"So, why are we going to your house? Why would you even want to see your step-father?"
Anzu glanced over her shoulder, giving Bakura a withering look. "Because we want to tell him we're not coming back to him ever."
"And to make him pay for the way he treated us all these years," Akio continued, not looking at the others, but looking straight ahead. "Like it was our fault that we were born."
Elecktra shrugged, fiddling with the flute in her hands. "I guess I can understand. Living with my step-father was no picnic either," her hand found Marik's giving it a squeeze. "You remember him, don't you?"
Marik just made a face. "Trying not to remember him."
Bakura only rolled his eyes, but didn't say anything. Atem just smiled, shaking his head. "I'm thankful that my mother didn't turn out abusive, or my step-father for that matter."
"Well aren't you lucky," Marik muttered sarcastically. "My mother after I was born and my step-father went crazy, locking me in my house all the time."
"At least you two still speak to one another and are trying to work things out," Elecktra pointed out. "And he is taking medication now, so maybe he's not so bad anymore."
"I suppose."
The rest of the walk was in silence, no one saying anything for a long while. The only sounds that could be heard was the birds chirping in the summer heat, the cars running down the road, and the other people chatting on the side walk in different tones of voices. Anzu sighed, anxiety pooling in her stomach. Glancing at her brother, she saw the same look on his face. "Hey," she whispered, taking his hand in hers. "We're stronger than him now."
"I know," he whispered back. "But what if he doesn't feel bad?"
"Then we just leave. He means nothing to us now."
"I guess."
They continued to walk in silence, up until Anzu stopped them right in front of a burned looking building, the relaxed smile on her face changing into a frown. "Well this can't be right," she began, looking rather confused. "Why is there a building here? There were just two houses on our street."
Elecktra walked up next to her, her green eyes looking confused. "There is definitely a building here. Are you sure you remember correctly?"
"I think I'd know how to get back to my own house!"
Bakura stared up at the building, eyes narrowed to read the sign that lay above the building. "This was a tooth paste factory," he said flatly. "There was no house ever here."
Akio shook his head, eyes going wide. "But that can't be! I know this is where our house is! It's the same address and everything."
Atem just turned to the twins, looking rather worried. "Maybe the mist cast an illusion to make you think this is your house?"
"But why?" Anzu asked, panic rising in her. "What's going on?"
"Don't you know, little Demi-Titan?"
All of them jumped, turning around sharply to see a woman standing before them. She was dressed in black robes that looked medieval, the end of it trailing behind her. Her eyes were black, her black hair seeming to go on forever. Her skin was deathly pale, and the look on her face was grave. Elecktra appeared to be the only one who recognized her, bowing very slightly.
"Mother!" she cried, still looking at the ground. "What are you doing here?"
"You're Hecate," Akio blurted, ignoring the jab from his sister. "You're the goddess of magic!"
Hecate only looked at him gravely, laying a hand on her daughter's shoulder as she straightened out. "Yes, I am Hecate. I have been watching your journey for some time now, and it is time that I help you out."
"What do you mean, Mother?" Elecktra asked, looking nervous. "You're not here to kill them, are you?"
Hecate smiled softly, though neither of them could tell if it was cruel or kind. She shook her head, her hair gently moving behind her. "I'm not here to kill them, daughter," she started gently. "I am here to explain a few things."
"Like what?" Bakura asked skeptically, arms crossed over his chest.
Hecate only ignored him, looking at the twins sadly. "As you have already figured out, your house isn't here," she held up a hand, not allowing any of them to speak. "And no, it is not on another street or town. In fact, your house doesn't exist at all."
Anzu's jaw dropped. "What?"
"Your house does not exist. Your step-father does not exist," the goddess looked at them coolly. "Haven't any of you noticed that neither of you have appeared on the news as missing children?"
"I…I…yes," Akio began; now feeling sick to his stomach. "So, no one knows we exist?"
"To put it bluntly, yes," Hecate answered in a not so sympathetic tone. "To the whole world, you two do not exist. Well, the mortal world anyway."
"Then who raised us?" Anzu asked. "How did we survive for all these years if no one even noticed us?"
Hecate smiled softly. "I cast an illusion over to city of Kyoto to prevent anyone from seeing you. I had a few of my empousai feed and take care of your, but made sure that none of you would remember it. I will admit that my empousai were not the nicest creatures to use to take care of you, but it did cast the illusion of a cruel Step-father," she folded he arms, continuing to stare at the twins. "The minute you left Kyoto for Domino was when I lifted the illusion. You two were destined to meet my daughter and her friends."
"So this was all planned?" Elecktra asked, looking very upset. "This whole war was planned from the very beginning? And you're working with Chronos?"
Hecate shook her head. "No, I'm not working with anyone. I knew this was the destiny of these children and I also knew I would have something to do with it. While the outcome of this war remains unknown, Chronos knew I would help him."
"What about our mother?" Anzu asked. "Is she an illusion to?"
"No. She was real, just not in this time period."
Anzu's mouth went dry, her eyes widening even further as the new information sunk in. "What…what do you mean?"
"Your mother existed during the time of the first war with the Titans. Your father entranced her and then made her become pregnant with his child. The prophecy of his twins was already known, but only to a few. So I told him to put you two in my care. Together, we created a Shadow realm that was free of all time. I put you two into an enchanted sleep, where you would not wake until the time was right. When it was time, I removed you from the Shadow realm and had my empousai take care of you."
No one said anything for the longest time. Only heavy silence hung in the air until Bakura spoke up. "That is fucked up," he stated bluntly. "You Gods are fucked up."
"Bakura!" Atem hissed. "There is a Goddess in front of us!"
Hecate only ignored the son of Hades, looking at the twins. Akio kept opening and closing his mouth, shaking his head in disbelief. "So…we're over millennia of years old?" he asked, looking rather green. "We're not even supposed to exist in this era?"
Hecate shook her head. "Technically no, but there are loop holes to almost everything. If it were my way, you two would have stayed in your own time period, but that is not the case. You two were meant to exist here and here is where you shall stay."
Anzu stared at the goddess. "You didn't come out here just to tell us this, did you?" she asked, looking very pale. "There must be another reason as to why you're here."
Hecate smiled, uncrossing her arms. "I am here to test you about the objects. Follow me."
