It was show time and Elena was nervous again. She wondered if the British crowd would be different from the American one... What if no one liked them? She shook the though from her head as she and the rest of the band did their pre show high five rituals.
"I'm freaking out!" Caroline said, shuffling on the spot
"What?" Elena said "Caroline Forbes doesn't do scared."
"Have you seen how many people are here? This place is bigger than the last show."
Elena tried not to think about it. "It's going to be fine. We can do it."
Just then the rigger flashed the torch to the sound guys, it was time.
The house lights shut off and the crowd roared. Elena pulled the hood of her jacket up but left the zipper open, she slid Damon's sunglasses on and covered up her eye.
Someone handed her her bass and she walked out to her spot on stage right. It was weird but under Damon's sun glasses Elena felt confident. She felt untouchable.
They started the first song and Elena bounced around stage confidently playing her bass with a little bit of attitude.
Suddenly she could see why Damon wore these glasses all of the time. He could hide under them, she didn't realise before how easy it was to hide, she felt mysterious under these glasses, she felt badass.
When their set was over Elena waved to the crowd before she bounded off stage.
"What's got into you girl?" Matt laughed as he wiped his head on a fluffy towel
"What do you mean?" Elena asked innocently
"You were like a live wire tonight" Bonnie smiled, "Very un-Elena like."
Elena shrugged and gulped down some water from the bottle she had grabbed
"That was so amazing." Caroline clapped "They seemed to really love us."
Elena smiled "I'm going to cool off and then get a drink."
She left the rest of her band and went outside; she walked around the venue and found herself at the front doors. She flashed the men on the door her AAA pass and walked in the front doors. A few people were at the merch stand. She bypassed them and entered the floor space. The room was packed out now and excited chatter filled the air. Some punk music was playing in the background. She pushed her way to the bar and got a bottle of beer. The riggers and stage hands were putting the finishing touches to the stage-Taping down wires and cords, putting set lists down and bottles of beer and water for the band. After another ten minutes the music and lights cut out and there was a millisecond of silence before the crowd erupted into a pure dedicated frenzy. Elena couldn't help but cheer too as four fifths of DBM took their places on stage and crashed into their opening song. A moment later the hysteria heightened when Damon sauntered onto stage.
"London!" he yelled into the mic holding once arm in the air and the crowd roared in response. "Get those hands up." He commanded and they did it.
Well my dear what longs arms you have; all they better to hold you down, slap my wrists with that sweet consequence…
He needn't have bothered to sing because the crowd were screaming his words right back at him. Elena couldn't help but smile. Damon Salvatore was a God, well to this crowd he was.
She continued to observe him, watching how he moved and how the crowd reacted to him. By the third song he was sweating so much he removed his top and it wasn't just the girls who went wild. Damon was adored, there was no denying it.
"it's been a while, London." Damon rasped into the mic between songs "Have you missed us?"
The cheers were deafening. Elena noted how Damon engaged the crowd, he kept it simple but it was enough to keep them hanging on his every word. He didn't play the left side off against the right side, comparing what side could sing louder, no he wasn't cheesy; he was just flawless.
When the show was over Elena made her way back around to the tour buses. Already fans were hanging around to get a photo or an autograph with DBM. Elena pushed past some of them on her way to their rider.
"Hey." A girl said loudly "Your band were really great."
Elena did a double take. Oh…she was talking to her.
Elena walked back a few steps to her. "Thank you." She said
"Is this your first time in London?" the girl asked
"Yes, it's great. Your city is beautiful." She said
"Can we get a photo with you?" the girl asked
Elena blinked "Uh…sure…" she said stunned. This was new.
Elena smiled with the girl as her friend took a photo then she took one with another girl.
"Thank you so much." The girl smiled
"You're welcome." Elena said hesitating "I better get back…"
"Oh sure." The girl said "Hey, before you go…what's it like being on tour with Damon Salvatore?"
Elena laughed. What could she say? "It's really cool. It's great that they let us come along with them."
The girl bit her lip "but…what's he really like?"
Elena shrugged. "He's really something." She said honestly
The girls giggled, she'd obviously said the right thing. She smiled and walked back to the rider.
The bus call wasn't until 2am and it was just past midnight. She contemplated getting some food but settled for a few more beers with Caroline and Bonnie.
"Elijah said Klaus has arranged a photo op for us tomorrow before the show, how amazing is that?" Caroline said
Before they could answer there was a commotion outside. They peered out the door of their rider; it looked like Stefan Salvatore was being mobbed.
"Poor guy." Bonnie smiled as the girl who was talking to Stefan looked like she was about to burst into happy tears.
"It must be crazy being so…" Caroline struggled for the right word.
"Adored?" Elena offered
"Yeah." Caroline agreed. "Adored."
Elena looked back at Stefan. He was signing everything people were throwing at him, cds, concert tickets, body parts.
They watched as the rest of DBM came outside too. Kol was the busiest so far hugging nearly every girl he met, guitar players were always popular.
Damon was last out. He looked wreaked but signed anything people handed him.
"I'm going to get some air." Elena said casually getting up
"Sure you are." Bonnie sniggered and Elena elbowed her on the way out
Feeling brave from the alcohol in her system, Elena walked towards Damon.
He looked up from the chest he was signing.
"Hey." he said
"Hey." She echoed clutching a bottle of beer in her hand "Sorry to interrupt." She added to the girl he had signed "But I need to give you your glasses back."
Damon waved his hand dismissively "You still need them, don't you?"
"I guess but…don't you need them back?" she asked
Damon put his arm around the girl as her friend took their photograph and then left with thanks.
"I'll get them back if I need them I'm sure." He said before a guy clapped him on the shoulder
"Great show, mate." He enthused
"Thanks, man." Damon nodded "You want a photo?"
"Do you mind?" the guy handed Elena his camera.
"No, sure." She said taking the photo and handing him his camera back
Damon took out a cigarette and lit up, the last girl approached him.
"Hey." She said nervously
"Hi." Damon said
"I'm a huge fan." She said awkwardly "I've been to four of your shows."
"Wow." Damon said "Thank you."
"I made you this." The girl said handing him something
Damon took the package and opened the tissue paper.
Elena leaned closer; it was a bracelet, clearly hand woven leather with a small wooded skull linked through it.
"That's really cool. Thank you." He said "Did you make it?"
"Yes." The girl blushed scarlet as Damon put his cigarette in his mouth and tried to fasten it over his wrist.
"Fuck." He mumbled around his cigarette. "a little help here?"
He held his wrist out and Elena carefully knotted the bracelet onto him. She unnecessarily brushed her fingers down his arm and she let go on him.
Damon took a photo with the girl and then gave her a rare hug, she left them practically skipping.
"What time is it?" Damon asked her as he flicked ash from his cigarette
"It's coming up on twenty til two." She said checking her watch
"No time for a shower then." He sighed
"I guess not." Elena said, she wasn't sure what else to say now. All she knew is she didn't want to leave yet.
Damon reached out and grabbed her bottle of beer.
"Hey." She complained as he gulped it down, a smile playing on her lips.
She wrestled the bottle from his hands playfully but it slipped from her grip and smashed onto the ground.
"Oops." Damon said smugly before he took a drag from his cigarette
Feeling bold Elena swiped the cigarette from his lips and spun around from him.
Damon grabbed her arm as she took a drag. "Hey." He complained as she struggled to get away. "Don't be doing that."
"what?" Elena said holding the cigarette as far from him as she could, she blew the smoke in his face.
"Smoking." Damon said grabbing her around the waist and backing her into the wall "It's a disgusting habit, you know."
Damon took the cigarette from her and instead of grabbing it back she boldly threw her arms around his neck and pulled him to her. After a second of initial hesitation she felt Damon respond against her lips. He threw the cigarette to the floor and moved his hands to her neck.
They broke apart quickly when the venue doors banged open and Logan came out laughing loudly followed by Stefan who was pulling a suitcase after him. They both looked at her and Damon but said nothing and carried on onto their bus.
The engine of Damon's large tour bus roared to life and Elena saw him rock on his heels.
"I better…" he said nodding at the bus
"Uh- yeah." Elena said quickly "I…better go…too."
But he never heard the end because he was already gone.
