I DIDN'T REALIZE HOW LONG IT'S BEEN SINCE I'VE UPDATED THIS STORY, I'M SO SORRY.
Life got in the way I guess, I honestly didn't intend to abandon this story and it appears I have. I will try and update more often, but now that I have a busy life now so sometimes I'll update frequently and others will be more apart. Also I read over the previous chapters and I know there's a much smaller gap between all the events that happen but as usual in fanfiction I have to extend the period of time between things to make it all fit. Anyway, thanks for still sticking with me through this and I have plenty more chapters and idea planned. Thanks.
How was she going to deal with all of this on her own? It was all going to happen at once, there was no way she was going to be able to cope. Tony kept going over it in his head and he stared up at the roof of their bedroom that night, struggling to close his eyes without thinking of everything that was going on. He was going to have a son with the woman he loved, but no matter how perfect it all seemed, it was all overshadowed by the fact that he was sure he wasn't going to live to see it all unfold.
It wasn't without a fight either. Every day he had been searching for a cure to his palladium poisoning, but there was nothing out there. No one else had experienced what he was going through, no one else had an arc reactor in their chest to stop shrapnel getting into their heart. There was no cure out there and no other element that would power it and help him live.
But how could he tell her that? How could he explain that to her now? He was dying of something that there was no cure for, that no one else had experienced before and that he didn't know how long he had left. He wouldn't see his son grow up, he wouldn't be there for either of them. He couldn't do it. He couldn't break her heart like that.
''Tony?'' Logan's hand wandered onto his chest as she spoke tiredly. ''You okay?''
''Yeah,'' he shuffled closer to her, slipping his hand around her waist. ''Can't sleep,''
''What's wrong?'' she opened her eyes.
''It's nothing, I'm just thinking of...all the stuff we have to do. Can we just cancel all of it? Let's just not do any of it, become recluses and ignore everyone else,''
Logan sighed and nodded her head.
''Okay,''
''Really?''
''No,'' she yawned. ''We have to...gotta do all...stuff,''
Tony grinned at how cute she sounded as her voice died down to soft breaths as she fell back to sleep. He ran his hand up her side and settled on her stomach, his thumb stroking against her skin.
Everything was so perfect and so terribly wrong all at once.
''I don't think it's meant to go like that,'' Logan bit her lip as she stared at the half-constructed crib. ''The picture looks completely different,''
Tony sat on the floor of their spare room, now nursery, with a screwdriver in his mouth and an expression that mirrored the one he had when putting together an Iron Man suit or a car engine. The instructions were crumpled up on the floor next to him since he'd refused to bother reading them. He could build weapons, engines, arc reactors and robots, but this crib was testing him right now.
''It's fine,'' he shook his head, trying to fix the side he was on but watching as it fell to the ground.
''Just read the-''
''No way,'' he tried again. ''I've got this,''
Logan sighed and leaned against the door frame, one hand resting of her hip and the other on her now very pregnant stomach. They had decided to take the entire day to set up as much of the nursery as possible, but putting the crib together proved to be more difficult than they'd ever thought.
Half and hour later, Ton had finally assembled the crib perfectly without even glancing at the instructions. He couldn't believe how complex putting together one of these things could be, but he was relieved to have it done. Logan walked over and observed the crib, a smile on her lips as she imagined their son sleeping in it soundly.
''It's adorable,'' she chuckled, admiring the little sketches of birds and clouds that ran along the rails. ''It's perfect,''
Tony wrapped his arm around her waist, looking over the crib with a sense of pride.
''It does look good,'' he nodded. ''But I have some modifications in mind,''
Logan stared up at him.
''Modifications? What do you mean?''
''Just a few things I've had in mind,'' he shrugged, noticing her concerned look. ''Nothing to worry about though,''
''You're taking about making modifications to our son's crib, and your modifications worry me,'' she argued. ''As long as it's nothing that could ever be potentially dangerous,''
Tony smiled down at her.
''What?'' she asked, a grin breaking out on her lips too when she watching he staring at her.
''Our son,'' he repeated. ''It's just...weird hearing it. It's a good weird though, a really good weird,''
Logan reached up and pressed a kiss to his lips before walking over to he boxes in the corner. Tony followed behind her, watching as she opened it to reveal children's books and stuffed animals that she'd collected over the past few months.
Tony loved watching her grow into the role of a mother. Neither of them ever thought they'd be a parent with their lives being so crazy, and it had all happened so fast and unexpectedly that they didn't know how they'd do it, and yet here they were. They were beyond excited to start the next part of their lives, and for the past week Tony had let himself focus on just that. Their future.
Even if he still wasn't sure how long he'd be around for it. There had been no progress in his search for a cure to palladium poisoning, he didn't know how long he could hold back from telling her, but he couldn't bring himself to do it. Just not yet.
''Now for the shelves I guess,'' Logan turned to him.
Tony groaned.
''Can't I just get someone to come in and put everything together?'' he complained.
''No,'' Logan shook her head. ''Where's the fun in that? Don't you want to tell your son that you made all of this for him?''
Tony thought, there was a lot of things he wanted to tell his son. There was a lot of things he wanted to be around for, to watch him grow up and to teach him about everything he'd need to know. How to drive a car, watching him go to college, watching him have his own life. There was so much he wanted to be around for.
Without saying anything more about the shelves, Tony walked over to Logan and wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close. Logan was taken aback for a moment, wondering what was wrong.
''Tony?'' she asked carefully, worried by his silence. ''What's wrong?''
''I just love you,'' he shook his head.
Tony didn't want to tell her like this, he wanted to try some more before he broke it to her. Right now he just wanted to hold her.
Logan walked into the office with a groan, wishing she had stayed at home. The past week had been horrible in terms of how nauseous and horrible she'd been feeling. It didn't help that the entire world had been keeping a much closer eye on her now she was only a month away from her due date. On her desk was a magazine from one of the many celebrity gossip distributors with huge headlines claiming that Tony Stark was going to be the father of twins.
She threw her bag down on the floor beside her chair and then looked over to Drew who had a huge grin on his face as if he was enjoying all of this.
''Do I really look that fat that they think there's two babies in here,'' she pointed to her stomach. ''Does it look like I'm carrying twins?''
Drew tried not to laugh at how angry she was getting over the story, pulling his hand up to cover his mouth. Being in the office without her for weeks now made him miss whenever he would pull a joke on her or intentionally annoy her. It was hilarious, but also kind of frightening considering she was eight months pregnant and very sensitive to everything.
''No,'' he shook his head. ''Seriously, you look normal. Not normal obviously, but normal for a pregnant person,''
Logan looked over to him with a glare.
''I'm sending an angry email to these assholes,'' she threw the magazine in the trash and sat down, turning on her computer.
''Whoa, let's take it down a notch,'' he moved his chair over next to hers, turning the computer off again.
''You're not the one basically being called fat,'' she pushed against him when she spun her chair around.
''True, I may not be subject to all the headlines but there was that one time they called you my boss and that did hurt, so I can sympathize,'' he smiled.
''I could be your boss,'' she folded her arms. ''You haven't even hired a new partner yet,''
''I refuse to hire a new partner. I just want an assistant until you get back, I don't want to commit to some new person,'' he told her with a pout, like a child. ''Maybe I'll score a hot assistant at Tony's birthday party?''
''Good luck with that,'' she rolled her eyes. ''That's another two weeks away, so what are you going to do until then?''
''Lock the door and sit in the dark so that Collins' doesn't know I'm in here doing no work,'' he shrugged. ''Seriously, I can't wait for you to get back from maternity leave. No one to talk to around here, no one to annoy, it's so lonely,''
Logan chuckled.
''You're such a baby,''
''You're the one who came to visit me,''
Logan lifted her bag up with a groan before searching through it, pulling out a small file and handing it over to him. She waited for him to open it up and saw his excited expression before explaining.
''They're exclusives from the Expo and some new Stark Industries developments. It's not much, but I figured it would keep you busy for a little while until you work out how to do it on your own. But I'm not giving you any of my cameras or anything, you'll have to figure that part out yourself,''
Drew smiled up at her.
''This is why I can't replace you, you truly have set the working partner bar very high,''
Logan was sitting on the couch later that night, her attention split between a container of ice cream and a book of baby names. She couldn't make her mind up about any of the names she read and she didn't want to have no name for their baby when he was born. It was much more difficult than she thought.
''Hey Tony?'' she called out.
''Yeah?'' he put his head around the corner of the kitchen. ''What's up?''
''What are you doing?''
''Uh, just fixing something,'' he told her as calmly as he could, pulling the arc reactor from his chest and staring at the smoke coming from the palladium chip.
It was getting worse every day. It was making him sweat as if he had a fever and he could barely keep his eyes open toward the end of the day. His neck was becoming darker every day as patterns traced up from his chest, but he'd managed to hide it successfully from Logan. When he grabbed the new chip and inserted it back into his chest, he let out a sigh of relief.
He couldn't keep going on like this.
''You've been downstairs all afternoon,'' Logan told him when he walked into the living room, taking a seat next to her.
''Sorry, the government aren't the easiest people to get rid of,''
Senator Stern was still appealing to every media outlet to get Tony to hand over the Iron Man suits after Ivan Vanko's attempt to kill Tony at the Grand Prix. Tony thought they could move on from the incident when Vanko's prison cell exploded and he was pronounced dead, but it was too late, the damage had been done. The government wasn't backing down. Not from their insults to Tony and how irresponsible he was or from the fact that they were going to take the suits away from him.
They tried to ignore it though. Tony hated the idea of Logan worrying about his problems with the government and the suits, he always turned off the news whenever they began to mention it, but she always worried over it. He just wanted to protect her from so many things, but they were all out of his control.
''I thought Pepper said they were going to make a deal,'' Logan sat up.
''We're working on it, don't worry,'' he shrugged, reaching over and put his hand into her leg. ''Pick a name yet?''
''No,'' she put her head back on the couch. ''Way too difficult,''
''Give me a look,'' he grabbed the book from her hands. ''You know I have a name in mind-''
''If it's Tony Jr. I suggest you keep it to yourself,'' she warned, watching as he looked back to the book.
''Well none of these other names are going to live up to that one,''
Logan laughed as he began reading names out for her to consider, leaning back comfortably and closing her eyes to listen to him. Everything seemed perfect to her.
