Figuring Things Out

Callie's below the knee amputation surgery had gone off without a hitch. There were no complications and the patient had sailed through surgery. Callie had preformed the surgery on autopilot and she was very thankful that she had done so many amputations and she could now do them on autopilot. She had barely thought about the surgery and if she had never done an amputation before that would be incredibly dangerous, but she had done amputations before and she could even do them in her sleep. Her mind had been focused on the life growing inside of her as well as the decisions that she and Mark had to make. Callie knew that she was going to have this baby, but she wasn't sure what Mark wanted and that made her nervous. She wasn't sure if Mark wanted to be in the baby's life. She wasn't sure if he thought being a father was what he wanted in life right now.

Mark had finally given up sitting anywhere in his office. It had lost it's comforting nature and it was now more distracting than calming. He had gone into the on call room about an hour ago. He knew that a lot of the other surgeons were in surgery right now Mark guessed that he would have the on call room to himself, at least for a little while. He leaned against the wall and tried to imagine he and Callie with a baby. It was an image that a year ago he would have been unable to see because of his feelings for Addison, but now he could see the picture so clearly and Mark knew that their baby would be beautiful. After all, Callie was beautiful and he was not exactly ugly.

Now that he had realized how amazing having a baby with Callie would be, he wanted to talk to Callie and see what she was thinking. He was hoping that she would agree with him on how awesome their having a baby together would be. He had no idea if she was out of surgery yet, but he knew that his patience couldn't hold out much longer. He was tired so he decided to lay down and try to get some shut eye before Callie came to talk to him about what they wanted to do.

Callie pushed open the on call room door. She had a feeling that Mark was in here maybe still processing what she had just told him hours ago. She knew Mark better than any other woman here in Seattle knew him. She was right. Mark was lying down on the bottom bunk. He looked to be asleep and Callie didn't want to wake him, but they needed to talk. She sat down on the bed with him and that movement on the small bed seemed to rouse him.

"Mark it's Callie." Callie whispered softly so she wouldn't startle him.

Mark opened his eyes and focused on the dark haired woman above him. He struggled to sit up and he rubbed his eyes as he woke up slowly.

"Hi Cal." Mark murmured, still waking up slowly.

Callie wasn't sure who was going to talk first. She wanted to hear Mark's thoughts, but if he was still thinking things over, the last thing she wanted to do was rush him.

Mark looked at Callie and smiled at her. He was now much more awake than he was just a minute or so ago. He had no idea how long he had slept, but apparently he had needed it more than he had realized.

"I want to be there. For you and for the baby. Every appointment I want to be there. Lamaze classes and all of that." Mark told her softly. He was serious too. He wanted to prove to people that he could be a much better father than his own father had been to him. Plus he really wanted to be involved with Callie's pregnancy and the labor and delivery. He wanted to be able to watch his child grow up and take an active role in his or her life.

Callie didn't know what she had been expecting, but it hadn't been that. She hadn't expected Mark to want to be completely and totally involved with everything. Mark had just given her a very good surprise.

"That was what I was hoping you'd say Mark." Callie whispered with a smile on her face. Her child would have a father who was an active participant in her life. Callie couldn't ask for more than that She rested her head on Mark's shoulder and sighed contentedly. She was going to have a baby and the father wasn't running.

"You are a good man Mark." Callie whispered softly. Mark grinned when Callie heard that. He knew that his desire to be 100% involved with everything had startled Callie, but it was what he wanted. Not just for himself, but for Callie and the baby too. He kissed the top of Callie's head as his hand rested on her stomach. He was aware that the baby was the size of a pea, but Mark didn't care. He felt that his hand needed to be there for some unexplainable reason.

Callie pulled out the ultrasound pictures that she had stashed in her scrub pants pocket. She hadn't wanted to be without the pictures during surgery so she had stashed them in her pocket. There was no way she was going to stash them in her scrub top just in case people saw them. She wasn't ready to tell a lot of people. Of course she had no clue that Cristina had just told her resident friends. She handed one of the pictures to Mark knowing that hr would want a picture of his child.

"Congratulations Daddy." Callie whispered, her head still resting on Mark's shoulder.

Mark's slate colored eyes looked at the picture in front of him. All he saw was a tiny pea sized thing and he knew that was his child.

"Thank you Callie." Mark whispered back. Callie was giving him the gift that Addison had taken from him. Mark knew that he was in a much better place to be a father than he was last year, but it didn't make it right, what Addison had done to him and to their child.

Callie had a feeling that she knew what Mark was thinking about. She had a feeling that Mark was thinking about his first child he could have had with Addison.

"This is your second chance Mark. Even manwhores like you get second chances." Callie whispered softly.

Mark nodded his head slowly. He had to stop thinking about what Addison had done to him and focus on the fact that Callie was right. He was getting a second chance to be a father and he was happy that he was getting a second chance.

"Thank you Callie." Mark whispered. The thank you was for so many things, but the most important thing was that he was thanking her for believing in him and for allowing him to have this second chance to be a father.

It fell silent in that on call room. Each of them were thinking of different things. Callie was thinking of how her father was going to attempt to strong arm Mark into marrying her because of the pregnancy. Mark was thinking about the baby and how he was going to handle fatherhood. Finally Mark spoke to Callie.

"You need an OB Cal." Mark reminded her

Callie's OBGYN was currently in LA so Callie either needed to find a new one as soon as possible or she needed to call Addison and beg her to be her OB throughout the pregnancy. It was going to be interesting because of Addison and Mark's history, but Callie knew that Addison was a professional and she would handle the situation with poise and grace.

"Call Addison." Mark told Callie. Mark knew that it had the potential to be slightly awkward given that Addison was his ex…well whatever she was, but he also knew that his baby and Callie deserved the best and Addison was the best.

Callie looked at Mark just to make sure that he was okay with her calling Addison and that he was not just acting like he was okay with it. Mark seemed to be okay with it so she dialed Addison's direct line at Oceanside Wellness.

Addison was sitting in her office working on updating her patient's charts when her phone rang. She didn't know many people that had her direct line. Her patients had her pager number but not her direct line to her office. She answered the phone, curious as to who was on the other line.

"Hello?" Addison answered.

"Hi Addie." Callie greeted her best friend cheerfully.

Now Addison knew something was up. She could hear that tone in Callie's voice telling her that something was going on.

"Hi Callie. What's going on?" Addison asked. She wanted to know why Callie had called her. The suspense was killing her already.

There was a pause on Callie's end as she tried to figure out how to tell Addison what was going on. Then finally there were words.

"I'm pregnant." Callie told Addison.

Addison was stunned. She had had no idea that Callie had even been seeing someone. She guessed it could have been a one night stand, but she wasn't aware that Callie did those on a regular basis.

"Congratulations Callie. Who's the father?" Addison asked curiously. Maybe she wouldn't know him but she figured it was best to know either way.

Callie looked at Mark wondering how she was going to tell Addison that she was pregnant with Mark's child. Mark and Addison had hurt each other countless times. Callie knew that Addison had no feelings for Mark anymore, but she knew that it was still going to be a shock. It would be a shock to anyone in Addison's position. Callie put the phone on speakerphone feeling like Mark should be the one to tell Addison.

"It's mine Addie." Mark told Addison quietly.

Addison couldn't believe it. Mark was the father of her Seattle best friend's baby. Addison couldn't believe this was actually happening. It was true that he had no romantic feelings left for Mark, but it didn't make her feel any better knowing that she had killed his first child and as it turned out, the only child she would ever have.

"Congratulations Mark." Addison told him, attempting to make her voice stronger than it felt at the moment.

"Thank you Addie. I think I needed to hear that from you." Mark admitted before he looked at Callie. Callie took the phone back and took it off speakerphone. She still had one big favor to ask Addison.

"Would you be my OB. Mark and I both trust you."

Addison was sure that she had stopped breathing so many times during this conversation that one last time wouldn't hurt her.

"I…uh are you sure that's what you both want?" Addison stumbled. She never stumbled over her words. She felt like a nervous junior high school student again.

"Yes it was Mark's idea and we both want you to take care of our child. We trust you completely" Callie assured her friend.

Addison nodded slowly, then realized that neither Callie nor Mark could see her nodding. She finally spoke

"Then yes I will be your OB."

Callie breathed a huge sigh of relief as she nodded in Mark's direction, letting him know that Addison had agreed to be her doctor.

"Okay, Mark and I will be on a plane in two days." Callie informed Addison.

Addison was taken aback when she heard that Mark could be coming to LA. She didn't want anyone knowing how badly her live life sucked and how boring it was only see one patient a day. She especially did not want Mark Sloan knowing

"Why is Mark coming?" Addison asked. Yes that had been a little more rude than she had intended, but she needed to know the reason.

"Because Mark said that he wanted to be involved with everything." Callie answered.

"Oh." Addison commented. Now she felt stupid. Mark had clearly moved on. Maybe he was even dating Callie, Addison wasn't sure but if they weren't dating yet, Addison had a feeling they would be soon.

"Listen I have to go. I'll see you both in two days." Addison told Callie. She needed to get off the phone. She could not believe that she could not have any more children and the father of the baby she had aborted was having a baby with her best friend in Seattle. This was clearly not her day.

"Bye Addie." Mark and Callie both said simultaneously before they hung up the phone.

Callie moved so that she was lying down with her head in Mark's lap. Mark's hand hadn't moved from her stomach. It was comforting to her that Mark's hand hadn't moved. She felt like they were even a little family. Callie wasn't stupid enough to say that to Mark and have him freak out though.

"You know my dad is going to try and talk you into marrying me." Callie pointed out. Mark laughed and shook his head.

"You are a amazing person Cal but I am but I am not going to marry you just because I knocked you up." Mark told her with another shake of his head. Mark had never even thought that he would marry anyone and he still wasn't 100% sure that he wanted to get married at all.

"Just trying to prepare you for my dad when he finds out you got me pregnant." Callie warned Mark with a soft smile.

"I think I can hold my own with your father Cal." Mark assured Callie.

Callie yawned, the stress of this day finally getting to her. This day had been insane and all she wanted to do was sleep. Sleep for the next week at least. Mark looked down at the woman lying on him and he smiled.

"Sleep Cal. I am right here. I have nothing else to do all day." Mark reassured her. Callie looked at Mark and whispered.

"Then can you take me home?"

Mark shook his head. He didn't want to take her back to the apartment that she shared with Cristina Yang. He wanted her to come back to the hotel with him.

"Come back to the hotel with me." Mark told her. Callie raised an eyebrow remembering what Mark usually meant when he said that.

"No Callie. Nothing like that. I promise. I just don't want Yang to know yet." Mark told her quickly.

Callie shot him a guilty look. Mark groaned, knowing that if Yang knew, then every other resident in that hospital knew.

"You told Yang?" Mark demanded.

"I had to have someone do the ultrasound Mark." Callie pointed out quickly.

Mark sighed knowing that Callie was right. Besides Mark knew that Callie would never have let Izzie or Meredith do the ultrasound. Not after what had happened to her marriage to George.

"Okay fine." Mark conceded.

Callie sat up and looked at Mark again. Maybe she should stay at Mark's hotel room. After all he knew about the baby and they could talk some more about it.

"Take me to your hotel." Callie told Mark. Mark smiled and slipped the ultrasound photo in his pocket. It seemed as though he had won the argument.

An hour later, they were in Mark's hotel room. Callie was relaxing against the stack of pillows on Mark's bed. Mark was ordering Chinese food that Callie was craving. Once Mark hung up the phone, he joined Callie in the bed

"Is it too early to be thinking of names?" Callie asked hopefully. Callie had already started to think of names even though she knew that she should wait until the first trimester was over.

Mark shook his head as his hand rested on her stomach. He had a feeling that his hand would be a permanent fixture on her stomach.

"Do you have anything in mind?" Mark asked Callie. Callie nodded with a small smile.

"Yeah Seth for a boy."

"Yeah if you want him to get his ass kicked on the playground." Mark told her.

"Okay Mr. Big Shot you come up with a name. "Callie challenged him.

"Okay Camille for a girl." Mark suggested

"Ew, how many Camille's have you slept with? "Callie commented with a wrinkle of her nose.

"None." Mark insisted. Callie didn't like the name Camille at all.

"Different name Mark." Callie told him.

"Okay, how about Sebastian."

"No, that sounds like a pretentious brat of a kid." Callie immediately vetoed the name.

"Maybe we should wait at least until we know the sex." Mark suggested. Finally Mark had come up with an idea that didn't give Callie more nausea.

When the Chinese food arrived, Callie attacked it like she hadn't seen food in days. She finished her plate of food in a matter of minutes while Mark was still eating his Chow Mein. Once the food was finished, Mark and Callie looked at the bed. They had spent so much time in Mark's bed, but this was different.

"No sleeping naked Mark. Boxers stay on." Callie told Mark flatly as she searched for a t-shirt of Mark's that she could wear.

Callie stripped down to her panties and bra and slipped Mark's Knicks t-shirt over her head. Mark knew that he had to obey Callie's rules so he stripped down to his boxers.

"And keep your hands to yourself." Callie added as she climbed into bed. Mark knew that he sometimes had an inability to keep his hands to himself but he knew that he could keep his hands to himself if he was asked to. They climbed into bed together and Mark switched off the lights. He wanted to pull Callie in his arms, but he suspected that would be breaking the whole hands to himself rule. Plus he wasn't dating her so he wasn't allowed to hold her like that. Callie and Mark fell asleep rather quickly, knowing that the next few weeks and months would bring a lot of changes to both of them.
