Chapter Four: A Little Inconvenience

Max's Pov

(Monday, Gym Class)

"Quiet down class," coach demands."Thank you. Alright, today you're going to be picking teams for basketball. We're gonna have four teams...Caden… Nick… Lisa…. And Brittney, you're gonna be the team captains. Nick you pick first."

"It's Fang," he corrects. "And I pick Riley."

"Toby," Britney chooses next.

"I'll take Xander," Lisa shrugs.

"Lucas." Caden decides.

"Martinez," Fang calls.

Wait, what. Really?

Me?

I mean, It's not like I'm bad at sports -I'm actually really good at most- but I'm usually like the tenth or so person chosen; the first of the girls but after all of the boys.

"You deaf Martinez? Come on."

I slide through the crowd and hesitantly make my way towards Fang, while the other team captains call out more names. I stand behind Fang, alongside Riley. He smiles warmly at me and memories of last night begin running through my head. I smile back quickly and then look away.

"What do you think, Martinez?" Fang whispers to me, over his shoulder.

"What?" I question.

"Who do you think we should pick?"

"Oh, um," I look around the room at who's left. I whisper back, "Drew."

"Drew," He calls out.

Once everyone's claimed to a team, coach tells us to start practicing. To my surprise, I'm not the only girl on my team. Which, I guess, shouldn't surprise me because we have a lot more girls than boys, so everyone team was bound to have at least two girls.

The other girl on my team is a quite girl from the track team -Carter Rough. She's the type of girl who doesn't seem like she'd play any sports, because she's shy and skittish but she's really good at Track…. but she's only good at Track.

I watch as she makes her way to the bleachers and takes a seat. She obviously feels as uncomfortable on this team as I do. The other teams have gone off to other courts and started warming up, while I'm practically standing alone in the middle of our court, dribbling a ball while all of our other team mates are huddled up in a circle talking.

Theyre pretty far but from the echo in the gym I can pretty much hear what they're saying;

"Fang, dude. Why didn't you pick Dylan when you had the chance? He's number two on the team," I think came from Drew. "Instead you picked Rough, who can't shoot a basket to save her life?"

"I have nothing against having girls on our team but we can't have sucky one's," Josh states.

"Yeah," Troy agrees." But more importantly, why did you picked her before me?"

After class I follow the crowd of girls towards the locker room enterance, but I'm pulled off to the side before I reach the door. I turn around expecting it to be Riley, already thinking of some excuse in my head as to why I have to go this very instant, but instead it's Fang Ride standing in front of me.

Well this isn't weird at all.

"What do you want?" I question.

"I need to talk to you."

I glance around at the gym. It's completely empty. "I'm listening."

"Saturday, at the party. What did I say to you?"

"What?"

"What did I say," He repeats. "I know I was talking to you, I just can't remeber what."

"Just a bunch of stupid jokes and then beer pong," I sum up, leaving out the part in the car where he said my lap was comfy to lay on.

Why is he asking me about a two minute conversation that we had? It wasn't even a conversation, it was more of a short drunken encounter that we had before he passed out.

"What else?" Fang demands.

"Nothing."

"That was it?" He looks confused.

I nod slowly. "Yeah... Don't you remember?"

"No, everything's all jumbled up in my head right now," he admits. "I can't decipher the difference between memories and dreams… I have to go."

He walks -practically jogs- from the gym.

I swear this day just keeps getting weirder and weirder.

I brush it off and head into the girl's locker room and begin getting my spare clothes out but before I can even finish, someone else is grabbing my arm and pulls me to the back of the locker room.

I'm really getting tired of being pulled around.

"What was that about?" Nudge interrogates.

"Were you spying on me?" I cross my arms over my chest.

She gives me a guilty look. "Sorry! But I saw Fang talking to you and I had to know."

"Why? What's the big deal about it?"

"What's the big deal?!" She looks at me like I just kicked her newborn puppy. "He's the hottest guy in school! And though I tend to admire nerdy, good boys, Fang Ride is still a major catch."

When she doesn't get a response back from me, she continues on. "So what did he want? I couldn't hear."

"He just had a question."

"About.." she prompts.

No matter what I say, Nudge will automatically assume that it was something more than it was and she go off telling everyone bullsit and honestly I don't want to explain it to her right now. It'll take too much time and energy and I hate trying to talk over her constant questions and comments.

"Nothing important Nudge."

"Ugh, whatever. Don't tell me, I have to go anyways," he frowns. "Class starts in a few minutes and mine is at the complete other side of the school."

"Wait, why are you here anyways? You don't take gym."

"No, I don't but I needed to talk to Lisa about something," Nudge explains. "Anyways, so I'll see you later?"

"Yeah, Definitely."

She begins making her way towards the locker room exit in her five inch heels, that I will never understand how she walks in. My ankles hurt just thinking about them.

"Don't think you're off the hook either, I will make you tell me the truth and if not I will tell the whole school that you're in a secret romance!"

"There's no secret romance!" I protest, but she's already out of the door.

"Well no duh, dip-shit. Who would want to be romantic with you?" A familiar voice says. I look over to see Lisa LaFront... and she's completely naked.

"God, Lisa! At least have the decency to put some clothes on!" I look away.

"Why? I'm proud of my body, this was hard work."

"Obviously."

"So what were you and Fang talking about?"

"What's it to you?"

Why does anyone even give a fuck? It was a thirty second conversation?

She laughs a humorless laugh. "Because Fang is my future husband and everyone knows it. So you better back the fuck off."

I glare at her out of the corner of my eye. "Maybe you should be telling your "BFF" this. You know, Tiffany -the one who's dating Fang."

"He's not dating her, you idiot. They're just friends with benefits. Fang doesn't date because he's waiting for me. Him sleeping with other girls is him just getting it all out of his system before he settles with me. I mean, we're perfect for each other, anyone with eyes can see that."

"You know what? You're right." I say, surprising myself. This is the first thing Lisa and I have ever agreed since meetting each other. "You're both spoiled, entitled, trust fund babies, who get everything handed to them and use people for their own amusement and just discard them when you're done. You are perfect for each other."

"Awe, you really think so?" She places a hand on her heart, as if was a compliment. The thing is, I don't know if she's joking or not. "But I think we both prefer the phrase good looking in there or attractive. Something along that line."

"I'll keep that in mind." I sarcastically remark. "Now can you just go so I can change?"

"Go ahead, change your clothes. No need to feel ashamed, not everyone can have a perfect figure like mine."

"You know Lisa, if you want to see me naked, all you have to do is ask."

Her face begins to turn red in frustration.

"Ew, no you freak," she throws her perfect locks behind her shoulder." I don't have time for you, I have to go finish my shower."

"You know, next class starts in two minutes, right? Not two hours." I inform.

"So what, I'll skip it. Geez what are you, my mother?"

"I wouldn't wish that position on anyone."
