Chapter 27: Too Many Interruptions

Adam groaned at his latest annoyance: his ringing phone. One more distraction I don't need, he thought to himself. Without looking, he smacked it, thinking he hung up the call. After a moment, he heard a small voice yelling, "Adam!"

Shit, I answered it, Adam thought. He lit the screen and hit speaker. "No need to yell, Greg, I'm here," he said.

"Well, you weren't saying anything," Greg replied.

Adam shook his head. "What's up?"

"We did it!"

Adam grunted at Greg's enthusiasm. "Congratulations," he deadpanned as Danny walked into his lab.

"We hit for the cycle!"

"What does that mean?"

"An accident, a homicide, a suicide, and a natural all in the same shift," Danny replied, causing Adam to grimace at the fact that someone else was there. "Congratulations."

"Thanks," Greg replied. "We almost thought we weren't going to get it… the natural is always the hardest, but we ended up having one right at the end of shift."

"That's good."

"You two realize you're celebrating the fact that at least 4 people died today, right?" Adam reminded them sharply.

Danny cut a glance at Adam.

"I know," Greg said. "Unfortunately, the natural was one of ours. New morgue attendant had an aneurysm that ruptured."

"No way of predicting that," Danny replied.

Adam huffed, causing Danny to look at him.

"Do you two think you could take this conversation elsewhere?" Adam asked, clearly quite annoyed.

"What crawled up your ass?" Greg asked.

"We'll step out," Danny said, taking Adam's phone with him.

Adam sighed in relief at the quasi-peace of the running machines of the lab, thankful that some of the distractions had been removed, so he could finally focus on the tasks at hand… all 30 of them…

"What's up with him?" Greg asked as Danny walked into his office.

"Business is kinda boomin' around here," Danny replied.

"Oh. So, he's really busy."

"Yeah. I'm guessin' he never meant to answer your call in the first place."

"Probably not."

Danny let the phone rest on his desk as he turned toward his computer.

"How's Miss Lucy?" Greg asked.

Danny smiled widely. "She's gettin' so big… and she's so smart, just like her dad…"

"Or her mom," Greg added.

"Yeah, I guess," Danny teased.

"I take it Lindsay's not there right now, huh?"

"Yeah, she's out in the field."

"She doing okay?"

"Yeah, she's fine. How are your two doin'?"

Greg groaned. "Just be glad you're only going to have one teenager at a time."

Danny chuckled. "That bad, huh?"

"Caden's trying out for football, as something to do until hockey starts. Alexa's still doing theater, but her performances are starting to happen off the stage. And she's constantly getting mad because if Caden doesn't run off any potential mate that comes her way, then they run away at finding out her father's a cop. Especially when his parents remind him that I killed a kid a few years ago."

"Not on purpose," Danny said.

"Yeah, well, they don't tell him that," Greg replied.

"Poor Alexa."

"Yeah, no kidding." Greg sighed. "Anyway, I should probably let you get back to work. Can you keep an eye on Adam for me? I'll text him later."

"Yeah, no problem," Danny said. "Have a good one."

"You too."

Danny hung up Adam's phone, standing up and walking back into the lab. Adam barely noticed as Danny dropped the phone beside him and walked away.
