Bobby hung up the phone and ran his hands over his tired eyes before crossing the last name off his list. His list that was not nearly long enough. He'd called in every favor he had. Every friend, friend of friends, and even a few enemies. Not even Rufus had been able to give him much information. All of the leads had led to a dead end. In the last case, literally. The woman who Rufus had suggested had been dead for almost five years.

The front door creaked open, allowing a rectangle of sunlight to enter with the two brothers.

"You sure I've never shown you how to change the fanbelt before?" Dean asked.

"Never."

"Then we really need to step up the teaching." Dean grinned over at Bobby. "Hey, Bobby, you mind if I let Sam do some handy work on the clunkers you got?"

"Naw. Just don't get 'em workin' too well. I don't want to bother with sellin' 'em." Bobby tried to hide his disappointment, but the boys weren't fooled in the least.

"What's the matter?" Sam frowned.

"I called people."

"No luck? How many do you have left?" Sam came closer to take a look at the list.

"That was it. The only leads I had."

"Did you call Ash?"

"Ash, Rufus, everbody. That was all I could get."

Dean had been strangely quiet during the whole exchange, absentmindedly rubbing his elbow through the sling. He managed a tight smile as Sam turned to look at him. "We tried, Sammy."

Sam looked between Dean and Bobby incredulously. His jaw clenched and he finally stormed out, slamming the door behind him.

"Thanks, Bobby." Dean nodded at the older man and headed for the stairs.

Bobby hated a lot of things. Wendigos, rugarus, and coleslaw were near the top, but seeing the boys hurt surpassed the rest on every level. And seeing Dean act tough through the pain and fear broke his heart. Ever since John, hell, even before John died, Bobby had felt responsible for the brothers. They were like his own kids. And he had no way to help them. He only hoped Sam wouldn't do something stupid get himself in trouble trying to help his brother.
