Sarah was waiting anxiously for her family to return, she had hesitated a bit when Lightning had come for her daughter, but she knew it was important… and trusted that her husband would watch out for their children.
She had been hoping for the best.
Brody walked up, his daughter by his side, holding his hand. Andy had hung back deciding it would be easier if Brody explained what had happened to him first before showing.
"Sarah…" Brody called as he came into view.
Sarah's eyes went wide before she ran to him throwing her arms around her husband. "Brody!"
He laughed hugging her and spun her a bit. "Oh Sarah…!" He buried his face in her hair.
She sniffled a little as she tried not to cry, she was just so happy and relieved.
"Brody…" She kissed him.
Brody relaxed, kissing her, both closing their eyes.
I have my husband back..
I'm home…
They stayed like this for a short time, enjoying the moment, enjoying each other's presence.
Pulling apart gently Brody held his wife close resting his chin atop her head. "Sarah… My darling Sarah…" He smiled sighing in content.
Sarah smiled leaning into him. "Oh Brody…" Her smile faded into a bit of a worried look as she glanced around. "Where's Andy?" She asked.
Brody winced at this question. He knew it was coming and he knew how his wife was with their kids. She nearly had a heart attack the first time Andy angered a harvester and that time he had done it on purpose too.
"Sarah… You need to promise not to panic and freak out, okay?" He asked, placing his hands on her shoulders giving them a gentle squeeze.
She nodded taking a deep breath releasing it slowly as she relaxed a little. "I promise… Wife's honor.."
Brody looked to where his son was hiding. "Andy."
The boy stepped out walking over to his parents as he came into full view.
Sarah's eyes went wide as she gave a small gasp. She looked her son over more so his new limb than anything else. "What… happened?" She asked softly, trying to keep calm on the inside. She wanted to find whoever did this to her son and bash their head in.
"I got shot trying to save someone else." Andy explained looking a little guilty. "I just snapped… and…" He trailed off glancing away.
"Dottie and I used the machine to change his leg into a machine limb because of how massive the blood loss was. He's only standing here because of it." Brody explained, putting an arm around his son.
What surprised Sarah more than anything was Andy leaning into his dad's hold wrapping his arms around him.
She hadn't seen him get that close in awhile, save Andy sitting on his wing during Brody's time as a plane.
She smiled tearing up as she hugged her son and husband. "Oh thank goodness." She cried but was laughing as well. "You're okay... You're both okay…"
"We're all okay mommy!" Olivia squeaked. Brody scooped her up into his arms holding his daughter close.
"Hee…" She giggled curling up.
"And this is only the start…" Andy said quietly.
"T-the start!? I thought…" Sarah trailed off before sighing. She should have known her son was planning something else. He had changed so much in the last several months that nothing surprised her anymore. "... I should have known…"
"Don't worry...This outcome is for all of us." Brody assured, giving his son a wink.
The boy smiled nodding. "Yeah..." He gave a broad grin.
"Phase two is proving that humans and machines can live and work together side by side! That we don't have to keep into a human territory if we want to move!"
Sarah looked to her husband before mulling over it. The idea of leaving where both she and her husband had grown up was a strange thought, but as she thought about it more she liked the idea. New scenery… If it happened they could live wherever they wanted.
"We could move to Propwash…" She mused. "We could have a bigger house… Big enough to have all kinds of guests…"
"And we could race… and work together."
Brody ruffled his daughter's hair. "And Little Miss Olive can be with the planes."
Olivia's eyes got wide and she squealed a little. "Yes yes yes!"
"You kids deserve to have better… We all deserve it…" Sarah murmured hugging her son.
Andy grinned. "Aw ma…" He got an idea. "Hey… If this works out maybe I could be a Jolly Wrench… Just like Dusty and the Skipper and Sparky." He mused aloud.
"And maybe Olive can learn mechanics from Dottie." Brody suggested.
"Yeah! I could fix cars and planes and…" She grinned evilly at her brother. "Andy's leg!"
"HEY!" He protested. "Thanks for the vote of confidence Olivia!"
She grinned. "Better to be safe then sorry!"
"Alright, alright settle down!" The parents laughed.
Finally...Things are looking up…
-
Weeks passed as things went quiet. No one knew what happened to the head of HEAMIC or rather Miranda Warden, except for Lightning Doc and Mater but they were under oath to never speak of it.
All they could say was some old friends had taken care of it and left it at that.
In Propwash, things were going slowly back to normal. Dusty training with Skipper and taking care of crops, going back to bringing the Hayes family food when he could. Playing with Olivia when he could… and still braking parts occasionally, prompting Dottie to get annoyed some days.
For Andy he was starting to study the history of the machines, but these history books were rather heavy and long, it look him a long time to finish a chapter on one.
"Why not look it up on the internet?" He had been asked one day by Chug, who had let the boy hang around along with his sister at the Fill N Fly while Olivia was watching Dottie work.
The boy was tired and just looked up from his book, giving a dazed look. "Internet's for rich folk." He said before his head dropped back down.
The fuel truck rolled his eyes. The boy was stubborn, even if he could be good for helping plan out tricks to pull on Dotte.
This is just too important... Andy felt tired though.
Before he realized it, he was fast asleep, using the much too big book for a pillow, curled up not caring if his landing gear got tangled up in his good leg.
Inside the shop, Olivia was sitting on the edge of a table watching Dottie work on some broken parts. "Who are those for?" She asked, looking at them a little closer.
"Well they're smaller than what I have on hand usually...Take a guess." The forklift said, giving the girl a grin.
"...Andy?" She guessed.
"Yep." She nodded. "These are mostly for when he does have a growth spurt, just in case that leg doesn't grow with him. It may be like us but I've never seen a meld of machine and human before… So it's kind of guessing. These are mostly bracers meant to add height, then spare gears and such for the internal system." Dottie explained.
"Oh, I get it! So he won't be short forever!"
If Andy was awake, he would've given the two a dirty look for the lack of confidence in being unable to keep his leg in one piece, (though in the weeks passed he had come close to proving them right) but as it was, he just let out a loud snore.
Olivia cringed. "Think there's a way to make him stop snoring too?"
"Livvie, there's something's even I can't fix."
The little girl sighed, propping her head up on her hand. "Guess that's too much to hope for."
Wish we could live here forever but it's just visitin'... She thought with a pout.
Please find a way Andy… I like being here with my friends…
At least they don't think I'm weird…
There was some noise outside as Andy let out a surprised yell… Which resulted in a surprised yelp from Dusty from getting a startled human lunging on him still half asleep.
Dottie and Olivia peered out from inside and shook their heads as the boys gave each other bewildered looks.
"... Hi?"
"... Sup?"
… Note to self… Dottie thought. Make more spare parts for both of them.
