I hated high school.
Middle school was a breeze compared to my freshman year.
"Sadie Kane, what an eye sore you are."
I rolled my eyes as I slammed my locker closed, turning toward the owner of the squeaky voice. Jenni Harts stood in my way, hands on her hips and a teasing smirk on her lips. Two other girls, Hayley and Erica, flocked not to far behind her.
"Good evening Jenni, fake as ever I see," I said, nonchalantly. Shifting my backpack on my shoulder, I started walking away but Jenni stepped in my way.
"Who said you could speak to me that way freak!" she screeched. I honestly wondered how someone could have such an annoying voice. I didn't know why Jenni hated me, I didn't do anything that would explain her unhealthy obsession on making my school days a living hell. She was the typical popular girl, head cheerleader and all that jazz. Blonde hair, high heels, she looked like she walked off the Mean Girls musical stage.
"Shove off," I said, stepping up to Jenni. She immediately backed up a step, walking into her posse.
Trying to seem tough, she cleared her throat.
"You'll pay Kane," she threatened as she walked away, her friends glaring at me as they passed. I chuckled at her weak threat, a big-headed girl wasn't going to scare me. I began walking to my class, shoving past the students trying to get to class on time.
Finding a seat in CHEM, I plugged my headphones in as the teacher began lecturing. Public school was filled with chaos and teachers who didn't care about actually teaching, I hated the States.
My phone buzzed, grabbing my attention. Sneaking it out of my pocket, I couldn't help but smile at the text message I received.
Want to walk home together? a message from Anubis. He was the only thing that made coming to school worth all the harassment. Carter would drive us to school every morning but since my nerd of a brother joined the Mathletics team, that meant he wasn't able to give us a ride home. Anubis and I walked, which I didn't mind.
Anubis really blossomed in school.
Not necessarily popular, he was still shy and brooding but he had a passion for learning. He was easy to get along with, which meant he gained a lot of friends. Of course, the Emo God would 'find himself' in art. He was always in the art room, painting or sculpting. Anubis was really good at the things he created, it was a hidden talent of his.
Texting back quickly, Duh, I wished the school day would fly by, so I could see him. My parents decided to enroll Anubis in Carter's grade, so I didn't get to see him all that much during the dreadful hours of school.
Waiting for his reply, I scrolled through my Instagram. Stopping at one picture posted by my friend Emma, I couldn't help but feel a tang of hurt by what I saw.
It was a simple photo of Emma, Liz, and another girl I didn't know by the name Bethany. They were sitting in the little coffee shop we use to go to all the time.
All cheers with my BFFs was the caption. All three were smiling, their happiness radiating through the photo. I knew moving to the States would mean a strain on my friendship with Emma and Liz, but I had a feeling that they were replacing me. I slowly scrolled past the photo, my eyes watering.
They were the only friends I had and they were already forgetting about me. Since Jenni made my life a living hell, I had trouble making friends.
I jumped when my phone vibrated in my hands. Can't wait.
I smiled at Anubis's response, rubbing my tears away. Taking a deep breath, I put my phone away and picked up my pencil.
Just this class and then the day would be over, I could make it through.

When the bell rung signaling the end of the school day, I couldn't get out of there fast enough. Packing up my backpack, I zoomed past my classmates to find Anubis. I knew he'd be in the art room since I recalled him telling me he was finishing up a painting he was constructing. Cutting through the school court yard, I hummed along to The 1975, my mind on other things than who was approaching me.
"Why hello Sadie."
I stopped in my tracks, letting out a sigh. "What the bloody hell do you want Jenni?"
I was beyond annoyed on how Jenni was able to pop up at almost any moment. She was standing in front of the door I need to go through in order to get to the art hallway. Bitch was waiting for me ¸ I realized. Her two friends were with her, nothing new there, but what was different was that they had a bigger girl with them. I recognized her, I think her name was Paula, and she was apart of the wrestling team. This is not going to end well.
"I see you know Anubis pretty well and I'm just here to tell you that you need to back off because he's my man."
I chuckled at her threat, wondering how someone could be so conceded.
"Sorry Jenni but you can't tell me what to do," I shot back, smirking. I knew I intimidated Jenni, which is why she probably involved Paula. She was trying to scare me with the other girl, too bad it didn't work.
"Listen you little bitch, I don't know who you think you are to talk to me like that. I can make your life a living hell if you don't listen to what I'm telling you!" Jenni was getting red in the face, half from anger and the other half from fear.
I didn't know why Jenni was so obsessed with Anubis, sure he was handsome, but he didn't fit the usual guys Jenni dated. She dated air-headed jocks for crying out loud!
"My life is already a living hell just looking at your caked face," I sneered, almost completely loosing my cool.
Back in England, I got into fist fights occasionally with girls like Jenni. I could feel myself itching for a fight, one good punch in and I knew this whole situation with Jenni would go away.
Just like I expected, Jenni took my bait.
Swinging at me with all she had, she planned on punching me.
She would've landed the hit, but I moved out of her way. Before she could react, I pulled my arm back and socked her hard on the nose.
Jenni immediately fell down on her butt, her hands cupping her bleeding nose. Fat tears were rolling down her red cheeks as she began sobbing. Her friends were so shocked that they just stood there looking at her.
"What are you waiting for?! Get her!" Jenni screamed. Her words made her friends snap out of their shock, all three springing into action. I dodged their attacks, landing some punches. Pushing past them, I ran into the school.
I could hear them chasing after me, making my legs pump faster as I desperately tried reaching the art room. Thankfully I was able to outrun them.
Running into the art room, I spotted Anubis.
"We need to go! NOW!" I screamed as I heard the girl's yells getting closer. Anubis, bless his heart, looked spooked but listened without question. Both of us bolted out the emergency exit in the art room, booking it down the road. After running for five minutes, Anubis stopped to catch his breath.
"Sadie, what the hell?" He gasped, leaning on his knees as he coughed.
Offering him my water bottle, I gave him a sheepish smile. "I got in a mini fight, sorry."
He just shook his head, a smirk on his face. Handing me back my water bottle, he looked at my bruising knuckles.
Anubis carefully held my hands as he assessed the damage, turning my hands over.
"I feel had at whoever crossed you Sadie Kane." He kissed my hands, before dropping them. I was blushing like an idiot, momentarily forgetting about how much my hands were hurting.
We began walking home, the chaos of Jenni Harts behind us. My heart rate calmed down and the roar of my heart beat stopped echoing in my ears. I looked up at the pink skies, noticing that the sun was slowly descending. Seeing it, it made me remember all that I had experienced. Being a magician and saving the world had changed me, I didn't know how to be a normal teenager anymore.
"Do you miss being a God?" I asked. Anubis chuckled, taking a hold of one of my hands. Lightly squeezing it, he stopped us from walking.
"No, I don't. I'm grateful your father invited me here, to be able to experience a normal mortal life."
He pushed a stray strand from my face, tucking it behind my ear before cupping cheek.
"I get to do this." Leaning down to reach me, Anubis kissed me.
I closed my eyes, kissing him back. He leaded the kiss, making my knees weak. At that moment, all the stress and annoyance I felt about not belonging melted as he kissed me.
With Anubis kissing me like this, all that mattered was him.
We pulled away slowly, Anubis kissing my forehead before taking my hand again.
He lead us home, walking ahead of me. I trailed behind him, squeezing his hand. Looking up at the pink skies, I felt like nothing could touch me.
I was happy.

I was able to sneak upstairs without running into either of my parents.
Hearing the tv downstairs as I walked into the upstairs bathroom, I made sure to lock the door behind me. Sitting on the side of the tube, I carefully tended to the cuts and bruises on my hands. Wrapping my hands, I knew my parents would immediately question me about my state. Sighing, I left the bathroom and headed into my room. Anubis stayed downstairs with my dad as he helped him do some restorations on the kitchen.
Laying on my bed, I listened to the movement downstairs.
The sound of the home phone ringing made my heart rate go up five notched. My mother picked it up, her hello reaching my room.
"Yes, this is Sadie Kane's mother…" I heard her say. I groaned into my pillow, cursing Jenni Harts a million times over. I knew it was her, I just knew.
I didn't bother tuning into the rest of the conversation my mother was having, I knew I was in deep shit.
"Sadie Kane get down here this instant!"
"Fuck you Jenni Harts," I mumbled under my breath as I got up from my bed and walked downstairs to face my crimes.
