A/N: Here's another chapter for you guys! Sorry it has been awhile since I've posted anything. There has just been a lot going on. Thanks naley12 for giving me motivation to write a couple of chapters. I hope you enjoy and I will try to post another chapter in the next few days. Please review and let me know what you think!
It had been a week since Nathan had been over to the house. Haley had started her teaching job and had been really busy making lesson plans and getting her class in order. Mark had started kindergarten and Kenzie was going to daycare close by. Since this had been such a crazy week, Peyton had decided to delay her trip for another couple of weeks before she came to visit. It was now Friday and Haley was finishing up her last class of the day. She was teaching English at Tree Hill High School and loved it. She had just handed out a reading assignment for the weekend when there was a knock on her door. She walked over and opened it to find Nathan standing there. "Nathan, what are you doing here?" she asked.
"I stopped by to help out my friend with some basketball stuff and was on my way out. I know you are probably busy with your class, but I was wondering if you and the kids would like to hang out tomorrow," he replied.
She smiled, "Class is almost over. Do you mind waiting in the back while I finish going over their assignment?" He nodded and walked to the back of the room.
Many of the students were watching him as he walked by them. The girls were all whispering how hot he was, while the guys were talking about his basketball stats. "Mrs. James, you know Nathan Scott," one of her students stated.
"Class, can we get back to the assignment. Yes, I know Nathan, but you should be more worried about this assignment. Now as I was saying, you will need to read the first two chapters and write a two page paper…" she explained the assignment right as the bell was ringing, "See you Monday."
Nathan waited until all the students left before going to the front and sitting in one of the desks. "Wow, Mrs. James if I had you as my teacher in high school, I'm not sure I would have been able to focus on any of my assignments," he joked.
"Very funny. Now what is this about tomorrow? You want to hang out with a single mom and two kids on a Saturday. And for a second, I thought you had a life," she grinned.
Nathan smirked, "Well what can I say, I admire the company. I mean Mark and I haven't hung out all week. I hear tomorrow is going to be a pretty day, and I'm sure he would love to go shoot some hoops."
"I get it. You really just want to hang out with a five year old. Man, you need to get new friends," Haley added.
"I love hanging out with Mark, but his mom is pretty amazing too. And don't let me forget the little cutie that practically has me wrapped around her finger already. So what do you say about meeting me in the morning at the café around 9?" he said.
"Alright, we'll see you in the morning. For the record, Mark has missed hanging out with you too," she answered.
"Just Mark?" he pressed.
"Kenzie too I guess," she paused, "Alright, we've all missed you."
Nathan smiled as he walked over and gave her a hug before whispering in her hair, "I've missed you too."
Nathan walked into his house and decided to go take a quick shower before dinner. He was in a great mood since leaving the school. He had been thinking of Haley all week but kept his distance because he knew she would be busy. That didn't stop him from missing her, which was new for him. The old Nathan wouldn't have thought twice about a girl, much less a mom with two kids, but he loved hanging out with them. Mark was an amazing kid and Kenzie was beautiful like her mother. What surprised him most was the attraction he felt towards Haley. There was just something about her that drew him in. He knew that she wasn't ready for a relationship and he respected that. After all, he didn't want to start something with her yet until he had figured things out in Los Angeles.
He knew that he would need to go back to Los Angeles in less than a month, but the thought of leaving made him cringe. He was serious when he said he had considered retiring. He knew he needed to make his mind up before he went back, but he was dreading it. Basketball had been his life, without it, who was he. Then an image of Haley playing with Mark and Kenzie popped into his mind. Maybe he could have a future with her or at least a friendship where he could be a part of their lives. Would she even want him in her future?
He finished his shower and walked into the kitchen to find his brother looking over some papers. "What are you doing back? I thought you and Brooke were still in New York," he said walking past his brother.
"Brooke is still in New York working on some designs. I'm just here for the weekend. What's up with you? I'm surprised you are even home. I figured you were with Haley," Luke replied.
"I'm having dinner with mom at the café in about an hour. I just came home to get a shower," he stated, "Why would I be with Haley?"
Luke laughed, "I don't know, maybe because you like her. I think she would be good for you. Although it might be a little tough to do long distance, she might be worth it though."
"We're not dating, and I wouldn't put her through a long distance relationship. She's been through enough crap as it is. Besides, she deserves someone way better than I could ever be. Plus, I'm only here for another month," he responded.
"So that's it. You're just enjoying your time here and then you'll go back to LA and forget about her," Luke pressed.
Nathan groaned, "Damnit Luke, just drop it. I could never just forget about her, but I can't be with her either."
"Look, I'm just saying that you should let her make the decision on whether or not to be with you. Don't sell yourself short. You're not the same guy you were in high school and college. If it is the long distance thing that scares you, at least just talk to her about it. After all, you have a month to see where things go for you guys. Right now enjoy the time you have," Luke said.
"I just don't know what is happening. Ever since I've been back, I've thought about retiring. Basketball just isn't what it was to me anymore. I still love the game, but I don't want it to be all that I have," he confessed.
Luke sighed, "Follow your heart. Maybe retiring is what's best. I don't know. I will say that Tree Hill will always be home no matter what. Sometimes our dreams change though from what we thought we wanted to what we do want. You can still have basketball, with or without the NBA. You could always coach or be involved with the sport in other ways. The choice is yours. I will support whatever decision you decide."
"I've still got a month to decide," he replied, "Now enough mushy stuff. Are you coming to dinner with me and mom or not?" Luke just laughed as he hit his brother upside the head before walking out the door to the car.
