Disclaimer: I do not own Supernatural
On April 21, 1967, the 100 millionth GM vehicle rolled off the line at the plant in Janesville—a blue two door Caprice. There was a big ceremony, speeches. The Lieutenant Governor even showed up. Three days later, another car rolled off that same line. No one gave two craps about her. But they should have, because this 1967 Chevrolet Impala would turn out to be the most important object in pretty much the whole universe.
She was first owned by Sal Moriarty, an alcoholic with two ex-wives and three blocked arteries. On weekends, he'd drive around giving Bibles to the poor "gettin' folks right for Judgement Day." That's what he said. Sam and Dean don't know any of this, but if they did, I bet they'd smile.
After Sal died, she ended up at Rainbow Motors, a used car lot in Lawrence, where a young marine bought her on impulse. That is, after a little advice from a friend. I guess that's where this story begins.
And here's where it ends.
It was cloudy, casting down a grey and dull glow on everything, and it pretty much summoned how Natalie was feeling. Ever since she and Dean returned from Chicago, she had been keeping to herself much of the time. Not speaking to Dean, since she was still upset with him and she hasn't said anything to Sam, because she knew that doing so would make wouldn't make the situation any better. Now that she had been given time to actually think about it, Natalie knew that what Dean did was something he had to do. Getting over her initial shock, she was finally able to grasp his reasoning, but that didn't mean that she liked it or accepted it.
Sam saying yes to Lucifer can only end in two ways, one, Sam is able to gain control back from him and jump in the pit, or two, Lucifer overpowers him. Either way, Natalie was going to lose Sam. Both directions will always lead to losing him. And she didn't want that. They both had finally found their way to each other and now this? How was any of this fair to them? Although, after everything they have gone through, how could they honestly expect life to be fair to them?
Sitting on the hood of one of the junk cars in Bobby's yard, Natalie pulled her knees to her chest, wrapped her arms around her legs and rested her forehead against her knees. It's not fair. She thought bitterly to herself. The car dipped down, telling her that someone was next to her, but she didn't need to look up to know that it was Sam. Instead, she kept her forehead against her knees, not wanting to look up at him.
Sam slid his hands in his jacket pockets and simmered in the silence between for a moment longer. After she and Dean returned from dealing with Death, she had been distant. Only giving him a few words every once in a while and it didn't take a genius to know that something was bothering her and Sam knew exactly what she was thinking about. Earlier, Dean had spoken to Sam, telling him that he was going with Sam's plan to say yes to Lucifer and attempt to get him into the pit. Though, Dean made sure to clarify that it wasn't what he wanted, but, what other leverage did they have to use against Lucifer? Nothing. Sam knew that even though Dean was now going on with the plan, Natalie was going to be a whole new story.
"Nad?" Sam spoke, deciding against putting it off any longer. "There's something that we need to talk about."
"Let me guess..." Natalie spoke, raising her head up enough to rest her chin on her knees. "Dean told you that he was all for you going to Lucifer."
"Yeah." Sam looked at Natalie, seeing her face was adorned with what looked like fading denial. "Nad, listen. We are at the bottom right now. Months and months of looking and we weren't able to find any other alternative. I'm all we have right now. And..." Sam stopped when Natalie turned her head away from him, in a desperate attempt to hide how easily her emotions were slipping through.
Sam hesitated, debating whether he should stop talking about this, but figured that he needed to continue. "Nad, I have to do this. I let Lucifer out and I need to be the one to put him back in."
Silence immediately proceeded once Sam finished, making him think that Natalie was going to ignore the subject. Natalie sniffled and leaned back, letting her legs stretch out in front of her and shrugged. "Okay. Why are you talking about this with me? Because, regardless of how I feel about this, you're going to go through with it."
"Nad. This is not really a debatable subject, due to the fact at how everything is turning out right now. Yeah, I am going to do this because I need to. Don't you want all of this to be over?"
"Of course I want it all to be over!" Natalie suddenly called out, glaring at Sam. "But, if it means that I have to lose you...then I don't want it to end."
"Nad, I know that you don't really mean that. I know that you want this to be over, just as much as Dean and I do."
Natalie crossed her arms over her chest and hung her head back, gazing up at the sky, allowing Sam's words to slowly sink in, knowing that he was right. She did want all of this to be over so that they could all just move on from it. But, Natalie also meant what she had said to him, she didn't want to lose him and would rather have all of this continue just to keep him by her side. But, what exactly does that say about her now? Natalie knew the minute she spoke those words, her selfishness has now reached the point where she needed to stop.
"You're right." Natalie finally said. "I-I want this to be over. And I know...that we are supposed to do whatever it takes to save people. But, it's not fair Sam. Why should you have to...I mean you and I, we just..." Natalie stopped, sighing in a heavy defeat, her body slumping in posture.
Sam nodded silently. "I know."
"So then this is really it. You're really going to go through with this." Natalie added.
"I have to, Nad." Sam answered. "And I know it's not fair. I mean if there was any other choice, I would definitely take it, you know I would."
"But...what am I supposed to do Sam?" Natalie asked, looking over at him, her eyes glazing over. "If you do jump into the pit. How am I supposed to...what am I going to do?"
Sam gazed over at Natalie, swallowing the lump that formed in his throat at the sight of her pain filled eyes. "I know what you can do Nad." Sam said, her expression changing to expectant. Sam swallowed again before continuing. "When all of this is over...go home. Go back to your family. Convince them to take a trip back out to Massachusetts. Travel. Do whatever you want. Live a normal, happy life. Give up being a hunter. And..." Sam paused, feeling himself already breaking down on the inside for what he was going to say. "...find—find someone that makes you happy. Someone who can give you the life that you deserve...who can keep you safe." Sam could hear his voice wavering towards the end. He hated saying it, since he wanted to be the one to make her happy, even though a hunter's life doesn't guarantee that. But, with Natalie, Sam felt that there was some slim chance that they could have that.
Natalie's expression immediately fell at his words and her brows furrow in a pained confusion. She knew that there was only one person who would make her happy and he was about to sacrifice himself to get things back to normal. Natalie slowly shook her head. "No. Don't say that."
"That's what I want for you Nad. When I jump in that pit...I'm not coming back. So you have to promise me that you will go home and live your life. Don't go looking for a way to get me out. Leave me there, Nad."
Natalie began to shake her head vigorously. "No. No, Sam I can't. You—you can't ask me to do that. Please, you can't ask me to do that."
"Nad. Promise me. Promise that you will let all of this go...let me go. And move on without looking back. Promise me that you will do that." Sam looked at her, desperately hoping that she will make this promise. It wasn't easy for him either. The very thought of leaving her was painful enough, but to think about what this will do to her, tore at him more than he could have imagined. But, if she gave him this one last thing, he knew that he would be at some peace.
Natalie bit down on her lip, her eyes closing in an attempt to hold back the tears that were stinging at her eyes. She wanted to promise him this one last thing, but if she did, Natalie was convinced that she would go against it. She wouldn't move on. She wouldn't let go of this...of him. Natalie knew that she would be right back where she was after her dad died—holding on too tight to the past. But, Natalie wanted to give him this solace, not matter how hard it might be to agree with it.
Natalie's eyes slowly opened and she took in a deep breath before looking back at him. "I-I promise Sam...I promise." Her lips pursed together as tears finally spilled from her eyes and streamed down her cheeks. "Can't believe I agreed to it." She managed to choke out, as her hands quickly covered her face, wanting to hide her breakdown from him.
Sam gently wrapped his arm around her back and pulled her to him until her body was against his. Sam then wrapped his other arm around her body, resting his cheek on the top of her head. Natalie didn't try and keep back her tears, and once Sam had his arms around her, she allowed this episode to play itself out. Her head nestled against his chest, her arms snaking around his waist, holding him close to her. She wanted nothing more than for time to just stop right now so that Sam didn't actually have to go out there and do this.
"You're gonna be alright, Nad." Sam spoke gently to her, his hand rubbing her back soothingly.
Natalie's arms tightened around him, shaking her head faintly. "I want to believe you...but I doubt it Sam."
"No you will be." Sam was quick to assure her. "I know you'll be able to get through it." Sam hoped that he was giving her some sort of confidence that she could use to face this head on. But, that was something that he couldn't exactly see at the moment and he would never be able to see how she will deal with it.
Natalie snuggled closer to him and closed her eyes, savoring this moment that she was having with him, knowing that it is probably the only time they would have a chance to do this. She knew that once it was time to hit the road, they all would be two busy getting prepared for the final showdown. Even though being in Sam's arms allowed her to forget everything around her, in the back of her mind, Natalie was preparing herself for what was going to come out of this. And she admitted to herself, she was scared.
Four demons strung up by their feet, like animals in a slaughterhouse, were being drained of their blood, the liquid streamed into gallon jugs that had been set under the bodies. That was the sight Natalie had been silently surveying the past couple of minutes. She had been there the whole time, watching as Sam, Dean and Castiel strung them up, killing them and then emptying their vessels of their blood.
Natalie had told Sam that she wasn't going to be left out of anything during these trips. She was going to be there for every single moment, wanting to be near his side for as long as she could, even if it meant seeing something like this. On the outside, Natalie was well poised, her face was hard and her eyes were expressionless, no longer easily readable. But, on the inside, she was reeling at the thought of Sam having to drink that vile mess again, to make him strong enough to take on Lucifer.
After all that time they had spent in trying to get Sam off of the stuff. The pain that it caused all of them. All of that was for nothing, because here they were, obtaining the demon go juice for Sam and Natalie couldn't help but feel sick. She hated that this was essential for their plan to be on the path of being successful.
The last demon finally stopped bleeding, signaling that he had been drained as well. Castiel picked up the gallon and tightened the lid on it. Natalie walked forward and took hold of the gallon, which Castiel gave up without hesitation. Natalie then led the way out of the warehouse, with Castiel and Sam, who were both carrying gallons of blood, and Dean trailed behind.
Reaching the trunk of the Impala, Natalie set down the gallon and made room for Castiel and Sam to do the same. Natalie remained near the trunk as Sam stood next to her, setting down the gallons in his hands. She quickly surveyed the contents in the jugs and shook her head.
"Can't believe you have to do this." She finished, her tone hinting to a slight disgust.
"It's not exactly what you might consider a nice beverage. But, it's necessary. If I am going to over power Lucifer...I'm gonna need all the juice I can get." Sam said, as he closed the trunk to the Impala.
They both turned around seeing Dean walking over to them. "We know where the devil is." He said once he reached them.
Natalie raised her brows in surprise. "Where is he then?"
"Detroit. There was a 20 degree drop in temperature within a five block radius in downtown Motown. I'm pretty sure that's where Lucifer is holding up."
Natalie nodded, not wanting to question it since she could see that Dean was dead set on his decision. "So that's where we are heading next then."
Dean nodded and walked over to the drivers side. "We better get going."
The Impala drove down the highway, the engine buzzing with life, though that noise did nothing to break the silence that filled the car. Dean looked up in the rear-view mirror, seeing Castiel and Natalie were sleeping. "Aw. Aren't they both just little angels."
Sam looked back at them and then turned back around in his seat. "Angels don't sleep." He looked back at Natalie, his eyes roaming over her face, seeing how peaceful she was, he wished that she could just remain like that.
"Sam, I got a bad feeling about this." Dean admitted.
"Well, you'd be nuts to have a good feeling about it." Sam said, pulling his gaze over to Dean.
"You know what I mean. Detroit. He always said he'd jump your bones in Detroit. And here we are. Maybe this is him rolling out the red carpet, you know? Maybe he knows something that we don't."
"Dean, I'm sure he knows a buttload we don't. We just got to hope he doesn't know about the rings." Sam paused. "Hey, um...on the subject there's something I got to talk to you about."
"What?"
"This thing goes our way and I, Triple Lindy into that box...you know that I'm not coming back." Sam said, easing this subject into the conversation.
"Yeah, I'm aware."
"So you got to promise me something."
"Okay. Yeah. Anything."
"You got to promise me not to try and bring me back." Sam said, his mind flashing back to Natalie's reaction and he could already gather that Dean's might be the same.
"What?" Dean looked at him incredulously. "No, I didn't sign up for that."
"Dean—"
"Your hell is gonna make my tour look like Graceland. You want me to just sit by and do nothing?"
"Once the cage is shut, you can't go poking at it, Dean. It's too risky."
"No, no, no. As if I'm just gonna let you rot in there."
"Yeah, you are. You don't have a choice."
Dean looked at Natalie through the rearview mirror. "What about Nad? How do you think she is going to handle you asking that now that you two...you know?"
"I already spoke to her about this. And she promised me that she wouldn't try to bring me back."
Dean looked at Sam quickly and shook his head in disbelief. "You...you can't ask us to do that Sam."
"I'm sorry, Dean. You have to."
"So then what am I supposed to do?"
Sam closed his eyes briefly at Dean's words, hearing Natalie's question echo through his mind. What am I supposed to do Sam? He sighed heavily and looked back at his brother. "You go find Lisa. You pray to god she's dumb enough to take you in and you have barbecues and go to football games. You go live some normal, apple pie life, Dean. Promise me."
Dean kept his gaze focused on the road, his head buzzing with several emotions. Disbelief was the biggest one he was experiencing. The thought of leaving his little brother in the cage and to just live his life by walking away from it, that wasn't something he was comfortable doing. But, he knew that the one thing he could give Sam was this promise.
"I promise."
Sam, Natalie, Dean and Castiel stood next to the Impala as Bobby made his way back over to them. "Demons. At least two dozen of them. You were right, Dean. Something's up."
"More than something. He's here. I know it." Dean patted Sam's arm. "Let's get you ready." He said, before walking over to the trunk of the Impala.
Sam gave a small nod and walked over to Bobby, seeing his own eyes starting to brim with tears. "I'll see ya around, kid." Bobby said, offering Sam a small smile.
"See ya around."
Bobby reached forward and hugged Sam, giving him a few reassuring pats on the back before pulling away. "He get's in, you fight him tooth and nail, you understand? Keep swingin'. Don't give an inch."
Sam nodded at Bobby's advice. "Yes, sir." Sam turns to Castiel and holds out his hand, which Castiel shakes. "You take care of them, okay?"
"That's not possible." Castiel responded.
Sam smiled and huffed out a laugh. "Then humor me."
"Oh. I was supposed to lie." Castiel nodded his head forcing a smile. "Uh...sure. They'll be fine."
"Okay, just stop...talking." Sam said, seeing that Castiel was relieved to not have to try and lie to him like that.
Sam turned around and walked over to Natalie, stopping in front of her, he turned to face her. They both took a small moment to study each other's features, wanting to paint one last image of each other that they could hold onto. For Natalie, it would be the only lasting image she would have of him once this was all over. And Sam felt that if he was one last image of Natalie, it might help keep himself together and get through this.
Natalie felt her lip quiver and her eyes stung at the new around of tears that were forming. She quickly wrapped her arms around his neck and they both leaned forward, their lips crashing together. Her hold around him tightened and his hand rested at the back of her neck, both of them holding the other one close.
Dean simply smirked, not surprised by it at all, since he had already seen them in a moment like this and he was just loving the fact that he had been right the whole time. But, his smile slowly disappeared, knowing that what was about to happen was going to rip these two apart.
Sam and Natalie both pulled away till their lips were just inches from each other, feeling each other's soft breaths brush at their faces. Sam rested his forehead against hers, his hand moving to cradle her cheek, neither of them spoke. They knew what the other was thinking and it didn't need to be said aloud.
Sam leaned his head up and pressed his lips to her forehead, allowing them to linger for just a while longer. Natalie then leaned forward and rested her chin on his shoulder as she held him in a tight hug, his arms wrapped around her waist holding her close. Natalie was dreading the moment she would have to let go and watch him walk right into Lucifer's hand. She just wanted to keep him right here, in her arms, and never let go. But, she knew that she needed to...right now.
Natalie let out a shaky breath and then slowly pulled herself away from Sam's hold, her hands rested on his shoulder as she looked up at him one last time. She gave him a small nod and a hesitant, yet, encouraging smile. Sam took her smile as a sign of strength for not only him, but for her as well. He knew she was trying to convey that she would be fine and he hoped that it was the truth.
Natalie leaned against the Impala as Sam walked towards the trunk where Dean was. She didn't dare walk back there with him, knowing that he wouldn't want her to see him drink all of that demon blood and apparently it went the same way with Dean, since the next thing she knew, he was leaning against the car beside her. She looked over at Dean, seeing that he was slowly coming to terms with what was about to go down. He was going to lose his little brother. Natalie began to feel guilty for putting up such a fight with him after seeing Death in Chicago. Practically blaming him for selling his brother out, when she knew that it was the last thing he wanted to do. But, she was just caught up in her own anger, she looked right past Dean's feelings towards the situation.
Dean could feel her looking at him and so he gazed down at her. But, there was no longer anger directed towards him. Instead, Dean could see a sense of understanding and a small plea for forgiveness, which he answered with a smile. He wanted to tell her that she had nothing to be sorry for, she was not only losing a friend, but someone that she loved and he knew that it wasn't easy for her either.
The trunk door was slammed shut, causing Dean and Natalie to look over at Sam, who wiped at his mouth and walked past them. "Okay. Let's go." Dean looked over at Natalie, who motioned for him to go, and then trailed behind Sam towards the building where they knew Lucifer was hiding at.
Sam approached the building, his arms raised up. "Alright! We're here, you sons of bitches! Come and get it!"
Bobby and Castiel walked over near Natalie, the three of them watching as two demons walked out of the building and towards Sam and Dean. For a brief moment, they conversed, but it wasn't much, since they were then quickly ushered into the building. As Sam disappeared through the doorway, Natalie could feel a heavy dread fill her, knowing that was the last time she would ever see 'Sam'.
Minutes ticked by agonizingly slow for Natalie's taste. Her eyes have been fixed on the building where Sam and Dean went into, not seeing any sign that would clue to her that their plan was working and she was beginning to worry. Bobby leaned on the car next to her, his arms crossed over his chest, as he stared at her. Natalie could feel a pair of eyes on her and looked over, spotting the look on Bobby's face. "What?"
"So. You and Sam?" Bobby asked, wanting to know the story to this.
Natalie smiled faintly and shook her head. "Yeah, I guess you could say that."
"How long?"
Natalie shrugged. "It actually wasn't long at all Bobby. Not long at all. And now...I don't think it will ever be."
Bobby wrapped his arm around her shoulder, pulling her close to him. "It's not fair...to either one of you. But you're gonna pull through, Nad. I know you will. You got me, Dean, your sister and your aunt. You ain't alone kiddo. I need you to know that."
Natalie looked over at Bobby and nodded her head. "I know, Bobby."
The building where Dean and Sam had gone into, suddenly erupted in a bright light that caught their attentions. Natalie looked up at the window where the light was shinning through, her heart pounded against her chest as she began to think what could possibly be going on. As quickly as the light came, it then disappeared, leaving Natalie confused. She looked over at Bobby. "What the hell was that?"
Bobby shrugged as he continued to gaze up at the window. "Perhaps...Lucifer finally got into his skin."
Natalie visibly shook at the thought and gazed up at the window once again, frustrated that she couldn't actually see anything that was happening in the room. Her eyes became fixed on the window, waiting for any sign of either Dean or Sam, when the door to the building opened and Dean walked out. Natalie could feel relief at seeing Dean, but, her mind immediately went to Sam. She pushed away from the Impala and walked towards Dean, making him stop in front of her. "Where's Sam? What happened?"
Dean was letting out shaky breaths and his eyes told her that he had been close to crying or perhaps he did and she thought that Sam was actually able to throw himself into the pit. "Sam...he uh...he couldn't do it."
Natalie looked at him, confusion etched in her face. "What do you mean?" Natalie asked, as Bobby walked up behind Natalie.
"L-Lucifer possessed Sam...but he wasn't able to overpower him." Dean saw the horror flash in Natalie's eyes. "Lucifer is in full control now and Sam...he can't get back out. Lucifer is gone."
Bobby let out a sigh and rubbed at his forehead. "Okay. Well. We just need to figure something out...that's all." Bobby said as he turned around and walked back over to the Impala.
Dean brushed past Natalie, but stopped and looked back at her, seeing that she was frozen in place. "Nad." Dean said, reaching forward and taking hold of her arm.
Natalie slowly turned around and looked at him. "Dean..."
Dean could feel a jolt of adrenaline rush through him at seeing her so battered and beaten by all of this. The look on her face, is one that he never wants to see again. Dean walked towards her and cupped her face in his hands. "Nad. Listen to me. We're gonna find him, okay? We're gonna find him and we are gonna help bring Sam back. You trust me Nad?"
Natalie gave Dean staggered nods, not controlling the tears that were starting to fill her eyes. Dean pulled her to him, wrapping his arms around her, wanting to do anything that he could to help give her some sort of comfort. But, to Natalie, it was no use. Sam was practically gone and now Lucifer was out there somewhere in his body, getting ready to do his throwdown with Michael. Natalie shut her eyes tightly, trying to rid of the thought as she buried her face against Dean's shoulder, thinking that all of this couldn't possibly get worse. But, she was wrong.
Alright, so we only have ONE more chapter to go in this story and I am almost halfway done with it so hopefully it will be up within the next couple of days. Now onto the question that I wanted to asked you all, though I should probably wait till the last chapter but I'm just gonna ask it now. So for the next installment, how would YOU like to see Natalie reunite with Sam? I am really curious as to what you're ideas are and I might just choose some of your ideas for their reunion. I really, really, want to know your ideas so please post them in a review! I might just end up asking this question again in the last chapter, in case some of you wanted to think about your idea. Anyways until next time! Xx
