Lily walked around Hogwarts that afternoon, wasting time before dinner. She had to think of what she was going to say to Fred. How do you tell the person you love that you've given up on them? That there's no possible way you can be together?

How did everything get so messed up? Why can't it be like just two months ago, when they were so in love and, well, together?

She hated Mason. He ruined everything. It's his entire fault. He doesn't even are about her. If he did, he'd want her to be happy. He would let her be with Fred.

Lily made her way slowly to the great hall for dinner as the sun began to set. She entered the crowded hall and bumped into Fred in the bustle of hungry students.

"Oh, sorry." Fred said.

"It's fine. Um, can you meet me by the lake after dinner?" she asked, mustering all the courage and willpower she had.

"Sure. Our spo-" he stopped himself from finishing the thought. Once he saw Lily there with Mason, he knew it was no longer their spot. Lily nodded in return and met up with Draco and Tina at the Slytherin table.

"That looked uncomfortable." Tina said as Lily sat beside her.

"Oh, it was, trust me." Lily replied.

"So, what's happening?"

"I'm meeting him at our spot by the lake after dinner."

"Your spot?"

"You know what I mean."

"Well, what are you going to tell him when you see him?"

"I don't know; the truth I guess."

"Do you have any idea how brave you are?"

"Brave? If I'm so brave, then why do I feel like such a coward?"

"I'm serious, if I had to walk away from Draco; I don't think I could do it."

"Would you get drunk and throw yourself at him pathetically?"

"I would do that sober." Tina said, taking her boyfriend's hand and continuing to eat.

She looked across at the table and couldn't help but laugh when she saw the twins flinging peas at each other using their forks as catapults. She stabbed away slowly at her steak, just wanting one more minute to watch him. Just a little more time to bask in the happiness of seeing him smile and laugh before she told him she's given up.

She met up with Fred by the lake at exactly seven thirty pm. He was already waiting for her when she got there, like always.

"Hey." she said as she reached him.

"Hi Lil." he greeted, although without the cheery tone his voice usually held, "about last night…"

"No, its fine, actually, thank you. If we had…well you know where it was headed, I would've regretted it."

"Yeah me too."

"I have one question though, how did I get back to my dorm?"

"I borrowed Harry's invisibility cloak and took you back just before sunrise."

"Thank you." she said, feeling a blush rise onto her face, "Potter has an invisibility cloak?" she asked, shocked and distracted. Fred couldn't help but chuckle; trust Lily to pick up on that. "Uh, anyway, that's not what I wanted to talk about though. Tina told me about what Mason did - is doing."

"Lily, I…" Fred interrupted.

"Don't talk, just listen, I need to do this." she said "I understand why you broke up with me, I do. What I don't understand is why you didn't just tell me. Didn't you trust me enough? Your family took me in when mine left me. I had no one and your family accepted me. I would do anything to repay them. I don't exactly want to date Mason, but I will if I have to. I love you Fred, and I don't want to lose you, but I also don't want to be the cause of your family falling apart." she finished; her eyes were burning from the tears that were threatening to fall.

"I love you." he said, his eyes watering as well.

"I know, but this is the end Fred." she said, unable to stop the flow of tears any longer.

"What are you saying?" he sobbed.

"I'm saying that, we have to let go. If anything happened to you or your family, I'd hate myself."

"Lil, I can't lose you! I mean, I already have, but, no. You have to hold on. For us."

"There can't be an us Fred, don't you get it? Mason isn't going to stop!"

"I love you!"

"I know." she choked and reached around her neck. She found the clasp of her necklace and pulled it off. She held it in her hand, taking one last look at the silver snake that was curved into an 'L'. She held it out to Fred, but he didn't take it. She forced it into his hand and took off the sweater she was wearing too, her Weasley sweater. She passed it to Fred, who held it to his chest, crying.

"Don't do this." he begged.

"I have to. Fred, you have to forget about me."

"I can't just forget about you! You're everything to me."

"You don't have a choice. Promise me you'll be happy without me."

"It's not possible. I can't be happy while I'm in love with you and you're with Mason!"

"Promise."

"I…I promise."

"Thank you."

She kissed him quickly on the cheek and then turned and left, wiping the tears from her face and telling herself that what she just did was right. As soon as she was out of sight, her knees buckled and she cried harder than she had since they broke up. She leaned against a wall and sobbed into her hands. She was crying so much she could barely breathe. She sat there all night, not wanting to go back to the dorm, because if she did, she would have to accept the harsh reality of it all.

A/N: I'm sorry I haven't updated this in ever. I lost all inspiration for it but now I have it back :) I'm thinking of re-writing this series from the start, just making it better and more fluffy and angsty XD Anyway, let me know what you think with review (even if it;s just to yell at me for not updating)!
