thank you for all for favoriting, Following, Reviewing, and just Reading!
I 3 YOU ALL!
