A/N Okay so I don't know why I only got two reviews for the last chapter. I am not going to beg for reviews. I'll keep writing as long as I have even one reader.
Grandparents
It had been two days since Callie and Mark had gotten home from LA. Which meant they had known for four days that Callie was expecting twins. Everyone at work had been super excited to hear that there would be two new additions to the SGH family instead of just one. Derek in particular had been really excited to find out that his "brother" was going to have two babies. The hospital was already starting a pool to guess the sexes of the twins. This was why Mark and Callie were very glad that they had the weekend off. They planned to sit in the hotel room and do absolutely nothing all weekend. They had only been back to work two days, but they were already feeling drained from the baby fever that the hospital seemed to have now.
It was Friday evening and they were both sitting on the bed eating Chinese food. Callie now couldn't get enough of it. She had told Mark repeatedly that he could order something other than Chinese for himself if he was getting bored of Chinese. Mark assured her that he was fine with Chinese food. He looked at Callie as she grabbed her potstickers. She was definitely viscous when she was hungry. Callie caught Mark looking at her and she blushed. She had no idea why he was looking at her, but she assumed that it was because she had food on her face.
"What is on my face?" Callie demanded. Mark chuckled when Callie spoke. Her demanding voice he had always turned him on. Now he just found her demanding voice adorable. Not that he would admit that to her yet.
"Nothing Cal. Just watching you shove food in your mouth is quite entertaining." Mark told her, smirking. Callie scowled at him and swatted his arm with her hand. Mark pretended to look hurt and he said,"Great the mother of my kids is abusing me."
Callie glared at him and muttered,
"I'll show you what abuse looks like."
Mark was still smirking at her. He knew that her threats were empty threats. He knew that she would not hit him again.
"We should call your parents Cal." Mark told her. Mark knew that Callie wanted her parents to know. He also knew that her father would not agree with the idea that she wasn't marrying the man who had gotten her pregnant.
"I don't want to." Callie told Mark stubbornly as she reached for another potsticker.
"I know you don't want to call them, but if you don't tell them that they are going to have two grandkids in eight months, then your dad will find some way to blame me for them not knowing." Mark pointed out. He did not want to be blamed for Callie's parents not knowing that they were going to be grandparents and he knew that it was a strong possibility that he would be blamed if they didn't call her parents as soon as possible. Callie scowled, knowing Mark was right. Her father would blame Mark for them not knowing that they were going to be grandparents.
"Okay fine I'll call them, but you have to call your parents too." Callie told Mark. Mark raised an eyebrow at Callie. He hadn't seen or talked to his parents since med school graduation and that had been about fourteen years ago, when he was twenty six.
"Cal, I haven't seen or talked to them in fourteen years." Mark reminded her. He could only guess how that conversation would go. He wasn't even sure if they would remember that they had a son. After all his father was seventy two and his mom was seventy.
"I don't care. A deal is a deal." Callie pointed out after she had swallowed her potsticker.
"Fine, but you call your parents first." Mark told Callie.
"If that will make you call your parents then I will definitely call them now." Callie told Mark with a grin slowly spreading on her face.
Mark groaned. He could not believe that Callie was making him call his parents. He didn't want to call them. In fact he would be perfectly happy if he never had to see them again .They had never been supportive when he was small and he highly doubted that they had changed much in fourteen years. Mark had no idea if they were in good health or poor health or anything like that. The really scary part was that he didn't care if they were in poor health. They had been horrible parents to him. He had felt more comfortable at Derek's house than his own.
"Can I call Carolyn instead?" Mark asked hopefully. Callie shook her head. Mark was not getting out of calling his biological parents that easily.
"You can call her after you call your parents."
"I wouldn't call them parents. Sperm donor and egg donor maybe, but not parents. They sucked as parents." Mark muttered.
Callie sighed knowing that Mark hadn't had supportive parents at all. He had told her more than once that his parents had cared more about their social calendar than their son.
"Call them. For me. Please Mark." Callie murmured softly.
Callie didn't need to know that Mark would do almost anything for this woman sitting in the bed with him.
"Okay." Mark agreed in a low voice.
Callie dialed her parents number hoping that they would be home and not out to dinner. She tossed Mark a sidelong glance and whispered,
"I am going to have to say that you are my boyfriend. Maybe Daddy won't be so upset then."
Mark was startled by that. So when Mr. and Mrs. Torres came to visit, Mark would have to play the boyfriend. He was pretty sure he could do that role quite well.
In Miami the phone was ringing off the hook in the Master bedroom. Esteban and Maria Torres were in the bedroom doing things that they knew that their daughter wouldn't want to know about. Finally tired of the incessant ringing, Maria answered the phone.
"Hello?" Maria said into the phone. She sounded a bit breathless, but she hoped whoever was on the other line didn't notice.
"Mama." Came Callie's voice.
Maria shook Esteban and he came out from underneath the covers. He had no idea who it was on the phone.
"It's Calliope." Maria whispered.
"Put the phone on speakerphone." Esteban ordered as he sat up beside his wife. Maria put the phone on the speakerphone like Esteban had told her to.
"Daddy's here too Calliope." Maria told her daughter.
"I need to tell you something." Callie began. She looked at Mark and Mark rested his hand lightly on top of hers. He needed her to know that he was right there beside her.
"I'm pregnant." Callie told her parents.
"Who is this man who got my daughter pregnant?" Demanded Esteban.
"Are you sure that you are pregnant Calliope?" Maria asked.,
"My boyfriend is the one that got me pregnant Daddy." Callie answered. She heard her mother's question and Callie sighed.
"Yes Mama. I am sure I am pregnant." Callie told her mother.
"I want to talk to your boyfriend." Esteban told Callie. Maria looked at her husband and shook her head.
"Don't scare the poor boy." Maria whispered.
"I have no plans to scare him. I just want to know his intentions with my Calliope." Esteban replied.
Callie handed Mark the phone and said,
"My father wants to talk to you."
Mark was nervous. He had no idea what Esteban Torres wanted to talk to him about. Historically he had never gotten along with fathers and he had a feeling that this would be no different. He turned off the speakerphone just in case it got ugly.
"Hello Sir." Mark spoke into the phone.
"So you are the boyfriend that got my Calliope pregnant." Esteban spoke.
"Yes Sir." Mark replied. He figured his best bet was to just be very polite to Esteban.
"What are your intentions with my daughter?" Esteban demanded, Mark swallowed hard. He knew what Esteban wanted him to say, but Mark wasn't going to marry Callie just because he had gotten her pregnant. He and Callie had already discussed that and Callie had agreed..
"I intend to love her and love our kids." Mark replied. Well that wasn't a lie. He did love Callie, but Callie just wasn't privy to that information yet.
"You have to marry her. She can't be an unwed mother." Esteban insisted.
"I understand your concern Sir, but Callie and I have discussed it and we are not ready for marriage yet." Mark told Esteban politely. Esteban was furious. He wanted his daughter to be married before she had a baby.
"Put my daughter back on." Esteban ordered.
Mark passed Callie the phone, now feeling like crap. He hadn't lied to Esteban but he knew that Esteban wasn't too happy with him.
"Daddy, you don't get to give my boyfriend the third degree." Callie snapped at her father, Mark looked up when he heard Callie use that pissed off snap.
"I just want you to be married before you bring a baby into the world."
"I know that Daddy, but this is my life. I believe that Mark loves me and will take care of me and the babies." Callie told her father.
"Wait, babies as in more than one?" Esteban demanded. He looked at his wife who was beaming. His wife had heard everything because Esteban had not taken their speakerphone off when he spoke to Mark.
"Twins Daddy." Callie answered.
"Well congratulations Calliope. I don't like the fact that you aren't married, but as long as Mark is good to you and to the babies I won't complain." Esteban finally said. Maria and Callie seemed to sigh with relief at the exact same moment.
"Congratulations sweetheart. We want to come see you soon." Maria told her daughter.
"It's pretty busy right now at the hospital. Maybe next month?" Callie suggested with a small smile. She needed time before her parents came to Seattle.
"That sounds good sweetheart."
"Mama, Daddy Mark has to call his parents now." Callie told her parents in an effort to get them off of the phone.
"Okay bye Calliope. Say hi to your boyfriend from us too." Maria told Callie before she hung up the phone in Miami.
Now it was Mark's turn. He still did not want to do this. He hadn't spoken to his parents in almost a decade and a half. He had no idea what their reaction to him calling would be. He was glad that Callie was beside him. He knew he wouldn't do this for anyone else but Callie. He looked over at Callie and said
"Next month I am going to be playing the doting boyfriend."
"Yes, you are to be my boyfriend when they are here next month." Callie confirmed. She wanted Mark to stop stalling so she put the phone back in Mark's hand. The sooner Mark got this over with, the sooner they could enjoy the rest of their evening.
"Now call them." Callie told Mark firmly. Her dark brown eyes met Mark's slate colored ones and they stared at each other for what seemed like forever. Finally Callie broke the gaze.
Mark dialed his parents number hoping that it was the same number as it had been all of his life. As much as he tried to forget it, he couldn't.
Eleanor Sloan was in the living room drinking herb tea when the phone rang. She got up to answer it and when she put it to her ear, she spoke.
"Hello?"
"Mom it's me." Mark said quietly. Eleanor Sloan almost dropped the phone in surprise. Her only son hadn't called in fourteen years. She also hadn't seen him in that amount of time. Eleanor knew that something was going on.
"Mark?" Eleanor whispered. Tears filled the older woman's eyes. She was finally hearing her son's voice again.
"Hi Mom." Mark told his mother. He could tell that she was crying and Mark wasn't sure if that was a good thing or not.
"Is everything all right?" Eleanor asked nervously.
"It's better than all right Mom. I'm going to be a father." Mark told his mother with a smile on his face. His father's bizarre absence suddenly hit him.
"Where's Dad?" Mark asked.
Eleanor was still back on the fact that she was going to be a grandmother. Finally after years of hoping that her son would have kids, Eleanor was finally getting a grandchild. When the question came about her husband Edward, Eleanor sighed. How was she going to tell her son. She knew that she had never been a good mother and neither had Edward, but this was going to be hard to tell her son.
"Dad's sick." Eleanor finally told Mark.
"Okay well get him up then. I doubt it's that bad." Mark insisted. He wanted his dad to know that he didn't need parental support to be a good person.
"Markā¦He has Alzheimer's." Eleanor told her son. Mark was stunned. He had always hated his father, but now knowing that he was sick was awful.
"Does he remember you?" Mark asked softly. Callie put her hand on Mark's shoulder. She could tell that he was upset.
"Some days he does." Eleanor told Mark quietly.
"He doesn't remember me, does he?" Mark asked flatly. He had to remove any emotion from his voice. He didn't want Eleanor or Callie to know that he was upset. That would mean he cared about a man who had been a horrible father to Mark.
"I am so sorry Mark," Eleanor told him softly. Mark had expected Eleanor's response, but it was painful.
"Don't apologize Mom." Mark told Eleanor.
"So I get a grandchild finally?" Eleanor asked. She clearly wanted to change the topic to something a little happier.
"Two actually, but that's not important. What are the doctor's saying?" Mark wanted to know what was being said about his father's condition.
"They are giving him six months." Eleanor whispered. Mark was startled at the reaction that he had. He was actually feeling regret for not trying to make amends with his father before.
"Twins Mark?" Eleanor asked, changing the subject back to her grandchildren. She couldn't think about her husband's illness anymore.
Callie was only hearing one side of the conversation, but she knew that whatever was going on was really upsetting Mark even if he didn't want to admit it.
Mark smiled. Right now he had to focus on the happy things. He would have time later to deal with his father's illness.
"Yes, My girlfriend and I are expecting twins." Mark called Callie his girlfriend mainly because she was just as old fashioned as Callie's parents.
"I wish I could come down and see them when they are born, but I can't leave your father." Eleanor told her son.
"It's all right Mom. We'll send you pictures." Mark assured his mother.
"Listen I have to go give your father, his medication. Call me again soon." Eleanor told her son.
"I want to come to New York. I know you said that he doesn't remember me, but there are things I want to say to him before he passes." Mark told his mother. Eleanor nodded. She wanted to see her son in person. She missed him and she had a feeling that he looked a lot like his father.
"I'd like that Mark." Eleanor told her son.
"Well I'll make the arrangements and then I'll call you." Mark told his mother.
"I am glad you called Mark. I will talk to you later." Eleanor told her son with a small smile.
"Bye Mom." Mark said before he hung up the phone.
Callie was worried about Mark. Whatever his mother had told him had really upset him. Which Callie found strange because Mark was not close with his parents. Mark stared off into space trying to deal with the news that his mother had just told him. Callie kept her eyes on him and she finally got up the courage to speak.
"What is it Mark?"
"My father has Alzheimer's and apparently it is advanced enough for him not to even remember me." Mark explained to Callie. Callie sighed heavily. No wonder Mark looked guilty. She suspected that he was guilty for not forgiving his father sooner for his lousy childhood. Callie wished she knew what to do in this situation. She hated feeling helpless.
"What do you want right now Mark?" Callie asked him softly.
Mark looked at Callie and his hands rested on her knees. His eyes drifted from her eyes to her lips. He wanted to kiss her. He wanted something to make the guilt fade. Callie could tell what he was thinking and she would not have sex with Mark just because he was actually hurting for his father and feeling guilty for not fixing things before now. She had already had sex with George right after his father had died and she had decided not to use sex as a coping mechanism ever again and she wouldn't let Mark do that right now.
"I am not having sex with you to make the guilt fade." Callie told him seriously.
"I am not asking for sex Cal. Just a kiss. Please." Mark pleaded. He needed something other than his father's illness to focus on.
Callie wasn't sure why she was doing this, but she nodded. Mark leaned forward and pressed his lips harshly against hers. He kissed her harshly and tangled his hands into her hair. He needed to feel good again. When Callie pulled away from the intense kiss, she was sure that her lips would be bruised the next day.
"Thank you Cal." Mark whispered as she brushed her cheek with his thumb.
"It's not happening again Mark. So don't get used to it." Callie teased him playfully.
"Let's go to sleep Cal." Mark told Callie. Callie was already wearing her clothes for bed. She had been wearing a t-shirt and panties all day since they hadn't left the hotel room. Mark stripped his sweats off and got into bed wearing just his boxers again. Clearly Mark didn't want to talk anymore about his father's health. All he wanted was to sleep right now. And finally sleep he and Callie both did. Callie was already asleep when Mark wrapped his arms around her waist and fell asleep with his face buried in her hair.
