The room echoed with her call for help and slowly silence took over. Natalie could feel her throat begin to constrict from her scream and a sense of exhaustion began to wear her down. All of the build up that she just did to call for help took up most of the energy she had been using to focus on her wound. Now, she just wanted to lay here and close her eyes. The pain had not diminished and now all she wanted was to allow this to overtake her. No more pain. All of this would be over if she allowed it. But, in her mind a battle was ensuing. She wanted to give up, yet that stubbornness was forbidding her from doing so. Natalie knew that, despite all she had been through, she still had a family here. Aunt Clara, Marina, Bobby, Dean and Sam were her family now. No matter how much she wanted to give up, she knew that she had to pull through this for them. She owed all of them at least a good fight for survival.
The door soon was forced open and it bouncing off of the wall. "Nad?!"
Natalie could hear Sam calling out her name and she closed her eyes in relief. "...s-sam...sam!" Natalie croaked, descending into a coughing fit at the itchiness in her throat and could hear the panicked shuffling of feet coming from the front of the house as it gradually made its way to her.
Sam appeared in the entryway to the kitchen, his eyes widening in panic at the sight of Natalie. "Nad!" Sam made his way over to Natalie and knelt down next to her. His eyes scanning her body until they landed on her bloodied hand covering her side. "Dean!" Sam called out.
Dean ran into the kitchen only to stop suddenly when he saw Natalie's condition. Dean took a breath then knelt down next to Sam, his eyes focusing on Natalie's side, "Oh god, Nad." Dean moved his hand over to her bloodied one, "Okay, let us take a look at it."
Natalie sucked in a breath as Dean gently pried her hand away from her wound. She could feel the flow of her blood beginning to pick up it's pace and the pain grew deeper. She bit down on her lip, letting out a strained groan. Dean slowly pulled his hand away and looked over at Sam, whose eyes were filled with shock.
"We gotta take care of this." Sam said off offhandedly.
Dean shook his head, looking down once again at Natalie. "Should we call Cas?"
"Dean, we can't get a hold of him and what makes you think he will be able to help her anyways. I mean if he couldn't help Bobby..."
"You're right, we don't have time. We need to, uh..." Dean looked up and scanned the room, trying to buy some time in order to figure out what they needed do next. While scanning the room, he didn't realized that he was putting to much pressure against Natalie's side until she let out a scream. Dean retracted his hands, realizing what he did. "Sorry Nad...we need to get her off of the floor." Dean said, getting up and wiping the kitchen table clean of its contents. Natalie flinched as the various objects made loud impacts on the floor. "Sam, can you pick her up?"
Sam nodded, sliding one arm under her legs and the other under the upper part of her back. Natalie gripped onto Sam's collar with her bloodied hand, silently bracing herself for what was to come. Sam took a moment to gather himself then gently, but swiftly, lifted Natalie into his arms. Natalie tried her best to hold it in, but a guttural scream slipped past her lips.
"Sorry, Nad." Sam gently whispered, as he set her down on the table. Natalie felt her body fill to the brim with a searing pain and she rolled over to her good side, pressing her hand back against her wound. Sam looked up at Dean, both of them to occupied with panic to think straight. "Dean?" Sam asked, among Natalie's pained cries.
Dean ran a hand through his hair, trying to clear his mind enough to come up with a rational plan. Releasing a breath, Dean leaned closer to Natalie wound and pulled her hand away, trying his best to examine the wound. But, every time he tried to touch it to get a better look, Natalie would move away and cry out. Dean quickly took off his jacket and then slid out of his inner shirt and tried to brace it against her side, but, Natalie continued to fight him.
"...d-dean...please...leave it." Natalie begged, not wanting him to touch it for fear it would make the pain worsen.
Dean looked at Natalie, his eyes filled with panic and empathy. "Nad...we need to try and stop the bleeding. Just move your hand away a little bit..." Dean pressed his shirt against her side and then moved her hand over the garment to keep it in place.
"Okay, Sam." Dean said, looking over at his brother. "Alright, stay here with Nad. I'm going back to the car to get the med kit." Dean noticed Sam wasn't paying attention, and looked like he was in some sort of daze. Dean hit Sam's shoulder, snapping him out of his trance. "Sam, stay focused okay? Stay with her. I'll be right back."
Sam nodded silently, giving Dean little reassurance that he would be able to handle this situation while he was gone. He could feel Dean's eyes burning into him,and he knew that he had to snap himself back to reality. "Dean. Go." Sam ordered. Dean casted Sam a hesitant look, before walking out of the kitchen.
Sam walked around the table and picked up Dean's jacket. He quickly folded it into a small bundle and gently lifted Natalie's head up, placing it underneath, and laid her head back down. "Why did you wander off, Nad?" Sam asked, taking off his own jacket and setting it on the kitchen counter.
"...I guess it's what I do. Go around and get myself...into trouble." Natalie winced as Sam pressed his hand against the shirt, keeping an even pressure against her wound.
"Just need to hang in there, Nad." Sam looked over at her, seeing her eyes closing. He reached over and gently tapped the side of her face, "Hey, Nad. Come on stay with me alright. Stay with me."
Natalie groaned at Sam's tapping, she just wanted all of this to be over. She felt so exhausted to the point that simply giving up and dying would be her best option in this moment. Natalie could feel Sam's hand against her cheek, prompting her to open her eyes. He was looking down at her, his expression showed that he was trying to stay positive and to not think of the grim possible outcomes but his eyes were different. His eyes showed only fear and pain. Pain at seeing her in such a condition like this and fear. Fearful that he might actually lose her.
That very thought came to the forefront of Sam's mind and his face extorted into an expression of unbearable pain. He began to think about how it would effect everyone around him. How would Bobby handle the news? Her sister and Aunt? Dean would undoubtedly carry a large portion of guilt on his shoulders. He would blame himself, thinking that he could have done something to prevent this, when that wasn't the case. But, Sam knew that if Natalie didn't make it, he wouldn't know what to do with himself.
Thinking back on it now, when he first met her, Sam never thought that she would be a vital part of his life. She never judged him with the whole demon blood fiasco, she never gave him crap, though he knew when she was pissed at him, and most importantly, Natalie always had this unwavering faith in him. Even when Dean doubted him, Natalie was always there to help pick up the pieces. In a sense, she had become an unexpected confidante to him and he didn't want to lose that bond. He didn't want to lose her.
Sam had been caught up in his thoughts, he didn't notice Dean walking in with David and Jake. He watched as David quickly made his way over to the table, and he gently pushed Sam out of his way to Natalie's wound. Sam moved enough to give David space, but remained close to Natalie's side.
David took hold of the shirt and pulled it away from her wound, stopping midway as the blood began to seep out. "Alright, Nad. I'm gonna have to try and get the bullet out."
David continued to examine the wound, realizing that he would have to cut away part of the shirt that was surrounding the wound. He took off his bag and pulled out a pair of scissors. He lifted the bottom of the shirt up and began to cut the fabric, slowing his pace once he reached the outer rim of the wound. Once the fabric was detached, he quickly pulled it away and went back into his bag and took out a pair of tweezers.
David looked up at Sam and Dean, "You might want to make sure you guys keep her still. I don't have anything to dull the pain, and..." Sam and Dean looked at each other then down at Natalie, who seemed uneasy about the whole situation.
Natalie gazed at David and began to shake her head. "No...no don't. Just..l-leave it in, please."
Sam took a hold of Natalie's hand, "Nad, it's alright. It's going to be fine."
Natalie continued to shake her head and tried to get off of the table. Dean and Sam gently pushed her back down on the table, with her fighting against them the whole time. Dean secured his hands firmly on her shoulders, with Sam keeping a firm grip on her hand.
David took a breath, "Alright, here I go." David slowly brought the tweezers at the opening of her wound and hesitated for a moment. He was trying to prepare himself for any kind of reaction Natalie might have to this. David looked over at Jake, who had one hand on Natalie's leg, and gave him a small nod. David pressed his two fingers from his other hand near the wound, pulling at the skin slightly, and then submerged the instrument into the wound.
Natalie's reaction was instantaneous. Her legs bulked out, one of them kicking Jake in the chest, her body tried scooting away from David only to be stopped by Dean holding her down. Her screams were deafening to all four of them, making David hesitate from going any further. But, he needed to get the bullet out to prevent her from getting an infection. Jake pulled himself together from the kick and firmly grasped onto Natalie's legs, to ensure they wouldn't move. David quickly went back to the task and began to swiftly search the wound for the bullet.
Natalie closed her eyes, feeling her head throbbing from screaming so much and the pain. She could feel everything David was doing and the deeper he went the worse the pain got. Her grip on Sam's hand tightened and her body jerked at David's prodding. She opened her eyes and looked up at Sam, feeling the hot tears pouring from her eyes.
"Please! S-sam...make him stop...please!" Natalie begged only to stop as her body continued jerking violently from David's treatment. Sam tightened his grip on her hand, trying his best to keep his composure under control. Just kill me now. Natalie just wanted to die. No pain like this was worth living through. She was being selfish right now and she knew it. At the beginning, she promised to try and get through this for everyone she loved, but this was just to much for her.
Soon a sense of calmness came over Natalie and she began to feel that familiar numbness returning. The pain had diminished. But, she noticed that her hearing had gone muffled, to the point she heard nothing. Her eyes began to grow heavy and her vision was beginning to blur once again. She could see Sam and Dean talking to her, but she couldn't hear what they were saying. Her eyes averted to David, her sight going in and out of focus, and she saw him pull out the bullet from her wound.
"Nad, it's over. It's all done."
Her body relaxed at the sound of Sam's voice. The numbness soon began to die and her vision slowly went back into focus. She looked at Dean and then over to Sam, seeing their eyes glazed over. I've never seen them like this. Natalie's brows furrowed faintly and raised her other hand to Dean, who took it into his own. She gave them both a reassuring squeeze and a small smile. She didn't want to see them like this. I'm going to get through this. Now that she had gotten through this, she felt that maybe she just be able to get through this.
The sun was beginning to set and the four of them knew that they needed to get Natalie out of here. Taking out the bullet and stopping the bleeding was one thing. This wound was something beyond what Sam and Dean have had in the past. A shot in the shoulder or leg was one thing, Natalie's wound was a gaping hole in her side. She needed to get to the hospital...and fast.
Dean walked into the kitchen, looking at Sam who was sitting next to a bandaged Natalie, his hand still holding hers. "Sam?" Sam looked up at Dean, who motioned for him to come over. Sam looked down at Natalie before getting up and walked to him. "Listen, we need to get Nad out of here. The longer she stays here the worse she will get."
Sam sighed a shaky breath and nodded. "Alright, what do you want to do?"
"Well, I talked with David and I think...he and Jake should get her in their car and get out of here. You and I will finish up the job here."
Sam's brows furrowed and he shook his head. "No...no."
Dean sighed. "Sam..."
"No, Dean." Sam interrupted, his tone had hardened. "I'm not leaving her."
Dean ran a hand down his face, wishing that his brother wouldn't argue about this with him. "Sam the hospital isn't for miles..."
"Exactly, she might not...she might not make the ride there." Sam interrupted.
"She is a hell of a lot better out on the road then staying here. Look, David knows how to take care of this. If he and Jake take her, he will be able to manage the wound until they reach the hospital." Dean saw the doubtful look on Sam's face. He didn't think it was so much the fact that Sam distrusted David, it was the thought of neither him or Sam being able to be with Natalie. Dean had to admit, he didn't want to stay behind while they took Natalie, but they had no choice.
Sam pondered on the thought for a while longer before shaking his head, causing Dean to sigh. "I'm not going to stay behind, Dean. She needs us with her."
"Sam, come on man. This case needs to be solved, and I need your help." Dean saw Sam's eyes glaze over and his lip quivered. "Sammy, I don't want to stay behind either, but we owe it to those people and to Nad, to find out who is causing all of this. I need you with me."
Sam let out a heavy breath and wiped at his eyes, then slowly nodded his head. "Alright. Let's get her out of here."
Dean patted Sam on the shoulder and motioned David and Jake over. "Okay. It's a go. David, you and Jake take Nad and get the hell out of here. Sam and I will stay here...finish all of this. Once we get done here we'll meet up at the hospital."
David nodded and sighed, gazing into the kitchen at Natalie. "You know she really is a fighter. Just like her father." The four of them descended into silence, allowing the situation to finally sink in. "Well, Jake and I will get ready. You two can have a moment with her before we leave."
Dean nodded in thanks and turned around, walking back into the kitchen and over to Natalie. Her eyes opened and she saw Dean sit down in the chair next to her. "Hey. Nad. Listen, David and Jake are going to...they're going to get you out of here and to a hospital." Dean reached over and took hold of her hand. "Sam and I are going to stay here and finish up the job. And I know you probably want to argue with me but that's not going to happen this time." Dean could see an unreadable expression in Natalie's eyes, but a small nod from her told him that she understood. "Just, uh, hang in there, okay? Once we get done here we'll see you at the hospital." Natalie nodded once again in response. Dean eyes roamed her face, taking in her pale, tired expression, and he could feel his composure beginning to ware down. He got up from the chair and brushed her hair back a few more times before stepping away.
Sam walked over, taking immediate hold of her hand. "I know this probably isn't what you want, but this is what needs to happen. Just keep fighting Nad. When Dean and I get to the hospital, we want to hear that you made it and that you will be just fine." Sam's hold on her hand tightened slightly. "We don't want to hear otherwise." Sam gently brushed back her hair. "Promise me that you will fight Nad. Don't give up. Keep fighting."
Natalie tried smiling with only a small success at it, but it was enough to tell Sam that she was going to try her absolute best. Sam returned it then leaned forward, pressing his lips to her forehead. His lips lingered only for a brief moment, before he pulled away slightly and leaned his forehead against hers. His smile faintly grew at the few assuring hand squeezes she gave him.
Sam stepped away from Natalie, their hands still linked together, and he motioned for David to take her. David walked up to the other side of Natalie, sliding one hand under her legs and other behind her back, then gently lifted her into his arms. "When we reach the hospital, we'll call. Hopefully you two will be out of here by then." Dean nodded in response. David turned to walk away and Natalie's hand fell out of Sam's grip.
Dean and Sam stood in silence as they watch David and Jake leave the house and disappeared from their sight. The boys took a moment to collect themselves and began to look around the room. The puddle of blood on the spot where they had found Natalie, was only now beginning to dry. Dean's sweater, they had used to try and stop the bleeding, was lying in a small bundle on the kitchen table, completely caked with blood. Both of them felt like this was just a bad dream and that they would wake up soon. But, seeing all of the blood and running through the events that happened made them both realize that this was real. It wasn't a bad dream, no matter how hard they wished it was.
Darkness was beginning to creep through the woods as David and Jake briskly made their way down the hillside. David would glance down at Natalie, more than occasionally, making sure that she was still with them. Reaching the bottom of the hillside, Jake dashed over to the car and opened the back door. David took his time walking down the last half of the hill, not wanting to agitate Natalie's discomfort any more. He walked over to the car and began to put Natalie into the backseat.
Jake could hear movement coming from the side of the hill they were parked next to. Turning his head, he saw a group of people making their way over to them. "Dad..." Jake warned, only to have someone come up from behind him and taking a hold of him.
David quickly set Natalie down on the seat and turned around to have someone throw a hit across his face. He pulled himself together quickly, before diving after the man who had attacked him. Natalie saw the scene that was happening before her and she could feel her adrenaline beginning to pump. Her hand pressed against her side as she slowly got out of the car.
"Nad! Get back in the car!" Jake called out, though he was a little preoccupied at fighting off one of the men.
Natalie turned around to look at Jake when she felt a pair of arms wrap around her. Despite, the pain she was feeling from her wound, Natalie knew that now she needed to fight her way out. She began to bring her elbow back, hitting the man in the side. Though, her hits were non-effective due to her weakened state. Natalie continued her action, to try and loosen his hold on her but it was no use. The man threw Natalie to the ground, causing her to groan as she landed on her bad side.
Natalie looked up where Jake was, only to see he was being overpowered by his attacker and she could hear that David wasn't having the best of luck either. Her eyes closed and she began to think that this was the end of it all. She was going to die right here and now. But, in all honesty she didn't mind anymore. Natalie had put up a brave front and tried her best at making through this, but now she had no strength left in her. She thought of Aunt Clara and Marina, thinking that at least they would have each other when she was gone. Bobby would get through it, he may have a hard time accepting it, but he will get through it. Dean and Sam will be alright...they had to be alright. They will be better off without me.
Natalie felt a foot nudge under her stomach, rolling her over to her back. She saw the dark silhouette of a man standing over her and it only reminded her of what happened back at the house. The barrel pointed at her, the deafening blast of the shot and the featureless figure of a man standing over her. All of it quickly came rushing back to her, as his foot lifted up and came down on her face causing everything to go black.
