The room he had stepped into looked like one designed for torture. There was oil splattered across the walls reminding Andy of blood. The smell of gasoline was in the air as well as the sounds of sparks.
He could see the woman as she stood infront of a car. A car he had now come to recognize from photograph's as…
The Hudson Hornet.
She's... Going to kill a world famous racer… He felt his heart sink, if he wasn't careful they all could get killed.
He could see Rip and Dusty in hiding positions, waiting for a signal.
They want me to act on this…
The racecar turned doctor seemed to be dazed, groaning in pain and from the shock. The woman sneered.
"Not giving up so fast are we?" She mocked, throwing a switch.
All three cringed as the sound of screaming filled the air.
Something inside them snapped... More specifically, something inside Andy snapped.
He lunged forward tackling her, bringing the muzzle of his rifle around her neck pulling back hard as she gagged.
Dusty flew over, shutting off the device. "Got it-"
A gun went off.
For a moment no one knew who's it was as at this point. Andy had been sitting on her, holding his gun against her neck in his rage trying to choke her with it.
But then he fell off of her screaming, blood gushing from a wound on his leg.
No... Oh no….
She tried to get up, but Rip dove for Andy's fallen weapon training it on her head. One thing I learned about being a farm boy… This always gets them to stop. She glared at him.
"One move and you're toast." He had no qualms in killing a human, he hated most of them but this was a different case.
These humans he could stand. "Cropduster, get 'em outta here, I'll watch the old coot and tie up the psycho..."
Dusty nodded picking up Andy as he groaned in pain. "Hang in there..."
"It hurts... Make it stop…" He shuddered, the pain was like nothing he had experienced before. He had grazed himself with bullets before when learning but never had a direct wound like this.
"I know it hurts kiddo... Just hold on we're gonna make it stop…" The racer murmured coming in for a landing. "DOTTIE!"
The mechanic rushed forward. "What hap-Oh my goodness." She looked Andy over. She could barely see the injury from how much blood was coming out, he was losing it fast.
Think back to those textbooks you read before this... He's losing a lot of blood... It had to have nicked an artery or a large number of veins… "What happened?"
"He got shot…"
She sighed a bit shakily. This was something that she couldn't fix so easily. "He needs emergency surgery... But... The hospital's so far…"
Brody came forward looking at his son. Andy looked weakly in his dad's direction.
"... Made it count…"
I'm not losing him...I can't…
There has to be a way to fix this…
Come on think… Both Dottie and Brody's eyes fell on the infamous machine they had come for as an idea came to both their minds.
"Dusty, bring him over here, lie him down!" Dottie ordered rushing to the controls typing in a setting.
Dusty carefully laid the teenager down infront of it. "It's gonna be okay…"
Andy nodded feeling exhausted. Whatever they had planned he didn't care at this point. He was already kicking himself for not just killing the woman where she had stood.
There's a reason you couldn't…
I can't kill people... That's not me…
Dottie worked quickly with what she had to make a cast to act as a shield of sorts, hooking Andy up to the machine. "We can set it halfway... Right?"
"Yes... and it should do what we think it will." Brody nodded, silently hoping that it would work.
They both had an idea of how much of an emergency this was. He was losing too much blood, and the hospital? It wasn't an option. He would likely be dead before they even got there.
This was their only option.
Dottie typed in "plane" and nodded to Brody as the machine warmed up.
Maya came forward holding the boy's head in her lap. "... Do it."
They flipped the switch.
-Andy-
I heard it...The switch was flipped as suddenly everything increased to ten times the pain. My leg felt like it was burning right off of me.
"A-AUUUGH!" I tried to get up to get away, but Maya and Dusty had a good grip on me, keeping me in place. .
"Easy now... It's okay... Hang in there..." I couldn't help it, the screams kept coming. I couldn't look at what was happening to me. It just hurt so bad.
This is what they had all gone through? I couldn't imagine it before... Now I was living it.
"Alright... DONE!" Dottie said as the machine was turned off. I panted a bit trying to catch my breath. Everyone was looking at me with this weird look.
Dusty helped me back up into a sitting position as I saw what happened.
I felt a knot in my throat as I saw it.
My leg was completely mechanical now. Panels of silvery metal replacing skin, screws had formed to keep it together. I put my hand over it noting how shaky they were. It was warm, like the engines of the machines I had come to know as friends.
This was a part of me now.
"Andy..?"
I looked up... and grinned. "They called me a machine... If the leg fits... I'll wear it."
Some chuckled. Dad looked relieved. Dusty messed up my hair. "Do me a favor... don't scare us again like that." He said as he helped me stand. I was still feeling a little woozy and wound up using him for support.
"Deal-" There was the sound of something hitting the floor as I craned my neck.
There was a wheel with a support coming out of the back of my new leg.
"... It comes with it's own built it crutch ..?" I asked.
"Landing gear.. just like mine." Dusty blinked.
Dottie grinned a little. "I set it to plane... figured it would be the best one for you.."
I smiled. "Thanks..."
Maya came over and... smacked me upside the head as hard as she could.
"OW! What the HECK!?" If I wasn't raised to never hit a girl I would have smacked her back.
"What the HECK happened in there that warranted THAT!?" She snapped, gesturing to the leg.
Me and Dusty both let out sighs.
It was time for the explanation.
-N/A-
"She had the Hudson Hornet…"
Lightning gave the two a horrified look as his head snapped up to where they had come from. "Doc…" He murmured.
"He's okay…" Dusty said quickly as the racecar relaxed a little. "It would've been a lot worse."
"She did it right in front of us... and I just snapped…" Andy explained. "I just... I couldn't take it anymore. I fought her to the ground and was trying to choke her with my gun when she shot me. I didn't even realize she had her gun out, and Dusty shut off her torture device before it could kill him…"
"Nearly killed you though..."
The boy with some help knelt and knocked on the knee of his mechanical leg. "It's not gonna do that again that's for sure."
"... Excuse me for a moment." Lightning said before running as fast as he could to where Doc was.
He found his mentor calm but recovering from the shock of it all. "Doc…?" He asked quietly. "You okay?"
"I'm fine... Just glad to still be alive." Doc replied giving him a tired look. "Surprised the shock didn't kill me... Not as young as I used to be."
"Dusty shut it off in time I think..." Lightning nodded, surprised but relieved his mentor was safe now. He would be devastated if something happened to the old racecar.
He nodded. "And the kid?"
"He's okay... They used that machine to do some good... He's gonna be just fine."
"Good... Let's get out of here."
Lightning nodded. He still had one job to do in this mission before it was over. "Speakin' of... Where's-"
Ripslinger shot passed them. "Don't ask." He called over his shoulder. No one needs to know what I did with that nut…
"... Well then." Lightning blinked before leading the way out. "Let's finish this."
They made it back to the others. The last part of the mission was simple compared to the rest.
Lightning would make a run back to the territory and pick up Olivia. They all knew the secret her necklace held now, that it was literally the key to being changed back. It was the microchip hidden inside that held the code.
Andy, while they were waiting on Lightning, was getting help adjusting to his leg from Dusty. "You hanging in there okay?" His friend asked.
The boy nodded. "Just sore... But it's not as stiff." The wheel was helping keep him balanced as well, as he took a few solo steps on his own.
"Good... and Andy... here.." He took off the goggles and replaced them around Andy's neck. The boy gave a confused look.
"Why are you giving me those? Their yours-"
"Andy..." Dusty smiled. "I appreciate the gift... don't ever think I didn't... But I'm not gonna need them soon and they'll just get ruined when I change back... These will be yours." He took off his gloves and handed them to the boy who pocketed them for now. "Those too... The scarf I hope you don't mind I was gonna give to Olivia." He gave a sheepish grin.
"She'll love it."
There was a sound of a door closing as Lightning came back with Olivia. He set down the girl who ran over to Dusty and Andy hugging them both.
The two knelt down bringing their arms around her. "It's okay…" Dusty murmured noticing she was trying not to cry.
"We're okay... It's all gonna be okay." Andy added softly stroking her hair.
"I just don't wanna see you guys hurtin'..." She sniffled. Andy hugged her tightly before standing up letting her have a moment with her 'other brother'.
Dusty kept knelt to her level tipping her head up. "Livvie... It's not goodbye... I'll still be around... and you'll always be my little sister." He said to her as Olivia hugged him tightly, burying her face in his jacket.
He held her close, rocking her a little, knowing this would be the last time he would be able to do so. "Love you sis…"
"I love you too…"
He set her down before taking off his scarf placing it around her neck. "This is yours." He ruffled her hair as she looked at it with a look of surprise.
"But…"
"I want you and Andy to have them back because I won't be able to use them as a plane... and I don't want them to get wrecked... Can you promise to take good care of it?" He winked. "My sister got it for me."
Olivia grinned. "I promise." She took off her necklace holding it tightly... Before running over to Dottie giving her one last hug as well.
The forklift smiled patting her head. "Thanks kiddo..."
"Welcome." She took a step back before handing it to her brother as he cracked open the locket.
There was a green microchip inside. He went over to the machine. "Who's first?' He asked, listening to the instructions Brody gave him on how to re-install it.
"...I will." Lightning came forward. Maya hugged him quickly.
He hugged her back. "Hey... I expect a rematch of last week's race ya hear?" He said to her with a smirk.
She grinned. "Alright, you're SO on." She said before helping him get hooked up.
Lightning gave a nod.
Andy flipped the switch, watching as the change began.
Lightning fell to his knee's crying out, as his body began to change, form shifting, clothes and skin to metal and paint, shoes to tires... The cries of pain became the sound of an engine revving.
He looked at himself in the reflective metal of the hangar and revved his engine loudly as it echoed.
"KA-CHOW!"
With that everyone cheered. In soon enough time the machines got their original bodies back.
The last one... was Brody. He fell to his knee's panting, feeling his heart racing.
What he didn't expect was his son to kneel with him and hug him tightly.
"... I love you." Andy murmured. Brody smiled hugging his son close to him.
"Love you too son." He said quietly, ruffling his hair a little.
Olivia squealed running over, practically tackling her father and brother. "DADDY!" She laughed.
"Olive!" He brought her into the embrace grinning at both of his children, cherishing being able to hold them close again. To be able to be near them and not worry of hurting them.
"Kids... I'm glad it's over now…"
Andy grinned. "Not quite over... You still got mom to worry about."
Brody gave a sheepish look. "I can only imagine how she's going to react."
"Yeah... and how she's gonna react to phase two.."
Andy got strange looks as he uttered this.
"Phase two?"
"... Proving to the world that this is our world too…"
Andy's eyes narrowed in determination.
"Becoming the revolution."
